We would eat at the original in West Long Branch very often while I was growing up. So there's definitely a nostalgic component to the food. The hotdogs are very tasty, great snap, and they will give you the doneness that you like. I prefer them not too well done. The cheese fries are amazing, and the folks working behind the counter are typically very pleasant. The only downside is the prices, which are a little high. I considered not posting this, but decided it was important for the community to be informed about the businesses they choose to support, specifically the owners. On July 3rd I attended a Long Branch Chamber of Commerce meeting in preparation for Ocean Fest on the boardwalk. During the meeting the owner of Windmill, Ralph, yelled at one of his staff members in front of the entire group in a very inappropriate and aggressive manner. When informed he wouldn't be able to have his truck placed at the event in the location he wanted, because he missed a prior meeting, he turned to his young female employee and yelled at her "WE MISSED AN IMPORTANT MEETING?!" and she apologized and seemed visibly upset, which was followed by him yelling more at her about lack of communication, and also yelled at the President of the Chamber. The entire incident was unprofessional and reprehensible. Myself and other attendees of the meeting sought the young woman out after to ask if she was okay and reassure her that is not acceptable behavior from an employer. Windmill was a loved staple for myself in the community, as I know it is for many others, but I can no longer support a business that is owned by a grown man who would yell at his employees in a public setting as he did- and much worse I'm sure he does behind closed doors. read more

If you've ever wondered what a hockey puck tastes like, stop here and have a cheeseburger. I would liken the beef patty to saw dust. The fact that I had to pay for these burgers is flat out insulting. To add even more insult to injury the cook in the kitchen got so terribly upset that I ordered a whopping five cheese burgers for me and my friends. He was so rude and unprofessional. I'm shocked at the rating this "restaurant" received. I'm convinced that this is one of those cases where nostalgia overrides taste buds. Maybe people love it because of its history, and taking a bite into that tooth chipping burger takes them right back to the days of old... I don't mean a little dirty, I mean absolutely filthy. From the sticky floors and counters to the ketchup on the tables and stools, don't even bother looking at the bathroom either. Superb chili dogs and fries. First time at this location since childhood. We've been to the Ocean Grove/Asbury Windmill several times. Although we enjoyed our food, the chili was a bit cool, the shake machine was was broken (and we needed to mention that we were due some change back when swapping for another beverage), the condiments / toppings appeared very tired, and the rest room was filthy and reeked from urine. What a shame. Perhaps the conditions were due to the recent heat wave, storm, and storm outages. We hope so. We would hate to think this was the status quo at a beloved old landmark. We stopped in this location as we had seen one earlier in the day on our joyride which turned into a trip to Belmar Beach. We were hungry so we decided to stop into this neat location that looks like a windmill. Good to note is that you can go upstairs, sit down at one of the outside tables and eat! We got the Ruben hotdogs and Cheese fries. The hotdogs were delicious and the sauce was especially delicious! I would ask for extra sauce next time and smother the hot dog with the sauce. The cheese fries were very cheesy and cooked well but very salty too salty really to enjoy too much. They also have a little Fixins bar that has relish and couple other ingredients or you can add to the hot dog I didn't try this however because I like to try the hotdog just as they make it first. This was a neat little discovery we made driving by late at night. They're open quite late, actually I think till 3 AM. Overall a couple of great hotdogs we would probably try the burgers next as I heard they are very good as well, but being a limited budget we can only try one hot dog. read more

I would say the hotdogs are their main attraction because the burger sucked. Also, at the location I was at, one of the employees had a sailors mouth and was very loud. This is one of the reviews where I'd give the food 5 stars, but something just rubbed me the wrong way about the service, so I'll give it an A-OK. The Windmill is a cute little hot dog stand on Ocean Boulevard. You can't miss it--it looks like a big red windmill in the middle of the highway. There's plenty of parking, although obviously not much seating (although word is you can request to go sit on the roof for a spectacular view). When we got to the Windmill, I checked into Yelp. To my surprise, I saw a coupon pop up. I brought my iPhone to the counter, but I immediately got a terse "we don't take that, you have to print it". I tried to explain to them how Yelp coupons work, but they treated me as if I were trying to pull a fast one on them. The amount wasn't that much, but by now I felt on principle that I should try to tell them how it worked so that in the future if they encountered other customers they would know what to do. After a while, what I assume was a manager sort of gruffly gave me the discount. He and the entire staff groused in front of us about how their management doesn't tell them these things. The whole exchange just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Whether it's the management's fault or the employee's fault, they should really not try to make the customer be the one to feel like a heel. Having said that, the hot dogs were great. They had a nice "snap" when you bit into them. There was a nice selection of condiments to the side, from chopped onions to pickles to ketchup to fresh spicy, chunky ketchup. Of course, being a purist I had just the mustard. The cheese fries were also excellent. I did notice that they were super-nice to the "regulars" who stopped by, so perhaps my experience was just a fluke. I don't get to the Shore very often, but next time I do I'll see if I can stop by again and see if their service improves. read more

Sorry but this was one of the worst meals I've ever had. Ever. No high chairs for kids. The tables upstairs and outside were disgusting and coated in old sticky condiments and who knows what. The hot dog was fair. Burgers looked better than the dogs but we didn't order those. Chili cheese fries were not good. So much chili and like no cheese. However they really earned their one star with the fries, those that werent coated in the mess were crispy and good. Cashier asked me my order three or four times.
