There have been times that I have taken my car in to them swearing that work needs to be done (used to work on my cars a lot when I was in my teens) and they would check it out and tell me,"Nope, everything looks good." About a year ago my alternator started to go so I took it in and had them replace it. Pick it up a day or two later and go on about my business. About a week later some warmer weather hit and I noticed the A/C wasn't working. Called Tim up, and he assured me that even though he was really busy he would get to it. Sure enough, he checked it out and the A/C not working was due to a connection on the new alternator. He fixed it, no charge. I also had a wheel bearing replaced there back when I first got my car. They replaced it and it started acting up again 15 months later. Even though I was three months out of their "shop warranty" they still fixed it, free of charge. I have more stories like that about these guys so I won't keep going on. I won't go to another mechanic for 50 miles.

It turned out that one coil had shorted causing electrical issues and eventually we also recognized low compression on one bank, and that led to a diagnosis of timing belt slippage, bent valves and a replacement engine. Raoul found a used engine (50k miles) to save me money and when he put that in it had similar problems to the original engine. Raoul pulled that engine and got another. I received the truck yesterday and I am impressed, the company was fair about the pricing, taking my concerns into account, didn't try to nickel and dime me, and warranted his work and parts for a year. More than I expected for a used engine. It was expensive, but not what I imagined as the various problems continued to cascade. I used to do most of my own work, but engines are more sophisticated now and you need a garage that does good work, doesn't rip you off, and is personable. You'll pay more, but it's not like that Georgetown station that's internationally known. Employees are friendly, and there's a store with the basics.

I was so happy when I found Merv's. I thought they did good work and were honest. I was wrong. I brought my car to Merv's for service. I provided my own materials. My bill should have been around $30-$40. I was shocked when I looked at my bill. It was more than double what it should have been. I asked why it was so much. Merv, who was sitting in the front office began to squirm and told me it was because a wheel balance and tire rotation was performed. I immediately asked if it had actually been performed. I did not request that to be done. Rather than correct the invoice, Merv asked me if I wanted a credit. Really? You overcharge a customer and then ask if they want a credit. I was told that I had already received a discount because I provided my own materials. So, to recap, buying my own parts and not allowing a shop to overcharge me for materials is considered a discount. That's interesting....what Merv calls a discount is called fraud under Virginia state law. Buyer beware. The attempted gouge was far more expensive to Merv than he imagined. You have been warned.

I emailed Lorton Auto and they said my brake pads were good when they did my saftey inspection in December. i should not need brakes. I brought my car in 8/3. Lorton Auto brought me out to my car and showed me my brakes pads. They showed me with the measuring tool. I had more pad in the back than the front but both were good. They did a 50 point inspection that contradicted multiple things i paid KIA to do on 7/18 that KiA did not do. This is a trust worthy shop. Again they showed me. My car was where I could see it. They explained in detail & showed me the reading & meter that my brake fluid had 4% moisture. I paid KIA $200 + on 7/18 to do my brake fluid change. Lorton Auto is place from now on. Here I know my car will get good honest care. Here they show me what my car needs and don't try to scam me to make money.
