Very nice sushi! For those of you, like me, who hate to pay big bucks for sushi I have a tip. Join the email club on their website. Periodic coupons will come your way and make this a much more affordable option. As always lunch is also a much better deal than dinner too so keep that in mind. For me it is easier to enjoy a place if I feel as though I am getting the food for a good price. I am doing a lot of hanging out with my mom. She is sick so we were in the area for tests. This is not too far from St Joes and hey I had my handy coupon, yay! They had sent one for 10 dollars off 20 dollars or more. We both decided on bowls of chirashi which were filled with a variety of fresh fish and veggies. Generously portioned. We both quite enjoyed. I liked this as I usually just go to the place down the road for half off rolls and don't get chirashi as often as I would like to. I took advantage of the happy chance to deviate from that habit. I like the simplicity of chirashi, you still get the rice but you get to enjoy the fish on its own. If you have never gotten any, do try it sometime. I think just eating junked up rolls everywhere can get boring. Sometimes you have to savor the fish itself. The tea was hot, they also actually put some ice in our waters too (yay- I like mine icy). The miso soup was tasty and also hot. The service was efficient and polite. They were not too busy which probably helped. I liked the choice of seating options, the atmosphere was nicer than it looked from outside too. We will be back but yes it will be when we have a good coupon. read more

Eh. Going back and forth and back and forth with my opinion of this place. You may see that, at the time of writing this, I have been here over 12 times. This is mostly due to convenience but also, they almost always have melt-in-your-mouth salmon and half decent raw fish. Unfortunately, the quality of sushi seems to vary wildly depending on who is working or what time of day you go. Today's chirasi bowl had great salmon, good yellowtail, tuna that seemed not totally thawed (?), and rubbery slightly-foul-tasting octopus. And that bowl is $27. Things feel totally out of balance here. The yellowtail carpaccio fish is good but totally overpowered by the sauces. And while we're on the topic of sauces, almost all of them are far too runny (won't even coat the back of a spoon). This includes the carrot ginger salad dressing, the terriyaki sauce, the chili sauce, and all else. The meats and the noodles are bland. Actually, I like the udon noodles. But the broth needs a lot of work. The plates sure do look pretty, but the flavor just isn't there. If the prices were cheaper, I would be fine with making this a staple for cheap, average, go-to Japanese eats. But when you drop 20-30 bucks a person, you ought to have consistent, finessed, and deft preparation. I've had Yotsuba takeout twice this winter. The food is always amazing--I order a variety of sushi and have also had tempura vegetables. The prices aren't exactly cheap, but I do feel that they are fair. On one occasion, the pickup was about 15 minutes late, and on the other occasion it was right on time. But it's great food and definitely my go-to for sushi in the area! read more

