We have been going to Wolfe's Tavern since the late eighties and have seen it through it's many incantations. This one is horrible. The last 2 Fridays we have been there the food has taken over an hour to be delivered (although the restaurant was not overly busy). Last Friday the well-done burger I ordered finally arrived almost raw and the baked haddock my partner ordered was a mushy mess of fish, undercooked potatoes and veggies. This past Friday I ordered the chicken and waffles, which is advertised as a pumpkin waffle, Irish stout gravy, cranberry relish, autumn vegetables, crispy fried Statler chicken breast. What I received was a well-done flavorless chicken breast (no crispy fried to be found), and a spoonful of what was apparently the gravy and cranberry relish on top of plate sized waffle. On top of that the manager insisted (with this look of glee on her face) that we had only ordered 30 minutes before as opposed to the hour we had actually been waiting (and which the waitresses had been apologizing for all that time). Will be while before I go back. Too bad. Will wait for the next management/dining team to be hired. read more

Went to Wolfe`s Tavern for dinner last night. My wife and I had the prime rib, which was ok. I also had the french onion soup, which was not bad as well. Given it's location on the lake, we were disappointed when we arrived to find the dining area was a large room without any windows at all. The waitress was very good, and did a nice job. We will go back again, when we are just looking for a quick meal. Still looking for a nice place on the lake to eat. read more

They have two bars, one in the midst of the Restaurant, and one sort of off the the side. Both have a nice atmosphere and service is friendly. They have a mammoth selection of beers and a frequent drinker card as it were, where if you manage to get through the hundreds of drinks they serve they give you a cup and a discount on subsequent purchases. One thing that's tough retiring in a tourist destination is finding an affordable place to eat out. This place is not one of them. Most of the dinners on the menu are expensive. They also charge $4 extra for the small salad bar that has only a few items in it. After trying to find something to order under $20 we settled on mushroom raviolis for my wife which she didn't like at all saying the sauce was too sweet. I had meatloaf which was very good. The waitress asked if we would like some bread and that was great with a lovely touch of tasty dipping oil and butter, thing is the basket had only two small pieces of bread covered by a huge white napkin? Not enough to use up the oil. We are local and doubt if we can afford to come back, too bad. Fabulous food, abysmal service. Every time we've gone, a brunette female manager acts looks down her nose at us and acts put out to find us a table in their (most often) nearly empty restaurant. The last time we visited, we were at a table literally ten feet from the door and after waiting nearly ten minutes for the waitress to stop by, we finally stopped said brunette manager and as soon as we did, she said, "Has no one been here yet?" as though she already knew what we were about to say. The time before that, we walked out after waiting 15 minutes. Why do we go back, you ask? The food is phenomenal. They need to get the front of the house sorted out, and then all will be well. read more

I made a yelp account just to write this review; I have never felt the need to write a review before this. However, my experience at the Wolfe's Tavern was unacceptable. As someone who frequently eats out, I have never had a worse experience at a restaurant ever in my life. We arrived at the Wolfe's Tavern at 6:30pm. Granted, this is a busy time, however, there were numerous empty tables in many parts of the restaurant. There was no host or hostess at the front, and we waited around 10 minutes to give our name. After that, it was around 20 minutes until we were seated. We were seated at a table that was so tight, our knees touched, which was not ideal for my 90 year old grandfather who was with me. Once we were seated, we were immediately brought water and then ignored for another 25 minutes. In fact, we did not even get a waitress to come to our table until I asked a waitress who was walking by. She was apologetic, which was probably the only apology we received that night. Our real waitress came to our table, and we placed our orders. My grandfather ordered a Michelob on tap, which she said they did not have. She said there was only Bud and Bud Lite on Tap (this turned out to be false; they have 50 beers on tap). She also asked us if we want bread before our meal. We told her we did, and she left. She came back with our drinks; but we did not get our bread until we asked her while she was passing about 10 minutes after that. Our food came shortly after that. I had ordered the Mushroom Linguini, and what I received was plain pasta. I asked if that was correct, and the waitress said it wasn't and brought it back to the kitchen. When she brought it out again, it was correct, and she told us she would take it off the bill. However, when she brought the bill, it was not comped. I asked to speak to the manager, who made excuses, and said that to be fair, it was a busy night for them. The head chef did, however, come out and apologize for the mix up on the meal. Overall, the food was ok, but the service was stressful and horrible. I would not go again, nor would I recommend it to anyone that like good service and normal restaurant etiquette. Tick tock tick tock. What a disappointment. We used to come here every year and will not be back. While the service was friendly and apologetic for the wait, do you really need to wait 16 minutes before ordering drinks and appetizers, an additional 22 minutes to receive them and an additional 49 minutes to receive the entrees that were ordered at the same time as the appetizers? On a Tuesday! We arrived at 6:45pm with reservations, and the food has just arrived at 8:08pm. If time, price, and food quality are a priority go to Nolan's, Garwoods or Wolfetrap. read more

