I love Beauty's so much, and Yelp tells me I've been coming here for over 9 years. I had a long hiatus because I wasn't that impressed in the beginning, but as the years have passed I've become a dedicated fan and regular. Why? 1. I think shakshuka is one of the most overrated foods, and I really don't like it, but Bueaty's is the best, and it's all about the fresh, chunky tomatoes. 2. Prices, though high for 2012, are low for 2019. I think this place has remained remarkably affordable as many others have doubled. I can fill up on one of the omelet dishes for $10, and even the breakfast bagels at around $6 are super filling. High quality, good fuel. 3. Staff is friendly with little turnover. I see the same friendly faces regularly. 4. They really do move that line efficiently. BIG MINUS ONE: No easy way to just go in and get 1-2 dozen bagels. You have to wait in line up to 20 minutes behind everyone else ordering big breakfasts. They need to fix this. read more

Great food, especially their breakfast. They make bagels from scratch, and have mean variety. Lunch is pretty good too. They have both breakfast and lunch sandwiches, on bagels ( the fried chicken is SLAMMIN'!! There is also lots of sides, salads, pickles, shakshuka and other unexpected options. Had to get some work done while out of office and this shop looked like a nice one. It was a good decision. Great staff, one of the guys even came and cleaned the tables, all of them, about every 30 minutes or so - they were clean. They brought my food to me! Plenty of people were coming, that's a good sign, sitting outside, too. Ordered Vegetarian Bagel although I am an omnivore, just curious, another good decision - not overthought, not pretentious and 'sophisticated', just crispy, fresh and TASTY. A bagel is not a dissertation work, but it needs to be good. It was, very good. Compare that to Noah's, which lately comes with indifferent attitude by the "staff" (few days ago my wife was getting a bunch of bagels at Noah's for teacher's appreciation breakfast and they just threw it all in one big bag, onion, poppy seed, plains, all in one mess - WTF?! ; she had to ask for boxes). But trendy luxury woodfired bagels speak more to me as a carby savory lover. so, i really loved this place! expensive bagels...yes indeed. but they are damn delicious so no complaints from me. That seems to be the general consensus judging by its weekend popularity. A bagel alone costs you about a buck fiffy...but should you prefer a non-plain dry bagel (which im guessing most people do), most of their spreads and add-ons start around $3...so you arent getting away with a standard bagel and cream cheese for less than $5. with this in mind, i decided to be "wild" and get one of their bagel concoctions: the veggie bagel (everything bagel, no contest!). goodness it was delicious. i would never think to put salted cucumber slices, capers, and arugula on a bagel. i totally devoured it. oh and i decided to sub Scallion Cream Cheese for the oven roasted tomato it traditionally comes with. also got a latte - which their one size option (i think?) made it a tad small to me. but it was well-made and enjoyable. if you are willing to spend $10 on a fancy bagel and latte, you wont be disappointed. the bagels are delicious, fresh, have a unique crispness and the toppings really make it shine. should you have a more decisive natural, you can create your own bagel awesomeness picking from their add-on selection. read more

I discovered Beauty's last weekend and I think it's safe to say that my life has been changed. These bagels are perfect. They're dense and chewy, but maintain just the right amount of softness. They're flavorful, and taste the way that any good bread should. I had an everything bagel with cream cheese, and loved the extra crunch from the sesame and poppy seeds. I also had a little taste of my boyfriend's poppy seed bagel with butter-- equally delicious. Bagels are $1.50 each and you can add cheeses, butters, and veggies for a dollar or two extra. A cup of coffee is a couple of bucks, and I loved the flavor. They do have fancier bagel sandwiches, soups, sides, and coffee treats on the menu. I kept my order simple this time, but I will be coming back to try the rest of the food! The store is busy for such a small space. The decor is clean and simple-- wooden and glass planters, brick walls, photographs on the wall by a Bay Area artist. There's plenty of seating inside, with both at the larger tables and at the counter by the window. There are a few tables and chairs lined up just outside the shop, too. When I went, on a Sunday afternoon around 1 PM, there wasn't much of a crowd. However, a half-hour later, there were about ten people lined up at the counter. Now it's not a Jewish style bagel so when you get your order do not get upset with the staff. The style of bagels made here are rustic European- small, somewhat dense and cooked in a wood fired oven to add a rich woodsy depth of flavor. The variety offered is traditional; plain, sesame, everything, onion, poppy and salt (all with white flour or whole wheat). Toppings are traditional to special- cream cheese, tofu cream cheese, honey butter, organic butter, Nutella, chopped liver and fruit spreads What makes this place extra special are their bagel sandwiches. Particularly, the Smoked Trout Salad with