Yotsuba is more like a 3.5. I rounded up because my recent experience was much better than my previous times here. My past experiences at Yotsuba were sub-par. The sushi rolls, udon, & sashimi were all just okay, nothing special. I'm not a stickler about service, if food is really good. But here at Yotsuba, sometimes the servers seem to be in cranky moods and unfriendly. I always preferred to go to Sushi Town because the fish is fresher and the Sushi Chef and his wife are just so sweet and nice. I just ate here yesterday after several friends wanted to come for lunch. Someone also told me that there is a Groupon deal: $20 for $40 worth of food. More about the Groupon deal later. As for the food, one of our dining companions kept raving about the Duck Ramen (comes with 4 pieces of gyoza), so the Bo decided to get this while I opted for the Sashimi Lunch. I always have to ask the server 2 questions: 1) How many pieces come with the lunch? & 2) What types of fish are included in the lunch?. We got a very pleasant and informative waiter. He said the sashimi lunch includes: 2 pieces each of tuna, salmon, red snapper, octopus, & mackerel. But I cannot stand to eat mackerel raw (after an awful experience at Omi Sushi in EL), so I asked if I could get anything else and they were nice enough to give me swordfish instead of the mackerel. The soup and salad came out first. The miso soup was okay. The salad had a tangy, gingery sauce, which I liked. I tried the duck ramen first and it was okay. I didn't get the hype. The broth needed more depth of flavor and salt, and the portion of duck meat was small. My sashimi was beautifully presented and tasted pretty good. The salmon was a bit slimy, but everything else was good, especially the swordfish sashimi pieces. It was served with a small side of rice and the sriracha I asked for (they didn't charge me extra unlike Sadako and Totoro, which was nice). Time to pay and one of our friends had a Groupon. I don't think they like people using the Groupons very much because the person (different from our server) who brought us our bills turned grouchy when they pulled out the Groupon. We originally arrived at 6 PM on a Saturday night and the place was packed with a 25 minute wait in a freezing lobby. So we decided to go for Middle Eastern instead and returned back to Yotsuba at 5:00 PM the following Saturday. On this particular day, we were seated immediately and there were probably only 6 other customers in the restaurant. After spending 5 minutes staring down each waiter, we were finally able to order. The hubby ordered the chirashi while I ordered the nabeyaki udon. First off, let me comment on the water. It was absolutely horrible. I took one sip and was overwhelmed by the taste and odor. It was worse than tap water. So obviously, we didn't drink the water. I was pleasantly surprised by the large house salad which consisted of romaine lettuce and possibly ginger miso seseme dressing. It came with both of our meals. The hubby also got the miso soup which was OK (as some reviewers raved about this; we were not that impressed). And then out came the chirashi. Initially, the hubby was thrilled that the chirashi had a separate container for the rice as he likes to restrict his carb-loading. He was also happy to see the large amount and variety of raw fish placed in front of him. While he began eating his meal, I nit-picked at his rice and I read and dissected the ingredients of our table spice container until my nabeyaki udon arrived 10 minutes later. We found the timing of our food delivery odd as most restaurants will oftentimes deliver a party's food concurrently. The $14 nabeyaki udon was accompanied with several pieces of tempura. It was, quite frankly, the best tempura I have ever had in Ann Arbor. The udon was good but the soup base tasted like it had a good amount of MSG. As for the $25 -ish chirashi, the hubby was overall impressed by the quantity and presentation, but not [impressed] by the quality and freshness of the fish. However, it would be fair to mention that he grew up in Hawaii and so his standards are quite high. We finished dinner around 5:40 PM but had to wait until 5:50 PM until we were able to grab the attention of a waitress while 5 flew by avoiding eye contact. I realize we are in a completely different city than LA and Hawaii at this point but I did find this interesting as Japanese restaurants will typically have a higher level of customer service. So would I come back here again? Tough call. If I'm in the area at 5 PM on a weekend and madly craving tempura, then yes. Otherwise, I'd be fine trying other places. read more

I come here for the spicy flounder sushi roll. Over the years the roll has gotten smaller and a little less "wow" but it's still delicious and that's pretty much what keeps me coming back. Their miso soup and house salad are also better compared to other local places I've had it out. The dressing for the house salad is fabulous and if you ask, you can buy jars of the dressing to take home! They make decent sushi! I've had one of the udon bowls before and it was tasty but nothing to call home about. So since then I usually only ever go there for sushi, miso, and salad. I think they had a ownership change early 2018 or something and things (service) were a little weird at first. I think they're sorting it out though. read more

