Everything mediocre. If you like mediocre, then this is the place for you. I went with family and we were expecting a lot more. My daughter ordered crab cakes and they have a lot of filler. She picked at her meal, but then just asked them to box it up. My meal sounded amazing--short ribs in sweet tea. And to tell you the truth--it would have been , had it not been drowned in soup! Had the chef thought that patrons like hot food!! Underneath the meat, there is an invisible layer of mashed potatoes. For Yardbird's touristy prices, you definitely should be getting a bit more potato on your plate! again, it was annoying to have to wade around all the liquid to find the layer of mashed potato. The texture of the meat was perfect. I would like this same meat with mashed potatoes on the side, and maybe 2-3 tablespoons of the broth. Mine has at least over a cup of broth! Definitely more soup than anything else! A place supposedly "known," for its fried chicken should have at least one thing on their menu that impresses all right?? The chicken!! Sadly, this was also a let down as it was not even crispy ,crunchy chicken that you think of, when you think of southern fried chicken. Actually, my mom's fried chicken is better. The texture wasn't right, they might need to deep fry it for a few more minutes. The seasoning was tasty though. We ordered the half a fried chicken, since thy don't sell pieces of chicken as appetizers, which I found strange. So you either have to be in the mood to order a chicken entree or you can't sample the chicken unless you order a half. Smh We all wanted beef/steaks/crab etc and thought it would have made sense to have chicken somewhere on the appetizer menu, since after all, this is what you're known for right? Next, let's talk about service--as it leaves much to be desired. They do not come back to ask "Is everything ok? Can I get you something?" There's no checking up at all. We also asked for a pitcher of water, but could not get that. So they had to come back every 5 minutes to refill our glasses. Next, if you enjoy SCREAMING--then this is the place for you. My waiter was right in front of me and yet we could not hear each other. Just a terrible and annoying experience. So bad, that I specifically asked if it could be turned down to no avail. so be prepared to scream throughout the dinner--yes, even to the people sitting right in front of you. I told my waiter "It's bad for business," seeing that they could not even hear what I wanted, nor, (like every other restaurant does) make suggestions/recommendations. It's just a poor business model because when they can make recommendations, and have the opportunity to connect with the client, the client usually takes those suggestions and adds on to their order. What a missed opportunity. don't even think about coming here for a 1st date! Service is impersonal and cold--as if they bring you the plate, set it down, and rush off. Again, the level of the music had lot to do with this. It was very basic. Like a 16 year old teenager could bring you you food and hurry off. Where are the "experienced" servers? My 2 positives--the mushrooms--I believe they are a side order, or they came with my daughter's crab cakes--are too die for! Smoky, grilled flavor with a buttery kick! I ate her leftovers and was surprised at what they did with mushrooms. Second, was the bacon, bourbon cake. At $18 it had better feed everyone--and it sure did. Our party of 6 all had a small piece and there was leftovers The bacon was sweet and crispy, ad the cake was moist. with the vanilla ice cream--it was perfect. Now if only Yardbird works on the temperature of food, lowers the damn music and teaches their staff the art of customer service, this place might be worth a second visit. But until then, there are way too many other spots in DC that you can have a conversation at dinner (which last time I checked, what we all want), and get nicer, friendlier service, with better food, for less of a price! Go there. Find those places! Beware for the poor service I received from the staff, they still tip themselves automatically 18%, when let's face it, we know how to tip in DC, and always give more than that for phenomenal service. But no one should be a fool and tip "extra," when it's not deserved, or "worked for." Lots of room for improvement here. Yardbird--DC's big disappointment. Founding Farmers--I'm on my way! read more
