They're known for chang fen as the name implies but I came here for their congee which is another popular choice. Lai Wan Congee: Comes with mixed seafood and meats. Topped with peanuts, shredded eggs, lettuce, cilantro and I believe fried crispy rice noodles. Lots of flavors and textures, although the meat in it had stale aroma which was slightly off putting. Sliced Pork, Liver & Kidney Congee: Comes topped with lettuce and cilantro. This one was much better. The meats were fresh and the liver & kidney were tender and perfectly cooked. Get this if you like organ meats. Overall, Their congee was good. Not too thick or thin. For my taste a little bland, but a bit of salt and white pepper helped. This is apparently a Cheong fun chain hailing from Guangzhou. Ironically, the best bite of our lunch here was not the Cheong fun, but rather the Cantonese pan fried soy sauce noodles. One of the most flavorful versions of this dish I've had in recent years, as the old guard of Cantonese spots in Chinatown has gone downhill. The Cheong fun was a mixed bag. The rolled version with peanut sauce and sesame seeds was very good, and while I normally don't love the texture of the variety with egg, here it tasted almost like a dan-bing. On the other hand, the plain version and the one stuffed with veggies didn't have enough sauce, and as a result had almost no flavor. I would definitely come back for some of the items! read more

I was really looking forward to visiting Yin Ji in Flushing, as I remember the hours-long lines when their original location opened in Manhattan a few years back. Known for their 60-year history from Guangzhou, this famous chain is highly regarded for its steamed rice rolls and congee. The Flushing location is compact but has a decent amount of tables. It operates as a full-service setup where you order at the table and food is brought to you, though everything is served in disposable containers. The roast pork steamed rice rolls came out incredibly fast--within 10 minutes of ordering. However, the plain rice rolls took quite a while to arrive. When they finally did, they were lukewarm to bordering on cold, despite being told everything is made to order. While it's a nostalgic spot with great potential, the execution at this particular location left a bit to be desired. They only accept Cash and Zelle and yet they are really harsh about tip which should be optional. We tried one beef and pork rice roll and only sat for a few minutes to eat. The rice roll was so-so and we looked for a place to bus our own table and cleaned up after ourselves. As we walked towards the door they yelled at us and chased me down to leave tip. They have these baskets for you to put your bag and jackets in since the table are tiny and seats are either stools or a bench. Not good for groups but great for single or double. They said it's because they make it to order, but honestly, given how small the place is, it seems impossible to turn tables. The seats are stools with smaller tables but it was perfect for a quick eat. The congee was delicious, it had a balanced taste. We got the seafood one which costed $14. It wasn't huge but not small there was enough for the 4 of us we still each were able to get multiple pieces of seafood and have a small bowl each. Although they also have some different items on the menu, they're specialty is Rice rolls and congee both of which you can get with various different toppings that they recommend or you can put in a special order. The food comes out quick and about 5 to 10 minutes And it's absolutely delicious either way. I would call this more of a hole in the wall kind of spot where if you walk too fast by it, you might miss it, and it might not call your attention from the outside so much, even more so the inside is pretty plain. But the line that goes out the door tells you that the spot is definitely worth checking out. The woman who waited on my table was friendly and efficient in her work, as you would see her running back-and-forth between tables making sure everybody has what they need. Of course I have to mention that this place is very affordable as well. A set of rice noodles will cost you about eight dollars and the congee is similarly priced depending on toppings. We did not go during a particularly busy time, but after placing our order, while most of the other customers had already received their food, even those who came after us had finished their meals before all of our dishes were served. When the dishes were finally brought out, we noticed that some items we had ordered were still not served, even after we had repeatedly confirmed with the staff. Moreover, after serving the food, they cleared away tableware without asking, even while we were still eating. Before we had completely finished, they also brought new customers to our table area, asked them to wait there, and even said, "Well, we can't exactly force other customers to leave," which was clearly directed at us. Overall, the entire experience--from before the meal to after--was extremely unpleasant. Customers should not have to pay and at the same time endure such treatment. I go to the Chinatown location often and love the rice noodles there. This location is just as good with the only difference being that everything is served in to go containers which I don't mind. We ordered our usual which is curry fish balls, fried dough, beef and shrimp rice noodles, Lai wan congee and hk style milk tea. I love dipping the fried dough in the curry sauce it's so good. All the food is so good and authentic and cost about $40 with tax and tip. A great casual spot for a nice breakfast/brunch! read more
