One of my old co workers always talked about this place for years and how it was his favorite Chinese food restaurant. I refused to try it-I already have my favorites and there was no way that this place could compare, no way. 20 years later and in memory of my old co worker I thought I'd give it a try. UPDATE: I have a new favorite Chinese restaurant. I didn't know!! It's a pickup only now, but the inside of the restaurant is so nice. I missed out on that experience. The lady who took my order was awesome, she asked me how long before I got there and she timed it perfect. I made some friends in the little pick up area, who had been eating there for years. And when I got to work another co worker told me it was one of his family traditions to eat there when he was a kid. I didn't know!!! First, I ordered the Mongolian beef, my go to no matter where I go. That was my measure of whether I'd be back or not. I also ordered pan fried noodles-I prefer that with the Mongolian beef instead of rice. And I ordered a couple egg rolls. It was so good, flavorful, great portion, I enjoyed it. I made a mistake ordering egg rolls......... I ordered two and should've ordered 4. Not because they were small but because I didn't want to stop eating them. I will go back and re write my review if something changes but for now I encourage everyone to hit this locally owned restaurant that has been there for 32 years. read more

This used to be the place to go. We moved away and it went to hell. Today tried to reenact that nostalgia. Well the egg foo young and the egg rolls were the pits. The gravy/sauce on the egg foo young tasted so bad my son felt like throwing up. The veggies were over cooked. The rice was bad but the best part of the meal. Even the fortune cookies were burnt. The food seems to have gone downhill, and there's only carry out now, no dining in. Employee taking the order didn't seem to speak or understand English too well which ended up causing a serious problem had I not caught it before my daughter began eating. I ordered 5 meals all together and 2 of the meals had to have white rice only as my daughter has an allergy to shrimp. Picked up the food, drive back home and after cleaning up the sauce that spilled from the top of the small boxed container (not made for holding liquid), my daughter opens her meal and thankfully I caught it right as she had the spoon with rice up to mouth, I noticed the rice wasn't white & then I see shrimp in the rice!! I can't recall ever having shrimp fried rice, normally it's pork fried rice but I always order plain white to be safe. I didn't call to complain, but I did have to call because my daughter dropped her AirPods outside the door when we picked up the food & they were pinging at the restaurant still. When I called and told them I had just picked up food and asked if anyone turned a small oblong case containing AirPods, she asked if I wanted to pick up food? Then I explained that my daughter dropped something right outside their door and asked if anyone turned any small white case in, her response was "you're outside the door now"? This went on a couple more times before I finally asked if there were someone else I could speak with who understood English better, her response was NO, then she hung up on me. I was embarrassed, I had friends in town from down south and they always would tell me how rude people are up north compared to down south, so naturally I used to try & disagree with her saying not everyone is rude up here, just depends where you go, which obviously Wing Wah's is one of those places you can go if you want rude customer service, lol. read more

This restaurant is the best Chinese restaurant in the area. I used to go there before I went to college, and am happy that it's still here today. They only open for carry out now. It may appear that they are closed from the outside due to no other cars in the parking lot. It works for me because I prefer carry out anyways. Everything is so expensive nowadays. First I'd like to say that this location does carry out only as the dining room never opened again since being closed during Covid. I called in an order for my daughter and her friends and specifically asked for white rice instead of pork friend rice as my daughter had an allergy to shellfish as a toddler and I wasn't sure if she outgrew it now that she's a teen (I was allergic also as a child, but no longer as a teenager). The employee taking the phone orders does not speak English too good, but from the bits and pieces of what I could understand when she repeated it back to me, the order sounded right. We picked up the order and didn't check it until we got back home since we didn't want to open the containers that had been STAPLED close ( which fell inside the food when we opened it). When we opened the bags the sauce from the sweet & sour chicken was all over the everything, disintegrated the paper bag and began leaking thru the plastic bag. I've never had Chinese take out where they put hot sweet & sour sauce inside a cardboard box that doesn't seal, naturally the liquid is going to spill out the top even if there is a staple holding it close, lol. Even though I had specifically asked for white rice with the meals, unfortunately all 3 meals contained Shrimp Fried Rice with the exception of the Beef Lo Mein which was absolutely horrible! The noodles were paper thin & the taste was disgusting the teens wouldn't even touch it. All together I ordered 4 meals & I asked for 4 or 5 of the little to go size hot mustard and Sweet & Sour so the girls could have 1 each, they charged me an additional $2.75 for the sauces that other Chinese restaurants include when you purchase a meal. Then to make matters worse, my daughter couldn't find her AirPods when got home, she tracked them & they showed at the address of Wing Wah so apparently she dropped them while getting out of the vehicle. I called Wing Wah's and said that I just picked up an order from there and my daughter dropped her AirPod (earphone's), wanted to see if someone turned them in because they're showing still at the restaurant. The employee responds "you want to pick up an order"? I explained again that I had just left there from picking up an order and my child dropped her AirPods right outside the door, the employee responds "You outside the door to pick up order"? I finally asked if there was anyone there I could speak to that spoke & understood English better, she responds "No" and hung up on me, smh. I did go ahead and make the 25 minute drive back to the restaurant, but naturally even though the AirPods were pinging there, they were nowhere to found. I actually used to love this place and like how they make their own Hot Mustard Sauce instead of buying those premade packets, but I also preferred being able to dine in as it's nicer to eat the food when it's warm and without having everything covered in sweet & sour chicken sauce, lol. They've truly gone downhill in the last 4 years or so, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with their closing the dining room during Covid, but it just seems as they've not been the same ever since so this definitely has been my last time going to this restaurant. I know losing the $100 or so I spent every month getting the girls food from their favorite restaurant isn't going make any sort of difference, but hopefully they'll begin improving their food and customer service as well. read more