butter lettuce, radish and red onions with a side of pickles. The texture in the sandwich is tantalizing. The smokiness from the salad, crisp of the lettuce, coolness of the radish and the slight crunch of the bagel, woodsy flavor of the bagel will make your heart sing and your shoulders dance. The salad is incredible; fresh, meaty, savory with just the right amount of mayo, the smokiness of the trout gives your pallet extra depth. The fruit spreads are also scrumptious along with their Americano. The service is excellent. They are friendly, through in taking the order and in execution of the order. This is where hipsters go to get their bagels! This place is so cute! My friend had tried their bagels at another cafe that sold them and was so impressed that she wanted to try fresh ones at their actual shop! We stopped in on a Saturday morning around 1030AM and it was packed. All the tables and the bar space by the window were filled and there was the line to order was several people deep. We perused the menu trying to decide what we wanted to eat, a difficult task since everything sounded good and looking at what others had already ordered, everything looked good too. While we were in line, a table opened up, so I grabbed it. My friends ordered the breakfast sandwich with veggie sausage on an onion bagel and the shakshuka with a sesame seed bagel. When your order is ready, they call your name and you go pick it up. The breakfast sandwich was very delicious - the bagel was really yummy. They wood-fire the bagels (as opposed to baked in an oven). The shakshuka is something you can only get if you're eating in - it's a dish with two poached eggs in this tomato-y stew. It was also really yummy and very flavorful - there were definitely some spices in it. The egg was perfectly cooked with the yolk gushing out. And the sesame bagel was really good. Nicely toasted and there were sesame seeds on BOTH sides! Most bagel places only put the seeds on the top side. I thought it was a fun place to get breakfast! This place is amazing! I moved to SF last weekend and one of my first weekend tasks was to find a good bagel shop. I heard that SF didn't have good bagels but this place is delicious. They have a TON of great options from all types of egg sandwiches to a smoked trout bagel sandwich. They also have a ton of great options for vegetarians including veggie sausage. Coffee is so-so but the bagels are great! I highly recommend it! Also, it does get pretty busy so be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes for your order. read more

My heart soared when I saw the usual (tho somewhat shorter) line outside, even more so when the menu looked more or less the same. This was a pretty legit little bagel shop in Oakland. I actually ordered the mushroom omelette and it came with caramelized onions and swiss cheese. The omelette was on the smaller side but it did come with a bagel and cream cheese on the side. I thought the filling of the omelette was delicious. It had a good amount of cheese and the mushrooms were plentiful. The bagel was good, but it was a little too crispy, I prefer a little more chew to my bagel. Coffee was really good as well, but unfortunately when I was leaving I wanted a to go cup for my coffee and the lady said that they were going to charge me 50 cents for it. Stingy. Overall: average/good.... I wasn't amazed, which is what I expected after reading some of the reviews. This review is solely off their everything bagel, no toppings. After a long line of waiting (15 ish minutes), I finally was able to order my 3 everything bagels, nothing on it. Why everything bagel? Because I saw the bakers in the back through the open door, take the bagel out of the oven and put it in a box. Seconds later, the bagels from that box were transferred to the serving box where they give you your bagel! Immediately after I left the building, I took my first bite out of my everything bagel. This bagel was soooo freaking fresh. Less than 5 minutes out of the oven fresh. And boy was it delicious. Fresh bagels taste different and their texture is different than a 30 minute or hour old bagel. The exterior was toasty and covered in lots of stuff (poppy seeds, sesame seeds, a bit of salt, etc) and the inside crumb was warm, tender, and had the perfect amount of sweetness. The bagel was dense and chewy, but not overly so. And it was so fresh, ughhhh so good. I wish I got some cream cheese on it. Definitely a great deal too. Happily found this place on Yelp several months ago, and the tasty food and friendly service have earned it a place in our weekend rotation for breakfast-brunch-lunch. My partner and I go every other weekend; he and I often bring foodie friends who are new to the hidden treasures of East Bay food, which says a lot since there are lots of places we could take them. The dishes here are reliably fresh, delicious and non-cookie-cutter. The bagels here are really good and normal-human sized (instead of giant overblown dough bombs), but we don't come here for that per se. Bagels here are really a side dish to all the other thoughtfully created ingredient combos they put on top of and on the side of the bagels. The regular menu has great staples like egg and cheese sandwiches, an awesome fried chicken and cole slaw sandwich (good enough to rival Bakesale Betty's), really yummy deviled