I'll preface this by saying the staff, the vibes, and the views are magnificent. But the price, and quality of food (at least what I ordered) are the equivalent to cheap frozen leftovers that a college student forgot about in the back of their freezer. I ordered the roasted Squash. $25 It was supposed to come with: squash, rice, kale, and pepita mole (sounds good, right?) I received an unseasoned plate of squash and rice, that had a pool of water around it that looked and tasted like it had just been microwaved from a frozen-cube-state. $25? There wasn't even Kale or pepita mole. I was so in shock I had to ask for the menu again, wanting to check if I had misread the description. They couldn't find their lunch menu when I asked They had switched to the bar menu, where the same burger my fiancée ordered was $6 cheaper (we saw a burger being taken out as we were leaving, it was the identical burger) The waitress was incredibly understanding and took the dish back, and took it off our check. We keep trying to give this venue chances after the new owners took over, but I believe this is our last chance. To start off - the menu, we arrived just before 2pm The menu handed to us was miniscule - 5 items. Burger $25, soup $18, veggie dish $25, caeser salad ~$18 and something else that was of no interest and expensive. We asked the server why such a weird small menu, and it was explained that they were trying to keep their supplies low. Fair enough. Our food arrived at 2:30. The soup was OK, not worth $18. My son had the veggie meal. It was a squash dish with pilaf and a mole sauce. The squash was obviously microwaved, very unseasoned, and missing the sauce. It was terrible, inedible - Yes, I had a bite. My son went to look at the menu to make sure the sauce was actually missing and it was noticed by him that the menus we ordered from had disappeared. We also noticed everyone in the restauraunt was getting totally different meals that were not on the menu we ordered from. We again queried our server.......then were told, there is a different menu stating at 2. The server brought that menu over, and it had better items, including the same cheeseburger for $6 less. It was also confirmed with our server that the sauce was missing. My son sent his meal away, and basically did not eat lunch that day. Why didn't the server explain to us our options when we inquired, i.e., a new menu at 2pm? Why can't this establishment cook better food for the price??? It's not difficult to cook a good seasoned meal. Truly a huge disappointment. I don't think we will try again. We will eat in Winthrop or Twisp where it's cheaper and better. read more

I truly do not understand the modest 3.5 stars on Yelp. Everything we had was excellent. They were short staffed and extremely busy when we went (Friday night July 4th weekend), but everything still came out quickly and the staff was super friendly and courteous despite being understandably frazzled. As to the food: the Mountain Mac is outstanding. All three of us at the table agreed that if it's not the best mac and cheese we've ever had, it's at least top 5. The steak burger was a real steak burger, fat dripping out the bottom, cooked perfectly medium rare as requested, well-seasoned, on a delicious buttery brioche. The chicken sandwich was also phenomenal, especially since it was not dry. Moist and tender when some grilled chicken can be dry and chewy. The truffle fries it came with were also great. Not overpowering truffle flavor. The caesar salad also had authentic, house made ceasar dressing (like you can see the anchovies). Same with the chicken on this. Moist and tender and flavorful. The seasonal margarita, strawberry rhubarb, was also outstanding. A family member described it as "the bomb.com." Special shout-out to the hostess, Macy, who was seating people AND bussing tables in two different restaurants at once, and our server, Ashley, who was handling birthday parties, outdoor dining, etc. all by herself, and took the time to give honest answers about menu items. That's likely why everything we ordered was great. Again, they were both EXTREMELY busy, and were perfectly polite, attentive, and friendly. Again, I don't understand the negative reviews. Maybe an off night, or maybe we had an unusually excellent night. This is our first and likely only time here since we're just at Cascades for vacation. But if I had the choice, I'd be back. And we might squeeze in another tomorrow night if we can swing it after the hikes. Finally, yes: it's pricey. But this is a swanky hotel, not sure what people were expecting. The views are absolutely stunning, particularly at sunset. In my opinion, yes: the price is absolutely worth it. And again, we'll be back if we can manage it!! read more

