I just visited the area and found this place. I saw it has a lot of good reviews so I wanted to try it out. I got the bento box and you can choose the rolls and another appetizer in the bento box. The chicken teriyaki was good and the rolls were big and had a lot of filling inside but it was a little pricey for what I got. My friend got the chicken pad Thai and it was good but also a little pricey for what she got. Also, I wish they turned down the AC in the store. It was way too cold in there read more

Yumz - BB1. Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box - Japanese Near Me - Bloomington, Illinois

Yumz was pretty good when they first opened and allowed diners to do ayce sushi to try them out. Their service has honestly never been a reason to go there. And, there's kind of zero ambience as well. It's up to diners to strike up their conversations or quietly wait. The sushi was good from what I remember. It's been years since we've been because their prices are high and they no longer offer any specials or all you can eat. read more

Food was decent, service was good - not bad for the middle of Illinois. Ambience meh.

Stopped here for lunch. The restaurant is small, buy clean with a relaxing simple decor. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was DELICIOUS and average in price. We will definitely be coming back here. read more

No beers/alcohol. No TVs. Bad Japanese piano music drones on in the background. Awkward seating. Trashy signage all about. Untimely service. All this equals NO AMBIANCE. Granted the sushi rolls were 3-star,everything else ultimately means there's really no reason to return. read more

Sushi tacos are so awesome! Sushi is good and they have a great assortment of alcoholic drinks.

Friends invited us to dinner here. We'd never been, but they had and loved it. We had chicken pad Thai. Very nice. Also tried coconut shrimp appetizer. Another home run. Small place but very clean. Service was friendly & fast. If you want to have great food and support local ownership, then you should definitely give it a try. read more

I've been buying their signature Yumz roll for 8 years. So delicious! I actually buy the roll & buy gift cards for my boss for birthdays and Christmas every year. He loves it, too! The owners are friendly & just offer really good food! read more

Service was disinterested. My fave Crab Rangoon appetizer was more cold than hot. But the kicker were the signs every six feet saying 'No outside food and beverage'. Tacky! read more

Ordered sushi to-go/pickup while in town for work. The sushi was good and I highly recommend the "white yum yum sauce" I'm not sure what's in it but it's delicious and would be perfect on some fried rice! The reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of portion vs price. I ordered 1 rainbow roll (6 pieces), 2 orders of Salmon Sashimi (2 pieces per order), and a side of edamame and it was almost $30! I eat sushi often so I know it's not the cheapest cuisine but $30 for what was essentially 10 pieces of sushi seemed a little overpriced to me. For that I expected the sushi roll to be much bigger. But aside from that everything I got was good. I probably wouldn't order the salmon Sashimi again through. It was a thick but which was nice but it was a little fishy and had a greasy liquid on it so I'm not confident in how fresh it was. read more

One of the only options worth going to for sushi in Bloomington/Normal. I have had the following: Mt. Fuji Roll - 9/10 Hot Mama Roll -7/10 Monster Roll - 8/10 Spicy Lover Roll - 7/10 YUMZ Roll - 6/10 What's Up Roll - 6/10 Paradise Roll -8/10 Mexican Roll - 6/10 Pepsi - 9/10 Location isn't great but that's just me being picky. Not a whole lot of seating so on the weekends you could wait a bit. Carry out is a good option. Honestly it would get 5 stars but nothing has taken my breath away to earn it. read more

Sometimes I look at a place that has bad Yelp reviews and I ignore it. Everytime I do this I always regret my decision and swear I will never go against Yelp again. This is a perfect example of that. If you only trust one thing in this world-trust Yelp. Also, trust me and Yelp when we advise you NOT to eat here. For real. For $9 I had the lunch special of steak and broccoli. The fried rice was actually really good. The egg roll was a disgrace to eggrolls everywhere. Overcooked is putting it nicely. It was also the most pathetic eggroll that has every entered my mouth. The hot and sour soup was awful and barely warm. The beef and broccoli entree wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The steak was extremely chewy and the sauce was excessive compared to the amount of actual food on the plate. Save your money. Save your time. Save some calories. Surely Bloomington has another place to satisfy your Chinese food craving. read more

Delicious food - will come back again. Had the steak teriyaki bento box and it was a nice sampling with the appetizer and a roll.

