Ok, this place is really growing on me and I feel like I need to update my review. Again…read more Maybe it was because it was a cold, rainy day and I was on the tail end of a 45 minute bike ride, but man, that piping hot chicken over rice with curry and melted cheese just really hit the spot. I absolutely love how hot it is served. I'm realizing that qualities other than pure taste can matter a lot to me. But the taste seemed better to me today. The curry does have some real flavor. I know I called it one dimensional in the past and I guess there's truth to that -- it's heavy on the salt and umami -- but, I dunno, that can still be very flavorful. Steak and potatoes are similar. A good cheeseburger is similar. And it does come with some sort of pickled red stuff that I leave off because I don't like pickled flavor, so yeah, I suppose the lack of contrast is largely on me. But yeah, I found the curry to be pretty strongly and pleasantly flavored today. The chicken could be juicier. I wouldn't call it dry; I think it looks drier than it actually is. I liked it though. I think the fact that it's served so hot adds to my enjoyment. There's a pretty decent amount of crunch from the breading too, although I am a sucker for that outer crunch so I would prefer even more. I also just love the vibe there. If you're a supporter of small businesses, I think you will too. It's just one guy in there running things by himself. Maybe he's had one or two other people helping out in the past, I forget, but today it was just him. I admire the hustle. The place has some homages to Japan too which is cool. Today I noticed a sign on the tables saying that if it's busy to share the table with other patrons. It then explained that that's how they do it in Japan. The tables are pretty small and some are right next to each other. I've never seen it busy enough in there where you'd need to sit next to another patron, but I like that the owner provided that note. Moving forward I plan on being a repeat customer at Kale, if not a regular.

Other than the AC not working properly I enjoyed my experience here at the restaurant. My wife and I had just moved here from Reno, NV which is renowned for its all you can sushi restaurants but we were craving some sushi and thankfully it's just a short walk away from our new place. We got a total of 1 appetizer (takoyaki) three rolls and two pieces of nigiri and were worried we were not going to be full after that food. Usually we always get more at an all you can eat restaurant (6-7 rolls, some nigiri, apps and desserts) but thankfully we were full after the rolls. The server was quite nice and welcomed us to the neighborhood and gave us some poki sticks to boot! The overall experience was delightful with my only complaint that it definitely needs to have some better cooling in the restaurant, my wife was "glowing" all over the seats. Even though I realize it's not usually the restaurants fault I do believe that landlords should provide enough comfort for both their tenants and the customers in the restaurant. Would be five stars but my ranking usually follows 4-5 stars for the food, a star depending on the service (usually basic timely service unless it was abysmal) and a final star for just the general ambiance of the restaurant. I can't past how hot it was inside there despite Portland being a more temperate climate I believe if the place doesn't cool down effectively it probably doesn't heat as good as well. Don't let that distract you tho, the food was delicious, and the service was timely and impeccable.

There's lots of seating and we came at a Thursday for lunch and it wasn't too packed. I had the Vietnamese Coffee flight to try out all the different ones, and the Ube cafe sua da was by far the best. I had the Vietnamese sizzling plate with baguettes and it was very good. The flavor is a little bit on the stronger side, but that's what I like so it was perfect for me and the portion was surprisingly enough even though it looked a little small coming out. Highly recommend eating it with with the baguette because dipping into the sauce was delicious. Look forward to coming for dinner sometime to try more!

It wasn't too busy, and we had a big party; really appreciated that they gave the celebrants complimentary desserts, which was a nice touch. The pandan rice cake with ube ice cream was a my favorite. We called earlier and they got reservations available to be made. The pho was perfect for the chilly weather. The broth was strong and flavorful, and the chicken was cooked well. My friend got the noodles with crispy chicken and mushrooms, and those were phenomenal. The Vietnamese platter would honestly make a perfect date-night meal. This has great variety and fun to share. The fries and wings were flavorful appetizers and a great way to start the meal. Service was great overall, but a bit hands-off after the food was served. I don't remember anyone checking back in on us. Nothing was wrong with the food, but it would've been nice to have that quick follow-up. Would definitely come back, especially to check out their brunch next time.

I got the dumplings for her but if I had to skip something I'd do those. They were good but compared to all the other items we had, they were lacking. The only thing not pictured is our wagu braised with sweet potato. That was phenomenal. It pulled apart and melted in your mouth with every bite. We ended with two very different deserts, the strawberry mochi and whipped crem brûlée type desert. Both were tasty. Price range for all plus three alcoholic drinks was $165 not including tip. We were full and happy. Great service as always and it was full, busy house tonight inside the place. I wouldn't change anything other than trying some new things next time to add!

I ordered the miso ramen yesterday and felt underwhelmed at the favors of the broth and meat. My partner ordered the shoyo ramen and agreed that it was all too bland for him. He replaced the protein for extra egg but upon biting into it, he immediately felt the shell. Huge bummer. My partner also ordered a hot green tea and it just wasn't that good. I notified the gentleman at the counter and he said he'd get us another egg, after informing him that it was "just a heads up" and we didn't want it, he still brought it. I also mentioned that we never received our pork potstickers. Another bummer since they looked pretty yummy. The gentleman then said "we have been backed up but it is right there" pointing to the food on deck. While waiting, we noticed all three orders of them were given to the larger party that arrived much later than us. I finished my ramen and we were set to go. I went up to the counter again to request a refund after waiting for the potstickers for a while, to which the gentleman said "it's literally coming up" ?? I said "we don't want to wait, the party arrived after us all got theirs." He said he gave us a refund but after watching him bring up the bill, I don't think he ever put in the order. I really think this was an off-day for them - given how highly everyone reviews it.
