Ok...I don't understand any reviews that are not 4 or 5 for this place. First, the food is on point. If you like Carne Asada and Carnitas...amazing. The Carnitas is special. We were waited on by two servers both were awesome! The salsa so good! The green chili is amazing. Guacamole is so good! Margarita was good. The place is clean with 9 tables, so if you have a big group call ahead. Food comes fast and take out is easy to do. I wish we lived here to make this place one of our weekly staples! 100% recommended!! read more

When it comes to Street Tacos, my wife and I "go to" place is The Border Restaurant. Today, Friday Nov 21, we went to The Border for dinner. We always have great service and great experience every time we go eat here. My of course ordered her favorite Carne Asada Street Tacos with a side of rice and beans. As for me, I decided to order their Friday Prime Rib Dinner special. The prime rib meat was so huge, juicy , tender and delicious! It was cooked perfectly. Plate comes with mashed potatoes & gravy, string beans vegetables, toasted buttery bread and au jus sauce for the meat. All these side dishes were delicious. I'm blown away with how friendly the staff are here. The co-owner is outgoing and greets everyone BY NAME. I frequented this place often for lunch and dinner because my office was by Windsor Lake. It's a cozy, well-lit little restaurant where I typically order and enjoy the daily specials. Most of the time, I also order the tasty flan or sopapillas with a generous amount of honey. read more

I go out to eat a lot and thought I would try Border. At first service was friendly. I ordered a very simple dish, carne asada. What I got did not even remotely resemble steak. It was squishy hamburger like slop. I mentioned it to the "waitress" who in fact was an owner with the guy cooking. She said she would ask him. Here is what she found out. Hubby said he had a bad batch. I asked why serve me food you knew was bad? She became argumentative and irate telling me to talk to the cook.... At that point I left fearing a confrontation. By the way, the bathroom did not have hot water hooked up. Just cold. Now imagine the cook, waitress and days worth of patrons going to the bathroom, coming out and touching everything, including your food... If you want great mexican in Windsor I suggest Cancun, Let this place die. read more

Where to start. ok, I've been to "Border" restaurant 4 times now. I think I've given them a fair chance. I have to say, I love love this place. Food is fantastic, and reasonably priced. The owners are always super polite, and very accommodating. And it's normally pretty busy, but not chaotic. The young lady that was working tonight was kickin' ass! She was the only one there, she was hostess, server, and busser, and she was handlin' business! I would definitely suggest giving this spot a shot. After being ignored in the posh venues next door, it was absolutely awesome to be immediately greeted when I walked into this place! Thanks for making my day! The beer was ice cold and super refreshing after my long day. The ambiance is rustic and real and after checking out the menu I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries that was delicious and simply mouthwatering. I'm glad i got ignored at the snooty snazzy places, The Border Restaurant is authentic, locally oand worth a try for sure. when traveling to small towns, it can be hard to find a good restaurant, this would definitely be the case here. Im not fussy or picky or turn my nose up to any place that does not have a 5 star rating but I do expect one thing, that being that they serve fresh food. The food here tasted old and as it has been sitting around for awhile. When I see mash potatoes on the menu, I think about fresh, creamy, buttery and fluffy potato goodness, what I got here was hard, compact "potato" flakes that weren't reconstituted with enough water. The bread was stale and hard and the sauce was not fresh and made from a dry powdered mix also. The only good part of the food was the meat was hot and half way palatable. The waitress was friendly and fast and the prices were much more reasonable than what I was expecting, but I believe Mcdonalds would have been a better food option. read more

Trying to give them a chance as they are only a couple blocks from home. They are struggling. At times like this a place has to be perfect or they might as well close. Tried 5 times in 3 months, each time there has been so many things wrong with the food I can't honestly say anything good. Basic Mexican ingredients such as teddies beans are always old and have a different consistency each time. Stale burger buns. Extemely greasy ground beef in tacos. Completely void of flavor across the board. I have seen the cook referred to as Chef. This is a title one must earn and then continue to back up. You have to do better. Everyday. read more

