No matter how much planning and research you can do before a trip to a new place, sometimes it's gut feelings that can still yield the best results. The gf and I were wandering around Florence in between museum tours and realized that it was the perfect time to seek lunch. I had a Google map full of options that I had researched and listed, but it was growing harder and harder to ignore the litany of restaurants scattered all over Florence. We walked by Yellow Bar, and at a cursory glance inside, saw a chill atmosphere, and enough people inside to feel like it might actually be a decent place. Prior to getting seated, we were shown pasta makers making their own pasta, which is always a welcome sight, as opposed to anywhere that uses premade or frozen crap. Everyone we dealt with spoke perfectly good English, so it's an easy place for American tourists like ourselves. The restaurant itself is a surprisingly open and spacious establishment that is bigger than it looks like it should be from the outside. The interior is relaxed and seems like a great place for large or small parties, or just couples. This is where I want to make a remark about the service being slow, but I tend to forget that I'm sometimes reviewing European establishments and a leisurely pace is simply the way things are done in Europe, so we'll call it a pass here. Being in Italy, all I knew was that I wanted to eat pasta, and nothing but. Seeing the in-house made pasta made it an easy choice that it was going to be pasta for lunch. I ordered spaghetti with tomato sauce and basil, and was presented a beautiful plate of genuine Italian pasta. Being the first pasta dish I had in Italy, it was almost like having pasta for the first time all over again. In America, there's lots of debate on what is considered the right way to cook pasta, frankly, I preferred to see what it was like in Italy before coming to any conclusion. The noodles were soft without being sticky and rubbery in texture, and there was just a little bit of chew. Sprinkled with parmesan cheese added a subtle texture and flavor that made it all better. In other words, it was a cathartic experience trying pasta in actual Italy for the first time. Overall, the experience was pretty flawless. There was no wait for a table, the staff was English-speaking and friendly, the food was fantastic and the best thing about pasta is that it's really not that expensive. I would have zero objections with seeking this place out again if my travels ever brought me back to Florence. read more

Yellow Bar is not too far from the Duomo and their pasta and pizza is made with organic flour and natural ingredients. There's a section of the restaurant where you can see them making the fresh pasta! However, they do not have gluten free pasta or pizza. They do offer salad and rice. I had the rice with shrimp and vegetables- it was okay but not amazing. My friend had the green noodle pasta with ham and she enjoyed the freshness of the pasta. They only have inside seating and they do have free wifi. The staff was friendly and the service was fast. I wish I could have tried the freshly made pasta! read more

Yellow Bar was highly recommended by former study abroaders and quickly became a go-to restaurant for birthdays, girls night out, and visitors. I've been for both lunch and dinner and preferred going to Yellow Bar for lunch since it's not as crowded. When it's your first visit, they bring you over to a separate room and show you their homemade pasta. I've tried their pizzas, salads, and pasta and can say that they are some of the best I've had. My go-to pizza is margherita and they make a great one but I highly recommend the gnocchi rose. What I loved about Yellow Bar was their homemade pasta and they made some of the best gnocchi I've had. You really can't go wrong with this dish (it was actually my last meal before I left Florence). Their caprese salad is a must too! Service is fast but as with all true Italian restaurants, they let you take your time eating and enjoying your meal; they definitely don't rush you here. Hands down our best meal in Florence. Our second night in Florence we asked our hotel concierge if she had a dinner reservation, a place she liked to go herself, with out hesitation she said "Yes! Yellow Bar." She went on to tell us how she and her dad go there all the time, her face lit up and she was really excited about it, so off we went. The place seemed to be mostly locals, it's nice, but not fancy, with a price point to match. When we walked in the owner approached me, asked if it was my first time there and took me back to see them making the pasta fresh, it was awesome! Everything we had was fantastic, the pastas were perfectly cooked, the sauces all spot on. My dad ordered a stuffed cabbage dish that was out of this world. Dinner for the four of us ended up being about a hundred euro or so with appetizers and wine. The bottom line: if you ever find yourself in Florence, get directions to Yellow Bar, ask your waitress for some recommendations and then sit back and enjoy the gastronomic pleasure trip. You will not be disappointed. If you are, you can bring me your left overs, I'll take care of them for you. read more

