Generally, this…read moretype of heater costs twice as much (price and installation) as a traditional electric water heater, but costs a lot less to run (and therefore you recoup the additional cost in a few years from lower operating costs). I had a very easy experience getting an on-site quote. I received 3 quotes for this job. 2 quotes, including this one, came in around $7100. I went with a third one at around $6700 (which included an additional mixing valve) and am very happy with my decision. Overall price was not a big part of my decision, but brand of water heater was. After doing some research online, the most recommended brands are AO Smith and Rheem (GE). Both higher quotes were for Navien, which has only been making heat pump water heaters for 1 year, but I was told that it is the most reliable brand. I did not understand how this claim could be made, given how short the duration of evaluation for this product. Even the worst appliances usually work for at least a year. So I requested a quote for AO Smith or Rheem, which I did not get. I'm not sure why my brand request was not honored, but it made me question whether I should go with a company that either has communication issues or maybe some type of deal with Navien that I was not informed about. Many water heater installers are preferred installers of certain brands, which means they can get better pricing, etc. I did not want to be a guinea pig for Navien.

Jorge, who works with him came out and did a thorough investigation of the place and provided a quote comparable, to the competition. The reason I went with these guys was Jorge impressed me with his attention to detail and thoughtfulness. He explained how pluming worked to me, potential issues with my setup that won't be addressed, what I need to watch out for. I felt like all the steps he laid out were reasonable and I knew very well the quirks with my particular system afterwards. Nothing much to talk about regarding delivery - prompt, on budget, on time, did everything that was promised. I'm no pluming expert, but didn't notice anything out of place from a cursory view. Didn't notice any leaks a couple days later. For future jobs, I'll still reach out to these guys. Hopefully it'll be for something smaller than overhauling my entire sewage system...

The job was complicated by 16 years of rust and hard water and pre-existing terrible cracked granite countertops that hadn't been sealed and protected well at all around the faucet area. Eddie was able to schedule me within 48 hours of my call and Jorge from #1 Honest Plumber showed up ready to go. He inspected the issues with my sink and gave me an extremely reasonable flat-price quote to do the work. I agreed and then watched as Jorge did a skillful surgery to excise what remained of the old faucet, patched up my terrible granite like a dentist would patch up a cavity, and installed and tested my new faucet and soap dispenser. Jorge was polite, friendly, professional, efficient, tidy, careful and didn't even roast me for my ham-fisted attempts at DIY work before he showed up. It doesn't get much better than that! Teodor, our project manager, did a great job assessing our home and specifying the system. The installation crew, Azamat and Val, did excellent, careful work removing the old system, running new ductwork, and installing all the new equipment. The install took about 7 days. Communication was great throughout; scheduling, installation, and permitting all went smoothly.

Fuse came in significantly lower priced than everyone for a superior system. We wanted to add an additional vent on the main floor, and some dampers for a few of the vents and everything went like butter. Lex and Maxat were the nicest people, arrived on time, left at 6pm each day leaving the house clean. It was a 3 day install and they finished on the third day. Beyond what they needed to do, Lex walked through things that would be checked by the inspectors even on work they didn't do (GFCI plugs close to where the old unit was), and walked me through why they did some of the things they did because I was curious. We're 3 days in so far, but the installation experience was great, and the daikin system is cooling the house great (and I can already see from the energy monitoring systems we have, it's so much more efficient!).

Last Saturday my 12-year-old water heater developed a significant leak; a call to a plumber I had previously worked with diagnosed the problem as unfixable and my options as replacing with another tank-water heater or tankless -- with price points of $1700 vs. $4k. I was shocked at how expensive water heaters had become. I decided to call around and get some additional quotes, but couldn't get anyone else out to my home without agreeing to some estimate fee. I called Payless Water Heaters & Air Conditioning and they agreed to come out on a Saturday night (a week after my water heater stopped working.) First, I got a call twenty minutes before Luke arrived -- to let me know he was on the way. This call is a nice courtesy, but it was great to know that Luke and Payless were going to be on-time. I let Luke know I was interested in a tankless water heater and he discussed the various package prices with me -- all of which were significantly less than the plumber I spoke to a week before, home depot, or the other tankless company I called. It was so much less (like 50%), I decided on a unit which was larger, and it was still nearly 1k less then the mid-line estimate and 2k under the other. It made the decision easy; so I signed the contract and paid the deposit. I was pleasantly surprised when Luke checked with his dispatcher and he had time to install the water heater the day after. I was so relieved to be getting my new water heater and not having to take a day off work or to have to work-from-home (and miss meetings I need to attend.) The next day, I did get a call from the dispatcher that they would be a little later than they had initially stated; which was ok, but a little unexpected. About 20 minutes before the newly estimated window, I got a call from Luke that he was on his way. Luke arrived on time and got to work; he had my old unit removed and the new one installed in around three hours. The install job is very neat -- all the pipes are straight and level, and everything was well insulated. He even asked for my broom to sweep up my drive way! Luke did an excellent job installing the unit and showed a lot of craftsmanship. read more

