A very nice local restaurant! We noted our visit here and everything was very tasty. We came in on a weeknight and were taken care of the owner who seems to take great pride in running his restaurant in both the front and back of house. The selection of food was vast enough to choose from and made it difficult to make a choice. Overall our food was good, but definitely pricey per tapa. The papas bravas and skirt steak were our favorites! I love calamari, but their dish wasn't too memorable. Although I will say I wasn't blown away by anything in particular , I would say xunta is worth stopping by to try something new. read more

I've been to Xunta a number of times, and have always liked it. The last time in appears that things have changed. The service was extremely poor. It was a busy Friday evening, and there were 2 primary servers and someone at the pass running food/coordinating. It took about 20 minutes to get us menus and take a drink order (and waters to table). We let it pass. We finally ordered our food. The food runner (older gentleman) brought our order to the wrong table. The couple touched the food as it sat there. The waitress realized it was sent to wrong table, went there to collect it, brought it back to the pass, and then delivered the same plate to our table. I immediately sent it back after the waitress confirmed that it was the same plate that sat at the other table. This changed the mood for the evening. All additional plates came out, and as always the food is pretty good! However, service was absolutely atrocious. We waited on our waitress the entire evening from taking our order, getting our food to table, and getting the check. Them they started cleaning tables which wasn't even done properly leaving a giant mess while the waitress took time to check her phone and text. We skipped dessert - it was just too stressful. One day I may return but there is better service in other places, especially at the price you pay here. read more

This is a diamond in the rough. A restaurant that shouldn't be overlooked. If you're looking for a change from the same routine, you should try Xunta. We've been here several times and I'm surprised to see the restaurant is not full because the food is great. Tapas or full portions, wonderful Spanish selections. We all shared the potatoes with their special sauce, spinach and chick peas, string beans with garlic and shrimp with their special sauce. I had the scallops for my meal, the tapas portion and they were cooked just right. The skirt steak rare was enjoyed by others, as was the octopus. All 7 of us had a wonderful meal. This place is the real deal! This is the place where I discovered Pappas Bravas, which was love at first bite, and as you know.... true love lasts foreverrrr. Been here a couple times. Admittedly, I am a ho & a half for tapas and this was a definite must-check-out. First time I went with a GF for Sunday br...lunch. Tried 1/3 of the menu (no shame, no guilt), including the papas bravas obvi. Carmen (the owner/manager) greeted us personally and chatted with us throughout our meal, but not in a weird, overbearing way. She was lovely to get to know. I then went back w/a business dinner with clients and ordered... well, the rest of the menu and it was a hit! These guys were from Europe and Barcelona was one of guy's favorite places on earth. So legit, the food got rave reviews from a collection of very 'well-eaten' folks. Recommend trying everything! No joke. Keep the tradition of tapas alive by literally trying different collection of plates whenever you go back. Of course, along the way I'm sure you'll discover some favorites that will likely become staples, but the menu should be explored. My friend and I visited Xunta on an early Saturday evening, I recommend making a reservation if you plan to dine in. Street parking was plentiful when we arrived, so we had no issue getting a close spot. The restaurant itself had a weird odor when we walked in, but we became anosmic to it quickly. It is BYOB, so we requested sangria to add our wine to. I didn't think it was too flavorful for a red sangria, I mostly tasted my wine. At $16 a pitcher, I would have liked a little more oomph. The tapas sized servings were plenty for the two of us and we were both happy with the vegetarian options available. Out of all our plates, we absolutely loved the patatas bravas. The sauce was to die for, a perfect hint of spice to compliment the starch of the potatoes. Every table in the restaurant had an order of it and I can see why. This is a nice spot to visit for date night or with some friends. Small plates, big flavor. read more

What a joke of a place. As an epicure as well as a gastronome - this place was an epic disappointment. Mind you, we had been super excited to try it. So we ended up there this past Saturday. 1) Patacas Baravas- just naming some dish in Spanish is not enough. Deep fried diced Potatoes tossed in a mayo barbecue sauce. For God sake! 2) Empanada Galega de polo - The filling such an odd taste. Peculiarly bland . Atleast add a drizzle of sauce around the serving plate! 3) Gambas Ao Allos- A few tough shrimps served in a hot watery mixture of garlic, paprika and salt. Not good! 4) The skirt steak was ok but boy that Chimichurri sauce was neither chimichurri nor delightful! **Now to top all of this. There was a big senior citizen party seated right next to us - apparently the owner's relatives. Throughout our excruciating 1.5 hour meal there - the lady owner hovered around that table serving them meals, dishes, hugs, kisses etc etc. And guess what she did not bother to even say "HI" or so much as pass a smile to the four small tables inches away from her relatives. Such despicable and UnProfessional behavior. We felt we had entered the owner's home uninvited. Never Again though! read more