The service is so slow it doesn't even matter how it tastes. Went twice during our stay and I just can't believe this is literally the only food option at the resort. Takes 20 minutes for someone to even talk to you, another 20 minutes for drinks, and an hour or more to get your food. Even for kids food they don't get their food for literally an hour. We've been to the Wolf Creek Bar & Grill in the Sun Mountain Lodge a few times; twice this year. Every time we've been there, the service has been excellent, especially the last two times, when we had Payton as our server. He is truly an asset to the Sun Mountain Lodge! The food is almost as good as the service. Yeah, people have written that it's a little pricey. Maybe. I mean, maybe the entrees are $1-$3 more than somewhere else. But you're not really going there for discount dining - you're going there for the amazing view. Plus, where else are you going to eat in Winthrop?!? Honestly, a burger at Sun Mountain Lodge is $17; one at the Old Schoolhouse Brewery is $13 or $14. That's not much of a premium. Anyway, our food was great, as usual. My wife had an excellent Twin Lakes (French) Dip ($17) and I enjoyed the Crab Louie bowl ($20). No complaints! Again, Payton was an excellent server. He recommended a great 'warmer' drink and the cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was awesome, and I have to write that the warmer I had - the Monte Cristo with Baileys, Kahlua, Grand Marnier, coffee and whipped cream - was probably one of the best warm, alcoholic beverages I've ever had. View is spectacular. Food is good. But $18 for a 6" pepperoni pizza, that looked like it came from a box in the freezer, is shameful.

One of the most epic views of the Methow Valley, only to be RUINED by the crappiest music I've ever heard in my life. Now, I love most genres of music. But whatever that garbage that was playing was awful! Loud, obnoxiously loud and ruining the mood to the point that we couldn't stand to stay a minute longer. We'd asked the waitress to turn it down, and as we were leaving she said she was just going to turn it down, but it was far too late. There should NEVER be that type of music being played in a setting like this. It kills the natural ambiance and beauty of the setting when I can't even hear myself think. Sadly disappointed. The new ownership of this place seem to be letting the place go To crap. We were here in 2021 and had a delightful experience with many vegetarian and gluten free options. This time, there wasn't even the opportunity to enjoy the experience. We won't be back to the restaurant bar and grill again. I will say, that the evening before we'd had a wonderful meal with great service - aside from a no-brainer mistake by the kitchen staff. When a customer asks for gluten free crackers, and then they serve the Brie cheese covered in some sort of phyllo dough - it makes you wonder who's running things in the back of the house. One would thing that the requested "gluten free crackers" would have been the red flag that you need to ask a few more questions and sort out the order before you inadvertently send someone to the hospital for an allergic reaction. read more

First time to Sun Mountain Lodge and we tried the dining room but it was filled at 5pm opening by reservations. If you want a great view with dinner reserve your seat. If not you can dine in the bar and grill. Food is the same in either side. Susan the server was great. She was on the spot with everything and had a great personality. The food was fantastic. There were only two other tables at the time I was there and took over 30 mins to get my order, and after looking around for the server while watching two others servers talking and looking at me, I finally got up and had to ask for my check. We stayed at the lodge five nights and ate here multiple times. The menu has been updated a bit from last year, and for the better. Over the course of several days we enjoyed the chicken pot pie soup (a special soup of the day that should be added to their regular menu), the French onion soup and the coconut curry soup. All highly recommended. The sausage sauce with penne pasta was my favorite dish on the menu - they have three different sauces to choose from that you can pair with three different types of noodles. The beef stew was also really good, and get you "fried fill" on with onion rings and crispy French fries. They make all of their salad dressings in house, which impressed me, and they source as much as possible from local farms. Why 3 stars? The service, while really friendly, is just not on top of things - however, we were on resort time so it was all good. Very clean, fun atmosphere, cozy fireside and a full bar with ample choices of adult beverages. read more

