    Po'boy Shrimp
    Michelle M.

I was in town and trying to figure out where to eat and I'm happy I remembered I haven't had a Po'boy in a while from Cajun Country Cafe. The food is made when we ordered it, fresh. We ordered the catfish salad and a shrimp Po'boy along with peach cobbler and ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious! Portion sizes were good and I feel that they were generous (always have been) with the shrimp and catfish for the salad. We love this place. The staff was friendly and upbeat. I haven't been here in a while and it's great to see the seating area has expanded. There is also a stage for live music.

First time trying Cajun Country Cafe. Definitely did not know what to order for dinner. The two men were very friendly & patient with us. They let us take as much time as we needed to study the menu lol. Tried the combination dinner w/ Catfish, Red Snapper & Shrimp. So good! The sides were great too. I tried these & liked them all: collard greens, red beans & rice, Mac & Cheese, even the potato salad. We devoured the cornbread & fried chicken. Ordered Gumbo To Go. It was salty for my liking. I added more rice to it, to help with the saltiness & to soak up the soup. Felt welcomed, had Great service here & great recommendations. I would definitely come back & try more. Will try to visit again sometime soon.

It smelled so good from the moment you walk in due to the food. They are very welcoming, kind and can help you if you aren't sure what to order. The food speaks for itself, jam packed with flavor and depth that go well separately or together . A go to for fried chicken, mac and cheese, as well as collard greens.

As a New Orleans native who's been searching for a taste of home since moving to California, I've found that most places outside Louisiana claiming to serve Cajun food try but often miss the mark. Cajun Country Cafe, however, gets it just right. I was pleased to learn that the owner is from New Orleans and his wife is from Natchitoches, Louisiana. Their recipes are over 100 years old. The interior feels like a cozy mom-and-pop shop you'd find back in New Orleans, with a welcoming vibe that matches the flavor of the food. I ordered the catfish plate with red beans and collard greens. The catfish was cooked perfectly--crispy and flavorful breading on the outside, moist and flaky inside. The red beans were a pleasant surprise, with a nice spice level that reminded me of home. They were tender, with that smoky flavor you expect on a Monday in New Orleans--if you know, you know. The collard greens were also tender and well-seasoned. I took a shrimp po'boy to go, along with a bowl of gumbo. The po'boy was good, even though it wasn't on traditional French bread. That specific bread is hard to replicate outside New Orleans due to the local environment, so I can't fault them for it. The gumbo was the only item that didn't impress me. I enjoy spicy food, but the black pepper was overpowering and masked the other flavors for my taste. There's a stage inside where they sometimes have live music. If this place were back home in New Orleans, I'd be a regular. I highly recommend giving it a try if you're looking for something with real New Orleans flair. The owners are wonderful and make you feel like you're being served a meal from their own kitchen. I'm looking forward to trying the fried chicken and boudin menu items when I return. Happy to have found this little gem.

If you're craving Cajun-style dishes in Oxnard, this is the spot to visit. It might be the only one in town, but the food is absolutely amazing. I've been here multiple times, and every dish I've tried has been fantastic. On my latest visit, I had the sausage Po'Boy, and it was delicious. My wife ordered the grilled chicken Po'Boy, and she loved it too. We also got potato salad, hush puppies, and gumbo rice on the side--all excellent. Other standout dishes I've enjoyed here include the wings and fried chicken. And don't miss the cornbread; it's heavenly. The staff is wonderful--very friendly and welcoming. I also appreciate that they take phone orders, which is super convenient. The location is decent, tucked away in a corner of a plaza at Ventura and 5th Street. If it were at the Collection, I bet it would be even more popular. Regardless, I'm just happy to have this place around and will definitely be a loyal customer for years to come.

Catfish po boy hit the spot

Was hanging around Hollywood Beach and searched copilot for a fried fish sandwich didn't realize how difficult it would be to find one so I settled for this place which was very hard to find in a very quiet and somewhat lifeless shopping corner. I went inside it was around 2:00 and it was empty. The co owner whose name I believe was Vince greeted me and was very helpful. I decided to eat a fried catfish sandwich with liquid red hot sauce on the side. The sandwich was a pretty good portion on a pillowy inside toasted sourdough roll. Came out in about 20 minutes thoroughly enjoyed it. They have a rather large than diverse menu but I was fixated on a fried sandwich from the sea and this hit the spot. Will be back to try other stuff. Also told me that there's live music on the weekends at night.

The food was great and the owners I presume were super friendly and personable. Unfortunately they forgot one of my sides from the catfish dinner I had ordered so that was a bit disappointing. I was really craving Mac and cheese!!! I didn't bother calling them because I was already on my way home to LA and I couldn't go back to pick it up for them to fix anyways so that's that. Other than that I would have probably given it 5 stars?

Next time you're in the area, stop by Cajun Country Cafe and get the baby back ribs with the Mac and cheese... unique one of a kind rub on the ribs and the Mac and cheese is to DIE for. My pregnant wife had her cravings satisfied.