We love Yumz! They have the best sushi in Bloomington Normal- great quality and taste. Their egg rolls and crab Rangoon are also my favorite in the area. The price point is higher than most but it is so worth it for the great food! read more

Decent food at a decent price. My fiance and I really enjoy this place. The serving sizes are good for the price. I also really like their green tea (very "earthly", almost matcha- like) The sushi is good, the entrees are great, and the soups are fun. Plus they have sushi tacos, which one day, we will be bold enough to try. read more

I knew it was a stretch to get sushi in the Midwest, but decided to give it a go since this place had all you can eat. First off, the price was awful for not even having access to the whole sushi menu. It's cheaper is Scottsdale, AZ so that's saying a lot. The quality of the fish wasn't awful, but there was so little of it you could hardly tell compared to the MASSIVE amount of rice they used. Each roll had enough rice on it for 2 rolls. Not sure where there sushi maker was taught but it was as bad as I've ever had. That's about all that needs to be said. Made it impossible to enjoy. Server was cool. I will never go back. read more

Not impressed. Ordered a beer, waited 10 minutes at least and had to ask for it again. Sushi wasn't that fresh - ordered Sakura roll and the fish that was sitting on top of the roll looked pretty sad as in lost its color and shape. Also ordered two Chinese dish which I thought they tasted decent but portion was somewhat small. One of our friend's food came out 5 min after everyone else got their food. We also ordered dumplings as a appetizer in the beginning , didn't get it while we were almost done with our meal, had to remind the server again and then basically got it as dessert and no apology from the server. If I'm spending $50-60, I expect better food and service. read more

Overall, it is an awful experience. Food is below par, price is very high given that quality. Service is no where come close to make customer satisfied. Basically, regardless of your request and feedback, pay us full price, meanwhile, you HAVE TO eat all crappy food otherwise, penalty is charged. Food: sushi rice is very dried, roasted seaweed wrap is so hard to chew, that taste like rubber band. Fish is not fresh, that has been sat out for a long while that tastes dry and dead. By the time you have your 4th pieces, your stomach is literally full from the tough rice or loss all your appetite. If you know blo-no well, I would say their sushi quality is similar or worse than hibachi grill. worse than imperial buffet. and a lot worse than anju above. Service and management: Waitress are new, understandable that they don't have much knowledge on the menu, at least nice attitude. Store manager was bad though, she argues with customers, tell you if you don't like it, too bad! They charge you penalty if you can't eat it simply because of the bad quality. They tell you :"You HAVE TO eat this whole piece, otherwise, you are charged with penalty." Basically, they are telling customers 'too bad, that you have a reasonable taste and standard for food and services you are looking for, pay full price, and leave!' Price: it is $21 for all you can eat sushi. It is not all you can eat, there are various of limitations. Those limitation goes to $26 option. So, you can't eat as much as sashimi as you want. You can actually have 4 pieces per item. They are basically not honest about their selling point. Waitress asked me if I want anything to drink, I said tea is fine. You would assume that tea is included in all you can eat. NO! you are wrong. They will charge you 3 dollars for a cup of tea. It is outrageous. I wish this place can be better. Otherwise, I would really suggest you find you a better place to spend your precious time and money. You are not getting happiness back from this restaurant. read more