Fried rice is not like any other place and the chinese american staples are really good. Orange chicken, Mongolian beef, and especially their fried chicken is really good. Their customer service is quick and efficient. Not only that but they accommodate and provide great customer service. Inside the restaurant is very warm and cozy especially for being in Gary, Indiana. This city is not the greatest but the restaurants in the city make it somewhere you want to be. read more

It pains me to remove three stars from the best Chinese takeout in nw Indiana, but I must due to my last visit. Shame on the owners for being negligent (or too cheap) to changing their over-used, old, rancid cooking oil. Rancidity in anything is a gout trigger. In my large order I had crab Rangoon and egg rolls. When I opened the rangoons I smelled it. Not believing I was correct I proceeded to eat a couple and the egg rolls. The rest of the food was delicious as usual. HOWEVER, the next morning I awoke to a RAGING gout flare up. Hands, knees and feet--swollen and painful. Unless you're a gout sufferer you can't imagine the extent of the pain. Had to call off work for two days. One of my favorites here is the egg foo yung. Can't order it ever again for fear of a repeat episode. And no, I didn't call and complain. Language barrier, real or feigned, led me to just suck it up. But then I felt it obligated to speak out here to forewarn others of a possible bad experience. I will still get food from Wing Wah,but will make sure NOTHING comes from their deep fryer. I would give it 1 star for my last visit but I'm giving it 3 stars because the time before the food was delicious. I ordered the Chefs Special Chicken which was delicious the first time. This time they it was disgusting and I got food poisoning. I took a couple bites before I figured out what they did. They took an already a chicken breast that was already battered and fried, idk from an earlier order?, then remastered and fried it again. Eesh, well it sufficed as an emergency stop for food and a bathroom break to get away from the usual traffic from construction. As others have said, it's in a relatively sketchy spot of road with a handful of strip clubs. The portions were big (as most Chinese restaurants are), but not good. We had Hunan pork and a noodle dish that I forget the name of, which seemed to be seasoned with curry. The pork came with two bowls of rice, one white and one fried. The fried rice was odd - it had some bits of chicken but otherwise seemed to just be soy sauce rice. We also had a bowl of hot and sour soup, which was okay. The hot tea was good! It cured my hangriness, but I don't plan to stop by again. Took home leftovers, but didn't eat them. 2 stars because.. well.. There are very few options in that area! read more

Don't let the unpolished exterior fool you, the food is excellent and interior is super cute. I always carry out because they don't serve wine/beer and don't allow customers to BYO, but it's a nice spot for a quiet lunch or dinner if you don't require any adult beverages. I absolutely love the Mongolian beef, steamed pot stickers, egg rolls, chicken rice soup, and shrimp fried rice. This restaurant is so good. The food is the best Chinese in the area. My absolute favorite is the kung po delight-- it's shrimp, chicken (non fried), and tons of vegetables in a spicy sauce. Crab ragoons are very good too. If you're looking for some good food- this is it. If you want fancy, doting service --this is not. Lots and lots of customers come through for carry out. I have traveled and eaten food all around the world. This is not some hole in the wall off the beaten path restaurant. Wing Wah is truly one of the greatest Chinese restaurants in the US. It has been in the same location in Gary, Indiana for over 50 years. This is because of the awesome food it serves. It may be worn down on the out side and in a bad area, but the finest towns wish they had a restaurant that could make food taste as great as this place. I live over 3 hours from Wing Wah but I dive their a few times a year to get a few dozen egg rolls with their incredible sweet and sour sauce. They reheat well and don't last long in my house. They used to serve the best duck on earth but it's no longer on the menu. Please ask for it maybe they will bring it back. read more