This was...decent enough...if you sit nowhere near a speaker and only go once. Hubs and I had dinner here last night. Beautiful view! Our server was wonderful and thoughtful. It was nice and quiet. The smoked carrots appetizer was FANTASTIC! Highly recommend that. Hubs got some kind of breaded fried pickles with ranch dressing. They were gluten free which was nice. I had a few bites and those first few bites were nice but then it felt like the flavors were sort of monochromatic or something and I was bored and over it very quickly. We ordered the baked Brie with gluten free crackers. It came out surrounded in a puff pastry. If we are ordering gluten free crackers you'd think that would clue in the chef to make sure it was gluten free or at least ask questions. So, we had to wait for it to be made again gluten free. My other complaint is that the online menu lists things as being gluten free and then the restaurant menu doesn't say that exact same dish is gluten free. Why the discrepancy? Anyway, hubs and I came for lunch today. We sat by the windows and were about to enjoy a meal and the gorgeous view but sadly, THE MOST OBNOXIOUS loud music was raging out of the speaker above us. I don't want to listen to obnoxious music at any volume and it entirely ruined the ambiance. We are feeling all serene in this lovely place and seriously THAT is what you think people want to hear?! We walked out. I feel like I just walked out of a trashy Denny's. There are some areas they can and should do MUCH better....fix the music choice and turn it down. Educate your chef to clue in to gluten free requests. Make sure the menu you show online matches the menu in the restaurant with notations for gluten free etc. Please expand the options available to people who are gluten free AND vegetarian. Most of the restaurants in town are closed Monday and Tuesday leaving us very little choice but to dine on site but how many times can I order the same few dishes over and over without being sick of it...especially at these prices. we've been coming here for many years and have always enjoyed it, but our most recent visit was the worst meal and service we've had there in two decades. The bar and grill was packed, which was fine, but service was incredibly slow, taking up to 30 minutes between courses. My entree (steak and fries) was completely cold when it arrived, although my tablemates food was hot. What was worse was that the servers and bussers were working at completely cross purposes. The bussers kept removing things from the table between courses that we still needed (like taking away the water carafe and all of our drinking glasses while we were waiting for dessert) and leaving us needing things like forks to eat the entrees, with nothing to drink with a rich dessert, etc. it seemed like the staff was not at all in sync. read more

This unassuming bar and restaurant at Sun Mountain Lodge DID NOT dissapoint. After a 5 hour car ride through a snow filled pass, we were starving, cold and in need of a good pick me up. Chris at the bar was absolutely delightful and the food was delicious! I normally would not rave about a salad dressing, but the balsamic dressing was thick, tangy, and a little sweet. Delicious! The pizza had just enough cheese and a great chewy crust. The drinks were strong, very well made (coming from a former bartender) and really unique (their cocktail list was extensive!!!). Best of all, Chris was attentive, super friendly, made great recommendations and even gave me a gift based on our conversations around glassware they had featuring Deep Eddy Vodkas. She truly made my day, and really had us very excited for our 5 day vacation up here. read more

The convenience factor is probably the best part of this place if you're staying at sun mountain lodge. The service was good, not outstanding, but didn't disappoint either. We both had a glass of the Goose Ridge Cab, I wasn't a fan and I'm a cab drinker. It had quite a bite at the end. We also shared the hummus plate which was good, hummus had good flavor and veggies were fresh as was the nice soft warm pita bread. I ordered a side salad and the chili. The chili was so flavorful and packed with tons of meat and beans. The salad was fresh and crisp with a good variety of tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers, not just lettuce. My SO ordered the Wild Boar pasta. The sauce was delicious and there was plenty of it! Pasta cooked well. Overall good food, good service, great view! read more

A friend and I drove to the beautiful Sun Mountain Lodge for a late lunch and to enjoy the view. The staff was really friendly and our service was outstanding. We started with the delicious Curry Chicken Soup. The soup is chuck full of nutrition and flavor. Wild rice, chicken, pineapple, celery and spices created an exceptional soup. Served with a generous slice of focaccia, it filled us quickly. We also split a smoked steelhead, quinoa bowl topped with house made lemon-dill dressing, which was yummy and nutritional. Of course, the star of this restaurant is the stunning view of the pine forest. Other reviewers have awarded the grill with five stars, and I wholeheartedly agree. read more