I've been here twice now, with very different experiences. The first time, I couldn't get over how gorgeous the place was. Very cozy with a solid "New Hampshire" feel to it. I was with a large group of family following my father's burial. The staff was very accommodating to us, generous, sympathetic without overstepping boundaries, and the food was great. A lot of us split things - I remember loving the nachos ($8.95, complete with pico de gallo, jalapeños and olives), the Tavern salad ($10.95 with roasted fresh pineapple, grilled tomato, bacon and goat cheese - REALLY good), and the house made veggie burger (I'm picky about these - it was so great, and we loved the "create-your-own" option). The cocktails were great as well. Fast-forward to 8 months later, I'm (unfortunately) gluten-free now. Not out of fad, but because I am intolerant and get very sick (ranging from discomfort to VERY VERY VERY sick), so I have to be careful. I have also been a vegetarian my whole life, so I think it's good to note here that consuming meat would probably not sit well with my digestive system - not to mention completely gross me out. You'll need this information later. One of my daughters and I were excited to stop by again recently after a visit to my dad (we live in Manchester). It was the tail-end of lunch time, and the place was pretty quiet. It took awhile for a server to come to us, but when she did, she was super friendly and sweet. I appreciated the symbols on menu items that could accommodate a gluten-free diet. I noticed there wasn't one on the nachos, asked her about it and she said she wasn't sure why. It took a little convincing to get her to check with the kitchen if they were or weren't, but she did, and returned to let me know that they WERE gluten-free (I'll throw that in the tips for all my Celiac homies, as I didn't get sick after). The portion was huge (I'm talking H-U-G-E and intimidating), and while the flavor was good, only the top layer of the pile had some cheese on them, so once that was gone they were just kind of... chips with jalapeños. I mean, that's good, too, but. Moving on. For lunch, my daughter ordered the macaroni and cheese (surprise, surprise) and I ordered the Tavern salad again, requesting no bacon. No problem, she took our menus and we kept digging into the nacho mountain. When our server returned with our entrees, my salad clearly had bacon throughout it. I pointed it out, and explained that I can't have bacon. She apologized and said she'd have a new one right out to me. I asked if it could just be in a to go box, since I was getting pretty full from the appetizer. She returned with the box, I thanked her and chatted with my daughter while she finished her lunch. Out of curiosity, I opened the box. My still-dressed salad (I don't think normal for a fresh to-go salad) was in there, FULL of pieces of bacon. Clearly, someone in the kitchen attempted to pick out the bacon and return it to me in a box, hoping I wouldn't notice. I kept peeking around, but couldn't find my server for awhile (she probably didn't think we needed her, so she's forgiven on that one). While waiting for her to return, I picked out about 30 gazillion pieces of bacon. Literally. I took a picture because I was so offended, but I won't attach it since I'm sure you get it. When I pointed it out to her, she responded with "I'll have a new one made for you." Ohhhhhh no thanks, we've already tried that before. I'm not trusting whatever's going on back there. This may seem like not such a big deal, but check this out: 1. It was made known that I CAN'T have bacon, not just that I don't care for it, and that fact was completely disregarded, which is totally offensive and unacceptable and made me worry about the gluten-free thing for the rest of the day. They don't know why I can't have a certain ingredient, and they don't have to - they were told I CAN'T. 2. Had I not noticed, I would have paid for the salad and gotten back to Manchester (give or take an hour and a half drive) before discovering a salad only destined for the trash. 3. NO manager came to the table to apologize. Even the server, when dropping the check, kind of said "I took that off the bill for you." after my request for her to do so, as if she was doing me a favor. Maybe I was expecting a manager because I was so offended about someone trying to be lazy and give me back a salad they knew I couldn't eat rather than make me a fresh one? Okay, that's enough about bacon. I won't return, but if you don't have dietary needs, I WILL say that the food was great during that first visit, even the bathroom is gorgeous, and the location is cute and scenic. read more