Had a leaky water heater, and had to stop water supply to the whole house as the heater supply valve was bad. So, was kind of an emergency. Payless was quick to respond and give an attractive quote over the phone. They waived $85 evaluation charge and sent Luis within an hour of calling. Luis was great, very neat install! Nice guy, too. One thing I need to point out though. They gave an attractive quote over the phone ($1079), final to be given after evaluation. Original install was great, including the earthquake code related straps, support, etc., so they didn't have to do much additionally, except for replacing the usual consumables like supply flex tubing, valve, gas pipe, pan, etc. These things are pretty cheap at Home Depot or any other hardware store - less than $100 total. They said Fremont City Permit is $175 (I see the schedule, which shows $50+$27.60=$77.60). Even if you take $175 for they are getting it for you, it shouldn't be more than $1350-$1400 total. They gave me initial quote at site (after evaluation) for $1973! Then they threw in some discounts and finally brought it to $1623. Still, $225-$300 more than what it should have been. Obviously, pretty high markup for the consumable parts and permit. They should give a realistic quote upfront, rather than giving an attractive one over the phone and a very different one at site. When you have an emergency, you are kind of stuck, and it's difficult to negotiate at the last moment. To be fair, the final price was in line with other quotes I had received over the phone from Home Depot and some other guys. Home Depot was offering 12 years warranty 50 Gallon Rheem Water Heater ($750 + Tax), vs this one 50 Gallon Bradford White is 6 years (don't know the cost, but see online for around $600 + tax). But definitely not 'PayLess' as the name suggests and not in line with the attractive initial over the phone quote. That said, the technician Luis was great! Very neat and clean work! 5 stars only because of him. read more

On Wednesday, 07/20/22, my Mom was taking a shower and noticed that the hot water wasn't warming up even when she turned the shower faucet to its highest setting. She informed me about her experience the following day, Thursday, 07/21/22. I attempted to re-ignite the "pilot" flame on the water heater, but it wouldn't stay on, so I saw the phone number of Payless Water Heaters on a sticker on the unit. The associate I spoke with was able to schedule an appointment for a technician to inspect the unit on 7/22/22, today, between 11 am and 1 pm. This morning I received a phone call that a customer had cancelled their appointment, so a technician would be able to inspect the unit between 9 am - 11 am. The associate told me that the technician would call me as soon as he/she were on the way. I received a phone call at around 9:10 am that the technician would be arriving in about 20 minutes. When they technicians arrived, Jared B. and Armando T., they introduced themselves in a professional manner and I escorted them to the water heater for inspect. They weren't able to re-ignite the "pilot" flame either, so they explained the different packages that their company offered. After choosing the package that fit our budget, they surprised me when I asked them when they would be able to begin the work because Jared said, "Right now". They had the new water heater in their service van. So, even though we have only gone without hot water for a few day, we won't have to go without it for a longer period of time because they are currently in the process of installing it. I will update this post as soon as they have completed the work and I have hot water flowing through the house. read more

