The GF options were spot on and tasted like regular dough, bouncy and light, which was impressive…read more I wish we would have skipped the pillow bread, it's a lot of bread and is the same dough as the pizza dough, just not pressed out. However, the honey goat cheese combo on the bread was stellar. Worth getting if you have a larger party, perhaps with just 2 if you really love bread. The flavor was a bit lacking, the sauces were somewhat bland, spicy from peppers but not robust. For the price point, it was alright but nothing terrific.

Excellent find on our way out of Winthrop. Most of Twisp Works was closed (weekday right around…read morenoon), but Lal's Fork food truck serving Sri Lankan street food was just getting started in their parking lot. Smelled good. Menu looked good. Great impromptu lunch! They offer curry & basmati rice plates, and you can choose whether you want 1, 2, 3, or 4 curries. We shared a 3 curry plate and selected mushroom, dahl, and mango (they had a selection of meaty curries as well). Food came out promptly, and we enjoyed it at one of several picnic tables under a large tree canopy which offered protection from the rain this day, but would be equally good for providing shade on a sunnier occasion. Each curry was so flavorful, it was hard to choose a favorite. Even between the two of us we probably consumed a little more than half and took the rest with us. It was just as delicious later on. And the hot sauce accompanying it was really spicy and tasty, too. Lots of teens showed up as we were finishing our meal, so this must be a popular high school lunch spot as well. Lal's Fork was such a happy and unexpected discovery!

I wasn't expecting to encounter a Sri Lankan food truck in Twisp, but what do you know? There it…read morewas, parked on-site at Twisp Works (also worth checking out). If you aren't familiar with the cuisine, Sri Lanka is a South Asian island country in the Indian Ocean that is a neighbor to India. While it is not part of India, I would describe the food as having many similarities, while being its own distinct cuisine. For example, we had vegetarian samosa at Fork, and while many of the elements were similar, the taste was different (spices, some ingredients). The curries were also distinctive, including a fruit curry (mango). The most unique dish appears to be a classic Sri Lankan item called kottu roti, which was chopped roti bread mixed and stir fried with vegetables and meat (or just veggies). This was my personal favorite, though the spouse was pretty into the samosas and the mango curry, despite "not liking mango." It was super hot that day, but luckily the picnic tables have tree cover for eating. Judging by the weekday crowd of workers on lunch, Fork seems like a hit with the locals, and it's easy to see why. This would be food hard to come by in some U.S. cities let alone a pretty rural area of the Pacific NW. Check it out if you are visiting or live nearby!

This is a small restaurant that offers teriyaki, but also a variety of Asian-American food (things…read morelike yakisoba, pho, and orange chicken), but also burgers and fries. I tried the chicken teriyaki, which was pretty standard, though nothing special. While I was there, all kinds of locals came in getting food to go (and a few planning to eat in the restaurant). The most popular thing with locals were the burgers & fries, though many other things were picked up while I was there -- obviously this is a place that has gone beyond their original teriyaki to serve more of what locals crave, whether that's burgers or Chinese or Vietnamese - a sound business decision in a small town. This isn't a gourmet restaurant, and the ambiance is fairly sterile, but they produce the food quickly and have a thriving take-out business. The two anglo employees were helpful, and the eating area in the restaurant probably gets used in the evenings (I was there for lunch, and most orders were for takeout). They have an outdoor seating area (covered in snow when I was there) which probably sees use in warmer months. Given that most restaurants in the area serve pub food or steak, this is a pleasant departure -- and when I want variety in the Methow valley, I'll be going back.
