Windsor Mill Tavern - Kiss of a Rose - Bars Near Me - Windsor, Colorado

It was 17 years after the first settler arrived when this area received its "unincorporated town" status. A sarcastic suggestion from a visiting pastor about how they should name the town in his name somehow gained momentum, and indeed the Town of Windsor was named after the fine Reverend Samuel Windsor in 1890. Nine years later the Windsor flour and feed mill was built and quickly became a community landmark. Fast forward 129 years to modern day Windsor, and the old mill has not only braved the years, but it also boasts survival of 158 mph tornado winds that shredded most of the building in 2008, and a suspicious fire in 2017. The small corner of the building that remains "original" is now occupied by Windsor Mill Tavern. The WMT is a great little addition to the explosive growth that Windsor continues to experience. Truthfully, they could have opened a "Ye Olde Lutefisk and Mincemeat Pie Shoppe" in this location, and the place would be packed seven nights per week. Like most folks 'round these parts we've been anxious to see WMT open up so that we could give it a try! Barry's Top 5 Observations: 1. Parking is terrible. It's right on Hwy 392 - and people don't care how hungry you are when you're trying to get across the street. Plan extra time and patience. 2. Expect a line when you arrive. As I alluded to, we're desperate for any place that will feed us...and we aren't afraid to wait forever. I'm not saying that I'd actually WAIT forever, but I'm not afraid of it. 3. The interior is nice and feels new/clean. A decent little bar area, a couple of muted, too-small TVs, and good music playing throughout, but playing softly enough that you can hear what the people at the next table are ordering (see #4). 4. You can hear the people at the table next to you because it's crowded. You could walk around the entire place on tables and chairs and never be worried about falling to the ground. A bad thing? Not if you're 5 years old and playing the "hot lava game" - but as an adult it feels a little cooped-up .... if not claustrophobic. 5. The menu quickly reminds you that you're in a tavern. They have many beers/wines, and appetizer-type offerings dominate the food options, with the Tavern Burger being "the most popular item", per our waitress - but that's probably more a result of the lack of other real food. The staff was friendly enough, and the service was pretty quick and accurate. The food is comparable to an Applebee's, meaning that you get what you order, and it tastes about like you'd expect it to taste. There were 7 in our party, and only 2 were disappointed. That's a better average than weather forecasters, but making chili and buffalo sliders isn't quite like predicting the weather. At least it shouldn't be. 10-Days Later: UPDATE.... After WMT owner, Tim Downey, saw my YELP, he sent me a reply and we spoke by phone. I'm very impressed with the way he handled the feedback and even offered some context to the few concerns that I had. My original review resulted in a 3-star rating, but I'm updating it to 4 stars to reflect the commitment, integrity and accountability that Tim demonstrated here. 2nd time getting carry out. 2nd disappointment. For starters the order we placed was ready for pick up outside at the hostess stand. Why they think it's a good idea for your food to be sitting outside in frigid temps is beyond me. Needless to say food was not even warm. The real issues are with the actual food. The portobello sandwich had such a strong balsamic flavor it was barely edible. The entire container was filled with balsamic vinegar so the bun was soggy. The burger was dried out and tasteless and the Brussels/butternut squash was horrible, because the butternut squash was not cooked throughly and was hard. I really wanted to love this place , but we won't be back. :( read more

I loved the good vibe and cozy ambiance at this trendy bar. Noise level is not too loud, but not sure if it's because it's a Sunday night. Service at the bar is quick and friendly. We wanted a snack and the pork wings did not disappoint. Served with a teriyaki like dipping sauce and two thin garnishes of pineapple. Bourbon margarita was delicious too! Prices are definitely on the higher end. Happy hour last 2 hours every day, which would be a perfect opportunity to try their other items while this place is fine tuning their food execution. read more

