I usually don't leave bad reviews, but this experience was honestly awful and I'm still upset thinking about it. I've been to this salon a few times before for simple pedicures. The work was always rough, but it was cheap, so I ignored it. This time I wanted both my hands and feet done before a weekend trip to LA, and I specifically chose a very simple polka dot design because I already knew not to expect good hand-drawn art here. Things started going wrong immediately. While I was getting my pedicure, the woman doing my nails came over and started gluing on nail tips while literally standing beside me. Because of the angle she was working from, the nail shapes were completely crooked. She didn't even cure them properly with the lamp at that point. Then I looked at my toes after the pedicure and was shocked. I still had an old extension left on one of my big toenails from a previous set, and instead of properly removing it first, they just painted and worked over it. One side had already come off because I removed it myself earlier, while the other side was still attached. Instead of removing the remaining extension and fixing it properly, they just painted over everything. The lengths didn't even match between the two toes. There were visible flaws everywhere. The manicure experience was even worse. The technician kept making me cure my nails under the UV lamp nonstop for over 20 minutes, basically one hand constantly under the light. When I got home that night, my nail beds were hurting badly. Typing, touching my phone screen, or putting pressure on my fingers was painful. It genuinely felt like my fingers had been burned from overexposure. On top of that, the attitude was terrible. At one point she messed up an entire row of polka dots, and when I politely asked her to redo it, she looked visibly annoyed. She didn't even clean it properly before painting over it again. As more customers came in, you could clearly feel the rush and impatience. She just wanted to finish as quickly as possible regardless of quality. I'm not someone with extremely high standards. I only expected basic nail shaping and clean work. Instead, the nail shape looked terrible, there was no structure or apex at all, and the final result honestly looked worse than if I had done nothing. The quality, the carelessness, and the attitude were unacceptable. I ended up disputing the charge with my bank because the service was that bad. read more

I will never return to Y2K Nails in Davis, CA. I went in to get my nails done for graduation--an important and celebratory moment--but what I experienced was deeply disappointing and offensive. The technician was rude, unprofessional, and displayed racist behavior. She did not properly prep my nails, handled me roughly, rolled her eyes when I made a simple request, and overcharged me. She also applied the design in the same direction on both hands (which is not standard), and when I pointed it out, she claimed her tool didn't work and that "it was all she could do." When I asked her name, she lied and gave me the name of a colleague I personally know--completely unacceptable and dishonest. The behavior noticeably worsened once most of her colleagues left for the day. Another technician nearby witnessed everything and did nothing. Throughout the appointment, she spoke about me in another language, which I called her out on. She eventually apologized, but the damage was done. The overall atmosphere was unwelcoming and racially charged. To top it all off, three nails popped off after just one week. I strongly urge you to think twice before spending your money here, especially if you are a person of color. No one deserves to pay for poor service, low quality, and discriminatory treatment. My wife got the only guy - so you know to avoid - and a couple hours later her big toe was bothering her and felt like it was getting infected. When my service was done I noticed my thumb was not completely dry so it was crinkled. The very next day, my pointer finger nail broke! So I went in & got my thumb & pointer finger re-done. Now it's a couple of days later... my thumb & pointer finger is in need of a repair again!!! Love love love this nail salon. I have gotten gel mani 3 times and 1 pedicure and they perfect it every time. I like how they take their time with the nails and are not rushing to get it done, and if you don't like something they will change it for you without complaining. They are very kind. I currently live in Marin and drive to Davis to this specific nail salon because they are so talented and the prices are very fair. Y2K was highly recommended to me and after a lot of Yelp scrolling, I went in as a walk-in. I was attended to very quickly but the nail tech was not very attentive and was just as quick with my nails. She started to get a little frustrated when I didn't automatically do things, but I've never gotten my nails done before and she wasn't speaking to me at all, just gesturing or making impatient noises when I didn't put my hands under the lights or into her hands. The design was slightly off from what I asked for, which is fine, except it's obviously uneven when you look at my nails. There are bubbles in several nails and they're all shaped differently and unevenly. You can't tell unless you look close but I feel like these are beginner mistakes? The reviews have mentioned that this place is cheaper than others and from the research I've done, that seems true. But from my experience, you get what you pay for (and even then you might be paying too much). read more

There was no wait at Y2K Nails, so my two friends and I were seated right away. They both got acrylics ($~50), and I got a mani/pedi with a hot stone massage & callus removal (~$40). We all loved how our nails turned out (though my friend with darker skin said they did not have an acrylic base closer to her skin tone). However, all of us said that we were dissatisfied with the lack of dead skin removal. Though they cut our cuticles, they only pushed each nailbed back once, and under a second, without cutting/removing dead skin from the sides of our nails. I'm running around on my feet all day at work, and that's why I upgraded past the regular mani pedi. The callus removal was very short, under 20 seconds, and very gentle. I could have done it myself at that point. The hot stone massage was also shorter than I anticipated, and in my mind, not worth the upgrade. If you're looking for fast service with a good finish, but not much skin care, then Y2K is perfect. My friends showed them pictures of what they wanted, and they replicated it well. They loved the price and convenience, but we all agree that we're going to need better dead skin care. I had a great time, enough to come give them 5 stars. I requested gel nail removal only and was able to be seen right away, even though they had other customers. I sat down immediately and the staff / clients were actually playful with me like, "Relax! Sit down! Get your nails re-done." Maybe I looked like I needed a break lol but either way I was encouraged by the prices and how comfortable they made me feel and got them done. They even advised me on how to make my removal + new color services more cost efficient on their menu to save ME money. That has never happened at any salon I've visited. The 2 services took 1 quick hour. Shop was peaceful with a fan running and breeze coming in. The tech was also careful to ask about and work around a broken nail I had. The massage chair was good / more varied than the average. Yes the callus scrub during the pedicure was under 20 seconds like someone said, but the lotion massage was longer and to me made up for it. I was very disappointed with my service. I came in for a gel nail removal service, as my nails were chipping (my nails were done at a different place and wanted to get my nails off). When taking off my nails, it felt as if it was her first time ever doing nails. She scrapped my nail without any alcohol and when she did use the foil around my nails, she didnt leave them on long enough and used the drill. She pressed the drill hard on my nails that my nails and the nail bed were hurting. This is my second recent visit to Y2K and I couldn't be happier. The first gel manicure Heidi did for me lasted nearly three weeks without a single chip or lifting (a first for me!). She really takes her time to get the exact nail shape you want and paint the gel polish just right. I'm really happy with my recent manicure so much so that I went back the next day for a gel pedicure. It looks great!