Oooooooooh took me back to my visit in New Orleans but here in my home of Ventura county, this place has charm, charisma and that southern goodness !!! Yummmmmy I'd rate this higher if I could, a mom and pop authentic NOLA delight Great service ! Owners are sweethearts and the ambiance transports you to Nawlins They got a little stage inside and they said they do live music on Saturdays 7-9:30 pm

The thin $14 seafood gumbo and overcooked onion rings served today.

I ordered the $15 Seafood Gumbo and a side of onion rings. The onion rings were overdone and extremely hard and flavorless. The Gumbo was a very small serving for the price, and although the rice and broth were flavorful, there was no color at all and no vegetables such as okra or corn. There was little seafood to speak of: two shrimp and a very thin crab leg. The other meat in the gumbo was some shredded pork and two slices of andouille sausage. I've eaten here before and the gumbo was always much more substantial in the past. I was one of only two other guests shortly after lunch time, so perhaps the staff was running low on gumbo and diluted it. I include my picture from this time and one from three years ago during Covid. A substantial quality reduction

Warm welcoming restaurant and the catfish dinner was really good and fresh. Since I moved to SoCal, I couldn't find a place that makes good fried catfish, it's as good as I had in the South. I totally approve and would definitely come back again.

    " beignets"

I'd give this 0 stars but 1 will do I guess. The first time coming here, the food was SO SALTY. The brown gravy tasted like thickened salt. . So bad. The shrimp and grits were mid. It was my second time going, and I ordered the beignets. They were not beignets. It seemed like there was maybe no yeast in them. We returned them. And the owner refused to give us our money back. Very unprofessional. i've never seen beignets made this way in my entire life. And for almost $30!!! No thanks. I really don't believe all the reviews for this restaurant.

GETTING HERE:…read more Ventura Crab N Spice is located a few doors down from The Habit on Telephone in Ventura. The footprint is the Winco shopping center. REVIEW: First timer here (what.) and it was so good! Quiet, not too busy on the day we went (during the week). I remember in my baby years of Yelp I used to note that a restaurant was "good" if it was busy. Post-shutdown and currently 2026, it's OK to me if it's ghost town inside. :) We ordered the Clam Chowder Bowl and Sweet Potato Fries. GREAT! The chowder had nice flavor and was thick, and the clam pieces were tasty. The bread was warm and soft, so full of flavor. Service was good. Love the vibe inside, too. Love the decor and the entire vibe. As much as I love seafood, I can't wait to go back to try their other menu items. Thank you for a great meal. Highly recommend!

There was no wait, and we stood there for about 10 minutes without being helped. Finally, a waitress came over around 8:05 PM and told us they were closed at 8 and couldn't seat us. That doesn't make sense--if you close at 8, you should still be seating guests before that time, especially when they've been waiting and there's no line. The lack of communication and basic customer service was frustrating and unprofessional. It wasn't about the timing it was about how it was handled. Standing there with no acknowledgment and then being turned away last minute is just bad service. Definitely not the experience we expected.

I think it all depends whose working. Their cauliflower bites are the chef's kiss! I have tasted a lot of fried cauliflower and cauliflower "buffalo wings" & theirs is by far the best I've had. I still have yet to taste the other flavors. A tip: When purchasing the Asian Glazed bites, I would suggest asking for the sauce to be on the side. After eating 2-3, it becomes overwhelming. Getting the dry rub bites? Get their Jalapeno sauce on the side because without it, the dry rub is really salty. They have a signature dessert that I've tried. I'm not sure if my opinion on it is fair because it sort of had the "absorb all the smells in the fridge" taste. I'll give it another try & hope it doesn't have that taste. But guess what! They no longer have their food truck because their chef is now cooking up some of their menu items at the Rocks & Drams bar in downtown Ventura. What sucks about it is that you won't even be able to get any of their food for lunch during the weekday because they open at 4pm there.

For over 25 years, this spot has remained a "go to" in the community, and we love seeing these old school treasures continue to thrive. Super friendly and welcoming, and the gentleman at the register gave great recommendations. He knew the menu well and was able to help me out with some suggestions. Honestly, the menu is so extensive it was hard to choose, but here's what I went with: Fish & Chips (2 piece plate): 5/5. The batter was light yet perfectly crispy, not overly heavy, and the fish itself was fresh, flaky, and high quality. Paired with a solid tartar sauce, this is a must order dish. The French fries were classic and I loved their coleslaw. Grilled Thresher Shark Plate: 4.5/5. This one was a standout for me given how hard it is to find shark on menus nowadays. I actually grew up eating shark, so this felt super nostalgic. The staff highly recommended it, and I'm so glad I listened. The grilled shark was mild, tender, and full of flavor thanks to their delicious balsamic glaze marinade. If you've ever been curious about trying shark, this is the place to do it. I'll be back again for this soon. Overall, the food was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying and the best part? It doesn't break the bank. Prices were reasonable and portions were generous.
