Here in Florence, and after visiting the Academy and checking David out, husband and I ventured down a few streets and discovered this inviting cafe. When we arrived yesterday, we ended up dealing with cool temps, and I started to feel symptoms of a sore throat, so we found a pharmacy to get some soothing remedy, and my eye caught this cafe, which offered some smoothies and energy juices, one of which was the orange energy with ginger that we ordered. The juice is wonderful, and with the beneficial ingredients to nip any bug out. So pleased to have found this gem. The staff was pompt to welcome us at the door too. read more

This restaurant has two parts two it - pizza and other dishes. If you want pizza from the wood fire oven, then it's separate seating. We were seated almost immediately and given a menu to order. Honestly I felt a bit rushed and pressured to decide if we wanted to eat here and get a table. But as soon as we got a table, no one was interested in taking our order. I had to flag down a waitress and finally put in an order. We got one pizza to share (Which apparently is taboo in Italy but whatever). We ended up getting the eggplant pizza which was honestly quite good. The people next to us got tiramisu and but they weren't to impressed with it when I asked them. The waiters were kind enough to let us try some times of olive oil they had - there was a spicy once I loved but unfortunately we couldn't purchase it. At the end, we noticed a cover charge on the bill and asked about it - at which point the waitress got extremely irritated and told us - this is a cover charge, its normally for every food place in Italy, you have to pay it, there's nothing we can do about it. I'm aware of a cover charge but also aware that they are supposed to inform us about it - I told her as such and she pointed out the extremely fine print at the bottom of the back side of the menu. We were fine to pay it but didn't like how irritated she got and the deception of hiding the cover charge in fine print. Also just the overall rush with how they wanted us seated and wouldn't give us a minute to decide if we actually wanted to eat there or not. Super good! This restaurant has so many options. From a cafe with healthy breakfast/brunch options, to lunch with charcuterie boards, pastas, etc, to a pizzeria! I got the vegetables pizza with tomato, mozzarella, eggplant, zucchini, olives, and mushrooms and it was SO GOOD. Also very reasonably priced (€10)! I got it to-go on my way home and it was ready in less than 10 minutes after ordering. The staff was super nice, friendly, and organized/efficient with takeaway orders. My friend & I decided to try the pasta side - the setup is one long community table and they seat everyone right next to each other. Fortunately we had a great time meeting two sets of female travelers on either side of us, and apparently what we ordered looked good b/c they ended up ordering the same thing! It was also nice b/c we learned a few interesting things from the ladies about Florence restaurants: 1. The complimentary bread isn't complimentary. They'll bring bread and charge for it even if you didn't order it. All the restaurants charge for bread :) They said to consider it as gratuity since you don't have to tip in Italy. 2. You must ask for the receipt. While servers in the US are usu. in a rush to get you out so they can make money from the next guest, not so here. Loved that they could care less if you just linger around. 3. Still water isn't complimentary. BREAD - €2.50 As mentioned earlier, each person is charged -- so we paid €5 for bread. Enjoy dipping your bread in their EVOO, balsamic vinegar and parmesan! PAPPARDELLE CON FAGGETA AL TARTUFO - €13.00 Fontina & truffle pappardelle. Very nice. My friend and I shared this pasta and the wild boar - definitely more enjoyable than eating just our own dishes. CINGHIALE IN SALSA - €13.00 Wild boar w/ Jerusalem artichokes & raisins. Our server recommended this dish - I forgot how many hours the wild boar is cooked but it was enough to entice us to order. Lots of meat so it complemented well w/ the pasta dish. Honestly couldn't taste the artichokes or raisins though. PATATE ARROSTO - €5.00 Their roasted potatoes were very good. ARANCIATA - €3.50 Haha "splurged" on orange soda since still water was €2.50 :) Unlike me, please order their wine! Overall while the food didn't wow me, it was still enjoyable. My husband and I had lunch at the SimBIOsi Pizza shop next door and couldn't be happier with the food and service, but this 'sister' restaurant--featuring pasta--was a mixed bag, and in the end, we wouldn't recommend the restaurant despite it's good food. We came in for lunch although my husband wasn't hungry yet, so he ordered only a beer while I ordered a glass of wine and the truffle pasta. When the waiter heard my husband say that he wasn't ordering food, he huffed and said fairly indignantly, "so you're just having a beer?" Correct. That's all he wanted at the moment. The pasta was absolutely scrumptious, as was the wine, and even the small basket of bread slices they gave complementary was delicious. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and had the perfect balance of salt to truffle oil so that the flavors really stood out. It was al dente without being crunchy, too. When we had paid, my husband in his usual cheerful mood said ' grazie!' To the waiter, who actually responded with a displeased grunt. There was no mistaking the waiter's attitude toward us for not ordering more food. We paid 30 euro for lunch, so I don't know what this guy's problem was. It's one thing to have a bad experience yourself but to see other people equally if not MORE UPSET leaves me with a 2 star review. Decided to get the 5 course pasta taster and was super excited by my choices. The food was VERY tasty- no doubt. The appetizer was a beautiful onion dish that was awesome and set me up for high expectations. The 3 pastas I chose were the boar (best one), eggplant (eh) and risotto (ok). The desert was awful. SimBIOsi is by far my favorite place for pizza in Florence. Each of their pizzas has a different and exciting flavor profile. My favorite is the 'nduja with the fresh burrata on top. I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about simbiosi. The food offerings were good, lots of organic fare. The service (especially for Florence) is prompt and friendly. The restaurant is a little strange in one regard - as you enter the place you have to choose whether pasta or pizza - pasta in the restaurant to the left, pizza to the right - and they are divided by a wall. So I guess if Mrs G wanted pizza and I wanted pasta we would have to dine separately. But whatever At least on the pasta side it is essentially one long table, so as a couple you are sitting next to strangers. No problemo - most seemed to be English speaking - one racist older American couple who visibly were repulsed to be sitting near an interracial couple having fun with a young black couple sitting next to us (5 stars for the gorgeous couple :) ). So that can be risky but we had fun. I would give 4 stars overall (1 knocked off for the pizza/pasta divide) but I was almost tempted to only give 2 stars - why? Because of the disgusting sanitary situation in the bathroom(s). I leave at 3 because everything else is so good About the bathrooms - there is only one in each restaurant (M and W share - bad start!). Then (as is common in Florence for goodness sake) no seat on the toilet bowel!! So ladies - how does that work for you! The one I visited was so messy I can't post a pic, but Mrs G could not (rightly) use it. She tried the one on the pizza side - equally bad she says. Now that makes me think of watching the chefs in the open kitchen putting the finishing touches to my food with their bare hands. Where do they wash their hands??? Hopefully they have separate bathrooms just for them (I hope so!!!). Made me nervous I must say - but that was after I had eaten.
