I've visited Japan many times over dozen times. As US yakitory goes it's very good. Ambiance is similar to Japanese (tight, bit cramped) but it lacked kitchen-side seating which was weird. Booze selection is OK (no BYOB). Service was spotty with serve not knowing the menu but the Japanese gentleman was excellent. Food is quite authentic and the sashimi dishes were surprisingly fresh (for NJ). The small dishes were really good (best in US I've had) and is an 8/10 vs. Japan. Seasoning was inconsistent and sometimes a little on the bland side but we like that. The menu is extensive so you need time to go through it. Menu items have a mix of traditional and a few nouveau dishes but all good. Drawback is it's expensive for what you get. We paid $300 for two people including tip. read more

I have found some great and not so great izakaya, robata, and yakitori through my travels. They are far and few between. If you search for real japanese yakitori and robata in the NYC area, there are NOT a lot of choices. So when you discover this hidden gem in NJ, don't complain and enjoy your time at Yakitori 39. There is no designated parking space but there are places to street park around Teaneck. We made a reservation for dinner, but I think weekdays are usually less crowded enough to just walk in. The place is really cute with few tables. We sat down and looked at the menu. The menu was a little hard to decipher (so many things going on), but i had a friend who's been here in the past. We ordered different yakitori, and my favorites were pork belly and chicken thighs a the shishito pepper is also delicious. It is not spicy! Overall very disappointed with the food and service. We drove 30 minutes there, then waited approximately 30 minutes for food during a not busy time. We later found out our food went to a nearby table until it went cold, and I watched the waiter bring our food from the other table to ours. Each chicken tail screwer had pieces equivalent to the size of four round peas. Shiitake mushroom screwer had three tiny sliced pieces of mushroom. The other screwers were also overpriced for the portions we received. The chicken skin ponzu dish was 80% onion on the bottom and only a very small portion of actual chicken skin layered on top of the onions. I ordered a $5 drink from the menu which read "Yuzu Soda" and I received a Yuzu sparkling water in a small 8.5oz can which tasted like plain fizzy water. Restaurants may be cutting down on portions to increase profit margins, but this place is a scam. Save your time and money. Don't eat here. read more

One of the best yakitori places I have had in the east coast. The food was just excellent. The Momo or chicken thigh, was super juicy. Usually, chicken has some dry spots but, this skewer was juicy throughout. Twas most delicious. Our table also ordered the salmon inagari, okra tofu, chicken skewers with scallions, gizzards, and enoki bacon. I need to rave about the enoki bacon... It's a mushroom that is wrapped in bacon and oh my goodness.... The bite into this delicate deliciousness is something else. You get an a burst of sweetness from the mushroom immediately followed by a salty crunch of the bacon. The mixture works so well. All the others foods were above average. Everything was tasty and delicious. If I had one thing to say about this place... Is that the place is really cramped. The restaurant is tiny so seating is tight. I met up with a friend here for dinner. It's a small hole in the wall place, and it's a pretty good example of a Japanese izakaya (kinda like a tapas bar, but Japanese). I'm pretty sure the staff is Korean though. There's a few tables, and some bar seating. It's not the best place for a large group. Yakitori 39 specializes in yakitori, which is chicken meat that has been skewered and grilled, usually over charcoal. Yakitori is common bar food in Japan, but the drink prices are on the high side here. For chicken, you can get thigh, breast, wing, meatball, skin, liver, heart or gizzard. Kushiyaki, or anything that has been skewered and grilled is also served here. We got some chicken breast, chicken thigh, bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, scallions, asparagus, okra, king oyster mushrooms, and peppers. They were all pretty good, but the portions are very small for the price. One skewer of chicken costs almost $3, the bacon and mushroom skewer was $4, and all the vegetable skewers were over $2 a piece. The chicken comes from the Goffle Poultry farm, so I can see prices being a little higher, but he vegetables are way overpriced. You're paying over $2 for 5 pieces of okra, 4 peppers, 2 stalks of asparagus, OR 2 stalks of scallions. And it's really easy to eat a lot of these small skewers. The thing is, I have just returned from a multi-national tour of Asia, and there were many grilled meats and vegetables on skewers available for sale. Most of them were much bigger and tastier, and they cost literally pennies. When you have the opportunity to go to Japan and sample yakitori in all its underground izakaya glory, it's hard to come back to the states and relive it in just the same way in the plethora of overpriced and mediocre places in Manhattan that just miss the details. Yakitori 39, however, slapped my cynical self in the face and proved me wrong by a landslide. Every single dish I had the pleasure to try at Yakitori 39 was truly magical, from the cold soft dishes to the piping hot crispy tempuras, to the yakitori main events themselves. The whole time, my mouth was letting out gasps or remarks of disbelief when I wasn't chewing. Just the amount of delight you get from the ingenious food- dip pairings, the impeccable char you get on the skewers and the immense attention to detail put towards getting a perfect cook on literally everything despite having such a large and diverse menu is truly special and astounding. This establishment is clearly a labor of love, and it feels to me that every dish is treated with an intensity of respect that you uniquely get from Japanese cuisine when done with true adherence to traditional values. I cannot scream from the rooftops enough about the perfection of this restaurant. Below are my recommended favorites but if you didn't already get it from my obsessive soliloquy above, you really cannot go wrong with anything you pick. Food 8/10 This is the second time we are here. Their chicken skewers are pretty good, and I especially like skin and neck because they are very tender. Their teriyaki sauce is rather salty comparing to other yakitori place, and I do prefer sweeter sauce. We also ordered the Hakata hotpot. Comparing this to the Hakata Hotpot place in st.marks, I would say their portion is smaller (also 4 dollars cheaper per person). Their intestine is fattier and more chewy, and the soup is less spicy. They also have burdock in the soup. Overall it's still decent since they don't specialize in hotpot. 