The staff here is what makes this place special. The waitress had a helpful friend/surrogate mom vibe that was all types of amazing. Super sweet and the food is definitely made with love. I had the chicken chimichanga. It was good, fried crispy and packed with yummy chicken. The sauce was ok, not the best in the world. It's a solid choice if you're in the area and need a proper meal. Just ate some of these Carne Asada tacos as well as some Carnitas tacos! They were full of amazing flavor. Lots of meat, diced onions, jalapeños and tomatoes. Everything tasted fresh and was seasoned well. The only reason I'm docking one star was the ambiance. Not that it was necessarily bad, but it seemed like they had just finished a big rush and hadn't been able to clean the tables off. Things were a little dirty. But really it was a wonderful experience. The people working all seem like family and they were working so hard and were anxious to please me asking me if I'd like some water while I waited for my takeout order, also apologizing for the mess (it's comforting to know they knew it was a bit messy) I loved watching the kids, who seemed to be the children of the owner? The younger one was eating spaghetti while the older one took my order, offered her taco suggestion, and rolled silverware. If this is a family, I love this place even more. They worked together seemingly well and were very diligent. Food came out in a timely manner and it was hot!! The serving size was much more generous than I had imagined. This is hands down some of the best Mexican food I have had in America! A day of drinking did not impact the fact that the rellano were fresh...cheesy and perfect. All my drinking buddies tried to eat my food! Becky had the burrito. ..also perfect. ..perfectly big. Their green chilli tasted as close to my mother's as I have ever had; chunks of pork roast...seasoned to the right heat.. my goodness. Now...the beans...usually no big deal, right? These bad boys are smoked...like grandma used to make all her beans with ham hocks...and wow!!!!! Big E had the enchiladas. ..everything was great...even the salsa was good. I will have to make the gawdaweful drive up 25 for thus again. The food will be worth the trip alone. read more

Just moved out here and stumbled upon The Border. It's a nice little restaurant on Main Street. The decor is quaint - kind of like an old diner. However, it seems like quite a few local regulars visit which makes it feel comfy. The service was very attentive and friendly - the small size of the dining area helps with that. I had the chile relleno burrito which was awesome. It's a lot of food but it's really good. The prices were very reasonable as well. I'm sure I'll be back to try out the other menu items from the American side of the menu. Cool spot. read more

Whilst I can admit that there are lots of variables that could have occurred on the day we visited, I am so completely confused by the great ratings for this restaurant! This was hands down the most disappointing mexican food my family has ever had. Ever. I grew up in Southern California and have admittedly developed spoiled taste buds for Mexican food but this was shockingly bad. The salsa on the tables was extremely bland and so mild it tasted like a close relative of ketchup. My son ordered a children's bean and cheese burrito. What arrived was a tortilla rolled open ended with sprinkled cheese on top and whole...WHOLE pinto beans inside. Not refried beans like every other place on the planet, whole, dry pinto beans. I ordered a beef burrito with red sauce. It was ground beef, not shredded beef like I thought (but I should have asked and I admit I didn't.) The meat was horribly bland. No seasoning on it at all. Just browned ground beef straight from the frying pan. And the red sauce totally threw me because it was sweet. Not your typical ranchero style red sauce. The other 2 family members ordered something, I don't even remember what, but it matters not because none of us finished our meals. Not one. The only thing that would explain the high ratings to me are 1) it's family and friends reviewing or 2) the people in this area just haven't been exposed to great Mexican food before so they may truly not know any different. We went with friends. I heard about their Friday prime rib steak menu. They have prime rib and one steak selection which changes each week. The night we were there the steak was T-bone. The best T-bone I have had - ever. I want to go back and have the prime rib. You would never think this place is much - simple, small and not fancy at all. I did not try the Mexican food, but if their beef represents the quality of the other food, it should be good. Prices were great for the quality. Staff was down home friendly. My only disappointment was that they don't serve baked potato, only mashed which was O.K. I recommend this place and will return. read more

First time eating here. This is a no frills hole in the wall restaurant (the kind I like). The menu offers much of what you would expect from a Mexican food place. I had the huevos rancheros which was very good. The service was great and the price is very fair. Overall, if you are looking for a place to take a date, this may not be for you. A wonderful Windsor landmark and a must- visit restaurant when in town. The food is always fresh, delicious and truly home-made in style. Given the flavor/style of the food and the fact that the staff, management and owner are all caucasian, I would label this as more of a Tex-Mex/Mexican-Amercan restaurant. My last statement is NOT a complaint but rather a strong compliment as this is some of the most uniquely delicious food I've ever had and I've yet to find anything like it. With that said, the tamales and chile rellanos are the best I've ever had, even rivaling those found at 5 -star Mexican restaurants! The establishment is small and simple yet tastefully decorated and very comfortable to eat in. The whole place is extremely clean. The staff and waitresses are all older ladies who have been in town forever an are so sweet and motherly it is unbelievable. Out of the several hundred times I have eaten there or ordered carry out, I have only experienced two minor mistakes in my order and when presented with it, the staff has been so deeply apologetic and eager to make things right that I've almost felt bad for having to complain! The Border has been under the same ownership and in the same location for over 20 years-come try this unique and delicious food in a landmark restaurant! This is one of the best places in town to eat. It's locally owned and the food is fresh and great. I know that the owner feeds her grandkids and other family there so you know it's clean and fresh! I work right down the street from here and so I have eaten here a lot. Today, I spent $10 for probably the worst nachos I have ever had. I don't know if they have a new cook or what, but I will be sticking to the bacon cheeseburger. The beans, meat, and even chips had no taste whatsoever, and instead of using cheese, they give you their queso sauce. This is just a very watered down version of cheese sauce and also has no taste.