Finally got to try some tapas in Caldwell. Yes, it's not Madrid but for the US, it was some great flavors and solid food. The place is small and cozy which makes you want to linger to enjoy your meal and BYOB. They have two sizes of most of the plates so they can accommodate large parties which I liked. Service was adequate and they brought each plate out in what felt like good timing. We split the patatas bravas ($9) which were a bit too spicy for my liking and the spice just seemed a little bit off. Absolutely loved the pemento piqullo recheros ($12) which were super flavorful and well cooked. We also got the chicken empanada ($10), Spanish tortilla ($8), and the gambas ao allo ($13) - all delicious, good sized portions, and felt fairly authentic. We had to splurge and have a piece of the chocolate torte ($8) for desert which was sweet, rich, and a perfect way to end a great meal. Definitely recommended for when you are in the mood for tapas in the area- parties big and small will walk away with a good meal. read more

It was a special night, and we wanted to find a local place to eat that none of us would normally try. This floated to the tapa the list, so we meandered the few feet over to race home with the fresh, hot goodies. We went for a large sampling of dishes, so please excuse me if I forget one or two. Meats: We had the short rib and the chimichurri steak, plus the chorizo platter. The short rib was okay, but nothing I would get again. It's only available in a dinner portion but not a whole lot bigger than the tapas portions of other dishes, the meat was not as tender as I know short rib can be, the flavor was okay. The chimichurri steak was amazing. It instantly brought me back to Argentina. Flawlessly cooked (medium rare), seared to perfection with excellent flavor. The chorizo platter - skip it. Dry meats, suitable for toppings on a sandwich but nothing special worth the price. I was weighing the platter (we got all 3 meats together) vs. one of the chorizo tapas dishes, and in hindsight, should have chosen the tapas (probably the ao Vino). Seafood: They were unfortunately out of the seafood we most wanted, the scallops. They were also out of the salt cod bacalao I was so looking forward to trying. So we went for octopus and squid. The octopus was cooked well, not rubbery, but not particularly distinguished in flavor. It came with a flavorful sauce that curiously did little to change the profile of the overall dish. The squid was great. It's squid in squid ink, served over the rice. That dish has a lot of flavor and just a lot of character from the ink. We all went back to that one. Let's see, what else was there? Croquetas - mostly bread, really couldn't find much of a trace of ham in them. They were okay by themselves, the sauce was weird by itself, but yet together, they came out to be very tasty. Just lacking in ham. We also had the stuffed dates - they tasted mostly of bacon and cheese, no date flavor there despite dates usually contributing to the texture and flavor profile more strongly. Hindsight being 20/20, I know what I'd order differently. My verdict is that there are some 5 star dishes here but also some 3 star dishes. Nothing bad, and I can't comment on service or atmosphere since I picked up the dish to go from the back, but that rounds out to 4 stars. I hope Xunta will continue to review their menu and seek to improve. read more

I've been really excited to give this place a try, and booked a day of Saturday night reservation. Despite being able to book a Saturday night reservation same day, the place was packed from the moment we walked in until the moment we left. Having spent some time in Barcelona, and regularly seeking out Tapas deliciousness in NYC, hopes and expectations were high. Recommended number of dishes is 2-3 per person, and I think five was an appropriate amount of food for two of us. Queixo Manchego - pretty standard offering. You get three slices of bread to go with 5 slices of manchego and a small cube of quince paste. Nice combination of flavors... only criticism is that the quince paste is pretty thick so if you plan on spreading it on the bread, you may mangle the bread a bit. Patacas Bravas - excellent. Nice generous portion of potatoes that were both tender and crisp, and tossed in a rich, slightly spicy sauce. We cleared the entire plate, no problem, and I wouldn't be against ordering the large next time. Empanada Galega de Polo - this is probably not going to be what you expect if you didn't check out the pictures before. It's basically what I would describe as a slice of a meat pie with a phyllo dough crust. The filling has a texture similar to taco meat. It's an ok dish. Not bad, but I don't know that I'd order it again. Polbo Romesco - octopus, done perfectly. The tapas portion is a single tentacle, but it's cooked to tender perfection with a restrained amount of char and crispness from the grill. This was really excellent. Pan Con Tomate, Queixo e Xamon - this was the last dish of the night, and sadly, ended on the meal for us on a low note. While admittedly we were expected a traditional pan con tomate dish, had we read the description, we would have know that wasn't what we were getting. The portion here is very generous with 4 pieces, but it just didn't work for us. It's a ton of melted cheese with raw slices of tomatoes and topped with ham. It just didn't work for us. Total for 5 dishes came out to $68 after tax, before tip. I think I need to come back and order some different dishes. The octopus and potatoes were just so really well done, I'll give it another shot with a few different items. read more