eggs, smoked trout salad, egg salad sandwich, homemade pickles and more. The daily egg scramble specials and lunch specials are really worth trying. Today I had a lunch special: housemade creamed herring, salted cucumbers, and sesame bagel with cream cheese, and a pot of perfectly brewed earl grey tea from a generous serving of actual leaves instead of the anemic teabag they give you in most places to DIY your tea. My partner had the breakfast egg and cheese sandwich with chicken scrapple (he raves about it). We walked out happy, full, energized and not overly stuffed, which is exactly as it should be. Wood-fired Montreal-style bagels are a unique delicacy that can't easily be found in California. So it's really surprising that this little bagel shop in Oakland is just nailing them! There can be sizable lines during brunch, but the service and turnover are quite quick. The bagels are the thing to come for, and the menu also includes a number of spreads, bagel sandwiches, and other brunch plates that are simple and delicious! My choice was the greens breakfast sandwich, which consisted of scrambled egg with braised kale and melted cheddar cheese on a toasted bagel (I got the wheat-everything). The bagel wasn't overly large but had the perfect texture and chew, and the sandwich filling was simple and hearty. I also got a side of the chicken scrapple, which was a bit greasy and salty but tasty! Beauty's has fantastic bagels AND great customer service. We ordered delivery and they forgot to add our quart of pickles. I went back later in the week and they gave us our pickles and several complimentary bagels with their sincerest apologies. As for the bagels, they're packed with flavor and have a fantastic hard shell with a soft and moist interior. Beauty's used to be our go to bagel shop but the new bagel recipe is nowhere near what it used to be. The crust is way too tough and hard and the flavor is very bland. I fell in love with this place before I came here when my boss brought in their delicious bagels to nourish us at work for a few days. With bagels baked fresh daily and an emphasis on local and organic ingredients - this is an exemplary nosh spot made for Oakland Local-vores! Bagels cost $1.50 each ($16.75/dozen) and range from the classic Everything, Wheat, Sesame, etc. There are fresh toppings galore (avg. 50cent - $4), and there's a nice selection of savory sandwich options - I fancied cage-free eggs, cheddar, and added arugula for about $5. They also feature an organic Fried Chicken Bagel sandwich for $8.50 which I'll dig my way into next time. Oh, and yes, you can also get your espresso fix here - they do lattes and more! And, in the case all of the above isn't enticing enough, the ambiance is adorbs with a charming brick wall adorned with photos of Oakland, and warm smiles await each customer that comes through the door. I worked at a bagel shop in college (circa mid-90s) owned by a New York native so I feel like I'm coming at this from a semi-professional standpoint. We would get to work at 5 or 6 am (mind you after riding our bikes to work at that hour, ahhhh youth) and work the breakfast and lunch rushes. Chicken salad, pastrami, blueberry, and everything in between, that place did it all. And so I digress.... Beauty's bagel is as solid as you're gonna get in the Bay Area. It's a bit upscale in terms of not being NYC down and dirty deli but what isn't these days. My go-to is the smoked salmon open faced and a 6-pack to go because how can you not take some home for the week. If only I could still eat carbs like I did in college. Sigh. read more

I will never step foot in beauty's bagel shop ever again. The bagels are overrated and the quality has significantly dropped since Wise Sons took over. But that's not why I came here! Last Saturday my husband and I went to beauty's to snag some bagels and when we got home we realized our order was wrong. They gave us regular cream cheese instead of the sunflower one and being vegan this made them totally inedible. So we drove all the way back, my husband idled outside while I ran into return the bagels. Because I didn't have the receipt on me, the dude at the counter refused to remake our bagels. When I couldn't find the receipt in my phone, he said, "We'll, what do you want me to do about it?" To which I responded "Remake the sandwiches that you messed up." I was pretty shocked at his response. Luckily my husband was able to find and text me the receipt and they finally remade my bagels. Dude at the counter never apologized. I can't help but think about whether my white husband would have had the same poor treatment had he been the one returning the bagels. Even worse, they totally skimped us on the sunflower cream cheese on the new order. Horrible experience all around. We live in the neighborhood but I won't be coming here again. The signs aren't very clear and the lady taking the order was super rude and scoffing at us for asking her what "the most popular spread" is. Tried to complain to the manager but wasn't able to get a word in at all so just left. It's a real bummer cause the bagels looked so good. Edit: The owner of the shop (Amy R.) kindly reached out to me with a what reads like an unapologetic apology, asking me to remove portions of my review (the pics) and assuring me that my experience was "valid." That is when