We were party of seven last night for a birthday celebration. Dinner reservation at 5:30pm. My friend is a regular here coming with various members of her family. We sat at a round table with a huge lazy Susan. Last night's menu was preordered by her. Menu items: * tureen of watercress soup - chicken broth and dried duck gizzards based. So good. * prawns with honey glazed walnuts- the prawns were good size. * Peking duck - great crispy skin. Duck very meaty. * stir fried lamb with xo sauce. Thinly sliced with a slight kick. * beef steak with asparagus- stir fried beef very tender * clams with vermicelli in shell * black mushrooms with Chinese mustard greens. * lotus roots with mixed veggies * stuffed sticky rice chicken- with salted egg yolks. I took a thick middle piece. Was tepid. Took another piece later which was warm. Massive * fried chicken wings. Hot and crispy skin. Ended the meal with taro tapioca pudding and sliced fresh sweet oranges. The restaurant filled up as the evening progressed. Busy for a Monday night. The waitstaff speaks Toisanese dialect. We felt at home. There are two entrances- street level on Monterey Blvd which is the deli. The other is on Gennessee St. It leads you upstairs to the second floor dining room. There's a third floor with a private dining room holding four tables according to my friend. Chinese dinner done right! Food tastes authentic and they have that "wok hei". We ordered a bunch of dishes for Lunar New Year and they were mostly all hits. Duck with the soft bao, stir fry pork intestines, yang chow fried rice, green beans, tofu with mixed meats on top, shredded chicken, lamb bowl, special sauce fried pork, and many many more. I can't remember the specific names of these but that's more or less what they are! We also special ordered this deep fried chicken with stuffed sticky rice. This was a wild dish, only place that I've seen it. Seems like it requires insane technique to make. It's basically an entire chicken with just the skin and they stuff the entire thing with sticky rice and deep fry it. It's definitely something to try. As for flavor itself it was just OK, nothing too special. Their service is excellent as well. The two female staff was very kind to our party and really quick with fulfilling requests such as bringing us water and helping us wrap up the food for leftovers. At the end of the meal, like most Chinese meals, they bring out red bean soup for dessert. My absolute favorite! It's like and refreshing and sweet and hits the spot after a hearty meal. I recently gave Won Kok Restaurant on Monterey Blvd a visit and haven't been back for years. I still had a solid overall experience with a few caveats. We ordered the soy sauce chicken, beef brisket in soup with turnip, sauteed clams in black bean sauce, and yam leaves. The food was good across the board and definitely had that wok hay flavor especially the clams in black bean sauce. The brisket was tender and comforting in the broth, and the soy sauce chicken was flavorful without being overly salty. Their seafood selection looked extensive with plenty of fresh seafood in stock, and the table next to us went all out with an Alaskan King Crab that looked impressive coming out of the kitchen cooked 3 ways. Definitely tempting and the entire restaurant looking at the commotion of another table's celebration. Pricing falls somewhere in the middle, not the cheapest Cantonese spot in the city, nor the most expensive either. Portions felt a bit small for the price point, so you may want to order an extra dish if you're dining with a group. I've heard the owner/chef was formerly from R&G Lounge, though that's a claim a lot of SF restaurants make and it's never been verified. I'll need to come back and try their salt and pepper crab to see how it stacks up. The restaurant dining room a converted San Francisco home and there is another room upstairs. It's had a few past lives historically as Emmy's, Lucky River, and Ming Garden. There's a flight of stairs to get up to the dining room and there's no elevator or lift, so keep accessibility in mind. As for parking, there's plenty of free street parking across the restaurant and in the residential area behind the restaurant. If you're doing takeout or just want BBQ, you can order downstairs at the front entrance, which makes it convenient if you're not dining in. Overall good wok hay, solid seafood selection, midrange tier restaurant, and a quiet neighborhood setting. I'd come back to explore more of the menu in the future. read more

Unfortunately where I currently live there isn't any Chinese restaurant that serves nearly as good food as my basic to go Chinese places in the city. Whenever I roll through the Ingleside area I try to get my 'to go' fix from Won Kok. I literally crave their Peking Pork Chops. Why? They are super tender and the sauce it's cooked in isn't icky sweet and has the perfect savory/sweet/sour balance that I like for my taste. I also love their Braised Pork Belly with preserved vegetables. Super tender and so good. My cousins are in town and they got invited to this local place, the food was quite delicious, especially the soup and sticky rice chicken. The sticky rice has comes with tons of ingredients chopped up and then added to the whole chicken skin, deep fried to a crisp. Lots of people said parking is an issue but if you don't mind walking a couple of blocks, you'll be totally fine. This is the kind of Chinese restaurant I grew up eating at. We ordered: Seafood Panfried Noodles $18.95 -standard, not very flavorful Spiced salt pepper spare ribs $17.95 -probably the best dish Sautéed oyster ginger scallion $20.95 -7 large oysters with tofu Pumpkin with salted egg yolk $16.95 -good but not as flavorful Hometown style goose $33 -each piece was pretty tough to chew, definitely not worth the price Service was fine. We dined on Saturday between 1-2pm. Restaurant has takeout on the bottom level and the dining space is upstairs. They have fairly large tables stuffed into a rectangular basic Chinese restaurant. I came here a couple times for dinner which is a bit cramped but they were able to fit 15 people on the third floor on a big round table. I like to come here for the HK chow mein and chow fun. Sunday at dinnertime, there were multiple multigenerational family dinners and birthday parties in the second floor dining room and in the private party room upstairs on the third floor. I think we were the only ones there who didn't speak Mandarin or Cantonese. My parents are obsessed with this restaurant, deeming it their favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. I've admittedly never visited Won Kok even though I live walking distance purely because of the mediocre ratings, but it's actually frequently packed with a loyal Chinese customer base (who probably don't write reviews). I'd probably rate Won Kok a 4.5 for food, which I'll round up since other ratings are low. My parents have brought back leftovers from their visits, which have been yummy, but I loved my first visit there over the holidays. The place was packed with families sitting at round 10-person banquet tables, crabs and fish swimming in seafood tanks in the background, and staff bustling around before gathering for their late night meal themselves. The atmosphere was very 热闹 (lively and bustling with noise). In terms of food, our family's favorite is definitely the #44 BBQ duck (not the same as Peking duck--haven't tried that here yet). It's super flavorful, tender, and juicy, and you can get it as an a la carte dish for dinner or with rice for a lunch special. Second favorite is the #4 Beef brisket soup with turnip, which I love because it's on the healthier side and the broth is super tasty. I wasn't as excited about the hot chili crab, but I just find getting crab meat out too tiring; if the meat was already loose and the seasoning was directly on the crab meat instead of the breaded and fried shells, it would have been perfect.