We judge sushi first on the freshness of the sashimi. If it melts in your mouth and tastes "non-fishy" we are very happy diners. The sashimi here was to die for, thick, beautiful and melted like butter! I tried the Alaskan roll, it was ok but likely just not to my taste, I want to try the Napolean next time. Came here for lunch with the Mrs. I rocked one of those Groupons (the $40 for $20), so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. AMBIANCE: About what you'd expect of a Japanese restaurant. Light wood, and subtle decor gave a very simplistic theme. The place isn't huge by any means. They have seating at the sushi bar, and maybe another 10-15 tables. Oh, and can I say this place was freaking COLD. Turn up the thermostat folks. SERVICE- Not too many people when we came for lunch, so service was pretty attentive. We didn't have too many questions for them as we know our way around a Japanese menu, but they did give a few recs on things we might want to check out. MENU- Bento boxes, ramen, katsu curry, your standard Japanese fare. The sushi menu didn't seem to be that creative. I was actually surprised at how few rolls featured eel. Honestly, I was hoping for something a little bit different, but really didn't see anything to separate it from other sushi joints. FOOD- since the place was freezing, I opted for the Duck Ramen, and my wife got the seafood Ramen. We also ordered a spicy crunch roll (shrimp tempura with spicy tuna and crunchy flakes on top, or something to that effect). The sushi roll was ok. Nothing mind blowing, but good. My duck ramen was actually pretty bland. But paired with the sushi, it actually complemented the ramen very well. My wife liked her seafood ramen, but could've used more actual seafood in her Ramen. Went here bc of the group-on. Honestly I'm not that impressed. First off, we waited about 30+ min to get our food. Was told there was a party of 15 that was delaying the sushi chefs. Not a great start. Food: 3/5. Just ok. Not horrible. Not special. Had some standard simple rolls: avocado, tuna, salmon. They give soooo little substance. Basically ate plain rice wrapped in seaweed. Also had a guacamole roll - that one literally had twice the amount of tuna as the standard tuna roll!!! I appreciate that. In the past, have been here and had others of their special rolls. All good, but again nothing to write home about. Service: 5/5. Best part of the night. Our server was a young Asian guy. Very attentive. The food is overpriced for what you get. I ordered 2 California rolls and got 8 tiny little slices of sushi. I got my roommate the Shrimp Tempura Roll and she said it tasted like tuna. Living in the area (Ypsi) I have been going from one Sushi place to the next to find a good one. My girlfriend and I have frequented Ichiban (we didn't know any better.. and they had 50% off sushi), but we decided to give Yotsuba a try on New Years Eve. There was a wait, but not too bad. We ordered some sashimi (tuna / white tuna), usual mix of house salad + miso (very good miso!) and assortment of special rolls along with some basics (like avocado / salmon roll). Aside from the dreadful 'woven basket' type chairs we were seated in, the atmosphere was great, presentation of the meal was superb, eacy portion brought in and finely laid out. Large amounts of wasabii (which I like), as well as the wait staff just being on the ball the entire time, my tea ran dry, it was re-filled within 1 min of me putting it down. This is my very favorite place to get sushi. I tried it on a whim with a Groupon and fell in love, and they pretty much always have Local Flavor coupons so it's a great deal! The only bummer about this place is that soup and salad don't come with your meal. Even when they're really busy, I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. Everything I've ever ordered here has been at worst still good. Most of it is fantastic. Order the tempura flounder roll! My parents live nearby in South Lyon, so I make the trek up to the Ann Arbor area a few times a year. Yotsuba and Cherry Blossom in Novi were our primary go-to Japanese restaurants in the area, but now that Cherry Blossom is no longer in business, I guess Yotsuba is my top choice. Admittedly though, I've yet to go to Sharaku, and my parents tell me Sharaku is better. But back to Yotsuba. They have a pretty good variety of traditional Japanese dishes on their menu, and I've yet to have a dish that I did not enjoy. The seats are pretty spacious, especially the booths in the back. The service is solid all around. Each dish may be somewhat pricier than other Japanese restaurants in the area, but the dishes may be a little bigger as well. This is especially true with their sushi/sashimi/chirashi. The sushi chefs here give you the thickest slices of raw fish I've ever seen anywhere in the world. Does this go against tradition? Yeah probably. But I don't care, I think it's awesome to get a thick slice of fresh tuna. They have a pretty nice selection of Japanese cakes and pastries for dessert as well. So yeah, I'm a fan of Yotsuba. They might be worthy of 5 stars, but since I don't have an adequate sample of competing Japanese restaurants in the area to compare against, I'll give them 4 stars for now. read more

Visited on an early weekday evening and the restaurant had plenty of room, so we were able to be seated right away. Our server was quick, attentive, and to my delight, brought out our four rolls of sushi maybe just ten minutes after we placed the order. It was wonderful that the service was so fast, because unlike most Japanese restaurants, Yotsuba does not offer complimentary miso soup and salad. I ordered the dragon roll with shrimp instead of egg, volcano roll, avocado cucumber roll, and spicy tuna crunch. The dragon roll and avocado cucumber roll were by far my favorites. Both of them tasted fresh and at half the price of the other three, the avocado cucumber roll was an especially good deal. The spicy tuna crunch actually turned out to be fish served atop crunch rice, which I thought was a novel concept. However, the fish tasted a bit too mushy to me and it lost its appeal after a few bites. I was a bit disappointed with the volcano roll as well--on the menu, they added a sticker next to the item labeling it as "very hot," but the roll turned out to have very little spice at all. Like the spicy tuna crunch, the fish in this roll was also a bit too warm and mushy. The description definitely raised my hopes, but I was let down by the mediocrity of the taste and texture. read more

