I was really impressed with this restaurant. We visited Toronto in June, and we were wandering around to figure out what to eat. Stumbled upon Yuen Tang and luckily we were able to order because they closed early on Tuesdays. We ordered the chili chicken and Yueh Tang special noodles - spicy. Both of these dishes were excellent. The noodles had an amazing wok hei flavor. The spice level was just right and subtle. The chili chicken was flavorful and paired perfectly with the noodles. The oldest Hakka Chinese restaurant in Toronto. This 40 year old establishment is run by two sisters, Joanna and Janette Liu who took over for their parents Mike and May. I've been eating here for decades and the food is phenomenal! They got a renovated recently and it looks even better than before. Favourite Dishes: Chili Shell-less shrimp (crispy, soft, juicy with a kick), Crispy Beef (crunchy sweet with a bit of spice), Manchurian Chicken Dry (salty and flavourful), Cantonese Fried Rice (barbecue pork and shrimp, so good), and the Cantonese Chow Mein (crunchy and soft and delicious). I never ate at this restaurant, which is surprising to me as a Blue Jays fan. I've heard many players eat here, especially during the World Series years. So I went going in with good expectations - if it's good enough for the ballplayers, why not me? And the restaurant did not disappoint. The walk-up was warm and inviting, we were seated promptly and with no fuss, even with the dinner rush about to start. The place was very spacious and clean, as we got a booth that had a view overlooking some of the street. We ordered their sizzling beef with onions, green beans in black bean sauce and their famous chili chicken. The sizzle and the smell of the meat dishes were music to my ears, and the taste just as harmonious. The green beans were just as tasty and provided a nice balance to our proteins. Delicious no-frills food with great vegetarian options in a comfortable space. Have been several times in the last few years, dishes tried on the most recent visits were: - Manchurian mushroom chow mein: the selection of noodle, topping, and sauce options was great, Manchurian sauce was super flavourful with a good mix of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. - Mushroom garlic noodles: really aromatic and well-seasoned, but very clearly felt like a shareable side rather than a main (maybe bigger chunks of green onion and garlic would have helped?) and the mushrooms were a bit bland. - Vegetarian hot and sour soup: included some surprising ingredients like large pieces of bell peppers and peas, and also tasted a bit acrid, maybe due to the sambal used. By far the spiciest thing I've had here. Only thing to note is that solo diners might get seated at these little round tables in the middle of a walkway if they are busy, which feels quite awkward. read more

We had been looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant. I know this sounds weird for the GTA, but THIS was about finding one that made a terrific Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. We had been used to one from Montreal where we used to live. Well thirty years later, still no decent Shrimp in Lobster Sauce until this! The food was incredible. Our wait-person Yuki, was incredibly attentive and even helped me to fix the broken zipper on my puffer jacket. Now THAT is service! On that note, it is rare to come across a restaurant, where the staff will advise you on the portion sizes. We were about to order a medium sized Hot & Sour soup, but she suggested that the small was more than enough. She was 100% right. And it was quiet. We could actually have a conversation! We had tried coming here once in 2021, December 31 at the height of Covid. We couldn't even get a takeout order, it was that busy. So glad we finally got to try it. I was here for my friend's bday party and the staff were sooo cool and very humble. They were extremely accommodating with my gluten allergy and I got to try every single dish that was served at the party..... that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to take pictures of because my stomach ate first instead of my eyes. (Believe me when I say the food is bussin) This place is one of Toronto's OLDEST Hakka restaurants so the interior is very Chinese banquet style but with more modern touches since the this is a family business and their two daughters took over the business. it was so comforting and the food was so good that my wife and I plan on bringing another group of friends here! She had mentioned that it reminded her of her home cooking in Indonesia and it was really hard for them to find Indonesian style Chinese food so when we finally discovered what she was looking for was Hakka she started crying. (Poor baby) I saw that had app specials and mocktail options for those with a budget. I just love how they're so thoughtful with everything and you can really tell the family really cares about their community and how they show up. Pretty good hakka. Got the chili chicken (dry), crispy beef, and veggies. The crispy beef had a good sweet spicy taste, though not as crispy as I'm used to. The chili chicken was tender, though didn't have the same whallop of flavour as the beef. Brocolli was nicely garlicy. Service was friendly and tried to create a welcoming environment. I first discovered Yueh Tung way back in the 80s, before