I was really looking forward to visiting Yin Ji in Flushing, as I remember the hours-long lines when their original location opened in Manhattan a few years back. Known for their 60-year history from Guangzhou, this famous chain is highly regarded for its steamed rice rolls and congee. The Flushing location is compact but has a decent amount of tables. It operates as a full-service setup where you order at the table and food is brought to you, though everything is served in disposable containers. The roast pork steamed rice rolls came out incredibly fast--within 10 minutes of ordering. However, the plain rice rolls took quite a while to arrive. When they finally did, they were lukewarm to bordering on cold, despite being told everything is made to order. While it's a nostalgic spot with great potential, the execution at this particular location left a bit to be desired. Craved Joe's steam rice rolls but they're no longer on Yelp, so I tried Yin Ji Chang Fen. The preserved egg with pork congee is amazing worth coming back for! Very small cute little shop specializing in congee and rice roll. Decently priced great service. Was a bit slow to come out with the congee but other than that great. The preserved egg and pork congee was my favorite. Honestly I was never really a fan of congee but I loved this one. I think the preserved egg really made it for me. I added sriracha to my congee and I loved the flavor even more. The rice rolls were also good, lots of meat filling and good sauce and flavor. But definitely not life changing. This great HK rice roll/congee spot is small but has many rice roll and congee selections. The food does take awhile as it is made fresh. They have these baskets for you to put your bag and jackets in since the table are tiny and seats are either stools or a bench. Not good for groups but great for single or double. My favorite is the beef rice rolls which they give plenty of beef slices in, toast with butter and condensed milk. HK curry fishballs wasn't to my liking. They said it's because they make it to order, but honestly, given how small the place is, it seems impossible to turn tables. I had the preserved egg and pork congee, which was really flavorful, and they were generous with the toppings. I love this place so much and the only down side is that they only take cash. I love their rice rolls and the place isnt too packed normally. I get the normal one with shrimp and the plain ones. Came here for a little mid day snack so didn't get much, just enough for each person to have a few bites. The place is pretty open space with an almost concrete like interior. The seats are stools with smaller tables but it was perfect for a quick eat. The congee was delicious, it had a balanced taste. We got the seafood one which costed $14. It wasn't huge but not small there was enough for the 4 of us we still each were able to get multiple pieces of seafood and have a small bowl each. It was the one thing u absolutely need on a chilly day. We also got the shrimp rice rolls which didn't satisfy as much for $8. Although they also have some different items on the menu, they're specialty is Rice rolls and congee both of which you can get with various different toppings that they recommend or you can put in a special order. The food comes out quick and about 5 to 10 minutes And it's absolutely delicious either way. I would call this more of a hole in the wall kind of spot where if you walk too fast by it, you might miss it, and it might not call your attention from the outside so much, even more so the inside is pretty plain. But the line that goes out the door tells you that the spot is definitely worth checking out. The woman who waited on my table was friendly and efficient in her work, as you would see her running back-and-forth between tables making sure everybody has what they need. Of course I have to mention that this place is very affordable as well. A set of rice noodles will cost you about eight dollars and the congee is similarly priced depending on toppings. The service attitude was extremely poor--worse than anything we have ever experienced--and we are not even new customers. We did not go during a particularly busy time, but after placing our order, while most of the other customers had already received their food, even those who came after us had finished their meals before all of our dishes were served. Some dishes similar to what we ordered were already served and finished for later customers, yet ours were still missing. When the dishes were finally brought out, we noticed that some items we had ordered were still not served, even after we had repeatedly confirmed with the staff. During our wait, whenever we inquired, the staff responded with a very poor attitude and obvious impatience. Moreover, after serving the food, they cleared away tableware without asking, even while we were still eating. Before we had completely finished, they also brought new customers to our table area, asked them to wait there, and even said, "Well, we can't exactly force other customers to leave," which was clearly directed at us. Overall, the entire experience--from before the meal to after--was extremely unpleasant. Customers should not have to pay and at the same time endure such treatment. There are backless benches to sit on, so if you want to put your jacket anywhere, you go and grab a little plastic basket (which may or may not be the teensiest bit dirty. Check before and or one of the hosts may help you choose a clean one) and you roll your jacket up and put it into the basket on the floor. The food comes out quick.
