I've been coming to the Wu Wei since its early years, and it's one of my favorite places in Marin. I love the tea, especially the green teas, as well as the hot and cold drinks and the small plates. The music is always great, and the light in the space is really special. It's also a place where I've met new friends and colleagues, discovered new communities, and found a creative space to read, write, and reflect. The staff are consistently warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, and make it easy to settle in and stay awhile, whether you're meeting someone, working, or simply enjoying the space. The Friday night DJs bring great house music, and the back patio can feel like an oasis in the middle of a busy area. There really isn't anything like the Wu Wei in the Bay Area. I came here with a friend who was visiting from out of town and overall the experience was really nice. The atmosphere was great--inside was a little crowded, so we decided to sit outside, and I'm glad we did. The backyard area had cozy pillows and covers on the seats, which made it feel really comfortable. The weather was beautiful that day, and it felt like the perfect spot to enjoy a drink. The drinks themselves were really good and reasonably priced, and we got them pretty quickly, which was a big plus. For the most part, everything was smooth and enjoyable. The only reason I'm leaving this review is because when we were leaving, one of the staff members (not our server) stopped us and borderline asked if we had paid--in front of a group of people. We had, of course, already paid, so it felt uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing. Let's me begin by saying I am incredibly saddened to write this review as I love the space, the concept, and the guests. The young woman who helped us with our drinks was also pleasant and seemingly kind. The management however, or whomever answers their phones, and the gentleman who helped my friend yesterday retrieve a sweater mistakenly left less than 14 hours earlier, were extremely rude in a way that left me and my friend jarred. It seemed so counter to the energy they are trying to cultivate here, and I was reminded of the pseudo SF hippie attitude, who will preach one thing and then act another. It's really unfortunate that is the case, because I would have returned again and again and recommended this spot, but now I find myself doing the opposite. read more

My review is not so much about the food and service here, but about the procedure for signing up at the weekly open mic which occurs every Sunday around 7pm. I have been a regular open mic attendee here since it first opened, when it had other hosts (whom I happen to prefer more than the current open mic host, but I will not mention names). So I have been going for a long time to this open mic, though not every week. I do live locally and I am an establlished singer-songwriter. The only problem is the way the open mic hosts insists on texting him as a means to getting on the open mic list, and he is absolutely firm about not accepting any other signup method. Well, I told him many times that I don't have a cell phone so I can't text. He suggested asking someone else to text him for me, but I don't know anyone who would do that for me, and not even the staff was open to helping me text him because they're too busy (I did ask). He also wouldn't even let me come in person and sign up about an hour before the open mic. I mean he was clearly firm about the rule about texting to get on the list. I told him I didn't think that was very accommodating to a local songwriter who is also an older person, and that it seemed he was favoring getting his loyal friends on the list, who live far away, over a local Fairfax musician who is also established as a recording artist and performing songwriter. I felt very hurt by his elitist sign up rules for the open mic, and I left a review on the Wu Wei Facebook page about this. As soon as I did, this person messaged me on Facebook and said that he is no longer my friend (he "unfriended" me on Facebook) and I'm never invited back to "his" open mic. I was very hurt by that. Not only that, but I also realized someone (he?) blocked me as a follower to the Wu Wei Facebook page, basically inferring that I'm never invited to come back to Wu Wei at all! I guess "My Way or the Highway" is the Wu Wei (rhymes!), unfortunately. I'm very hurt by this and I think this open mic host is cruel and rigid. One can't help thinking he may also be ageist. I tried to get help from the owner about this issue (before he cut me off), but she seemed to be more supportive of this open mic host than me as a customer. I also don't have great history with the owner, either, because at one point (during an earlier time when she thought I was fantastic), she kept hugging me without my consent, and when I finally set boundaries and said I don't want to be hugged without consent, she froze me out, refused to book me for a gig there--once again proving "My way is the highway" at Wu Wei. read more

I have real love for this place! I've been going regularly for about 7 years. The drinks are very special with a wide variety and the staff is very friendly and happy. There are a ton of regulars who formed friendships, and newcomers are always welcome at events. The atmosphere is really acclectic and relaxed. I was recently remembering my time in San Anselmo and how quaint it was. One of my highlights was visiting this tea house. My only regret is that I don't live closer. I'd recommend this spot to anyone who wants to eat from a menu that is interesting, well loved and nurtured, and delicious. There are so many tea options and quick bites that are so good for your body. The staff was kind and the owner even came to chat with me. I think she has a picture of me as well haha. As much as I understand that each business has its rules, there's a way to treat clients and this woman was just plain rude. Not even sure it's legal to refuse a service dog but that's beyond the point. If you're working in the service industry learn how to be polite and treat a customer with respect. I accidentally discovered this magic gem and decided to stop by over the weekend. Wu Wei Tea Temple with zen and sufi like ambience is absolutely enchanting place - transported me back to the mountains. I went with their recommendations and ordered The Magician, The Pink Heart Beet elixirs as well as the Golden Chocolate drink. All the drinks were sooooo good. I was horrified and still reeling from my encounter at this establishment. I am young but disabled with an eventually terminal illness. I have a dog that my doctor wrote a letter for and then was trained to go in public with me everywhere. When I approached the door a very curt older women said " No animals in here ever!" Making a shooing motion at me. I calmly tried to explain I may not look it but am in deed disabled and need him. She said " no excuses no animals in here ever." I started to educate her on the law as I was leaving and she raised her voice and demanded " I wasn't getting my way and had the audacity to question my disability. I know people don't love dogs especially big ones but I was more than willing to make concessions such as sitting in the back patio where no one is. I left humiliated by the scene and cried. Feeling helpless, hurt and attacked. Believing my need for a dog or not no one should be speaking to me like that and raising there voice. Very unfortunate situation. They need to brush up on the ADA laws. read more
