Where we live, there are many authentic Korean restaurants, and we wanted a little taste of The Lotus to offer our experienced amateur opinions. We shared the pajun "pancake" with seafood. It was a generous and varied mix of tender white fish chunks and al-dente shredded veggies such as scallions, deef-pan-fried in a lightly-crisped light wheat dough. We'd say it was prepared with care, and deliciously savory. We did not go with any of their sometimes-fiery dishes this time. We'll say the prices are not low, but somehow, Ithaca has given us yet another delightfully authentic international treat.

Anyways... what did I get out of it? An awesome group of people and well... MIX. Updating my review because MIX deserves a proper shoutout and I haven't done it justice. This place is unequivocally my absolute FAVORITE brunch spot. The selection is vast, the portions are hearty, and the staff? They're the kindest, most accommodating folks you'll meet. It's like they've mastered the art of making you feel right at home. And the food? Oh, the food is ABSOLUTELY divine. Every bite is a delicious reminder of why I've converted to the church of brunch. Seriously, I went from a casual brunch-goer to a full-fledged brunch enthusiast, all thanks to CHAARG for leading me to this culinary gem. My brunch game has never been the same.

I've had brunch, lunch, and dinner at MIX, and all with varying levels of enjoyment. My recent…read morebrunch experience included ordering a Where the West Begins omelette, which includes "Braised short rib, butternut squash, red onion jam, spinach, smoked gouda". I wasn't sure how to feel about butternut squash with everything else (I'm not necessarily a huge squash fan - but I'm trying to learn to enjoy it), but the omelette was decent... it's the other side on my plate that looked less than appetizing. The biscuit was still covered in flour (and who wants to bite down on a clump of flour?), the cheddar hashbrown casserole lacked in flavor, and the brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal just... wasn't doin' it for me. Other recent experiences have been similar... there's usually one item on the plate that's flavorful or imventive (sometimes a main dish, sometimes a side), and the other parts of the plate are lacking. In reality, I think MIX is suffering a bit from rising food costs and inconsistency in their service and offerings. They've also changed the style of their menu from the original tapas-style to now being more typical entree options. Again... they've lost some of their innovative, experimental approach. In terms of ambiance, it really depends. I've been here for a work event and, because of the number of people, it was SO LOUD... they had also done a buffet offering for the event. As you can imagine, the food from the buffet was lacking, but that's often what happens when you're more mass producing your food (and it's left in a chafing dish, trying to be kept warm). On the other hand, I've been here for a dinner on a random night and was able to enjoy one of their Thai noodle bowls (and split some other apps with friends). The reality is that experiences at MIX are... well... a mix. Whether service, menu offerings, etc., I've found MIX's recent inconsistencies to be a disappointment. Will probably only visit in the future if it's suggested by others.

My mother-in-law had the Bone Marrow Burger (which I got to steal a bite of) and it was delicious and very flavorful. My wife loved her New England Shrimp Roll and soup of the day that came with it (which I also personally verified was excellent as well). And the house wine got a thumbs up from my wife! It's a good thing my family loves to share. The portions were great, the staff was friendly and everyone loved their food. We were too full for dessert, which was a shame because I wanted to try more of the menu. The only thing I could find to nitpick was that the floor was a bit too slippery. Wings Over Ithaca has these sweet chili and Korean wings that are so good, they'll make you question every other wing you've ever had. They're packed with flavor, and yeah, they might be a bit pricey, but they're totally worth it. Now, here's a tip from someone who learned the hard way: skip the meal combos. I know, tater tots and waffle fries sound awesome, but these babies are salty AF. Like, ocean-level salty. Trust me, you don't need that kind of sodium shock. Just go for the wings and keep it simple. The wings here are pretty consistent, like 95% of the time, which is impressive and earns my respect. But, in that rogue 5%, they might be a tad undercooked. It's rare, but it happens. Another thing to note: there are often hard bits on the wings. It's happened with pretty much every order, so it's probably an issue with where they're sourcing their chicken from. Despite these minor negatives, I'm confident in saying that Wings Over might have the best chicken wings in all of Ithaca (with the exception of The Lotus in downtown's Korean soy garlic chicken wings. Pretty unbeatable!). So, if you're in Ithaca and craving wings, this is the place. Grab those sweet chili and Korean wings, forget about the sides, and enjoy. You'll thank me later! read more
