I had to try this place when I heard about the Pickle sandwich. I am a HUGE pickle lover so this was a must try for me. I got an Italian sub on a Pickle and my husband got a cheese steak. They have A LOT of options for sandwiches and drinks. The prices were fair. We got 2 subs and 2 drinks for $29.00. The staff was friendly, informative and quick! There was always a steady flow of customers coming in and it was a small shop. The food was great, decent portion and hit the spot. Won't change the review but I really was thrown by the pickle sub. For some reason thought it was just another name for a hoagie. Did not really think it meant a cold cuts on a pickle (not bread). Wasn't my thing. Wearing a mask made it hard to communicate and the fact I couldn't see them actually using a large pickle for bread. Great for bread subs. But a pickle sub? I am surrounded by places that sell subs. I use that term loosely because no one knows how to make a sub. I used to go to Elsie's a lot many years ago but stopped because the parking situation is awful and it's a bit of a drive for me. I was in the area today and I got a spot. They never disappoint. Finally an excellent sub. I ask for extra o&v and they actually did it. Anywhere else they never do it. Paper thin finely shredded lettuce. No huge chunks of lettuce which is so unappetizing. How on earth have I not reviewed Elsie's subs before?! Even though I live in Florida now, Elsie's is a must visit for me any time I'm in NJ. Their Turkey cranberry is just absolutely perfect. Bread is perfect, ratio of meat to toppings is perfect - even the hole in the wall look of the restaurant is perfect! They also have a great selection of chips and drinks to go with their wide menu of subs. It is a cash only place and you generally will have to park in the large paid city parking lot behind the store. But seriously - if you are anywhere near Red Bank, go out of your way to stop in at Elsie's. read more

My bf surprised me and took me here because he saw they made pickle sandwiches and I looooove pickles. Such a great, welcoming shop. I got salami and provolone on a pickle and it was the right amount of everything. The crunchiness of the pickle made it so much better! Wow! What a delicious sub. I just had it about 20 minutes ago and had to review. First off, I live about 30 minutes away and was in Monmouth county to take my dog to the vet. My mom and I were in the mood for a sandwich so I did a quick google search to find Elsie's sub shop. I called to place and order and picked it up. The lady at the store was so pleasant and asked about my New Year. My total came out to $17.37 and I only had $15 cash so I was going to put the soda I had back, but she told me just to take it. So nice. Besides from the pleasant service, the sandwich was delicious. I got a turkey and provolone sandwich (my usual), and it was 10/10. The bread was so soft and the sandwich wasn't soggy from the oil and vinegar. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area. read more

Elsie's is a classic Red Bank establishment. Everything is fresh and delicious. It's a small hole in the wall on Monmouth Street with just a few tables and it gets very busy at lunchtime. I have to put in my support. This place was a childhood favorite of my boyfriends and when he introduced me I understood ! We travel up from Barnegat to get these subs ! It's always a great experience but today was above that. It's Valentine's Day and I wanted to bring my boyfriend out favorite since he had to work. I walked in and didn't realize they had already closed for the day since it's Sunday. The owner still took my order and served me when I would have totally understood that I came in after hours. And also gave me a rose for Valentine's Day. Customer service is extremely above and beyond here plus they just make the best subs out there. They make every thing fresh & to order. I ordered a platter for a party & it was a hit!! The egg salad is made to order, the lettuce is so crispy the bread tastes like it just came out of the oven. They have just about any sandwich combo you could want, including the good old classics. Sub was well made. More than enough meat without over stuffing and making messy sandwich. I work in the area and have come here several times for subs. While the subs are very good, I've been chastised by the staff several times. I typically go out of my way to be nice to people who work in the food industry, as I know dealing with customers can be difficult. I've been told on multiple occasions by different staff that I am "too happy". As though this is some kind of bad thing. I've let this slide, as it's not terribly insulting. I typically get plain subs to avoid the toppings from spoiling as I save half the sandwich for the next day. When I requested this plain sub, I was asked if I would like them to "cut the crusts off, and cut the bread into little triangles". I did not find this funny, and actually found it to be condescending and rude. I feel as though I've received enough insulting comments from the staff here and will not be returning. If you want a sub from here, I'd recommend being rude, as that appears to be more their speed, and be ready to be chastised for what kind of sub you order. read more
