Such a fun find! The ambiance is very chill and relaxing and the service staff was very attentive to our group. Our cocktails were served with water and popcorn and were very artfully crafted. This is the hidden gem of Florence. I took my wife there for a post-dinner cocktail, and she loved it. She had a few different drinks and thought they were all magnificent. The mixologist actually came over to our table personally and offered her two different bitters to choose from. The server was also very friendly, although it was harder to track her down when the bar got busier (to be expected). What a vibe!! I loved Mayday Club. As the first bar I went to in Florence, it stunned me by the friendliness of the owner, the overall feel, and the creativity of the drinks and decor. My friend is new to ordering drinks, and gave the owner a set of criteria - "sweet and fruity" or something like that. The owner whipped up a sweet, strawberry cocktail. We also talked a bit about New York, and I loved my drink. I can't remember the name exactly, but I believe it was a rum-based semi-sweet raspberry cocktail. So delicious. It was empty when we came (Tuesday night, lol) but the decor is super hipster and just lovely to look at. Was a little expensive, but worth the experience. Make sure to check in with Yelp! You get two shots - we had something like Kahlua, and he gave both of us shots even though only one of us checked in. Super generous! After positing up at a comfortable couch with a coffee table to put our drinks on, we browsed the menu throroughly. Though the drinks are more expensive here then you may find in other parts of the city, the craftsmanship and flavor make up for the added cost. We tried the Green Power, L'Erbaiolo, Special Guest, and the Sorelle Materassi. All were garnished beautifully with edible fruit and tasted amazing. This bar exceeded my expectations! I love craft cocktails and have had a difficult time locating a bar that could make a good one here in Italy. I had the special guest and another cocktail that had fig, mango, and rose (what was that called again?!). I found the drinks to be well balanced and flavorful. The decor was a hodgepodge of old cameras, funky light fixtures, and other colorful items. They only accept cash and the average cost of a drink is between 5 and 8 Euro. Goes down sweet and had bitter after taste, but got use to it in the end. Next was the l'armaiolo with tequila and very refreshing ginger--recommended for ginger lovers. Go here! I mean it! I first started going to mayday in 2002 and quickly became a regular. Now I go back every time I'm in Florence and for the last seven years and it just keeps getting better! Marco is at the top of his game and truly captures the alchemistic spirit of the city with his carefully crafted artisanal cocktails. Homemade Bacon infused maple bourbon...you're goddamn right! I mean, the man makes his own juice to mix with his cocktails. And no, not just any kind of juice. I'm talking juice made with a centrifuge so that it keeps all of its jammy goodness without oxidizing and tasting like fruit soup! I dont know how he does it, but man does he do it! Step away from the over-crowded college bars where bitches get drunk for the first time with sex in the beach shots...come on, friends...you're classier than that. Get your ass to mayday and listen to some ill jazz, have an actual conversation, and get to know the fair city of Florence beside its best bartender. And now mayday is even better than it was when I first started going here in '02 because Marco's got himself a wife and this lady is a real gem! We met Jenna on our last trip out in June this year and she is truly one of the warmest, most friendly hosts you could have. Real fruit purees and distilled liquors from little mountain enclaves made by old couples who don't like commercial businesses. This is a man with the necessary connections to make drinks that are truly one of a kind! And while he's behind the bar making all manner of deliciousness, Jenna (his partner) is in the front DJings and tending to guests needs. Once upon a time she lived in the United States, so if you want the inside scoop on Florence she is adept at multiple languages. Mayday is "up in the cut" and can be a little tricky to find on the winding streets of Florence, but that's a part of its charm. Bacon-infused bourbon with maple syrup and pressed Tuscany grapes is also a part of its charm. If you don't drink liquor, fear not! I spent a good 2 hours speaking to an interesting young man from Dubai who sipped on of-the-moment juice and fruit mocktails all night. Go here. You won't regret it. read more

If you're a real mixed drink lover, and you have the chance, you must go here. Since I was a bartender at one time, I really got into his infusions. Chemist level. No kidding. Great drinks and a fun atmosphere with some of the most interesting liqueur infusions (porcini mushroom liqueur and another of Parmesan cheese? Hmm). Well thought out cocktails all around. Had a whisky sour with a house made with a coriander vermouth. Eclectic decor and while there were a few tourists like ourselves, it didn't feel overtly touristy (maybe because we're here in December) definitely a highlight among the areas bars and clubs that seem to cater to very young crowds. They won't hesitate to tell you about a certain cocktail or give you details on all their homemade ingredients. We are visiting from out of town and were recommended to this spot by our host who is a local/regular here. They came highly recommended because "the owner is an alchemist who makes great drinks, and his wife is from New York..." We were excited to check out this spot. We stopped by the first time and were told by the hostess to come back later. Upon our return, the same hostess informed us there was no way she can serve us. We suggested we stand inside, and she said there was no room inside. Then we suggested we order our drink at the bar and stand outside because she had just served two people cocktails there. She told us they had a table inside and were outside for a smoke. She offered us no suggestions and was essentially telling us she would not serve us and we were not welcome. We were not being obnoxious, we were simply trying to give them business since they were highly recommended to us. Craft cocktails made with fresh purees and juices, in-house made mixers, high skilled bar man, events (20's cocktail speakeasy party is just an example) and funky arty decor. Sort of pricey as a warning (€7-8 for a cocktail) but its not everyday you go out for drinks (or maybe you do) and they are all hand craft with organic juices and homemade mixers.
