Wind Thin Tree Service is the best. Their workers know their trees, and the company is extremely reasonable and responsible. We've been using Wind Thin for the past several years. We usually call around to get a couple of bids. Wind Thin, by far, is the most reliable. We've made calls to companies that make appointments and then don't show up, and we've had reps from companies come out and give us a verbal bid but then not follow up with an email or anything on paper. You can call Wind Thin and their rep, Adrian, comes out at the agreed upon time, and within a day the office sends you a bid. Totally professional. And their bids come in at a fair price. Our most recent job involved removing a large limb off a neighbor's maple that jutted out over our garage. Wind Thin set a date, called the day before to remind us about the time when the job would be done, and JC and James got here exactly when promised. The pair did a thoroughly professional job including a tidy clean-up. Both JC and James were friendly and courteous and respectful of our property, and they knew what they were doing. I never write reviews, but I've never been so thrilled with a service. I had extensive mayhem with my giant trees during the January storm. I called for a consult for this season to determine what might be at risk. Adrian came out, walked the property, didn't oversell, explained everything, and gave me a quote that made me cheer. Today the crew came and were just as kind and personable and were on it. Removed two trees, trimmed and cabled another, cleaned up thoroughly and were in and out quickly. Neatly stacked the wood from the large tree removed. Even better, they agreed as a courtesy to put the remaining pile of branches from the storm thru the wood chipper. I asked them to be on the lookout for a tiny bracelet that might have been lost in the pile--a needle in a haystack. They took that request seriously and actually found the bracelet. Hire them! We used Wind Thin to prune back an overgrown walnut tree on our property. The canopy had been covering the roof of our garage and part of our house. The tree had become so heavy with nuts that the weight had actually broken a limb. Our entire backyard was littered with debris and overrun by squirrels. Wind Thin came and did a tree pruning service, and now our walnut tree is light and airy! We can actually sit in our backyard without getting pelted by golfball-sized walnut fruit. The crew of 7 did an excellent job. They were fast, professional, and the tree looks beautiful! Plus, their estimate was slightly lower than the other 2 I received. Did a great job. I took 5 bids. They were reasonable, not the cheapest but the cheep ones didn't pay workers comp insurance so I picked them. I had two 115 foot tall doug firs right by power lines. They did the job in 4.5 hours. The stump grinder showed up the next day. I went out and spoke to the workers and they were all friendly, respectable and professional. While I didn't shop around to get multiple estimates from different tree services, I was very happy with Wind Thin. Our home's previous owners used them, and since they're relatively in the neighborhood and were recommended on Nextdoor, we decided just to go with them. We had two jobs: removal of a dead tree in our alley, and maintenance and pruning of a large old street tree out front. They were able to get both jobs done easily in a day (I wasn't even home), and the crew did an excellent clean-up job. You wouldn't know any work had been done except for some sawdust in the grass and the missing branches on the tree! Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. While other reviewers have noted issues with communication, I didn't run into much of that. There was a delay in getting my original estimate, and not everyone was always on the same page about who was getting permits from the city for the work (me or Wind Thin). However, Peggy was always very communicative by phone, and quick to call me back with answers to questions. Given how great our street tree looks, how clean the yard is, and how easy it was to get the job scheduled and completed, I'll definitely be using Wind Thin for future arborist needs! read more

I do hope this review isn't screened into oblivion because while I did not PAY for the tree removal, I did, however BENEFIT from my neighbor picking Wind Thin to do so. And the LARGE Pine in question was a leaner. Listing hard to starboard directly towards MY HOUSE but belonged to a neighbor. And I was home when Wind Thin did two different jobs while my neighbors were NOT. So I hereby claim the right of review... count that as TWO reviews one across the street, and one two doors away. I noticed from the other reviews that "grumpy neighbors" seem to be quite a concern when commissioning a tree service. Well, this is the second time Wind Thin recently did large tree removals for neighbors on my street and they seem to have a franchise going in my neighborhood. And no grumpy neighbors on our street...well, maybe...but not because of these guys. In a nutshell, the crew was fast, efficient, worked around power lines and cleaned up after the heavy lifting (I mean REALLY HEAVY lifting) was done. I should explain this was a hazardous, large dead pine ...probably killed by utility workers much earlier. At any rate, my house and car in the driveway are as much relieved as am I. And while they were there, they thinned out several other trees and chipped up the trimmed limbs. So NEXT time I need to remove a tree threatening MY neighbor's house....I'm using these guys. Maybe it'd be a good idea BEFORE any of mine (or YOURS) get leaning quite so much. read more

I've worked with Wind Thin for 5+ years. They consistently give me fantastic service at a very reasonable price. I bought a property in NE Pdx with a lot of ancient, dying trees, so they've been extremely helpful for me. Last year they took down an 80 year-old apple tree that was at least 2' in diameter. It had fallen on my neighbor's garage in a storm, and they removed it without any causing any damage whatsoever. When they were done, I had a neat, empty spot where this monster had been. So the 1st time around i gave them 4 stars and they earned them. This time only 2 stars and here's why. I called because I had 2 trees in need of trimming and broken branches now hanging on my neighbors wires. I call and set up an appt for the bid. After waiting for an hour after the scheduled time I call and find out it was written on a different day. Ok, stuff happens. I was told I would be given $25 off the bid if I used their service. So their estimator comes out we discuss what I want done and he tells me I should have the estimate in my email by the end of the day, or next. A week later (I waited in case he lost my email and sent it by pigeon) I call up to find out where my bid is, Peggy is always very polite and says she will try to find out what happened. Another week goes by, I've sent an email as well and....not a word. No follow up, nada. Not even a month later. I understand customer service well, and this was not service at all. P.S. I guess if you can actually get an estimate and then get someone to call you back after the estimate to schedule the work, maybe the work would be 5 star worthy? I wouldn't know because after the person came out to do an estimate, it took 2 calls to the office and one to the estimator to finally get a written estimate a week later. It's now a week after that, and I still haven't heard back after requesting that part of the work to be done. I'll be going with another more professional company who actually sent an estimate the same day and scheduled the work as requested even though their bid was higher. Wind Thin Tree Service exceeded our expectations. Last fall we had a very complicated removal of a 90' Oak tree from an urban residential area in the back of an elevated lot. The tree was damaged in the September wind storm, and it effected/overhung 4 houses/properties. We consulted with numerous companies as this was a very large project. They were not the cheapest bid, but they had the most detailed removal plan, and they delivered. The job included 5 full days of complicated work with an extremely professional (and tidy!) crew plus the owner Curtis, a very large crane and truck loads of tree removed (plus stump grinding). Unbelievable work ethic from dawn to dusk. Our neighbors even marveled at the speed and quality of the removal given the scope and complexity of the job. We highly recommend Wind Thin. read more