Please do not use this company if you expect service to be performed as scheduled. I called them Monday, November 25th, 2013 to schedule a water heater replacement at tenant occupied property I manage in San Mateo. I advised that the tenants were away on vacation for the week and would return Sunday, December 1st, 2013. The female operator who answered said that they could get it done Wednesday. I gave her the tenant's house/dog sitter's number to coordinate access to the property. Wednesday came and went and heard nothing further. I contacted the house/dog sitter and was advised that the scheduled plumber was injured and cancelled. The appointment was rescheduled for Saturday from 3-6pm. Again, the appointment came and went with no one showing up. The house/dog sitter left and was later called by the Payless Water Heater plumber that he would be there after 6pm. By this time, the house/dog sitter was not available to continue waiting for an unreliable plumber to possibly show up or not. Consequently, Payless Water Heater disrupted me, the house/dog sitter and my tenants. Since I could no longer trust a service appointment with them, I hired another local plumber in the area to get the job done. He showed up Sunday December 1st, 2013. Again, PLEASE do not call Payless Water Heater unless you plan on wasting lots of time getting the run around from them! Very unprofessional service...the worst I've encountered in years of property management! Call someone else please and save yourself the aggravation! Had to give them 1 star to post the review. I don't normally contribute to testimonials, however the professionalism exhibited from the front office to service personnel was so outstanding, it must be shared. I had a water heater leak on a Sunday evening. Not only did I receive a call by 7:30am Monday morning to schedule a time window, they found a time the same day. I received a text message when service personnel were on their way and a photo of the individual making the call. I also received a call when the serviceman arrived 10 minutes later and within the window of time promised. I was tremendously impressed with Seth, including the time he took to initially inspect the situation, take pictures and then explain the next steps in the process. Because a replacement was necessary, Seth took time to point out a few items that would be required to bring the job up to code, including exploring multiple options for satisfying the requirements on one provision. I appreciated Seth's detailed explanations, his calm tone and attention to detail in seeking optional ways to comply with code requirements, which allowed me to make a well-informed and quick selection. Seth worked efficiently, cleanly and represented your company in an exemplary manner. Seth took time to explain what each signature was for during the payment process and made sure to cover "next step" procedures for faucets after the work was done. I returned from a week away to be alerted by my fellow condo owner that my water heater had been leaking for who knows how long and there was water all throughout their storage area. This was late last Friday night and I was quite distressed...why do these things always happen over a weekend?! When I was connected to a service organization through my home warranty policy I didn't have high expectations. I am thrilled to say that Payless exceeded my wildest dreams for customer service, professionalism and expertise. I could not have been in better hands with Greg O the most wonderful, knowledgeable service technician ever! He turned what was likely a nightmare into a very pleasant experience. Throughout the entire process Payless kept me in the loop with courteous, timely and ongoing customer service all weekend! They called when they said they would call and I never worried that they wouldn't deliver on their promise to have me back up and running with a new water heater by Monday. Requested a quote from Payless water heaters asking them to send a tech to help investigate why my unit didn't have hot water. The tech was a nice guy, and I explained to him the tankless water heater started malfunctioning and displaying an error cover after my HOA replaced a vent cover. Even with that context, tech sold me on a $580 deep clean (First he pushed for a total tank replacement that I pushed back on because this unit was only a few years old!). When he finished, he tested the hot water for a couple of seconds and said the job was done. Later that night, my water heater still showed the same error code and was not fixed at all. Same night, I requested to have a more expert technician to come out and actually investigate the issue and they had the gall to ask for another $59 consultation fee to come out and look at something They didn't fix in the first place! I can't comment on the quality of the maintenance job but it definitely leaves me with little confidence based on the way they do business. I ended up investigating myself because my family was desperate for hot water and found out the vent cover was the issue (which is something I'm dealing separately with my HOA) but you would think a professional service with the intention of doing a job right would help me figure that out instead of just sell me on a maintenance job and two consultation fees. My water heater was leaking and needed to replace. I called Payless in the morning, and I was scheduled for an inspection and estimate in within couple hours. Before Payless sent a technician over my house, I received an email, text message and a phone call to remind that the technician was on his way. Joey, a technician, showed up on time. After inspected my old water heater, he explained very clearly what needs to be done. Joey also gave me very good estimate to replace a new water heater, plus the service, and certificate to meet the city code. 2 days later, Joey came back to install a new water heater. After few hours, I was very impressed with the job he had done for my house. The water heater was installed properly and matched the contract. All materials were new and installed correctly. He finished the job only couple hours and cleaned up the mess after finishing his work. He also explained how to operate/ safety protection with the heater. I think I made the right choice to choose Payless as my water heater service. Payless has not only provided excellent service, technical skills, on time schedule, but this company also gave me an affordable price for both materials and services. Very happy with Payless Water Heaters and Plumbing wrt the recent emergency replacement of my home water heater. The service agent/installer (Greg) was professional, personable, knowedgeable & communicative. First, he arrived on time! ...and got right to it. He inspected, chatted about the relative merits of the previous installation and the latest code changes, presented options, honestly described advantages AND disadvantages of each, fielded my pretty-technically-detailed questions in a way that made full technical sense (and did not dumb it down at all), and immediately "got" my priorities. He called in a colleague who helped do the heavy lifting portions and who was equally helpful and easy to work with. Greg's install was clean, fast, and executed well. And all this on a weekend--Saturday AND Sunday!--so that my family would have hot water going into the next week. One more thing--I did a bit of research on water heater mfgrs, and it turns out Payless installed one that has a very good reputation. This whole thing could easily have been a nightmare lasting many weeks, with city inspectors failing short-cut work and whatnot, but it looks to be already behind us. We're glad Payless was sent out by our home warranty folks, and next time we'd ask for the same company...AND the same service agent, if we could get him. read more