I've eaten at Wolfe's a few times now and the food is very good. The service is top notch and they are really focused on the customers. It's Sunday and the Patriots are playing but I wanted to watch my team from out of state. Most places look at you like you're crazy for asking them to turn an extra TV onto another team but the staff was awesome and made it happen right away. I'll be back here anytime I'm in the area and I'd recommend it to everyone. read more

Chewy, burnt chicken, bland food and nothing gave me the impression of being fresh or local (unless they put stuff in cans somewhere locally.) Been here once for a brunch with a big family. It was good. Not great. There could have been a way better selection. However I enjoyed the environment. Came back the same week for drinks at night with my boyfriend. I mean what is there to say they have every beer you could want. The martini menu is incredible, and the drinks are delicious! The set back? $12 martinis. Not really the price I want to pay in NH, I pay $10 for a martini in NYC. However it was a fun night, the bar was lively, and I would go back on a special occasion when I know I am going to spend some money. read more

We made reservations for their Thanksgiving buffet. It was a HUGE mistake! The food was luke warm at best & nothing was actually edible. It was supposed to have lobster in one dish but they must have been pureed because all I saw was mush. They had cheap nasty hake & fried eggplant that had a ton of wet vegetables on top.They had a variety of breads which might have been good 5 hours ago when they were first set out.But the piece of cranberry bread I got could have been used as a fire place brick. Now let's move onto the staff. RUDE INATTENTIVE & UNCARING is the best description I have for that lot. It began with the hostess who when we were called up to be lead to our table stood there ignoring us as she ease dropped on a conversation between the man at the podium & another customer and it got worse from there.Our waitress spent the entire meal hiding from her customers. She never offered us drinks after the first glass of water which actually came in the middle of our meal. She could have cared less when I told her the food was bad.. in fact she acted like I was interrupting her from getting back to her "extended break" she never even made eye contact with me or my husband. I spoke with two managers while I was there, I pointed out the DIRTY gritty nasty dishes they had set out & the fact that they were serving soup but there were NO SPOONS to be found anywhere. One of them "Veedock" I think is how it's spelled tried to tell me the spoons were on the table all the while continuing to walk & basically ignoring me. Um.. no.. if they were on the table I won't be walking around trying to hunt one down now would I ? After complaining they did bring me a piece of salmon that i couldn't choke down because it was fried in a vat of grease . It was literally pooling on the plate & t made my stomach turn. Not sure why this place is getting mediocre reviews I loved it! My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights with the bed and breakfast package. Every meal I had was delicious and plentiful. The drinks were good too! My advice is try it for yourself. read more

