Food and Drink: I went to Hotboys on January 5th for a fraternity event, and it was so good, I went back a second time the next day! On my first visit, I had the tender meal (Medium+ spice) with the fries. The tenders were seasoned well, spicy as expected, and were larger than what I remember. I was full after eating two of them. The fries were fresh and hot and were also seasoned well - pair them with ranch and *chef's kiss*. The next day, I had the same meal to-go, but had greens instead of fries. Hands down....the best greens I've had in Indianapolis. These are the greens you want at Thanksgiving! The spice level was great, it had flavor, and I finished my cup wanting more of it! A wonderful surprise for sure. Customer Service: Based on the fraternity event, customer service was pushed to the limit. The staff remained polite and stayed busy. Yes they are all about the chicken but when I discovered the Fridays only fish sandwich it quickly became my go to. I'm normally a French fry purest but their heavily seasoned crinkle fries are yummy. Always a festive spirit in the dining room while I wait for my food. I can't say enough good things about this place. The staff and owner are kind, fun, and very helpful. "Dog friendly" patio is an understatement. Bring your pup here for water bowls and tons of attention. The food is flavorful and the mac and cheese is darn near perfect - just cheesy enough but not drowning in sauce, full of flavor, and not too mushy. The bathroom design is intentionally loaded with graffiti. It's got a street vibe. The fried chicken and fries were great, and they give you a lot of fries. I heard that the chicken was spicy so I went with mild, which had some spice, but I could have gone up one more level. The staff was really nice and they did a good job keeping the place clean. One side of the restaurant has tables and chairs for families. The other side has a decent sized bar with about 7 beers on tap and a few big TV's for watching sports. Hotboys is super fun on Tuesday nights! It's Trivia Night and the kids eat free. We went with a group of friends and had a blast starting with trying almost everything on the menu, $4.50 well drinks and nightly beer specials. Aaron, the owner, came over to the table and told us how Hotboys originated with his brothers in California. He has an amazing story and we're glad he opened this restaurant in Carmel as we have become regulars. I tried the Guap fries which was a generous portion of Fries and chicken covered with a cheesy spicy sauce. There was so much food, that I took half of it home. Husband and I ordered two meals and there was a small mishap, however, the manager Jared was very helpful and caring of the incident and made it up to us by fixing the order and by giving us a couple of extra items to go with it. World Famous Hotboys specializes in hot chicken. If I'm you, I'd get something with chicken here, and you've got lots of options. There are chicken with waffles, sandwiches, wraps, chicken tenders, wings and even burritos. Spice level varies on all chicken. There's Southern, which is no spice at all. Then there's Training Wheels, Mild, Mild+, Medium, Medium+, Hot, and Hot-Hot!!! If you order your food online and you choose Hot-Hot!!!, they make you confirm and let you know that it will probably be "a two-day affair." I can't handle too much heat, so I got Training Wheels, and it was pleasant and just barely spicy. My husband got Mild+ and said that there is no way he would go a level higher than that -- Mild+ is pretty spicy! One of the sandwiches we got came with gravy, and it is probably some of the best gravy we've had at a restaurant, bar none. I believe they serve biscuits and gravy here, so we will have to come back to try those. They have a kids' menu here, and the chicken is not spicy on the kids items. I suppose you could ask for them to be spicy, though. What is a little spicy are the fries that come with the kids' meals. They have some sort of paprika on them, and my kids did not like that. They also have some sides and a few breakfast items on the menu. You can get your chicken with different levels of heat ranging from Mild to Hot Hot. I heard that Hot is very, very spicy. I ordered the chicken tender meal, with medium heat and a side of fries. My food was ready in about 5 minutes and it was fresh, hot and delicious. I visited this restaurant with my daughters for the Yelp review, but also purchased some meals for them. My oldest ordered a Sando sandwich, medium, with fries and my other daughter ordered the strips, Hot with Mac and Cheese. We noticed that any spice level above Medium is charged a surcharge depending on level of spicyness. With the hot chicken strips, it was a powdered seasoning that is sprinkled on the chicken that increases the spiciness which was different from "traditional" hot chicken. I didn't visit Oakland much back when I lived in the South Bay, but I had heard of Hotboys having some of the best fried chicken sandwiches around. When I saw that they opened a location in Carmel, I decided to try it out on a recent trip to the area. The restaurant has kind of that gritty Oakland vibe, with graffiti-like art plastered all over the walls and a dim interior. When you eat in, you can actually choose whether you would like full service (seated on the other side of the bar) or a more casual counter service experience. We chose the latter and ordered a couple of items: Dark Chicken Meal, Medium Plus ($14) - I normally try to get the Hot spice level from hot chicken places, but after reading the reviews here I decided to tone it down just a bit and I'm glad I did. Even at Medium Plus, the spice level is legit. It starts quite pleasantly sweet, but then morphs into a beast, lighting the mouth on fire with each passing second. It's more spicy than the hot level at other hot chicken places in my opinion. Now the comparison kind of ends there. Firstly, the heat is added by a mixture of dry rub and a generous addition of a dry spice mix rather than hot cayenne oil. The amount of breading lends a nice crunch, but I found it to be a bit excessive - it's actually a little difficult to reach the chicken and it