While there are many local options, I don't mind a smaller, lesser-known chain with quality products. Woops ships most of its goodies from New York and maintains just two locations in Arizona. Their flagship items are macarons, but there are plenty of options for a real breakfast. What I love: You wouldn't upset me if you declared these to be the best macarons in town. I don't know if I'd quite agree with that, but you'd have an argument. I am in love with the croissants--so flaky you must consciously avoid making a mess. The chocolate is my favorite, but I sometimes go with the much heftier almond variety. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'm usually taking mine to-go, but I do enjoy the warm decor inside and the patio seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What I like: The occasional savory item like the leek and potato pastry is a tasty change of pace. They make breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well. They're open during pretty generous hours, so I've found myself popping in for a snack as late as 8pm. What needs work: The coffee isn't bad, but it might be the least impressive in the neighborhood, both in terms of flavor and selection. No standout lattes and relatively weak iced coffee, but still OK when the sweet treats are the star of the show. I don't think you could go wrong with a plain cold brew on these hot summer days. This was the coffee shop nearest to my hotel so I had to give them a try. I saw that lots of people recommended their chocolate almond croissant so I had to try one. The first day I went in they had already sold out of them, so I got a chocolate croissant. It was still a good pick as it was delicious. I returned the next day and the owner told me she was still baking them and to come back in 30 minutes. I'm disappointed writing this because our first visit earlier that morning was great; friendly service, good sandwiches, and excellent coffee. However, when we returned later that day (April 15 around 3:00 PM) for dessert, the experience was completely different. The employee at the register (blonde, wearing a blue sweater) was noticeably rude. We waited in line as she approached every customer ahead of us to take their order. When it was our turn, she did not acknowledge us and instead continued preparing boxes (something that could have been done after assisting waiting customers). After about 5 minutes, we asked if we could order, and she responded with an annoyed look, telling us we could come up to the register "if we wanted to order." For context, every customer she assisted before us was white, and we were the only people of color in the store. While I don't want to make assumptions, the difference in treatment was difficult to ignore. It's unfortunate because we genuinely enjoyed our first visit, but this experience changed our perception. Three out of four of us liked the macarons, hence the 4/5 stars. Our daughter is a macaron "snob" and she must have them everywhere we go. We actually went 20 minutes out of our way to hit this spot up! Parking is also a wee bit challenging (as with any college-area business) so just save yourself any anxiety and use the garage so you can enjoy wandering and eating/shopping at all the spots on the street. Everyone loves their macarons, their vibrant colors and macarons' vibrant and so pretty, for me they are hit and miss as they can be a little too sweet. However their hidden gems are their pastries, their danish are hands down one of the best in town. If you stop by and are lucky enough to find a blueberry one ask for it warmed up, you won't regret it. Personally what stops me from the full 5 is the coffee, as it can be a little hit or miss for me since it can be on the stronger side. I dropped in here last night with two friends after dinner at a nearby restaurant. I got an eclair ($4.95). They offered us free samples of their macarons, so I also had a honey lavender macaron. The eclair was better (but smaller) than the ones they sell at Safeway for about the same price. The macaron was lovely though a little too sweet for my taste. Service was friendly. However, I felt extremely uncomfortable because as I was waiting in line, I noticed the manager ( I assume) was yelling at some of her employees and that is never acceptable. The staff are all lovely- especially Sophia- she always makes us feel special, remembering us visit to visit even when its been a few months. Such a cute cafe setting. Acknowledged right when I walked in and they brought the food right to where I was sitting. A box of twelve macaroons will set you back around $24. This is a whole box. The macaroons are sold individually, but everything is cheaper by the dozen. My drinks of choice are the cafe au lait and the matcha latte. Both are delicious with no added sweetener than what nature gives us . Their espressos shots are that smooth. The matcha latte has no after taste nor bitterness. In fact, they ask every time if you want sweetener in your matcha or coffee beverage. Prior to COVID, I cannot report how the business was handled. After COVID, the store is always clean, friendly, and merry. The lobby of this little cafe holds around two to three tables inside and a few outside seating areas. They are always clean and sanitized. The staff makes it their mission to immediately greet every guest with a genuine smile and warmth.