The food here is amazing. When you first visit, you are shown where they make the pasta. I had Ravioli Rose and on another visit Gnocchi Rose. Both were delicious. The pasta was tender and could practically melt in your mouth. It does get busy here because it is so delicious. There was one night (a Tuesday night) that it was so busy that my husband and I were seated with another couple at a table. We were asked if it was ok to do this first, but that was how busy. It did not create a long wait for our food or the service in general which was great. Everyone that we encountered who works here is very friendly and kind. I stopped in here as the last restaurant on my tour of Italy and wow to everything! I had yet to have 'real' Italian pizza on the trip and was told this was one of the better places to try out without feeling like you're being crushed under the weight of the tourists. After a long (hot) day of trekking around the city, a ham and mushroom pizza and a Coke was what the doctor ordered. The salad was not mind blowing but the PASTAS I repeat were amazing. The first thing that the server actually does when you walk into the restaurant is show you where they HANDMAKE the pastas FRESH! You can really taste it in how "al dente" (chewy) the noodles are. I had the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara and it was by far the best pasta of my life, just the noodles, creamy sauce and bacon all blended together so nicely. This place has such a weird name, I honestly thought it was one of those touristy places. But it's a great locals place that was shown to us by one of our city guides. The seafood risotto was banging. The prices were reasonable for the city. The service was good, and the food was great. Very nice place to stop by for lunch. I came after a long visit at the Uffizi. They even made a show of showing me where they make their homemade pasta. The servers spoke English very well. I ended up getting a pizza with ham, mushroom, and onion for about €8.50. The thing about my pizza was that everything was very separated. The ham was all on one corner and the onion occupied another. While my pizza was a little strange, it was still a decent meal. My friend got a gnocchi dish and enjoyed it from what I could tell. Yellow Bar is a fantastic spot for lunch in Firenze. It's a little out of the way so is a bit less touristy and less expensive than most places. My girlfriend recalled it from her college days as a great spot, so when we needed a break and some fuel we headed straight here. There's often a bit of a wait at lunch, but it's worth it and shouldn't be too bad as long as you have a small party. We started with a delicious salad of greens, tuna, mozarella and white beans. Then we shared two pasta dishes that were phenomenal. The Paglia e Fiero was made with yellow and green noodles with a rich, cream-mushroom-tomato sauce. The other was spaghetti carrettiera with a spicy and tangy tomato and garlic sauce. Be sure to try their pasta--it's made fresh on site! The service was fast and efficient, and while friendly enough the servers were pretty much straight to business. The prices were very reasonable--with most dishes under 10 euro. This was the worst meal i had in Florence i stayed for a week and relied on Yelp for this place. The Service is bad was given the wrong wine and had to ask for bread. The thing that some reviewers have a problem with this place is the thing I really liked: It lacks the stereotypical Florentine panache that so many restaurants around here seem to have. Don't get me wrong - I love that whole scene when you want a meal that lasts a long time and feels like an experience you should be recording on video to play back later. It's part of why you come to Florence. But a lot of times when I'm in Florence, I just want really really good food in a nice clean place with no hassle, no trouble with my (pretty much non-existent) command of the Italian language, and no surprises. This place serves what I think is some of the best food in Florence and they do it without a lot of pomp and circumstance. I don't agree that it's like a diner - it's way cooler than that. But it's not tiny, it's not downstairs, it's not dark, it's not tiny, they don't have old men for servers, and they don't have white tablecloths with a 20 piece table setting. The service is great and the staff speaks English very well. In particular, I appreciate the staff's excellent help with good ideas for an interesting and rewarding assortment of entree's. So: If food is the point, you want reasonable prices and a reasonably paced but not hurried meal, this is the place. Oh yeh - the food: I hate to be unoriginal but truly the grean and white pasta dish (Paglia e Fieno I think) mentioned frequently on Yelp is particularly excellent, and we thought the pizza (try pouring a little bit of the red peppered olive oil on it) was nearly as good as Gustapizza. First time we went with a big group and were completely ignored but figured it was just cause we were a large group of Americans. Second time I went service was alright so I figured the first was just a bad day. Tonight I went with three of my friends and was appalled by the service, terrible!!! The waitress knocked a fork off the table and my friend didn't even have time to pick it up before the waitress slammed a new one on the table and yelled at her, completely unprofessional. The inn keeper of our B&B recommended it. The name made us hesitate, but decided to go for it. Great tuscan meal. Simply prepared with fresh with local ingredients, so the flavor of everything shines through. They made fresh pasta right before they cooked and served it to you. We started with Insalata caprese (Salad with mozzerella and cherry tomatoes). Fresh and sweet. No hot house tomatoes here. Then we shared a pasta dish, Paglia E Fieno. It was so... good, I still think about it. The pasta was perfect, the suace was creamy, teasty and delicate. For secondi my husband had scaloppini al limone. I had a mussel and calamari dish made with mussel, chick pea and swiss chard in spicy tomato sauce. Both are deeeeelicious. The staff was very nice and the service speedy. After a short 10 minute wait on a Thursday evening. We were seated by a nice young waitress. I decided on the house beer while my wife decided on a glass of Chianti. Shortly after getting our drinks the waitress stopped back to take our order. We chose the margarita pizza and added extra garlic. We also went with the organic wheat pasta with a simple fresh tomato sauce. The pizza came out within 3 minutes followed by the pasta in another 3 minutes or so. The pizza was super thin and tasty. The pasta was freshly made in-house and you could tell. Overall this is a great place for delicious fresh pasta and excellent pizza. We highly recommend giving this place a try. read more