Danny S. Is an extremely professional, polite, hard-working installation technician. We had an urgent problem, our water heater started leaking and it was a pretty big mess. I discovered it about 8:30 PM on a Friday night before the holiday weekend. I called the 24 hour service number and the dispatcher was very polite and knowledgeable. He took all of the necessary information and said since our water heater was leaking that we would not have to pay the $85 service call fee. Since the leak was under control I had them come out the next day instead of that night. Danny showed up right on time and assess the problem. He provided me with an instant estimate and then got to work. He had a new unit in the van ready to go and got the replacement done in a very timely fashion. He was technically skilled, and also cleaned up after himself. He even helped me Reconnect my gas clothes dryer line back up since I had disconnected it to make room for him to put in the new water heater. When he did the installation even improved the way that the recirculator pump was connected so it can be easily isolated if there's ever a problem with it. I have never had to have a water heater replaced that I would not hesitate to call this company again especially if the rest of their technicians are as good as Danny S. read more

Recently we used Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing to replace our 20+ year old water heater and the whole experience starting from the phone call, to a free in-person inspection and estimate and ending with a quick and professional installation the very next morning has been nothing but pleasant. The price and the most important - availability, were the decisive factors in choosing this particular company. If add all the replacement components individually, shopping for a water heater, finding a professional to install it, dealing with the permit, and later maintaining the warranty - it all adds up, but with Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing everything is in one package for the same price, the next day installation and importantly - headache free. Very good initial phone support had technician available that day to come assess our situation (existing water heater started to leak - after 25 years, not bad). Technician (Donny) called before appointment to let me know he was running behind. Main operator called a bit later to say that he was within 20 minutes of arriving. Very nice to be given this sort of heads up. Donny showed up very knowledgable and ready to either install a similar replacement tanked water heater or a tankless. After lots of good consolation, we decided to go with the tankless. Although more expensive than the tanked version, the federal rebate brought it down a bit and the energy savings will pay back the differential in less than 5 years. Did a lot of reading to understand that my old 25 year tank was a thing of the past. New ones don't last that long. The tankless appear to have a better lifespan. Next day Donny showed up on time and ready to install. He took away the old heater and an ancient soft water tank and put in the new tankless, which takes up a lot less room. The final install looks very neat and professional. We're only one day with the new system, but I'm sure it will work fine. Water is hot, and no leaks. What more can we ask? Had a hot water emergency over a weekend. Called around to several bay area water heater/plumbing specialists, and these guys were willing to come out early on Sunday (9:30ish). I knew what the problem was with my current water heater so I was hoping to find someone with that part. The original person that I talked to on the phone was a bit too eager to say that they will have the part to fix my water heater. Of course, I should not have believed him as they indeed did not have the part. But I will not discount their rating for this. The person that did come on site, Luke, was awesome. He was very affable, knew what he was doing, and provided all the options (wait for the part -- which may or may not fix the issue, or replace the water heater). Decided to just go ahead and replace it given it's age. They quickly located a new water heater which actually was somewhat hard to find with other places (such as home depot or lowes) and came out to install it the next day. Overall, I had a great experience. Wish everyone at the company was forthright as Luke, but I can't expect everything. They came out quickly, gave the options, and executed quickly with the install. Yesterday morning we discovered that we had no hot water. The pilot would not light. This is the second time in a year on a Rheem water heater that we have had a defective pilot unit so I decided to purchase a new water heater instead of repairing our old unit again. I contacted Payless Water Heaters and was told that they were booked (Memorial Day) but could be at my house the next day between 10:00am and 12:00pm. I made the appointment and Payless called me the next day to let me know that the technician would be at my home at approximately 11:00am and were very courteous. Right on time Dave showed up and after accessing the situation provided me a quote to replace my heater with a Bradford White 40 gal. I already had a quote from another Water Heater Repair service which was almost $600 more so agreed have Payless replace my water heater. The technician Dave was very professional in all aspects of his job. The old water heater was removed and the new water heater installed with all new flex pipes, gas line, drip pan, and more in less than an hour. Dave was great and cleaned up the area to perfection, and hauled away the old water heater. I will definitely have Payless perform any future water heater work I may need and will request Dave to perform it. Highly recommended. read more

