To save you from reading what I am about to write, if they have DD or carryout, do that instead!
I was playing tourist in DC with my BFF, and we picked Yarbird as our lunch spot. It had been recommended to me by two different coworkers because they know that I am always on the hunt for good southern cuisine.
I made a reservation earlier that morning and ended up having to change the time. That went smoothly. I liked how I was sent a reservation reminder and a text saying my table was ready.
We get to the hostess station and check in. It looked like one hostess was in training, and while looking for a seat for us, the other hostess said no, don't ever mess up the rotation. I know that she messed up the rotation and didn't seat us at the table the other hostess intended.
My BFF and I were seated by the waiter's station even though there was plenty of available seating in the area.
It took 10 minutes before someone came to our table to even pour a glass of water. That person was Brian. I don't know if Brian is overworked, hates his job, or was having a bad day BUT I do know that he alone was responsible for making my first and last visit to Yardbird underwhelming and down right upsetting. Before you question my review, the place was not busy at all, it was 2pm in the afternoon, and there was at least one other waiter on the floor.
We have never been there, and Brian's intro was is it just you two as he took up the other two place settings. I looked at my friend and her reaction mirrored mine. Every word from Brian was uttered with sighs of annoyance using the fewest words possible in a tone that was barely audible.
When he returned to pour water in our glasses, my friend asked if the water was tap water or not. He was annoyed by that and any subsequent question that was asked.
Many minutes later, he returns with our simple drink orders of lemonade with drinks for another table on his tray. Now, I will say that Brian did go make my friend's lemonade a strawberry lemonade. However, before we can even say anything, he says he will be back to take our order after he drops off this other tables' drink order. Okay, at this point, I really don't want to eat here, but we didn't eat all day and had been walking around sightseeing. We were famished.
I kid you not, 10 minutes later Brian returns to take our order. Now, he never went over the menu, made suggestions, and has yet to welcome us to the establishment. So, his annoyance at answering any questions that my friend had was very upsetting to me.
We place our order, and the food comes out super quick. I'm talking like shockingly fast. I ordered the creme brulee waffles, a side of bacon, and the skillet cornbread. My BFF ordered the shrimp and grits minus the onions and tomatoes. (She's special, lol)
Everything was just meh. My waffles weren't as sweet as I thought they would be, but they were cute and tasty. Some warm syrup would've been nice as by waffle 2 they were kind of thick and dry. Im not sure, but i think one waffle actually had creme in it. The skillet cornbread was okay. I've had better at places like Stanford grill. My friend liked the grits, the PBR jus, and the shrimp in her dish. The shrimp and grits come with virginia ham at this establishment. That ham looks like thinly stripped deli ham the length of a hotdog. It was very off-putting. I would suggest dicing and pan searing the ham instead. Just a suggestion.
Brian comes by and we're done eating. He gets me a to go box for my cornbread. My friend goes to the restroom and Brian brings the check. He murmurs something about gratuity and tries to walk off. I hand him my card so I can get out of this place. 18% gratuity for 2 people is insane especially for this experience. I typically tip 15% for bad or mediocre service and 20-25% for good to excellent service. For the first time in my 50 years of life, I tipped nothing beyond the gratuity. read more