3 words. Everything very Good. I had met up with Boo Boo and her coworkers here for dinner/ HH and we probably ordered around 20 plates of food. I wish I took pictures of the stuff we ate. The best was the bacon wrapped mushroom. It was lightly smokey and the mushroom absorbed all of the bacony goodness (fat). The grilled chicken skins tasted like pork rinds (which was good). The ramen was really tasty. It was different from other ramen I've had. It was very rich and thicker than usual. The broth was pork based and a lot of collagen. The sweet potato and okra dish was awesome too. It was slimey because of the okra. The fried tiny makeral (fish) sardine size was great with beer. I don't know how the chef didn't over cook it. The guts did not burst out of it. Yet it didn't have a strong fishy taste either. The grilled duck and chicken skewers was very generous in meat. It was lightly basted in sauce. First of all, expect you are going to pay NYC price here, I would say for 2 ppl, you will probably end up paying around $ 80~ $120, it's not cheap. The Good: Appetizer items are good, the portion is quite generous, the fried tofu is probably the biggest I have ever seen in my life. The chicken porridge is huge portion, too. The price of these appetizer is actually very reasonable given the portion is very generous. The Bad: For yakitori, it's about $2.6 + per skewer, you can choose you want it to be grilled with sea salt OR Japanese BBQ ( teriyaki) sauce. I feel the yakitori I ordered that day really disappointed me, I chose sea salt flavor because I wanted to taste the flavor of the food itself, the yakitori skewers I had that day were just plain. One of the reasons that they are not delicious is probably because they were under-grilled, so they were just not as crispy as they should be, If you are going to order chicken skin or the intestine, make sure you told them you need " extra crispy", otherwise the chicken fat attached to the skin will make you feel very hard to chew and swallow. I always order chicken skin while going to the yakitori place, but this could be the worst I ever had. I was also very disappointed to the grilled octopus ($4 /each) , it looked like it was not grilled at all. Local authentic yakitori that's sort of out of nowhere in Bergen. But surprisingly, a lot of people know about the place and usually busy on weekends but no waiting. It's perfect for a low key date or gathering with beer or sake. Food is decent, a lot of items on the menu like normal izakayas, service is good, but just be mindful that when they get busy, the food turnaround time takes long.. i think they make each one, one by one, so it takes time on weekends but as long as you are aware, it should be fine. I have to say, this was truly an authentic Japanese-run hole-in-the-wall restaurant gem found in the Teaneck area, hidden away and tucked away. I was majorly surprised! Original Japanese waiters and waitresses, seemingly a small family-owned business, involving Japanese chefs speaking in Japanese with one another rather than Chinese with one another. Let us be real! A lot of Japanese restaurants are run and owned by Chinese individuals or having Chinese chefs, which is not truly authentic Japanese, of course. So, running into a Japanese restaurant with Japanese individuals running the show, so to speak, is truly eye-opening and jaw-dropping. The service was pretty decent. The staff is incredibly amiable and easy-going. The food was a little bit on the pricey side. But, of course, we are all in a pandemic crisis, and several small businesses are suffering tremendously. We can only imagine how it must feel to be a small-business owner, with his or her life savings poured into the business to continue running during a pandemic. Their skewers are pretty decent in terms of the number of selections to choose from. It is just one skewer per order on the menu. You have to order by skewers. The interior ambiance is truly that of Japan - a tiny, small, narrow restaurant with a sidebar overlooking the chefs cooking right in front of you with a small selection of tables and chairs to sit behind the sidebar. This is a truly traditional style of such indoor-seating Japanese restaurants that you will find in Japan right here in Jersey. During the pandemic, there is limited indoor dining. There is no outdoor dining. There is just no space for a table outside their restaurant storefront. The parking is also limited. There is street parking with parking meters during the weekdays (Mon-Fri). The weekends are free street parking. Oftentimes, reservations should be done for this restaurant. This restaurant tends to get busy (on a normal/non-pandemic day, that is). However, during the pandemic, the restaurant is pretty much.... well, limited. You can just walk in for an indoor dining seating. They do practice social distancing of tables. It is far less crowded, these days. You can just walk in during the pandemic. But, you know... Attentiveness is pretty responsive during the pandemic, of course. There are two waiters/waitresses during the pandemic, and 2 chefs at this time. Definitely a recommend! Great yakitori spot in Teaneck right next to Peck Peck chicken. I have been here a couple of times with my cousins and enjoyed it every time. They usually do reservations for parties 2 or more. If you are dining by yourself you can sit at the bar area. Pretty good yakitori spot. I highly recommend the pork belly, it was nicely crisped on the outside and tender on the inside. The tsukune with sauce was pretty good but slightly bland. The skirt steak and the chicken with scallion (both breast and thigh) were forgettable. It may be that they cooled a little bit too much before I ate them, but they weren't anything special. We also had the smoked duck salad (nice and fresh. large portion), potato salad (skip it) and the onigiri with salmon (salmon was over salted).