For a brand new restaurant that has fresh sushi it was delicious. Small restaurant for seating on the inside. The owners are very knowledgeable in their sushi, are really nice people, and they have lived here in Bloomington for 10 years. Portions are good sized for the price, and come displayed pretty on your plate. I decided on the all you can eat sushi, which came with miso soup and house salad. After eating 4 different maki rolls, I almost had wished I had ordered just a couple rolls the first "round". Tips: Make sure that you only order a little bit at a time, especially with rice based rolls you can fill up fast. You can't share your all you can eat with anyone else at the table, and you'll pay 50 cents for every piece that isn't eaten. Can't blame them as the seafood quality is high and that would be throwing money away if they didn't up-charge for this. read more

Yumz - These are really good sized portions of sushi from the all you can eat menu. - Japanese Near Me - Bloomington, Illinois

Okay, so here's the deal. It's kind of a win-lose scenario coming here. The win is that the sushi here is really great and also affordable. The lose, though is that the whole experience is cringe worthy when it comes to service. The host stand is awkwardly in the middle of the restaurant. The servers either are spread very thin with other tables or (like today's visit) are so uninformed on how to wait on a table that it hurts. The food also takes unreasonably long to come to the table. If the food didn't stand up for itself, I would never come back.. But gosh dangit the sushi is really tasty. read more

Mediocre at best. The eggroll had a miniscule amount of filling so that the ends were nothing but fried dough. Miso soup was just ok. The Paradise Roll was really tasty. But it was loosely rolled and just fell apart. Even the tea was subpar - weak. Service took a while to greet us and take our drink order after we were seated. read more

Yumz has an all you can eat option, but it was $21 for dinner. So instead we ordered rolls. This sushi place is better than Kobes japanese steakhouse. The tables are very clean and the atmosphere is very calming. This is the best sushi place in Bloomington. The portion sizes are not as big compared to kobes. I like it because I wasn't forcing myself to finish anything. My stomach still had room and it was cheaper for lesser pieces. About 5 to 6 pieces per roll. Around $1 to $2 for once piece of nigiri sushi. They served their water in cute mason jars! Atmosphere 5/5. Yumz keep the lights pretty dim and creates a very calm enviroment. It has a few booths, but mosly individual tables for two. I came here with my boyfriend and we ordered Dragon roll, spicy crab, mango tango and 2 salmon nigiri, 2 eel nigiri and 2 yellow tail. The spicy crab roll is 4/5 it is not very spicy, just mild so it is perfect for someone who can't really eat spicy and would still like to try it. I like more spicy stuff so i give it only 4/5. (don't judge my rating system!) The dragon roll 5/5 the eel has a nice soft texture with fresh avocado and cucumber. The rice is not too sour from the vinegar. The chef also put the perfect amount of sauce. Usually the sushi rice falls apart when too much sauce is added. The rice stayed solid and was easy to pick up . Mango Tango 5/5. This was my first time trying sushi with mango, but WOW. I was blown away. It was so fresh and crunchy. If you are someone who likes crunchy and sweet stuff you should try this roll. It is more pricy. Around $6. They put cucumber and fake crab meat on the inside. The outside has a slice of mango and some sweet mango sauce. Salmon/eel/yellowtail nigiri 5/5. Very fresh and nice fish to rice proportion Service is not the fastest. So patience is key. read more

I'm not too impressed by Yumz overall. I've been here several times to give them a try on sushi, hibachi grill, entree, but overall they are just an okay restaurant. The sushi rolls are 3 stars, with good varieties, but very little attention to details. Their raw fish is pretty fresh, though. When it comes to hibachi grill, I've tried their steak and chicken. The steak was good, but the chicken was too dry without any tenderness, and it was over-covered with sauce to give it flavor. Their soups are below average, especially the hot-sour soup. The only thing I'd come back here for is probably their milk bubble tea! It tasted good with real tea flavor and texture. read more

Great find! 4stars. Best thing about it was it was super clean!!! Was greeted right away, people were really nice and checked on my often. Got my appetizer super quick. Fried Wontons...they were ok. But then got the Sushi Roll(see picture) not much for presentation but wow did it pack some serious flavor!!! Would totally come back if nothing else but to get the Super Volcano roll. Loved it! Only complaint was that it was freezing in there but maybe had to do with the food/sushi I'll be back thanks Yumz! read more

