Salter's Deli is my absolute favorite place to get a pork roll, egg, and cheese! The sign says best on the Jersey Shore and I can definitely agree. Right when you walk in, you are greeted by the loevly individuals that work there. They have plenty of options, which is perfect. When my boyfriend comes to visit me, he always needs to get a pork roll, egg, and cheese before he leaves because it is so delicious from here! He got a sandwich and this time, I decided to get the pancakes. The sandwich was amazing as per usual and the pancakes were so amazing. They were so fluffy, which I love in panckaes. I had to do it! Slaters has been on my radar for YEARS!! I have heard so much about their world famous Pork Roll....yes Pork Roll egg and cheese sandwich. Service was quick and easy. I took my order to go although there are a few tables available to eat inside. The sandwich was $12 but it had to have at least a half pound of Pork Roll.....do I dare say too much???? I had heard good things about this deli and wanted to give it a try on my way to the beach. I called and placed an order ahead of time. The sandwich was stacked with meat, the bread was fresh, and the staff were nice. However, I can't give this place 5 stars for several reasons. I asked for mayo on the side and my friend didn't check the bag before we left. I got to the beach and there was no side of mayo so I ended up eating my meat stacked sandwich dry. Secondly, they don't have whole wheat sub rolls. I get it, it's a family owned spot that's been there for like 40 years, but we live in a world where slightly healthier options are coveted. Lastly, my friend and I both asked for extra onions on our sandwiches. That did not happen. If anything the onions were scarce; few and far in between. Would I go back? Absolutely. I came here for a breakfast sandwich on a Saturday morning, from a friend's recommendation. He raved about the massive pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich, so I had to try that. While I was waiting for my sandwich to be made, I was chatting with the staff a bit. They are awesome and friendly people. Once my sandwich was ready, I couldn't believe how amazing it looked. It was super loaded with thick pork roll. 6 slices to be exact. As soon as I had that first bite, I was in heaven. This sandwich was so delicious and flavorful. The pork pool was cooked perfectly, little bit of char to it. The egg and cheese tasted great too. Everything was so good, you did not even need to add ketchup to it. I am so disappointed in this pork roll sandwich! I have passed this place by so many times and finally tried it. I just wasted $40 on Ubereats. My porkroll cheese came with egg which I didn't order and the menu said to select a side, if you wanted, so I asked for home fries and they came on the sandwich. Whatever that wasn't a big deal. In an overcrowded market of pizza shops and delis stand the top shelf sub shop I have ever visited Slaters! Slaters is an institution and has been for so many years a can't remember. When I was a boy living in Hazlet we would ride our bikes to Slaters for a half sub that fed 4 guys. Then we rode to Highlands and rented a boat to crab and fish. The sandwich kept the group going all day. Things have never changed and Slaters remains the best sub shop anywhere. The quality meat, cheese and fresh vegetables wrapped in excellent bread cannot be beat. And it's overstuffed just like I remember as a kid. Ordered take out and while I was waiting for our sandwiches, the guy behind the counter (younger, not the older man) was yelling about January 6 was a hoax, that trump would be our president in 2024, that we should worry more about China buying real estate here than worrying about a sitting president trying to overturn an election. This is definitely 4.5 stars, not quite 5 but close! If you are driving by you blink and you'll miss it, but this is a must stop deli and breakfast sandwich shop. In my eyes, this is the go-to deli in the area. There are some others that are ok, or maybe a little higher end but Slater's is a classic. The pork roll, egg and cheese. The pics on yelp speak for themselves, it looks and tastes as good as it looks, eating a whole one is a challenge I haven't met yet. The hoagies are just as good, piled high with meat, the basic Italian is amazing, and a half will definitely be enough! Even if you order a whole it's going to last you a bit. They aren't shy with any ingredients. The bread could be a little "sturdier" but it's very good. The staff are awesome, friendly and quick. They always ask how you're doing and seem to actually care. They do charge 4% on all credit card transactions, it's a small mom and pop deli, I am happy to pay that fee if I use a card, they are up front about it and at least they take cards. Light years away from Jersey Mike's, which I don't like at all, Slater's is the best tasting, thickest and most generous sub you will find....anywhere. I should know, I used to work in a sub shop, a deli, and a pizza place. I love subs, I have since I was a kid. This is Graceland for lovers of submarine sandwiches. They use the right bread, high quality meat, and fresh toppings, all very generously stuffed in your sandwich, and in the right proportions....key to a great tasting sub. I used to buy subs every weekend from Slaters, 30 years ago, when I used to live around there. I recently moved back to this area, and they are still in business, same location, 30 years later! Their subs are as good as I remember them. If you live near Slater's, or you are headed down the shore on Route #36 to hit the beach, or go fishing, stop at Slater's and order your subs and sandwiches to go. There simply is no better place to get your submarine fix. You won't find any better - anywhere. They really load you up. Two people could easily split the small sub, and be very satisfied. How much is their "small" Super Special with ham, provolone cheese, cappicola, salami, and pepperoni? Just $8. Try Slater's.....you'll thank me. But, thank them. We stop here all the time to pick up sandwiches on the way to Sandy Hook. Service is generally pretty fast and friendly although there can be a line on busy summer weekends. The food is very good if you have the right expectations - meaning you should expect a basic, no-frills NJ deli. The bread, cheese and cold cuts are fresh and tasty but not froo-froo. They have all the basic toppings but expect iceberg lettuce; not exotic local greens. Breakfast is tasty and portions are generous. Taking off one star because their chicken salad is HORRIBLE - it looks and tastes as if they boiled a chicken in water with no other flavors for about for way too long, and then put the whole thing in a blender for about an hour until it came out as pure mush, and then added a bit of mayo.
