Dined 3/21/12 W): Kick out the style and bring on the substance!
A friend and I had just finished watching a special 70th anniversary one-night screening engagement of "Casablanca" at the local AMC 16 in Burbank, when we looked at each other knowing what was on each ether's mind..."let's get something to eat!" Neither of us had sushi recently, so the we had a nice walk down to Wokcano on San Fernando Rd. I'd never been to this location before (directly across the street from the Gordon Birsch), and we knew they're open late. It was around 10pm when we finally arrived and the place was pretty empty except for two separate couples.
We were seated quickly by our young waiter, Brett, and he was ready to take out order (must have been a really slow night). We needed to deliberate over the menu so he started us off with water. I ended up ordering a Guinness on tap (still trying to carry on the St. Patty's vibe from the past weekend [$6.00]), and we shared the Truffle Edamame ($6.00), Crunchy Roll ($11.00), Spicy Crabmeat Tempura Roll ($11.00), and some kind of chocolate & pistachio dessert ($8.00).
What can I say about a perfectly poured/tapped Guinness except, Yes, please!" A hefty bowl of Truffle Edamame came out with the scent of glorious garlic trapped in the steam that was being emitted. This was a good call by my friend whose had it before. Man, you can seriously eat the entire edamame (pod and all!) with each one so soft and flavorful inside and out! I don't know if I can have standard edamame ever again. We polished off more than half the endamames before our two sushi rolls came out in all their fanciful glory. Each one was cut into eight pieces (pretty standard), but I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed in the overall portion size. Nevertheless, each was tasty, freshly prepared, and hit the spot...albeit, uninspired at best. Once the last cut roll piece and edamame was downed, the dessert came out. The waiter described it as the Hostess snowball snack cake, but chocolate instead. He wasn't kidding! My friend even went further and described it as a "boob with a green nipple" (crushed pistachio placed on top). Ummm, sure, and I planned on feeding on it! Again, I was a bit disappointed in it's A-cup shape because we shared it, so I think a B-cup would be more satisfying.
The service was good, as it should have been, with the lack of diners. A bit more patrons came in while we were there but definitely not a rush. The two female hostesses were affable and joked about my large ICEE container I still had from the movie and not able to bring outside food. Good times left with laughs and a smile. Our waiter filled our water glasses when needed, and he would check on us to make sure all was fine.
Parking is ample in downtown Burbank, whether it's n the street or the many parking structures.
Overall, I do like Wokcano, but it's not necessarily a sushi destination for me (my heart belongs to Ichiban in Glendale). I'm all about the food, and as good as it is, it's not great, and the idea of "gourmet" sushi in a club-like atmosphere isn't for me. I see this place more for it's happy hour and hanging out with colleagues after work, but not as a serious restaurant; too much of style rather than substance. Based on said portion size, I didn't see much value as noted by the prices I quoted above (total bill was around $45.00 before tip). But I will say, I am a fan of the Truffle Edamame. As I said, I felt the atmosphere and décor is too shee-shee, there are plenty of tables and seats, and attire is business casual at the least. Since we can only rate in whole stars, I give them 3 1/2 stars. And they take my credit card of choice...AMEX! read more
