Which led me to come out to town for their Maguro Fest at their store and let me tell you the quality of their fish, so good it melts in your mouth. I have already told everyone around me about my terrible experience and will not want to celebrate any occasion here in the future. I didn't even want to tip but felt bad and left it as a severance pay that I will never be dining here again... I also don't understand how Yelp lists this place as a "good for kids". It's not. There wasn't a kids' menu and the dishes were not kid-palate friendly (other than maybe the basic California style hand roll). For example, the fried tofu had shredded ginger on top that permeated the dish and the karaage had a very mild (but present!) note of spice that reminded me a bit of buffalo sauce. Our waiter didn't even give us a heads up or point us in the direction of any dishes to consider for the kids (surely we must not be the only family who has brought kids to this restaurant). Lastly, I understand that the tempura brownie is popular but after tasting the "tempura" on the tofu I'm sure the brownie is just the star that shines through. The "tempura" on the tofu was gummy and not the authentic Japanese tempura we are used to (my husband, who is part Japanese, said to me "What is this?! Cornstarch?"). This is probably a great restaurant for drinks and hanging out with some adult friends but the rolls and appetizers were just not to our tastes. We were also sat outside when the restaurant was near empty inside and out (we went around 4PM) and it was a hot day (though the AC wasn't particularly cool enough for my preference inside either).

TUCKED AWAY GEM! 5.0…read more What a hidden gem! After doing a little research, we discovered this wonderful traditional Japanese restaurant tucked away along a street we visit often. From our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, it's an easy walk across Kalākaua Avenue and down Beach Walk toward the ocean. We know this area well, as another of our favorite restaurants, Ginza Bairin, is located just across the street. Wasabi Bistro is nestled behind The Breakers Hotel. Enter through the front entrance to the hotel, past the pool toward the back of the property and you'll find this casual, unassuming restaurant. The décor is simple, creating a peaceful setting that feels pleasantly removed from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. No Japanese meal is complete without sake, so we started with a carafe to accompany our dinner. It's always the perfect pairing. For dinner, we ordered: * Gyoza * Sashimi Deluxe (eight varieties of fish, two pieces each) ~ exceptionally fresh, generously portioned, and colorfully presented. * Black Cod ~ One of my all-time favorites, and this version was perfectly cooked with excellent seasoning. * Papaya Seafood Motoyaki ~ A baked papaya filled with shrimp, scallops, vegetables, and their savory miso motoyaki sauce. It's one of the restaurant's signature dishes, and for good reason. It was absolutely delicious. * Assorted Mochi Ice Cream ~ The perfect sweet ending to a wonderful meal. Every dish was nicely prepared and well seasoned, showcasing the quality of the ingredients. The service was warm and efficiently paced without ever feeling rushed. With so many dining options in Waikiki, Wasabi Bistro easily stands out as a restaurant we'll happily return to on future visits. If you're looking for authentic Japanese cuisine in a relaxed, tucked-away setting, this is a place well worth seeking out.

The crab in the (California) roll itself is made of real crab which completely changes the flavor profile in a positive way. - Chicken Karaage: 7/10. The karaage was good, nothing mind blowing but I always say that the sauce makes the chicken and they did not give us any sauces. I ended up requesting for siracha and mayo which I then mixed together but even then. - Vegetable Tempura: 9/10 I really enjoy vegetable tempura in general and this was no exception. The assorted vegetables had various textures and flavors which made it very enjoyable to eat. - Washugyu Ribeye Steak: 6/10. I don't recommend ordering this. It wasn't bad per se but for $58, I expected more. There were a couple of completely inedible pure fat pieces. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't allow enough time for the full omakase experience, so I decided to order four chirashi sets for pickup to enjoy with my coworkers instead. Given Sushi Sho's reputation and its location at The Ritz-Carlton, I had very high expectations. Unfortunately, the pickup experience was surprisingly unpleasant and honestly left a terrible impression. When I walked up to the restaurant and opened the door, a tall staff member in a suit immediately reacted as though I had done something seriously wrong and shut the door in my face. There was no friendly greeting or explanation that pickup guests should wait outside. I was simply left standing there wondering what I had done wrong. A few minutes later, he came outside with my order in a paper bag. Since I'm visiting Honolulu and was bringing the food back to share with coworkers, I politely asked whether they provided spoons and wasabi. His response was, "Chopsticks are inside," delivered with such an unpleasant and dismissive attitude that I genuinely felt uncomfortable for even asking. I completely understand that chirashi is traditionally eaten with chopsticks, and I personally have no issue using them. However, some of my coworkers are not comfortable using chopsticks, which is why I asked a very simple question about spoons. I don't think that warranted being treated as though the request was ridiculous. And regarding the wasabi -- when we opened the boxes, the amount provided was incredibly tiny, as shown in the photo. For four chirashi sets, asking whether there was additional wasabi really did not seem like an unreasonable request. The food itself may come from a highly respected restaurant, but hospitality is also part of the experience, especially at a restaurant of this caliber and at a property like The Ritz-Carlton. I wasn't expecting omakase-level service for a takeout order, but I certainly expected basic courtesy. I had genuinely hoped that this pickup experience would make me even more excited to return for the full omakase someday. Instead, it left me questioning whether I would want to come back at all. Very disappointing, especially considering how highly regarded Sushi Sho is.

The staff was also incredibly kind and attentive throughout our visit. Now let's get to the OYSTERS! We ordered two rounds, and they were fresh and delicious. But those SAUCES?! Listen! They didn't serve the typical cocktail sauce we're used to. Instead, the oysters came with lemon and a couple of different sauces that were FREAKING AMAZING. Whatever they're doing with those sauces, KEEP DOING IT! They took the oysters to another level. I also had the Chu-Hi Lychee, and OMG! So refreshing and so good. My partner and I are huge oyster lovers and eat them regularly - we've easily had hundreds over the years. This was our first time trying oysters in Hawaii, so we were really excited to stop here known for their oysters! Unfortunately, after tasting the oysters, my partner immediately felt something was off. He stopped eating them, checked the others, tried one more, and decided they didn't seem fresh to us. We can't say what caused it - it could have been an issue anywhere along the supply chain, they kept telling us they got them fresh this morning, but we didn't feel comfortable continuing to eat them. The most disappointing part wasn't the oysters themselves, it was how our concerns were handled. We let the staff know right away, hoping for some understanding or a solution, whether that meant offering another dish, or simply acknowledging our concerns and not allowing us to pay. Instead, we were told we'd still need to pay for them, and that was the end of the conversation. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. We paid our bill and left most of our meal untouched. We had ordered a dozen oysters but only ate three before deciding not to continue. We also ordered the oyster shooters, which we didn't end up eating. Instead, we headed upstairs to Genius Lounge, where we had a wonderful meal. It's a shame because we were prepared to eat down oysters too. It was disappointing to have our first oyster experience in Hawaii end this way, and it definitely put a damper on what we had hoped would be a memorable visit. I understand that issues with fresh seafood can happen, and I'm not trying to place blame for something that may have been outside the restaurant's control. I just wish the customer service had matched the situation. A little empathy and a willingness to make things right would have completely changed how we felt walking away. Perhaps this is just not a place where tourists are welcomed.
