EJ Plumbing / EJ Home Services came to my home this summer to replace a water heater. The technician who initially came out to provide the estimate was very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. From the phone calls I had with the company before the installation, I also got the impression that they were well staffed and a fairly large operation, which initially gave me confidence that everything would be handled professionally. I called around and found that EJ was on the higher end price-wise, but I was impressed enough with that first interaction that I decided to go with them. They were also able to install the new water heater ($3k!) later that same day, which I appreciated. Two technicians came out for the installation. Both were friendly, and the installation itself appeared to be fine. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the follow-through and the condition in which the work area was left. After showing us the completed installation, the technicians left without staying to make sure everything was operating properly once we turned on the hot water inside the house. As first-time homeowners, we didn't know that air would need to be bled from the plumbing or that we might initially see sediment coming from the faucets. When we turned on the water about 45 minutes later, we weren't expecting either of those things. It would have been very helpful--and reassuring--if the technicians had run the hot water inside, confirmed that everything was working properly, and explained what we might experience following the installation. We also discovered several hours later that small pieces of installation debris had been left around the work area, along with a screw/nut and a long, thin piece of plastic pipe. There were also dirty fingerprint marks left on the door leading to the water heater. I don't expect a work area to be spotless, but after paying for a professional installation, I do expect the installers to clean up the materials and debris from their work and leave the area reasonably clean. Another frustration was the permit. We were not informed that a city permit and inspection would be required. We later learned about this ourselves and had to apply for the permit and arrange for the inspection, which required me to take a half day off work. As first-time homeowners, this process was new to us, and I would have expected a professional plumbing company to explain the permitting requirements when the water heater was replaced. I initially chose EJ because of its excellent ratings, the professionalism of the technician who provided the estimate, and the impression that I was dealing with a large, well-staffed company. Unfortunately, my experience showed me that a larger operation doesn't necessarily translate into better attention to detail or follow-through. We were apparently their last job of the day. I can't know whether that affected the service we received, but the way the job was wrapped up and the condition in which the work area was left made the experience feel rushed. For the price we paid, I expected better follow-through and attention to detail. Based on this experience, I would not recommend EJ, and in the future I would personally choose a smaller plumbing company where I might receive more individualized attention and follow-through. read more

I think the experience depends on which technician you get. The first guy figured out that our pilot light went out, turned it back on and left without really checking anything. The nice part was he didn't charge me for the visit. I was still having issues and a 2nd guy comes out and spews BS about how water heaters suck now and that they only last a few years. He recommended replacing our 6 year old water heater. When I said I was going to get a 2nd opinion, he asked why I would question his trust. Although it was a bit jarring to converse with the AI assistant, minutes later, the Yelp convo also starts asking me for my details *when I just spent time with the voice AI already*. He explained the entire process in detail and he wore shoe covers when he entered the home. They accomplished the job in a reasonable amount of time, were neat and tidy, and rechecked everything. Also the company was excellent to deal with. Phones were answered promptly. The person on the phone was on point. While they give the typical 4 hour window, they provide updates and you can track you tech once they are on the way helping me at least plan out my day instead of waiting. I cannot recommend this business, Samuel and Christian enough. I would give more than 5 stars if yelp would let me. read more

However, I don't love how difficult it is to get a live person on the phone - every time I call, I get connected to an AI agent. And when I text the number they give, they either don't respond or respond when it's too late. It makes the 4-5 hour windows they give for arrival even more annoying. read more

It was going good and then went crazy bad I called EJ Home Services because I had a recurring sewer backup problem. The woman I talked to on the phone was very competent and likable. I then got a call from a Sales Representative / Inspector who came out to do a video scan of my sewer lines and was also very competent and likable. He said the problem was plant roots that had penetrated my old clay pipes that came from any of the half dozen or so trees and scrubs in the area. These old clay pipes needed to be replaced with modern SDR 17 hardened plastic pipe using a trenchless installation technique that only required that two holes be dug - at the ends of the new pipe that would be installed. This was fine. I agreed and they sent me a written proposal that also looked fine that I needed to sign. I had a question, though, about using another method called CIPP which I heard might be a better solution. The email I got from EJ Home Services with the original proposal said I should call if I had questions. I decided, though, to send an email just so I would have a record of the interaction. I think that was my mistake. The email went to someone who I don't think was one of the people I had been dealing with. I have no real basis for saying this but I wonder if it went to their new AI customer service system that I vaguely recall one of the EJ Home Services people mentioning they were using. I am not at all sure of that but something went crazy bad at this point. I got an email back with four proposals. One was for the CIPP solution which was too expensive and wasn't better than getting the new pipe. The other three were new proposals for the service we had already discussed and agreed to that I just needed to sign to get going. The first proposal was the same as I got before but this one had an extra $2K charge for filling in and covering one of the two holes they would dig for the trenchless installation. So apparently the original agreement they sent didn't include this. Nothing in the agreement, though, mentioned that they didn't plan to cover one of the holes and the guy who came out to do the inspection did not mention this. What a surprise!! The second new proposal cost roughly 50% more than the original proposal and would extended the new SDR 17 pipe much further than the original proposal. Again, the guy who came out to do the inspection did not mention that this was needed even though I had asked him multiple times about where exactly did his video pipe scan reveal there was a root penetration problem that needed the new pipe. The new proposal also did not provide any explanation for why it was needed in these new areas that the first proposal didn't cover. The third new proposal said that they would not use the trenchless installation but would instead dig a full trench at roughly double the cost of the original proposal. Again, no mention of this from the guy who did the inspection and no explanation for why it was needed in the new proposal. I talked to the woman who I had originally spoken to on the phone about this. She wasn't aware of these new proposals but said she would look into it and get back to me tomorrow. Btw they sponsor both ads in Google and Yelp so don't be tricked into calling them like I did. They will definitely pass down the cost of these ad to you. Sometimes you know something is not right but you ignored the signs and you ended up paying for it. I found EJ because even though it was a sponsored result it has high ratings. When I called I realized that the receptionist is AI agent which is already weird because why would a local business need an AI agent. I also echo another reviewer that their "free" visit is NOT free. I had a water leak at my tenant's place. I'm out of town so I told the AI agent to contact the tenant instead of myself but I still keep getting calls. After he finally arrived, the guy quoted me $298 to open the wall which they do not patch up unless I pay for the $479. Note that it's a wall that they opened to investigate the problem. Btw it turned out they didn't need to open up the wall because they could have found out the problem if they had just opened the shower on/off trim cover. Finally the guy quoted me $2900 to replace the leaky valve plus patching the two holes they would have opened (including the one they opened in my kitchen ceiling). When I asked for discount, they made the $298 for opening the first hole would be credit back as if it's a discount. After a lot of "oh I can't give more discount" I got an additional $200 off of the $2900 price. Even in the Bay Area the price is ridiculous. I finally decided not to go ahead even with the $298 loss I'd incur for a hole they opened and will not patch up. read more