the growth of uptown Chinese restaurants. They are, in fact, Toronto's original Indian style Hakka restaurant and the creator of the very popular Chili Chicken. Originally located in a smaller space across the street, their current location is more spacious and welcoming. Their current menu offers popular Indo Hakka and Cantonese dishes, all very delicious. We feasted on some delicious food, starting with Wonton Crisps with a Sweet and Sour dipping sauce, followed by a Hakka Meatball soup that was very flavourful. That was soon followed by Hakka Wonton Garlic Noodles, Manchurian Fish, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Special Mixed Vegetables and Tofu, Butter and Scallion Lobster on Fried Rice, and the very popular and tasty Chili Chicken. Crispy Beef was up next, along with Pork Belly and Preserved Vegetables, one of my favourites. Our feast was complete with dessert, consisting of Sweet Rice Pearls in Red Rice Coconut Milk. This is one of the oldest Hakka spots in Toronto that opened around the 1980s. I came here on a Friday during their lunch hours and the lunch special came with a dish, spring roll and a pop for $16-$18. The service was quick and the waitress was extremely pleasant. My friend and I got the Crispy Beef and Chilli Chicken (saucy) and added the Chinese Broccoli for an up charge of $2.5. Both were extremely flavourful and the portions were massive. I can easily make two meals out of one. I liked the Crispy beef a bit more than the Chilli Chicken. It had a nice crunch with a little sweet and umami aftertaste. The bell peppers and onions add a nice crunch. The Chilli Chicken was good as well. This is a quick sit, quick eat and quick leave spot. I will definitely be coming back! read more

This place clearly has been around!!! Even tho they moved from ground floor to an upstairs location, the food and service remained steady and reliable. The staff are super friendly. The food is delish and well priced. It's not a "high end" restaurant so don't expect anything fancy...there's no focus on plating here, just the food!! This is a well-known restaurant in my family for authentic Hakka cuisine. This restaurant is situated on the 2nd floor of a building in the heart of downtown Toronto, and inside is very spacious which means large parties are welcome. The waiters were really friendly towards us and gave us suggestions to maximize our dining experience. One of the waiters suggested we order the Manchurian chicken with wet sauce and the chili chicken dry so we could try one chicken dish with sauce and other dish without sauce - it was a great idea! The food is delicious, the chicken and beef were so tender and so flavorful and paired well with rice. We will definitely plan to eat here again if we visit downtown Toronto. I think this place redeemed themselves, the manager working there still remembers us we've been coming g there for years since I was 5 years old. If you want authentic Hakka this is the place to come. We ordered chilli fish, chilli chicken and crispy beef. The chilli fish I believe is most popular, it's really delicious, crispy on outside and soft and delicate on the inside, the chilli chicken was really good had a Smokey Flavor, you get that authentic Hakka taste, what I liked it's not as salty as Frederick's, If you have chilli fish make sure you eat it with the white rice, if you like noodles make sure you get chilli chicken with the crisoy noodle I didn't get it because I'm trying to avoid carbs. I wish they would start giving oranges with the fortune cookies their oranges were so good, but maybe covid changed everything and everything is now expensive it's understandable. read more

Craved some Hakka food so we UberEats'd this restaurant's top 3 items: Hakka sweet soy noodle, chili shrimp, stir fried kung pao chicken. All the food came in good portions, but for the kung pao chicken, we were disappointed that there were more vegetables than chicken in the dish. The sweet soy noodles were super tasty, not too sweet, and had a wonderful chewy texture. The shrimp, however, was the star of the show. Perfectly spicy and crispy, these shrimp were amazing - definitely recommend it. Last but not least, the kung pao chicken had good flavouring as well: it was salty and spicy, well cooked. As mentioned before however, there were more of the accompanying vegetables in our plate than the chicken. Overall, this place is great for Hakka food! We didn't get to explore many of the other options but we hope to do so in the future :) read more

I love this restaurant. The food is good, and very reasonably priced. There is a big variety of dishes to choose from and they seem happy to adjust for dietary requirements or preferences. You do not have to wait long to order or for your food which arrives hot. The corn soup and the hot and sour soups are delicious. Water glasses are promptly refilled. Temper your expectations because BlogTO is the equivalent of winning the Oscars LOL. This place is decent. It is your typical average Hakka restaurant. I came here 2 times decades ago when the parents ran the joint. The staff were rude and I had asked about Hakka Sweet Noodles (Foong Mei) but they dismissed me that "we don't do that here" and somehow I just thought I had gotten it wrong thinking this was a hakka restaurant. I did not eat here again for a LONG time. Then I saw tons of social