I realized that I honestly didn't do justice to her rude employee's rudeness in my initial review. So I'll elaborate. I stood in line for roughly 5 minutes, as the first and only person in line, while there were at least 4 employees congregating behind the counter socializing - the rude employee in the pictures below looked at me a few times before resuming her conversation each time. The customer before me who was ordering at the counter took a lot of time because not only is the menu pretty extensive, it's posted NOWHERE! Older pictures posted by customers show that there used to be menu signs above the kitchen area but they are now no longer there (see my pic below of the blank blue slate that used to have menu signs). I believe this lack of clear posting to be the true source of confusion for the customer before me, myself, and my girlfriend. The only signs visible showed the different types of bagels they sold. Anyway, as soon as the customer before me was wrapping up, the rude employee finally approached the second (wide open and abandoned) cash register to take my order by rudely asking me "what do you want." I was taken aback by both the lack of responsibility (why did she make me wait in line for 5 minutes only to take my order right before the customer before me started paying) as well as the nonchalant "I'm-better-than-you-because-I-know-my-bagels" attitude. I responded by asking "I'm actually not sure. Do any your bagels come with toppings or shmear? Do you have any suggestions for what the most popular spread is?" She scoffed loudly before responding, as if to ensure we knew she had extensive bagel-eating/bagel-processing/bagel-selection experience. She then proceeded to whip out a menu (honestly forgot if it was already on the counter or if she pulled it out from underneath), handed it to me hastily, and said "uhh yeah...we have a whole menu of options...???" My lovingly naive and sweet girlfriend responded by saying "oh wow that's a lot of options!" At which point the rude employee said "yeah it's a lot. Take your time." At this point, I asked to speak to her manager who was honestly super helpless and did not say a single word as the rude employee held up a menu to box us out (see pics), and proceeded to LOUDLY make her case about how she "GAVE THEM THE MENUS WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT." It was surprising she would be that rude to her own manager while spewing her story as if somehow that was the overarching goal, when I was the one who requested to speak to the manager. I actually informed her I was going to record the exchange because it was that rude and unbelievable. I would upload it but felt like that'd be a little overboard. I left the conversation and establishment by saying "it's ok, I can leave. It's not a big deal. Your employee is super rude and I wish I could get a word in to tell you. It's a shame cause the bagels looked so good!" In which case rude employee kept screaming her lungs out. To the owner (Amy R.) - Let me know if you'd like the video for some objective evidence of what happened. You'd probably get a good idea of her rudeness by reviewing surveillance footage of the incident. Even if without sound, her body language is on full display, which speaks to the utter rudeness and vitriol she must have for the world and your customers. I cannot imagine working with someone like that, every single day, in a small bakery with lots of traffic...but that's your problem to deal with. P.S. I really wish rude bagel expert lady wasn't so rude because those bagels look DARN GOOD so my girlfriend and I were both bummed to miss out! Also, Amy R. has commented with what seems to be her justification for rudeness, inefficiency, lack of remorse, and overall condoning of the "I'm-a-hipster-bagel-expert-so-don't-EVER-ask-me-for-my-suggestion-or-else-my-uniqueness-will-be-threatened-so-instead-I-will-scoff-at-you-because-my-boss-and-owner-are-both-richer-versions-of-my-faux-woke-and-identify-as-hipster-but-still-flaunt-my-white-bagel-eating-privilege-whenever-it's-convenient" attitude. Used to be a legitimate bagel shop. Wood-fired oven, pretty decent Montreal-style bagels. Now it's another outpost in Wise Sons burgeoning fake Jewish food empire. Bagels are tough, bland, and less tasty than the average supermarket bagel. They somehow manage to taste like they've been thawed from frozen. Thanks for ruining a good thing, Wise Sons! read more

Decided to see what the long line out the door was all about at Beauty's Bagel Shop. After church we went next door to try this out as our van surprisingly had a flat in the lot adjacent. After waiting about 20 minutes they were all our of the cinnamon raison bagels., bummer! Placing our bagel order and 2 lattes, spiced and regular, we still waited another 15 minutes for the lattes. They were nothing like ordered. There was no evidence of spicI in the "spiced" latte and no flavor in the regular latte, another big disappointment. They did announce that the car blocking us in needed to move or be towed. My husband said two patrons from the shop surfaced and expressed being sorry for the inconvenience. I would not go back as the service was mediocre at best and the product was not at all worth the cost or even as the menu described. I am giving two stars as the bagels and marmalade were ok. read more
