We saw this restaurant on the newest season of Kitchen Nightmares and wanted to stop by. Some members of my family that have lived here for years had frequented the restaurant year ago, but hadn't been back in some time so we decided to stop in. We were seated right away and we all loved the updated interior of the restaurant. Everything was very clean and upscale, and we loved the colors and subtle Jersey Shore theming. Our waitress was very kind and took our order promptly. We got two Barney hotdogs, one classic, one cheese fries and one fried zucchini sticks. Plus some sauerkraut and hot pepper relish on the side. Overall, we really liked our food. The hotdog buns were grilled, and the quality of the hotdogs were really good. I loved the ability to pile my hotdog high with extra sauerkraut and relish, which each had great flavor that paired well with the hotdog. The French fries and zucchini sticks were super crispy. The cheese fries however were more like cheese dipped fries, but the cheese was real pub type cheese. The zucchini sticks also came with horseradish sauce which I wasn't a huge fan of but everyone else at our table seemed to like. I will say, the hotdogs were a couple extra dollars compared to some other spots in the area, but you get a little higher quality ingredients and full food and bar service (which many other places don't have). Overall I really liked the quality in the food. While it wasn't a mind blowing experience, it is definitely worth a stop by. They are known for their special alcoholic beverages, craft beers, and food, They have a really good hot dog with great snap to them. The fries were room temperature McDonald's style. Burger was huge and extremely messy to bite into, did not have much flavor, and was over cooked (they ask how you want it). I will say despite the negative, it was not the WORST I've had just nothing I'm running back for. Maybe try a hot dog since that's what they're known for. A full bar and local beers complements the American-style menu and it is a spacious space to watch the game and meet people from all over the world! We met a couple visiting from Barcelona who were on their own tour of Bruce Springsteen history. We also met Tom, who is associated with the restaurant and he was fun to talk to. I came here with my pup the other day after the Easter egg hunt on the beach in Long branch. I knew that the establishment was pet friendly as I saw it on Facebook. When I arrived with my pup, we were the only ones in the bar/restaurant. The young lady behind the bar told me that we could sit wherever we wanted to. I chose to sit at a table near the bar area so that she wouldn't have to go so far to get to us. She immediately brought a water bowl for my dog, and please sit near the table on the floor. I looked over the menu and decided on a hotdog with cheese and bacon. I also ordered a side of french fries. To drink I ordered a Malibu breeze. The young lady came out with a little cup, filled with whipped cream and half of a milk bone for my pup. I thought that that was a really cute gesture. My hotdog was excellent. It had a snap to it when he bid it which is the best. There was enough bacon on it that I could share a piece with my pup. We will definitely be back when the weather is warmer, and we can sit outside.what a great place for you to be able to bring your dog inside though. Place has an old school feel with garage doors that they opened to let in the nice breeze. The bar took up most of the restaurant but it was nice. I ordered the fish and chips and they were okay. Kinda fishy and definitely needs some lemon but had a nice crisp to them. The fries were very good! 10/10 for the fries alone. Fiancé had a BBQ burger and we'd give it a solid 8/10. However, the fried pickles we ordered for appetizer weren't the best. A little soggy and needed some better sauce. I did it. I finally went to Max's. After hearing for several years that they had the best hot dog in New Jersey, a legendary hot dog at that, I had to go and have one. I hate to break it to you, but do not waste your time. The hot dog is big, a foot long, it does taste great, and it does have its natural casing, but there is not much to like beyond that. The bun is cheap, it adds absolutely no value to the hot dog. The wiener is not 100% beef, rather 80/20 beef to pork. At least they are honest about that. It is also pretty expensive considering what comes with it. A small dollop of coleslaw and four tavern chips. That is it. Quite underwhelming considering at WindMill you can get a lot more for half the price. I also ordered some side pretzels. Nothing stood out here, even though you get an order of two and they are not bad. But again, nothing is added by ordering these. I succumbed to temptation and got a milkshake. They are hand spun (I can see the milkshake mixers), that I liked. They also use natural ice cream. But these are very rich. You will need a strong stomach to finish one of these. The service is cute and friendly, carrying a bit of that Jersey Shore vibe, but here it feels more forced than genuine. The menu also appears to be appealing to too many people. Best thing to do is simplify it and just serve hot dogs and hamburgers and leave the rest out. No need to go crazy. I am not too crazy about Max's. read more