I work down the street at a local trucking company and I go here quite frequently for my lunch hour. They are always busy, and the tables are quite filled up (I've never had to wait, however). The service is great and every waitperson has been nothing but sweet. I get the Chicken Kow, with brown sauce and white rice, which comes with egg drop soup and a pot of tea for about $7-8 total. Chicken Kow usually has white sauce, so I ask for it and there's no issue. I always have leftovers, so it's a lot of food, for a fast food drive-thru meal price. Crab rangoons are ginormous! Chicken soup with noodles is a little bland. Fried rice is really good. Lemon chicken is good. The power went out during a storm last summer. No lights. They made everyone plates of chicken fried rice for no charge. Sure, the interior has seen better days, but the food is made to order and hot. I'll take the rough surroundings over eating cold truckstop food any day. read more

For over a year, after each great dining experience found by the help of Yelp, I have been toying with the idea of writing a wonderful review. With that being said ~ it saddens me to the core that I will break my virginity like this... But this was insane! My husband ordered ~ he's easy ~ my cousin and his wife ordered and then I checked out menu and opted for the combination special of kung pow shrimp ~ but I despise those boo-boo shrimp so as with all Chinese places I get veggie rice. Don't you know those bums told me it was a $2 up charge ~ I say cool just plain rice please ~ still $2 up charge. WTF! Okay whatever ~ but don't eat beef or pork so may I just get a veggie eggroll? ~ no we only have chicken, beef, and shrimp eggroll. WTF! This should have been my que to hit the door and reconsult the great Yelp. I didn't want to be the cause of every ones hunger pains so we stayed and proceeded to get nickled and dimed to death. Extra sweet and sour sauce ~ that'll be 25cents for a tumble May I have some hot mustard ~ that'll be 50 cents a thimble May I have a few more packets of soy sauce ~ they will be 10 cents each. May I have some hot pepper flake chili sauce ~ cost you 50 cents a thimble Fine F it. Pay this awful rude man and let's get home and eat to deliciousness. Got home ~ opened the containers and was like ~ Are you kidding me! The portions were the tiniest, stingiest, most meager portions I have ever witnessed from any Asian spot in my entire life! That sauce was runny and watery. And by some chance I would've wanted the chili sauce with the rooster and green top (you know what I'm talkin 'bout) I would have pulled mine out the fridge. These people are getting over cause there isn't nothing else in the area. The food was decent ~ I've had better from black cooks using recipes off WTTW. The value absolutely sucks! The people are rude and nickle and dime the hell out of you I hate I lost my Yelp review virginity like this. The shame. Wing Wah is the closest Chinese restaurant in my new area. D likes getting takeout here and for the most part, Wing Wah does fill that Chinese food craving. We've strictly done takeout but the restaurant inside looks clean. A lot of the space is dated but I don't imagine they'll remodel given the outside surroundings. A lot of the food portions are huge. For example the sweet and sour chicken ordered has plenty of fried chicken pieces. Their veggie soup has more veggies than soup, which D likes. However the shrimp with garlic sauce I ordered the other day could've used a few more pieces of shrimp...I'm Just Saying. It did have plenty of onions though...*LOL*. Sometimes when calling I find myself having to repeat my order but so far everything that's been ordered has no errors. So we'll definitely be back. read more

I love chinese food and Wing Wahs is probably one of my favorites. Now they're menu isn't too innovative or fancy or anything like that. But they do have this regions best Wonton Soup!! Large wontons made of delicately thin homemade eggnoodle pasta wrapped around a pork and shrimp mixture. It's in the traditional broth with scallions and shredded bok choy. Its amazing. Dont forget the hot oil! Its fresh. Its a vibrant red, not a muted brownish red like other chinese restarunts. Add some of the hot oil to the soup and trust me, you'll forget where you are. So yea, get the Wonton Soup! It's awesome. Also it's family owned and if you go often enough, you'll be lucky enough to get to know them. And they'll get to know your "usual". read more