I have been using EJ Plumbing for multiple rental homes over 5years. Their services used to be reliable and good value (hence the multiple year loyalty) but has particularly been terrible over the last week for a project we've been working on. We have a new laundry unit, and installation requires a hot water valve replacement because the old valve is stuck. Typically, for things like this it requires cutting the wall open and whole box replacement -- understood. We like to have the security that closing the valve provides, so we wanted to move forward with it. 2 men that came out to give an estimate on this work (Wednesday) pulled the washer and dryer out of the wall and left the dryer vent unhooked (their task was to provide an estimate) When we requested re-hooking the units, they only hooked the washer. Another guy came out on Thursday and told us that the work estimate they provided was wrong. I asked to speak to his manager to understand because all of this is extremely shady work ethic. Next day, the same guy called me back saying he is the manager. Now each time I run the dryer -- the fire alarm in the house goes off. I`m in an emergency situation and EJ will not schedule any work or rebook my dryer until Wednesday. Whatever changed in their management -- it's going down. read more

However, now they send out a estimator/sales guy that tries to inflate the estimate without ever using a screwdriver to determine the problem. I recently had a minor plumbing problem and the estimator gave an estimate of over $2K! I called another service and had it fixed for a few hundred. Bottom line: don't use EJ. Find a real independent plumber who is honest and fair. read more

I asked to have my water heater serviced. I asked them to pull my anode rods. I was told by my tech that he had never pulled a rod on a 4 year old heater and to wait until 6 years. They then told me that since we were on a well, we should buy an electrified rod and have them out asap to install it (at extra expense to us) even though they had not established that we needed one. There was no smell or rust in the water. We test the water regularly. We were ready to have them change the rod at the service if we needed one, but they would not even look before they advised a new one. read more

I was able to use a $49 off coupon that I found on EJ's web site. Joel was very polite and quick. One negative is that their web site said I could schedule an appointment online, but after I entered all my information (including pictures), the web site said there were NO time slots available. So I had to call their number and verbally give all the same info I just typed-in, and I was given a same-day appointment. So obviously the web site is not connected to their calendar. So just go to the web site to download the coupon (which you can give to the technician at time of service), but skip the online scheduling. read more

Well my partner fortunately had "water heater" in her contacts, and EJ Plumbing for that. Turns out they were one that replaced our previous problem water heater 10 years ago, almost to the day. So, great news that our water heater lasted 10 years, and that EJ Plumbing now Home Services are good enough to be around for this whole time. So, my partner calls EJ, and they are available to come by. Issac comes out, assesses he situation, makes a call, and they're able to replace the heater that day. TBH I didn't have time to price shop, but EJ is the one who did the job well enough last time so that their work lasted a decade, that's a pretty good value. read more

They assure me there is no power getting to the compressor. So now I'm having the new company send out an electrician to sort it out. So I feel I have wasted both money and time trying to address this with EJ. I told them I don't want anymore "service" from them. I originally contacted Sam D. from EJ Home Services to help finish installing a new faucet in our bathroom. When Sam arrived, he started looking at the water service in front of our house and noticed we didn't have a pressure reducing valve (PRV). He tested our water pressure and found it was well over 100 psi when code requires it to be less than 80 psi. Then he looked at the main line from the water meter to house and found it was still galvanized steel, likely the original pipe installed when the house was built in 1955 (the same year Doc Brown invented time travel and the flux capacitor). Long story short, we worked with Sam to replace the water main and install a PRV, and he threw in the bathroom faucet installation for free. When a section of the old water main was removed, there was evidence that it had already started to leak. After the PRV was installed, the pipes in the house making noise when the water to certain appliances was started and stopped. You might be reading this and think that Sam upsold us, but his detective work likely saved us from an expensive water main emergency in the future, and explained why we had spent so much replacing shower cartridges and toilet fill valves over the years due to the high water pressure. I would not hesitate to call Sam again in the future for any plumbing projects we have. read more