LOVE these guys. From the 1st phone call with Misha, the customer Service person, I knew I had found the company I wanted to work with. The Rheem water heater from COSTCO started leaking (3rd one in 4 years) and the company they sent me to was less than cooperative, so I went on line ... and Payless sounded right up my alley! Misha spent 30 minutes explaining the difference between a tankless heater and the standard tank heater. The pros and cons - the difference in prices ... things to consider when making a decision, etc. I asked them when they could come over and give me a quote and they said between 9:00 & 11:900 AM the next day (I called at 6:00 PM Friday) and they'd call when they were on their way. 8:40 AM on Saturday I got a call from Jesus who was on his way over with a tank and tankless heater. He looked at my heater and explained the what it would take to do the job with a tankless, but the cost was a bit too high (although it was lower that the COSTCO guy's estimate by 25%) Jesus worked his tail off, did the install, took special care to clean everything up, was friendly, knowledgeable and an all-around great guy. The whole experience was unbelievable. Our HW htr went out 7/23 evening. Immediately I called my home warranty company (Fidelity Nat'l). I was given rush priority. They called me 1st thing in morning 7/24 that Payless would be here sometime that day. Payless sent Giovanni R. He got here @ 11am. He accessed the job; disconnected & took out old htr down two flights of stairs & carried up (that he happened to have in service van) new, state of the art htr with all the 'bells & whistles '. He had to do some soldering to reroute some copper piping, put in new shut-off valve to htr that didn't shut off, causing us to shut off main wtr to our condo. My actions minimized the flooding in the closet. At such a young age, I was impressed @ his journey level & quality workmanship. The invoice #161082 shows all he did. He even offered to clean up the floor he had to walk on. I told him that after all the work he did, by himself, the least I could do was wipe up the floor. He started @ 11am & was gone by 3pm. We were out of wtr for less than 24hrs. I'm thankful FNHW called Payless & that Payless responded so quickly (quality company). Especially appreciate Payless for sending Giovanni. My experience with Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing is through Fidelity Home Warranty. I was called by a lady from Payless that a technician will come within the time frame that she gave me. As the end of the time frame was getting closer, Misha called to apologize that his technician is running behind and if it was alright to have my appointment set for the following day. That was fine with me. Few minutes after the call, Carlos showed up to my surprise. He said he just finished a job 20 minutes away, so he thought he'll drop by and check out our water heater problem. I was impressed. Carlos could have easily put it off the next day but he took time for us, which was very much appreciated. Chad came the following day and did a superb job of installing our new water heater. We had a pleasant interaction knowing that we both came from the same cultural background and he knew one of my favorite authors, Danielle Steel. He saw my books being air-dried after my boxes got wet from the heater leakage. He is an avid reader of fantasy books and told him I am a fan of mystery and crime novels. Salamat and Mahalo, Chad. Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing, Inc. My water heater in the garage started leaking Friday afternoon. Fortunately, a neighbor passing by rang my bell and said "Water was running out from under my garage door." I turned off the water to the house and the next morning starting at 6 a.m. I called three water heater replacement companies none of which could respond until Monday or Tuesday. I finally was able to locate the phone number for Payless and they responded immediately and said a technician would arrive between 11 and 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Technician Nadjib R. arrived at 11:32 a.m. and immediately began the process of removing the leaking tank and installing the new tank. Nadjib also knew how to shut down my solar water heating system, which is connected to the gas water heater system, while replacing the old tank and return the solar system on line once the new tank was installed. The new water heater was up and running by 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The Payless Water Heaters & Plumbing Company's technician Nadjib R. did an excellent job for me and I would not hesitate to use his service in the future. I highly recommend this company's services to anyone with a leaking water heater. read more

