What happened to Smokin Jays?…read more I've been locked into this place since the early days of operating out of the Channel Islands Harbor. I swore by it. Sent my friends and family there. Easily the best BBQ you could get in Ventura County. The thing is, my guy can COOK. But now, it's hit or miss -- and missing more than hitting. Decided to take a gamble recently and ordered a large family dinner and couldn't believe what I found when I got home -- my $30 tri tip and brisket plate was barely a plate at all. That said, the three or four bites I had were pretty good. As good as it used to be? Definitely not. But if I'm paying $7-$8 per bite it, it should be.

For reference, he likes spicy food & I do not.

This particular location is on the opposite side of the parking lot for a Walmart, so there is ample parking. The restaurant is significantly smaller than most of the other locations, but they do have some tables nevertheless for inside dining. Everything seemed clean and well maintained. They want you to order using the kiosk, but i was able to place my order with an employee at the counter anyway who was actually very helpful and courteous. When I'm not already familiar with the offerings, I find these kiosks to be confusing. Right now Popeyes is offering the Big Box which includes two pieces of chicken, two sides and a biscuit. This was only $7, which is a pretty good deal.

He put his hand up to silence me, said he was "on a call," and then immediately started dialing after dismissing me, which felt unnecessary and disrespectful. The restroom was also in poor condition and not well maintained. On a positive note, Maria was very kind and professional and apologized for the situation--she was the only bright spot in the visit. I do want to acknowledge that another employee, Maria, was very kind and professional. She was friendly, apologized for the inconvenience, and handled the situation far better than her coworker. They have several tables for dining in, so you can eat your food there if you wish. I order a small Chicken Philly which goes for $7.79. I thought it was large enough to make for a decent lunch. I will be glad to try this place once again. It's convenient, especially if you're already shopping at the Walmart.