We were first there on a Friday. But the staff was friendly. I ordered the Mr Max, which is their chili and cheese dog. I wanted to sub the chips out for fries but no substitutes allowed. Which worked in my favor because these were house cut chips that were thin and crispy. Good have been great if they had been dusted with a hint of salt. I wasn't expecting a long wiener but it was very good and grilled on the stove top. The chili had beans which didn't overpower the dog and the cheese was good. We ate at Max's tonight, sat at the bar and immediately ordered a "jumbo pretzel" which never arrived, until after our incorrect food came out. We literally ordered 2 classic hot dogs & 2 fries... it doesn't seem like it was a complicated order. Just as an FYI the jumbo pretzel is actually two smaller, mediocre size pretzels. The bartender was not present most of the meal and the couple sitting next to us also received incorrect food orders. We helped ourself to ketchup, salt & pepper from another table & then tracked down another waitress to ask for silverware. Unfortunately we not be back. Went for hot dogs end of last summer, around October at noon. Had two of my grandchildren with me and they ordered cheese fries along with a hot dog. They brought out fries with a slice of yellow American cheese on top and it wasn't even melted. Hot dogs were overcooked, must have been on grill for a long time. Overall a very unappetizing lunch. We stopped in on Labor Day shortly after power returned after an unfortunate 3-hour outage and was warmly welcomed by the owner, Jen. While Max's was challenged with limited staff and influx of customers, we were grateful to be served by Denisse who was very attentive, friendly, and helpful. Thank you, Denisse. Can't lie the food here is amazing but the service was not good at all. My friends and I all went to the beach and were looking for a cute spot to grab a bite before driving home. We came with two children and they sat us in a booth tucked away. It took like 15 minutes for water to be dropped at our table. Then we got apps, and put in our food shortly after. It took around 30 minutes for our food to come out and we were not checked on until our check was abruptly dropped on our table. We were going to get dessert but then changed our minds once the check was dropped. We are all servers and can sympathize with someone having a bad day but the service was just abysmal. My chicken burger was as good, even though I don't really liked grilled chicken. The elote corn was were it went wrong. The combo of flavors tasted like canned spaghetti-io's. Max's has been a guilty pleasure of mine for years (many years); during summer I often pick a Jersey Shore beach for a random day trip and have my foodie spots for a late afternoon snack and a drink. Max's is a fav of mine for the rare combo of a quintessential Jersey Shore Hot Dog and an ice cold beer. I checked out Max's yesterday and it has gone through an extensive renovation that I wasn't expecting. Max's now has a clean, modern look and feel. The former version has its dimly lit, old school charm, but I'm certainly open to experiencing Max's in this beautifully updated space. Max's has a varied menu, but I tend to stick to what it's famous for: the foot long hot dog, cooked to a crispy skin. The toppings (sauerkraut, peppers, relish, etc) don't come out in the shareable pots as previously but I'm totally ok with that, the new way is more proper IMO. Max's still makes a delicious hot dog, no worries there. Next time, I'll probably dabble with the grilled burger and fries. They have some fancier items on the menu, but I'm sticking with the basics. We totally anticipated coming here after being disappointed in the past, but after seeing Gordon Ramsay brighten this place up and take the old nostalgic posters out and straighten out the menu, we were looking forward to it. The atmosphere is dark and dreary. The prices were considerably higher but I know it's because food costs are high. Also, no vanilla egg creams? Max's was the last place to have the wonderful vanilla egg creams or chocolate egg creams on the shore. You feel nothing of the Old Town shore atmosphere or colors of the shore, it's just like any other middle of the road place. What a shame! The secret to their success would be to go back to that . There's so little of it left at the original Jersey shore. We all remember and love that old shore feeling. That was the secret to Max's success that always beat out the windmill. This place was closed for a while due to refurbishment and recently opened up about a month ago. Max's restaurant has had a long tenure in Long Branch. Years ago they were on the boardwalk and moved to the present location in the 80s, probably due to the fire that destroyed the pier in 1987. Their hot dogs we're very large and are still gigantic today. That probably is the only similarity I can see from those days of yore. $6 for those giants are a bit steep. What happened to the bowl of sauerkraut? It now morphed into a pc cup. There are no relish ( hot & sweet )bowls on the tables, nor any extra napkins. I guess the refurbishing of the building cost a lot of money and of course we the customer are getting nickeled and dimed. Hmm, ... not giving anything back to the loyal customer. I wonder if Max is turning in his grave. I'm told the granddaughter is in now in charge. The physical plant is very upscale, but really, it's a hot dog restaurant with a bar and slow paced waitstaff.