I found Payless online and was encouraged by their YELP reviews, so I called them on a Sunday when our water heater started leaking. We had house guests and I wanted fast service. They sent Greg out within 45 minutes (at 5 pm on Sunday!). He was terrific, very professional and personable. He installed a Bradford White 50 Gallon model with a full warranty for six years (replace heater but pay for installation). It really does the job!. I checked competitive pricing and most plumbing companies wanted about $1350 "all in", except Sears, which quoted around $825 for a Kenmore model of the same size on sale (but Sears could not come until Monday). Payless quoted $979 inclusive, but when the rep came to the site, he wanted to add on some charges for new copper hosing, new earthquake belt, and something else. So be sure you ask their sales rep on the phone what the other charges are likely to be, so you can get accurate comparisons. Also, make sure you ask exactly what the warranty covers when getting bids, because some are pro-rated and other are not. Overall, Payless showed up and got the job done quickly and professionally. It definitely needed the replacement, and they got everything reinstalled and flushed efficiently. This was on a Thursday, and Friday was the July 4th holiday. Later that night, my smart water leak sensor on top of the heater triggered a "wet" alert. I went out to the garage and noticed a small leak on the cold-side nipple. I called right away, spoke with their automated assistant, and got scheduled for Sunday morning. Not wanting to wait three days over the holiday weekend, I decided to tackle it myself. I purchased a new hose line, partially drained the tank, and inspected the existing gasket, which looked worn. After cleaning the threads and applying a little faucet grease to the washer, I hooked it back up--no more leaks! Just as I finished the DIY fix, Amanda from Mike Council Plumbing called to proactively upgrade my appointment and send a tech out first thing Saturday morning. The next day, Pablo also called, he or Brandon are fully ready to come out and take care of it. I let them know I had already managed to fix it, and both of them advised me to monitor the connection and call if anything changed. Amanda canceled the Sunday appointment made by the bot. I really appreciate the proactive approach from the Mike Counsil team on a major holiday weekend. Unfortunately, it took 2+ mins to get hot water. The installers came back multiple times over many weeks trying to fix it -- no luck. In desperation, we called Joseph at Efficient Water Heaters who came out and quickly diagnosed the installation issue. The next day, Omar performed the work and now (finally!) our Navien operates as intended. This business is Navien certified and it shows; they definitely know what they are doing. Completely scared us with visions of fire risk and heaters not working in the dead of winter, told us that this wasn't to code (even though the permit was signed off). Loni came out again. Explained everything in great detail, as to how it worked, why the other plumber was wrong. Didn't get mad that we wasted his time, just wanted to make sure that we were happy with our water heater. However, often the truest test of a quality business is how they perform when things do not go well. In my case, I had to go four days without hot water because the unit I received was defective. The day after the install we found the tank had shut down, no hot water. After a reset and restart done over the phone with the installer assisting, the unit unfortunately failed again a short time later. The next day which was a Saturday, another technician came out to swap out the heat sensor which appeared to be the problem. While changing out the part, the tech noticed that insulation near the assembly had burned, and ash was present. He removed the bad insulation, vacuumed it out and restarted the unit. It made a horrible noise, and he spent a half an hour on the phone with the manufacturer tech support trying to diagnose the problem. The noise eventually went away and he finished the repair. Unfortunately the machine shut down again, after we got one lukewarm shower. I called on Sunday, and explained that I was no longer comfortable with the unit being in our house and I wanted a replacement, of a different maker. Without hesitation they agreed, and Monday morning, after acquiring a new model of a different make from their supplier, we got the replacement installed, at no additional cost. These problems are rare, and not the fault of the installer. However, I could not have asked for a more timely and considerate treatment as a valued customer of this business.