Food was okay but burgers were better last year. The Winnie burger said it came with roasted tomato but it was a cold slice of under ripe tomato. The shoestring French fries were very greasy. I preferred the fries the restaurant served in the past. I asked for vegan impossible burger. The chef said he couldn't toast the bread because they use butter and other non vegetarian things were cooked on the grill. Well the veggie burger was cooked on that grill so not sure why I had to have cold unappetizing bread. Beware the dressing on the house salad is like eating a full bulb of garlic I suggest asking for a different dressing. The waitress was great and so was the service. My wife and I went for dinner on a Saturday evening. She ordered the prime rib special and I got the short rib Shepard's pie. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and my all of my wife's food was hot and tasty, but the 'puck' of mashed potatoes on my Shepard's pie was cold and the meat itself was very dry and lacked taste. I mentioned this to my waitress who offered to reheat the potato puck or get me something else off the menu, but I just asked her to pass my comments off to the kitchen. I don't get what happened to this place. It used to be a big part of the towofn Wolfeboro, we frequented it year round for almost 20 years through multiple management changes and staff turnover and always felt the charm and enjoyed coming for a drink at the bar or a full meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). Very recently it has gone WAY downhill in a strange way, almost like they just don't want the business. The menu is now super limited, with the long time classics gone. They stopped offering breakfast - not only a strange move for a hotel who has guests wanting a morning meal, but they had been a favorite of many local regulars for breakfast. Service is SO slow, seems under staffed. Now this weekend takes the cake...it is July 4th weekend, traditionally insanely busy for the Tavern with big crowds standing around the bar. But they decided to stain the bar this week so most of the bar is blocked off....and today July 3 (early evening) they are turning people away unless they have reserved a table...they aren't allowing people to stand in the bar area (even at the large long first come / first serve high top) for a drink. I grew up in the area, so I've been frequenting Wolfe's Tavern for nearly 2 decades. I heard last year it was under new management, and since then I have attended about 5 brunches. That first trip last year was interesting. The prime rib was very good, especially when you consider the price. In fact, the whole line up of food was excellent. The service was terrible. At one point, my friend got irritated at seeing his bloody marry sitting at the pickup area for 5 minutes, so he simply got up and got it. This led to our waitress getting angry. When the process repeated itself, we were able to get a manager & have our irritable, rude waitress replaced. The replacement was excellent. The next several times we went were without incident, & the speed at which drinks were delivered out to the outside deck was notable. I can not say enough about the prime rib, & the eggs Benny is really good too. The guy that runs the cutting & omlett station is quick, professional & even a bit funny. The last time I went was a month ago, & began with the disappointment of over-cooked pork loin instead of prime rib, & ended with me & 9 of my friends getting tossed from the bar after our meal by an irritable waitress (not sure if it was the same one from a year before). We may have been a bit loud, but we weren't inebriated, the bartender didn't seem to notice us but one of the waitresses did, & I guess we got her panties in a knot. A warning probably would have sufficed. I'm not certain I'm going to return. All that good food isn't worth the headache brought about by a small snippet of the staff. read more

Food, service, and drinks are all excellent here. We came in multiple times over our stay of 4 days. The story behind the mugs hanging from the ceiling is a fun old tradition, and worth asking about. Live music a few nights a week, and it ends up being kind of a sing-along piano bar kind of thing, which is great fun. read more

Came here to see James Montgomery play in the backyard so I stopped into the tavern to have something to eat. It was a Sunday and they had a breakfast brunch with prime rib. Holiday weekend and the staff was not prepared whatsoever. Party of 3 adults, 3 kids (1 in a highchair) at 1:30pm. The place was busy, but seemed manageable (I used to serve and am very perceptive of these things). We had to wait 15 mins for a table to be cleared - plenty of empty tables available.. sat next to the kitchen door which is fine, but server after server walked past us without even acknowledging us. I finally flagged someone down and she didn't think we were hers. The manager(?) then came over and took our drink order but wouldn't take our food order.. 3 kids, no kids menus.. had to wait longer for those. Bar drinks were put out by bartender and sat there. I asked our server if I could get them and she said to go ahead :-0 again, I'm friendly having been there, done that in the business... food came out and thankfully, was amazing!!! However, no napkins or silverware on the table.. we asked and the manager(?) literally dropped them on the center of the table.. the napkins as large as sheets and just dropped, unwrapped on the table.