insulates the chicken a bit too much, resulting in meat that isn't particularly tender and kind of gets stuck to the bone. The meat is quite moist and juicy but much more difficult to eat than normal fried chicken due to the texture and stick factor. The chicken is kept skin-on, but thanks again to the thick breading, the fat isn't rendered out all the well, resulting in a somewhat rubbery texture. Overall, the bone-in chicken is a bit weaker at Hotboys compared to some other places, but it still tastes good. The chicken comes with some tangy but soft, rather than crisp, pickles, and two small cups of house ranch to help mitigate some of the heat levels. It also comes with a side - I chose the greens, which consists of smoky, vinegary, tender collard greens with some pieces of smoked turkey. The broth is actually a bit spicy and you can feel it in your throat as you eat. (4/5) Sando Meal, Mild ($16): The chicken consists of a piece of skinless, deboned chicken thigh that has been breaded and fried. The breading is not as thick compared to their bone in chicken and is perfectly appropriate in my opinion. The chicken itself is tender, but not super moist or on the verge of falling apart. It's topped with coleslaw to help cut down on the heat, as well as pickles, all held together on a fluffy potato bun. For me, at least, the mild is basically not spicy at all - just a small tingle on the tongue so you know they added something, but not enough for any pain. For the side, we got mac and cheese, which was pretty disappointing. The elbows seem to be cooked thirty minutes past al dente, and then are dunked in a cloying cheese sauce that isn't particularly well seasoned. There are small bits of pimento pepper, but they only serve to be a points of visual interest as they do not contribute anything to the taste. On the flip side, the crinkle cut fries that other members of our party got were surprisingly delicious. I personally think that the crinkle cut is inferior as it's typically not cooked very well - either soft and floppy, yet oily at the same time, or fried until coal-like. These, on the other hand, are well crisped with fluffy interiors. They're great unseasoned or seasoned, and are not overly salty. Dipping them into the house ranch is the perfect complement. (4/5) Hotboys certainly serves some really tasty chicken. Next time I'm in the area, I will visit again. TL;DR. Great plain chicken tenders. Watch out for up charges on hot-hot, sauces and other items. I am not sure what this place is world famous for, maybe the atmosphere. We had a party 5 , seated in the bar with table service. If you don't, you will order when you walk in and food will be brought to you. The server in the bar was impersonal, curt, and rushed all while rocking a mean RBF. (Not a compliment.). The runner handed me the food to distribute for her. My wife and I both ate the Pollo Moco, listed under breakfast, served all day. This was very good. The tender, decently sized, complemented the dish. There was no spice added to the tender. The sage gravy was too thin and tasted light on sausage. I wanted their chicken and waffles but it's served with two wings. A tenders place should use tenders, ATOM. Someone in our group ordered a chicken sandwich hot-hot. He can handle a lot of heat and this didn't disappoint. It made his nose run and eyes water. It's legit! Equally legit was his surprise when he got his bill and was charged $4 extra for hot-hot. We could not find this stated on the menu. We were entertained by the line item on the bill describing the extra charge as a two-day event. Someone else ordered medium heat which was too hot for her. This is a poor excuse for a Dave's hot chicken wanna be. The way they season the chicken the amount of pickles, the way they place the bread under the chicken and even the loaded fries are identical. The taste is almost the exact same but it's just not as good as Dave's hot chicken. The cooks must have had an off day because I'm shocked at all of the amazing rankings. The tenders themselves are 10/10. The seasoning is an exact copy of Dave's Hot Chicken but the put so much seasoning it makes it hard to eat. The Mac fritters were way over seasoned and undercooked. They weren't crunchy at all but very soft. There was literally so much grease coming from the bag that I had to put a napkin under it and the grease bled through for napkins. The coleslaw was a 0/10. I took one bite and it had no seasoning. The donuts were 1/10 because they literally tasted like with you try to make donuts at home and either forget an ingredient or something that makes it taste off. I've been to the location in fountain square so I was stoked to see this location pop up closer to home. This location is huge and has plenty of seating inside, at the bar, and even looks like they'll have a good size patio. I got the chicken sandwich with medium spice. The spice here is unreal unlike any other spicy chicken sandwich. It was HOT but the addicting kind of hot where your mouth is on fire but you just can't stop. Good food, great atmosphere. I took my daughter (kids eat free all day Tuesday) for trivia night which was fun. The plain tenders and fries good, especially with the house sauce. I tried the mild which were a little spicy and I typically like spicy. I really liked the greens. For the kids I might recommend not having their spice/seasoning on the fries. read more

I've been wanting to try Hotboys, and I'm so happy they opened up one in Carmel! The restaurant is pretty much self-serve. We didn't know that no one would come to our table and that we had to order at the front. You also have to get utensils yourself clean up after you're done. The vibe of the restaurant was really cool and loved that they had a live DJ. The chicken is juicy, and I highly recommend getting the mild or mild+ flavor. I would totally get their ranch over the money sauce. The fried mac n cheese bites had a sweet taste to them that balanced out the cheesiness. The bonuts did not have enough sugar and were dry, but the texture was good and it tasted better with honey. It's a little expensive for fried chicken, but it's definitely worth a try.
