My water heater got broken last Friday afternoon. When I made a phone call to Payless, fortunately they can send a technician next Monday at 9 AM. That's faster than I expected. I've called Payless Water Heaters twice for two different reasons for two different locations. Each visit they were communicative and professional. Although they charge for a consultation visit ($59), they put the charge towards any service they do. Lucky for me their quote was the best for my electric water heater replacement and their consultation was put to good use. Based on some negative reviews, I initially had some trepidation about contacting Payless Water Heaters for a third quote on replacing our 12-year-old 75-gallon Bradford-White gas water heater, which was very near the end of its life, evidencing a slow tank leak. But it was going to a straightforward installation, especially since the original installer (Better Water Heaters) did a fine job including unions at critical joints to make the eventual swap-out easy. As an experienced homeowner and handyman, I know what I'm doing even if I'm paying someone else to do it. So when Joel from Payless came out (less than two hours after I made the call), I could see that he knew his trade and we had a nice discussion about the job requirements. As I'm sure he's instructed to, he started to explain their different offerings starting with the most "deluxe" package which includes an extended warranty and some extra devices (such as leak detection). I never take those things and asked Joel to skip right to the "basic" economy installation package, which he did without hesitation. He gave me the price and much to my surprise it was several hundred dollars less than the two preliminary competing quotes I had, and it included the exact same Bradford-White URG275H6N unit and 6-year factory limited warranty, as well as a couple of not strictly necessary but prudent plumbing upgrades, like replacing the 12-year-old old flexible water inlet and outlet hoses with brand-new, custom-bent solid copper pipe. Joel quickly and competently answered a few questions. As is my habit, I told him that I would evaluate the competing quotes and get back to them soon. He left, and I started double checking my other quotes. But 5 minutes later Joel was back at my front door to inform me that he would not be leaving for a while. An unrelated vehicle breakdown had just occurred in front of our driveway, and he would not be able to get out until after a tow truck arrived and cleared it, perhaps up to an hour. At that point, after phoning his office, he was able to offer a further discount if I would accept the discounted price and let him start immediately. I'm happy that I did. An hour later, Joel had removed the old water heater, the disabled vehicle had been towed away, and his colleague arrived with the new unit. After a total of about two hours, the job was done. No problems at all. I was impressed with Joel's professional manner throughout the process. At the very end, when it came time to pay, the card-swipe unit tethered to his tablet would not read my credit card. He offered that we could enter the card number and other info directly on his tablet. I agreed and he handed me the tablet, opened to the payment-entry page, and backed up two steps so that he was no longer in a position to see me enter my credit card number etc. He may be very sensitive to and considerate of customer privacy and security issues, or this may be part of his training, but either way I thought it was very good and it gave me the sense that I was dealing with a very reputable company. read more

Within hours and without warning, every smoke alarm in your house starts blaring at ear-piercing heights--minutes later, firefighters come and find no issue, but say the smoke detectors need replacing. Within a couple hours, the work is finished and they even added a pipe to direct any future leaks out of the garage! After a quick lesson on how to do routine flushes every 6 months, they pack up and are on their way to rescue other households in need of water heating repairs. It's November 2023!! First, My Bradford tanked WH was installed by Payless in 2021 at high $2k more and only given 3 year limited warranty (& 10 year tank Bradford warranty.) After the tank ran for two and half years, it leaked all the water out on Friday, like a flood to my garage and side yard! I contacted Payless and got told 'all technicians are busy till incoming Monday!' I had No hot water for 4 days plus 2 days Second, Payless came lately on Monday and quoted to replace a new tank on Wednesday, cost another $2k, no warranty for the new. Will you spend money on the replacement and get no warranty? Will you worry about the new tank leaking in 3 years again and spend $2k x 3 = $6k in total to get hot water by buying a 3rd tank water heater??!! (My previous one ran for 16 years at the same site!) Finally, I contacted manufacturer Bradford next day and replaced the water heater tank at low cost with the latest model and warranty! But thru the process, I got surprised to know the leaking tank has 6 year limited warranty, till 2027, different from Payless given 3-year warranty !! OMG! Also I found the tank installed by Payless was manufactured in Sep2020, not 2021! an older tank?? OMG The worst thing is, without this leaking/flood, i will never find out the leakage reason...a lot of Q to talk to Payless!! p.s. I called/talked about my case to Payless and requested her to ask technician Joseph, but I got told her manager (Josh?) will call me once he's available ~ but there's no response so far!! be patient to wait now because i have hot water ~~ read more

Our tankless heater was not working correctly so I contacted Payless Water Heaters. For my appt the follow morning, Joel arrived on time and began the diagnostics. After a call to the manufacturer, he checked the gas flow and removed the front cover. Then as if by magic it was working, no real reason why. He suggested a maintenance service since we have never done one so I agreed and he performed the service. All went well and things are back to normal. The other night I had take a un-intended refreshing but soul crushing cold shower because the pilot light was not having it. My husband didn't even bother that night as he said cold plunges weren't his thing. This company responded back to our cries that night very quickly and came out the next morning. Three years ago I chose Payless Water Heaters to replace my older Takagi Tankless Water Heater. I went with the Noritz brand tankless heater and have been happy with the care of their installation and also the performance of the tankless heater. I was a tad bit overdue for having my Heater serviced but got it done today. Pleased with the ease of setting the appointment and liked their guy Tristan who performed the descaling. Tristan was very willing to allow me to learn and observe the steps involved in performing the descaling process. He carefully described each step in the event I wanted to do it myself in the future. Tristan took care to set up the area properly and leave it neat when the job was done. To do it yourself you do need purchase some equipment, including a submersible pump. However, I'll plan to call Payless in 24 months again to do the descaling as well as a more extensive service of my tankless heater. read more