Whenever I visit my family, this is always my go to place for sushi. I have yet to find a better place in AA that offers fresher nigiri or a better selection of rolls. We usually order our food to go and their quote time is usually spot on. They have always been very cordial and attentive to any additional sauces you may need. read more

Everything was edible but thoroughly mediocre. Really not up to expectations for the price paid. We got the sushi set and duck ramen with gyoza. Sushi rice was hard across the board, both for the nigiri sushi and the rolls in the sushi set. The nigiri sushi all couldn't be eaten in one bite. Duck ramen had ok noodles and several pieces of identifiable duck, but the vegetables were a murky limp mess and the 1/2 piece of egg that came with it was hard-boiled instead of the delicious onsen egg I associate with Japanese ramen. Soup was shoyu-based but not complex or especially duck-like in flavour. Gyoza that came with the ramen was oily and not crispy. Service was okay though. And portions in general would be filling for those who want that. If you want somewhat decent Japanese food, try Miki restaurant instead! read more

Holy moly the salmon nigiri is absolutely to die for. I miss it so much after moving out of Ann Arbor. Not necessarily cheap, but you get a solid amount of amazing quality sushi and that's totally worth it. I've gone to a number of other sushi restaurants and ended up paying practically $40 for what I call "the world's most expensive (and unimpressive) sushi appetizer." Yotsuba, on the other hand, is $20-30 of melt-in-your-mouth sushi heaven. And, you walk out happy and full without feeling like you gouged out your wallet for nothing. Service *can* sometimes be a bit slow and waters aren't refilled as much as I'd like them to be, but I always eventually get my food which is great. Do keep in mind that practically the only thing I eat here is salmon nigiri (and if I recall once - yellowtail, eel, and tuna nigiri). I don't really order the rolls or anything else. This is hands down the best sushi and Japanese cuisine in the Ann Arbor area. I particularly enjoy going for one of their outstanding lunch specials or for the lunch sushi deal. On any given day, you might find specials for $11 that include a bowl of chirashi and miso soup, or something hot with a few pieces of sushi alongside, or or or...! But every day at lunch (weekdays only) there is the $15 lunch sushi special which simply cannot be beat. It comes with salad and miso soup, as well as a california roll, and 4 pieces of nigiri, a spicy tuna hand roll, and my favorite, inari. Dinner is also delicious, and definitely a more pricey affair. The steamed crab shumai are worth the wait--order early or they won't come until you already have your main courses! At dinner, the sushi and sashimi platter is also an incredible array of fish and a good deal, too. I personally love the ohitashi, kara age, and one can never really go wrong with tempura. The soba dishes are salty and delicious and are particularly warming on a cold fall or winter day. But don't just take my word for it--explore the whole menu. read more

My friend called me up to invite to this place after work with a Groupon offer. Yes! No leftoverx for me tonight! I arrived and waited for my friend. As we entered we were greeted by a friendly host. We were taken to a table and were greeted by the waiter pretty quickly. The place has some nice japanese design. It is a pretty casual place and inviting. We decided on sharing the Bento combo. It had a mix of various items from the menu. This included miso soup, a salad, tempura vegtables, seaweed, scallops, tempura shrimp, pickled veggies, rice and you can choose teriyaki salmon, chicken or beef. We opted for the salmon. We of course has sake and japanese beer. The meal was excellent. There were a variety of unique tastes and textures. It was one of the best japanese meals i have had. You got a lot of food for a great price.The staff was also friendly and helpful. I plan on checking this place out again soon. read more

My favorite little secret has become quite popular! If you go at 7pm on a Friday, you're going to wait for a table, but that's Ann Arbor. Their food comes out quickly and is to die for! I mostly only get the sushi and I absolutely cannot get enough. I always eat 3-4 rolls on my own, and I'm pretty sure the staff begins to prep a tempura tofu roll when I walk in the door! Is it a little expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY What I've tried off of the regular menu is awesome as well. Keep an eye out for groupons, which pop up all the time. I came here primarily because they had Seafood Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pancake) on the menu. Have been craving it since Hiroshima. This was not it at all. Would love to see them perfect the recipe and serve it as a main entree, Hiroshima style. I'd be running back for sure. Otherwise, Yotsuba is another Japanese and Sushi bar/restaurant. The Sukiyaki (beef) and Roasted Duck were fine. Service was a bit slow as we had to ask for the check a few times. To their credit, the place was busy by the time we left.