Okay, it's been almost 3 years since our last visit and everyone deserves a second chance, we came in for lunch. The restaurant felt brighter and cleaner. The server came to our table and greeted us almost immediately. We placed our orders and wandered off onto the deck. Amazing views of Methow Valley... we even saw a family of deer resting by the side of the building - beautiful. Loved their French Onion Soup... probably one of the best ones I've had in a long time. We ordered the Traditional Reuben, Prime Rib Dip and the Valley Burger - all of which were very good. Bread was fresh, flavors were great and portion size was perfect. I only wished the server had informed us that she just did an upcharge on the soup du jour in place of fries on the Prime Rib Dip. Okay so I tried this with my girlfriend the night we checked into the Sun Mountain Lodge. Plus it was really the only thing open and I didn't want to go in to town. To start this out I was really tired, but I can say that I really enjoyed the food here. But I'll get into details later. The Wolf Creek Bar & Grill is located inside the Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop. In fact if you want something to eat while staying there it's this bar & grill of the fancier restaurant on the premises. Other than that you're heading into town. The bar & grill has a few great things going for it. First it has a great view overlooking the Met how Valley and downtown Winthrop. It hard to ask for better scenery while eating. Second is the staff. They are warm and very friendly. Now onto the food. I order the mussels and pasta. My wonderful girlfriend ordered the prime rib dip. Well my course came in some really odd table ware, but I really don't care about that. I just want my food to taste good (I think I've become a food snob, thank you Neil W.). Unfortunately this one didn't really live up to my expectations. The red sauce was a little watery, however the pasta was perfectly cooked. The mussels were kind of spongy, like they weren't fresh or had been frozen or something. The texture was just a bit off. Now my girlfriend's prime rib dip was another matter entirely. That was well cooked, flavorful, and filling. I really wish I had ordered that instead. My experience here wasn't great and I'm hoping I just caught it on a bad night. Of my girlfriends experience was a little better. I think both of us were just expecting better from a restaurant in such an upscale lodge. read more

This review gets two stars for the view only! My wife and I both ordered burgers that were nothing special for the prices they charge. Apparently they do all condiments on the side, no bottles of ketchup. I understand it's for appearances or what not but if your going to operate this way then remember to bring little side of condiments out with the meal. My wife got a side of mayo and ketchup just big enough to dress her burger but I only got mayo. After 25 min and 2 times asking for ketchup it finally arrived. Needless to say my burger was cold by then and my wife had already finished her meal. The service here is not up to the quality of lodge/ hotel they are trying to create. Breakfast at the lodge is great!! But for lunch and dinner just go to town. read more