We followed a friend's recommendation and visited Yumz for sushi. So glad we went! The food was delicious and the server was very nice. Not bad! Clean inside and nice staff. Reasonably priced. I will agree with other reviewers, sushi rolls are very rice heavy and THICK pieces. But they don't skimp out on the other ingredients. Fresh and flavorful. Overall a decent little place. read more

YUM is an understatement!! Best food. Best service. Had their green tea, gyozas, coconut shrimp, Valentine sushi roll and Malaysian rice noodles. AND their green tea cheesecake and mochi ice cream. I will be back any time I am in the area again! Thank you!! read more

While the quality of the sushi itself is still very good, there's been a trend where Yumz' rolls are... big. Too big. Too big to eat, and mostly rice, enough that it makes it wry hard to enjoy the roll itself. If this is fixed, I'd rate Yumz as five stars... now, sadly, not so much. read more

Yumz, the z stands for extra yummy. Definitely my go to sushi place in Bloomington-Normal. Their food, price, and interior, all things considered together, makes me want to go back there over Anju, Kobe, and Kochi. The restaurant interior is small but clean and new. You get to see their kitchen and how your food is made, which is always a plus in my book, it shows they take pride in how they handle your food. Food, I've tried a good potion of their menu by now. Their sushi is fresh and portion size is good, though their technique is lacking because the rolls are just so loosely packed and therefore large. Normal entrees are hit or miss, but in general everything is cooked well. Their fried food are not too greasy, food are not too salty, and presentation is clean. Their menu do offer some more authentic Asian dishes, which is hard to find in Bloomington. read more

I ordered carryout for lunch today. Upon entering, the store seemed very clean and well maintained. I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff, and my order was ready. I was able to prepay online, so it was a quick trip for lunch. I tried the Spicy Tuna Roll, Las Vegas Roll, and Tempura Cheese Balls. I agree with other Yelpers that the rolls are HUGE! I would not want to try and eat these in public with chopsticks! Unfortunately, I had to pass on my chopstick skills, and resorted to a knife and fork. The rolls didn't hold together well, but were decent. The spice level on the tuna roll was a 1 out of 10. I like a lot more zip. The Las Vegas Roll (crab meat, avocado, cucumber & cream cheese) was pretty in presentation, but the amount of crab was disappointing. The "spicy" mayo on top was also a 1 out of 10 in heat level. I was hoping for some decent heat to enjoy the Tempura Cheese Balls. I would give this place a 5 out of 5 just for the cheese balls. If any locals remember Hayashi, these are a close second. They don't have that delicious golden sauce Hayashi served, but they are pretty tasty. I will go back, maybe try some different rolls, or request more heat if possible. I will definitely get more of the Tempura Cheese Balls! read more

I usually do not write reviews but I had to about this place. Went there for lunch with a co-worker and it was absolutely amazing. I went with the all you can eat option for 13.99 just because I was eyeing 2 specialty rolls that would of came out to that amount anyways and it was well worth it. The sushi was very fresh and the wait staff was very polite and the wait time was not long at all even though it was busy. I brought my friend here to celebrate her birthday. It was empty when we entered, so we had the place to ourselves. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical based on the reviews I read. To be fair, we gave them an honest try. I was blown away by how good everything was. We ordered potstickers and stuffed jalapenos with crab for our appetizers. I order the Mt. Fuji roll for my main course. It had smoked salmon, avocado, cream cheese, jalapeno, spicy mayo, chili & eel sauce. It was a deep fried crunchy roll (6.99). I was impressed. We ordered strawberry mochi ice cream for dessert. I would definitely go back again. read more

Finally! A place in Bloomington that sells delicious sushi!! My wife and I are very picky about our sushi, and had given up on any place in Bloomington/Normal. We've just been driving to Champaign any time we wanted sushi. Those days are over.