We sat for about an hour before our food came out and we were the first table in at 11am for brunch. We appreciate that our food was fresh and warm when it came out. The place looks super cool, but is SOOOOO packed that you constantly get run into by people entering, exiting, going to the restroom, staff delivering food/checking on their tables, etc. High price, tasty food, but extremely small portions. We both left hungry after a shared appetizer, an entree each, and 2 cocktails. We don't live in Windsor, but we are so happy to see some restaurant variety showing up for the times when we are there! The Windsor Mill Tavern is a beautiful addition and the building it's located in is stunning. We arrived about 7pm and were surprised that the only parking was around the corner, down the street. The tavern is located in the lower level on the west side of the building, not to be confused with Cacciatore on the main floor. They had a welcome station at the bottom of the stairs and the man there was kind and funny. There was no waiting. He took us inside and we quickly found a table for two. The rough rock walls and beautiful bar impress you immediately. The decor is tasteful and modern with a tip of the hat to the old that came before. Our server, Leah, was one of the sweetest, most authentic servers we have had in a long time. She mentioned that she has only recently started working there. She is a gem! We ordered the fig, Brie, pear, onion jam flat bread and found the flavors to be good. It was served on a wooden plank and was nice to look at. The only thing we might do to improve it would be to crisp it up more to add another texture element. We ordered the pork shanks and they were our favorite, Leah recommended them and she was spot on. The dipping sauce was perfectly spicy without being aggressive. There were three, so if you are on a date, prepare to throw rock, paper, scissors to get the last one, or you can share, like we did. The one miss of our meal, in my opinion, was the meatballs, they seemed bland and had an odd texture. They reminded me of a canned meatball version I had as a child. My husband agreed, but he actually liked them more when I made that reference, as it reminded him of good memories. They may have benefited from some salt, but there was none on the tables and we didn't want to bother to ask. We finished with a smooth piece of pumpkin cheesecake. In November, it is certainly recommended to eat all things pumpkin and we were glad we did try this. The drinks were good and fairly priced. Happy hour begins at 8pm, but we were not there that long. We were impressed by the beautiful bar and the drinks they were putting out. Having a section on the menu that was deemed "designated driver" is a nice touch. Unfortunately, when I ordered my first choice, they had run out of an ingredient, but the next mocktail that arrived was beautiful and delicious! This is a place we are cheering for. After 3 hrs of pickleball I decided to chill here so I'm not a beer aficionado and Stella fit the bill today. I had the ahi tuna salad which was amazing. I've had ahi salads before but the wasabi side hit it out of the ballpark as did the peanut sauce. Normally it's served only with a soy based sauce. The watermelon radish was a great add ingredient to this. I broke down and had the bourbon bread pudding. It's as good as can be. Wish it had raisins but it was really good. The service was perfect. Decided to go early (430pm) on a Friday night just after they began the new Covid measures for capacity. Busy and a long wait but we expected that. Good news is they have cocktails available while waiting. Opened the group seating area to accommodate more parties and service was amazing as always. Special of chicken pot pie was amazing. There is so much potential here. The atmosphere and décor was interesting and different. The service is good. However, if you wanted to have conversation and enjoy the food, which was pretty good for bar food, you might as well stay home. The music was overly loud which made you and everyone else have to talk louder over the music. Another couple even asked if it could be turned down a they were blown off twice. As for the food unequally different than the norm of bar food. They offered buffalo and trout dishes, cheese curds and giant fries. As for drinks that's another story as the draft Stella was as flat as the table and at $8 for 8oz another reason to stay home at those prices. By reviewing the drink menu they leaned more towards fancy drinks than beers, which was stranger yet when there is a brewery on the first floor. Finally the price on their are far different than advertised, so be ready to pay more. If they get a better manager, fix the music and prices on the beers, this place could be rated 5 stars read more

We met friends for dinner and were seated quickly. The guys ordered beers from local breweries and I had a delicious whiskey cocktail. Our meals were all excellent and our waitress was lighthearted and fun. A gentleman (I assume the manager) approached our table to ask how everything was and we asked him about the name of the whiskey that was embroidered on his shirt. We oood and ahhhd at the description and said we would have to try it. Moments later he was at our table with samples of the whiskey cream . Winning!!! Great experience. Found this restaurant by searching through yelp, read a few reviews and decided to give it a try! It was definitely worth it. A really nice restaurant to really unwind enjoy a cocktail and, have some great food at the same time. This place was really pretty cool you have to walk down the stairs upon entering before even getting to sit down inside they ask to check your ID to be above age. While walking into the restaurant every table has a good amount of social distancing provided, everything is very sanitized and clean. The restaurant it self on the inside provides a very dim lighting really gives you a breath of fresh air to just relax they have a good amount of tvs spaced at the bar, their is also a back room which is really nice with one big screen tv attached to the wall also a real cozy spot to bring a date or anybody to just have a great evening to spend with. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful since it was our first time with helping with options on the menu and drink menu. You do have to have the QR code scanner on your phone to be able to scan the menu, but that's our new livelihood these days. Overall this a really nice, clean restaurant, the food was pretty good also they brought our food out pretty quick everything was good from top bottom. My wife and I visited for the first-time last night and I have to say it was one of the best experiences ever! The evening started with a little history lesson of the tavern that was originally a grain mill built in 1899. Our server Preston was right on pint, pleasant and extremely knowledgeable. The cocktails are amazing and are truly craft cocktails. The appetizer and entree were both great. Service, food, drinks all get 5 stars from us. We will make this one of our regular spots.