media videos of this place and learned that the daughters had taken over. I wanted to support the business because a lot of Hakka restaurants are closing down in our city because they kids don't want to take it over. I messaged on IG and learned that they DO have Hakka Foong Mei which is called Hakka Sweet Soy noodles on the menu. I went there twice in December 2 weekend back to back. I noticed the menu was revamped which did a much better job at explaining all the dishes and its history. The staff now are also incredibly friendly, care about service and take their time. It is your standard Hakka food with decent portions and in some instances the portion is big. Like the small soup actually serves 4 people. My point is this place will not disappoint if you are a fan of Hakka food but temper expectations with pricing since it is in the downtown core so not unusual to see the price point. You aren't going to get some special Hakka powers or be blown into oblivion with flavours from a Hakka mascot (which I feel like some reviewers had hoped - odd but you do you). Some reviewers saying they don't understand the hype but I am not sure there is any hype around this place. No one said its the #1 Hakka restaurant in the world but it is one of the oldest in Toronto. No one said there is a huge line up of people outside. Where is the hype? Did you hype it yourself in your head just because it was featured on BlogTo? It was such a nice experience at this lovely, well ventilated and spacious restaurant. The waitress who took our order was super nice and accommodating of my dietary restrictions. Then the waiter who served our food was super nice too. He actually served the soup in our bowls. The portion sizes are huge. A small hot and sour soup was a huge portion for all three of us. The soup was a little too much vinegar to my liking but my husband loved it. Then we ordered hakka noodles which the waitress warned us it would be a little sweet. But the flavors were amazing. They sell 3 types of Hakka food: Indian Hakka, Cantonese Hakka & Hakka Hakka. I tried to find out what dishes were which type of Hakka but the staff were very unhelpful. Had Hakka wonton garlic noodles (I think this is Cantonese Hakka). They were decent. There were quite a lot of wantons & they were fresh & bouncy. There was some BBQ pork. I was very pleasantly surprised coming here. It brings back fond memories of Spadina garden which used to be close by and I've been missing it. We had some crispy beef on a hot plate and the chilli chicken in sauce, then also had some baby bok Choy. The beef was so good, so crispy and tasty. The chicken was also really good. Very tasty. The portions of both were very large. We finished off the beef bot that we needed to but it was so tasty. I love the staff here, they are super friendly and nice. If you eat in, they are attentive to your needs. Service is fast and the food comes to you piping hot! I often get take out for lunch and they lunch combos are reasonably priced and you can add on sides for $2.50. My go to is the chilli chicken (without sauce is a must) and rice with a side of Chinese broccoli. The portions are huge and you can easily get two meals out of it. I would say this is probably my favourite venue for (Hakka) chilli chicken. I usually order their chilli chicken on rice during lunch time for 11$. Sometimes I would go for the rice noodle upgrade (3$). For the rice noodle upgrade they would fry the rice noodle in a wok then bed it with a generous layer of sauce and chilli chicken. OK so pork belly is about the best thing ever. It melts in your mouth like buttah. This pork belly was quite nice, but I've had better. Fried Rice - 3/5. Meah. Fried rice is fried rice. You've tried one, you've tried them all (I challenge someone to change my mind...) Hot and Sour Soup - 3/5. That's another dish I MUST order at a Chinese restaurant. We ordered fried rice, braised pork belly and garlic baby bok choy and all the flavors were there. No extra oil on the fried rice just the umami goodness. Located upstairs of a building, on a small street, I didn't expect much. Climbing up looking at old grey carpet reminded me of an old Chinese restaurant. This Hakka place looked decent without much decor as two walls are full windows facing toward Dundas street. By 6 pm, I was surprised that it was packed and people were waiting. The waiter's proficiency in English wasn't the greatest. We got four dishes to share with two steam rice bowls to split. I figure they cater more to other race as chopsticks were not on the table or offered. I had to ask for them!! Dish 1- their popular spicy chicken which was actually spicy and it was a good portion. Dish 2- stir fried snow pea leaves with chopped garlic. It was good, but for $13, it was pricey. Dish 3- vegetarian ma pu tofu was the only dish that came out hot (in temperature). However you need plenty of rice to go with it as I found it salty. The tofu at least was soft and melts in your mouth. Dish 4- sweet and sour chicken for my partners craving and I only ate a piece. Two sweet for this Cat. Service wasn't the greatest but at least we were not kicked out quickly as we sat near the entrance. Some Chinese places give you the bill before you ask which is a definitely signal. Verdict: I would only go back with friends to try their other dishes. Maybe ask for less sauce or salt.
