It only occurred when the weather was hot. Basically, only summer afternoons. We had PG&E come out repeatedly and they could not find the source. We spoke with plumbers and other heater repair companies. All of them told us that it was not our heater; that we were wrong about the inconsistency of the smell. That gas leaks are only consistent and would not happen only when it was hot. We were told that we must be wrong. We felt like we were going crazy. Until we called Bay Area Water Heaters and Dave came out (with a whole crew). He took the time to inspect our heater and said yes, this slight gas smell on hot days is something he had heard of. It was likely due to an old valve within the control panel. He walked us through our options but ultimately suggested replacing the entire heater. His team was able to do the job right then and there and at a reasonable rate. It was completed within the hour. And sure enough, no more gas smell in our garage. Dave and his team were amazing and incredibly professional. We will be using this company again.

I had scheduled a service appointment and needed to cancel. I understand that cancellations impact a schedule, so I remained completely calm and polite throughout the conversation and paid their full cancellation fee immediately without hesitation or dispute. Despite complying with their policy right away, the owner became hostile. He lost his temper, raised his voice, and berated me for how much the cancellation hurt his business. A cancellation fee is meant to cover lost time--it is not a license to yell at and lecture paying customers who are speaking respectfully. Handling ordinary business interactions with this level of aggression and emotional volatility is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise against dealing with an owner who treats customers this way.

He's actually the first tech to come out and clean our compressor with a detergent! Usually they just spray water. He replaced everything with high-quality components, including: * New hot and cold water flex lines * A brand new water shut-off valve * A new gas flex line and sediment trap * Fully reworked earthquake straps (to meet California safety codes) * Properly updated T&P line and venting He also took care of the removal and disposal of our heavy 18 yr old tank, leaving the utility closet completely clean. We were replacing a gas water heater with a hybrid electric heat pump water heater. Generally, this…read moretype of heater costs twice as much (price and installation) as a traditional electric water heater, but costs a lot less to run (and therefore you recoup the additional cost in a few years from lower operating costs). I had a very easy experience getting an on-site quote. I received 3 quotes for this job. 2 quotes, including this one, came in around $7100. I went with a third one at around $6700 (which included an additional mixing valve) and am very happy with my decision. Overall price was not a big part of my decision, but brand of water heater was. After doing some research online, the most recommended brands are AO Smith and Rheem (GE). Both higher quotes were for Navien, which has only been making heat pump water heaters for 1 year, but I was told that it is the most reliable brand. I did not understand how this claim could be made, given how short the duration of evaluation for this product. Even the worst appliances usually work for at least a year. So I requested a quote for AO Smith or Rheem, which I did not get. I'm not sure why my brand request was not honored, but it made me question whether I should go with a company that either has communication issues or maybe some type of deal with Navien that I was not informed about. Many water heater installers are preferred installers of certain brands, which means they can get better pricing, etc. I did not want to be a guinea pig for Navien.

Victor responded quickly through Yelp and followed up with a confident bid via email after I sent him photos of my air handler and condenser. I was impressed by how prompt and competitive his pricing was, especially without needing an onsite visit. I was skeptical so I did end up scheduling an in person visit just to make sure the price was still valid. Sure enough, Victor confirmed the job was straightforward, and his original quote stood firm. No hidden costs, no surprises, just exactly what he promised. I was super impressed and the price he gave me was fair & competitive compared to some of the other quotes I got. Ironically, our AC gave out right as we were shopping for bids, so the timing couldn't have been better. We signed the estimate with UHS and had to wait for them to complete their onboarding as an approved vendor for the SJ EcoHome Payment Plan program. Fortunately, they were already in the final stages, so all we needed was Victor's green light to move forward with the application. UHS came and tackled our HVAC replacement job in one day. We also tacked on duct cleaning and installed an ozone free air scrubber. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Working with UHS gave us peace of mind, knowing they're fully licensed and highly recommended on Yelp & Google, and that we could maximize all the San Jose heat pump incentives. Gina at the office was also super great to work with, super responsive and quick to pick up the phone. Every person we interacted with at UHS had a professional, friendly demeanor, and unlike some other vendors, there was never a pushy sales pitch or that uncomfortable feeling of someone overstaying and talking my ear off trying to sell me their service during the estimate visit. Overall, you can't go wrong with Upgrade Home Services, definitely consider getting a bid from them if you're in the market for a new HVAC system. PSA, the heat pump incentives really sweeten the deal!