Every night, after a day hiking or exploring the Methow, we looked forward to dinner at the Wolf Creek. The menu was wonderfully varied, with our adult favorites being the French Dip and the Wild Boar Sausage Penne (and the pizza version was good too)! On the kids menu we were impressed by the crunchy fish and chips (our eldest's favorite) and the steak which was perfectly medium well. So good, it tasted like it was dusted with dry porcini and yet cost only $10! The food and drinks were excellent but really a big thank you goes to the dinner staff, especially Ashley, April, Katie, Issabella and Heidi, who nightly were wonderfully hospitable and friendly towards our young boys, Albert and Ted. Sorry guys but Washington state has so many things to offer, amazing wine (local), great produce, a variety of local meat... And the food is still bad? Get a clue! We ate here after a long day of driving, basically only place open . We were the only customers . Waitress was wearing gym clothes. She wasn't friendly or unfriendly but matter of fact. I ordered the beet burger. It arrived room temp with three slivers of pickled beets, weird flavor hummus ( I think it was hummus ) wilted arugula and on a dried pita bread. Tasted terrible . Served along side cold fries. My sons pizza was a little round frozen pizza . Maybe it was a off night? The breakfast in the dinning area was great the next morning, my advice is to eat In The dinning room . Oh the bartender deserves 5 !! He was so friendly and nice on our visit ! We came in for dinner hoping to have pretty amazing food as Sun Mountain Lodge is a nice lodge and left feeling really underwhelmed with the food and service. I think I would give two and a half stars if I could. The atmosphere and view was great. Nice large windows to see the views of the northwest and inside very cozy. It was a busy Saturday night with a wedding in the formal restaurant so we had to wait a while to be seated as they told us we could not make a reservation but it was no biggie as the bar was right there and we were able to have a cocktail while waiting. When we sat we ordered the meat and cheese pate that was $19 and was not Worth it at all. Very little meat, cheese, and flakey crackers. We also got the chicken wing that were just ok. They have an all day menus with soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta etc, and then a dinner menu that was 3 courses. My husband ordered off of that and his Caesar salad was tiny and his Ribeye steak was thin with no flavor. I had the southwest salad and that was really good But our friends sandwiches and fries were sorta the same just ok. Not the worst ever but not at all what we expected for the $300 we spent for the 5 of us to eat a casual dinner. read more

Pretty good experience overall. We just had appetizers because we had a big lunch. My husband ordered the pulled pork nachos, which were amazing. The meat was perfectly tender and great BBQ sauce. I had the curry soup, which was also tasty. It didn't blow my mind, but was decent. The mango chutney on top was the bomb! The view wasn't bad either. Our meals were delicious. We were dining with another couple and we were both celebrating our anniversary. 3 of us experienced stomach pain following the meal & through the night. The only good we'd had in common all day was the cheesecake we'd had for dessert. I notified the hotel the next day. Heard from the kitchen 2 days later that they'd look into it. My husband and I come to Winthrop quite often and love to come to The Sun Mountain Lodge for a cocktail enjoy the view and curl up by the fire. It's such a beautiful cozy place. Improvements that cane be made: Your staff could use uniforms and an iron. Such a beautiful place should have their staff dressed better!!!, Your bartender not the most friendly happy person. Sorry we came during shift change :/ I fully understand we all have crapy days, but don't take it out on the customer and with the place nearly empty it shouldn't take ten minutes to pay for our tab. read more

Very disappointed with the overall experience. I had the Bison Pot Stickers and they had no flavor, even with the huckleberry ketchup they were bland and dry. Not worth 14 dollars and the portion was small. French Onion Soup tasted great but was a very small portion and had very little bread. Also, the side of the bowl had most of the cheese melted to it. Good taste in the broth and was oniony which made it worthwhile but I will not order it again. My brother had the Prime Rib Dip and said it was good but not great and had bland au jus that required extra salt be added to give it flavor. I will definitely stay at the lodge in the future but will only use the bar and grill to avoid starvation, wet my whistle and to enjoy the view... read more

I recently dined twice at the bar & grill at Sun Mountain Lodge. I will start with the positives: The view. The view is fantastic. Now the negatives: The food was bland, overpriced, and constantly under/overseasoned. The Steak bites were underwhelming and expensive, the french onion soup tasted extremely salty (both times), and the rest of the menu seemed to be a combination of poorly-designed dishes., all for around 15 bucks or more. Additionally, the service was pretty slow, considering the waitstaff/dining guest ratio. I can deal, but if I do, I expect to be compensated with exceptional food. I was not. There was also a large bumblebee hanging from one of the window fixtures wrapped in cobwebs, which looked like it had been there for centuries. I was pretty surprised it wasn't cleaned up. I didn't find it appetizing. I consider sun mountain lodge to be a pretty premium resort, so I was surprised to find that I was eating food that I would expect from a kitchen at a motel. read more

Food is pretty good. Nothing super fancy as the prices would make you think. The prices are outrageous for that you get. The wait time to get your food was 25minutes or more all three times we went.