Won't use again. Had to take day off work so they could come back a second time to do the work correctly. Neighbors said first time they were there 30 minutes and did very little trimming Then second time they only had 1 of 2 pages of work order...argued about trimming Rhodie and maple tree... We had three huge fir trees removed in a very tiny space and the crew was out of this world. They worked so hard from the time they started to when they left. Everyone was super conscientious and had incredible work ethic and integrity. They were truly wonderful to work with and I cannot recommend them more highly. At the recommendation of a neighbor, who raved about them, we accepted their bid without any competitive bids. We had them take down a 25 foot Cypress that had branches intertwined in overhead telephone, cable, and power lines. Additionally, they took out a smaller tree and stump grinded 3 trunks. We watched them for the entirety and were very impressed with the strategic nature of their cutting. At no time did I have any concerns with the wires. Their stump grinding was well done as well. They were courteous, cleaned up after themselves, were fast, and overall did an outstanding job. Based on what we heard, they are middle of the road when it comes to pricing. read more

I used Wind Thin over a decade ago when Curtis Falbo still owned and was running it. They were fantastic, quick, and so polite. I called them again recently for a trim job on a Magnolia I had in my yard. Curtis' nephew, J.C., showed up, as promised, was very polite, and said he could get the job done that evening if I would take out cash to pay them since it was such a small job. I agreed. They never showed up that evening. I called the office and spoke with Peggy, who said she would contact him and I never heard back. I called back again the next day and got his number and left him a message on his cell. Never heard back. I texted, same story. A few days later, after I returned from a business trip, I called again was told that J.C. was fired due to scheduling issues and promises he made without checking with the office. They wanted to make it up to me. I agreed and Peggy said she would get back to me. She did and offered days I was again, out of town. I said let's try the next week. I called the next week and said I was available on the Friday. She said Adrian would call me. I never heard. I called the next day and she said she had just gotten off the phone with him and he was going to call me. Never heard back. I called the next evening and left a very frustrated message, as they had stopped answering the phone by now. I received an immediate call from Adrian. He talked over me, said they didn't like to do jobs after work and when I said that this was from a job J.C. promised and they were rescheduling he said "well, that's J.C.'s problem". I said "no, that's Wind Thin's problem, as he was your employee." He hung up on me. I was very angry and called Peggy and told her where they cut put their crappy service and that I wouldn't take it now if it were free. I called and told Adrian the same thing. I contacted Curtis and let him know, as well, but I guess no one cares anymore. Wind Thin is horrible and I wouldn't give them a dime. I've alerted everyone I've ever referred to them to toss their number in the trash, because that's where they belong. read more

A wicked wind storm that blew through Portland on a Friday afternoon damaged a 60 year old cedar adjacent to our house, leaving it swaying perilously above our upstairs bedroom. The following Monday, our go-to arborist, skittish to send his crew up our compromised cedar, referred us to Curt at Wind Thin Tree Service, who visited us later that afternoon. Curt and his crew returned the following Friday with an impressive array of assets and skill, and proceeded to dismantle the tree by hoisting sections up and over our house via a 40-ton truck crane positioned on our street 75 feet from the tree's location. The process was remarkably efficient, both in time and cost ($2,490), with the tree and every scrap of debris gone before noon that day. Rest assured we'll be keeping WindThin's contact info on file! Wind Thin did a wonderful job on our trees. We did our due diligence and got 3 bids for the work we wanted to have done. Wind Thin was the cheapest bid by far. However, this isn't a you get what you pay for type of scenario. Wind Thin was worth every penny and then some. Mathew came out right away to give us a bid and Peggy got us scheduled quickly for our trimming. On the scheduled date a team of 12-15 guys showed up and set about removing the deadwood and ivy from all our trees. They worked on about 10 trees. We will certainly be using Wind Thin again in the future. But that will be awhile because they did such a great job that they said our trees won't need trimming for at least 10 years. read more

Amazing service. We have 4 four mature pine/fir trees needing periodic pruning. Although communication was initially vague, the response was as scheduled. What surprised me, though, was the service itself: I think I counted. 6-7 workers swarming my backyard. They gave each other suggestions, tools, and a lot of trust/respect. I am so happy I went with Wind Thin. I called to get bid to cut my neighbor's out of control 45ft laurel hedge back to the property line. I talked to Peggy who had someone come out the next morning and give me a bid to do the job. It was very reasonable and everyone was very professional so I decided to call and schedule them to come out and cut the hedge back. They had a crew out the next day and were done in under two hours. After multiple bids, my landlord went with Wind Thin to take a tree down last week and I am really happy with their work. Their bid was the lowest, and we saved some money by not bringing a wood chipper in for the limbs. I just had them quarter the chucks of wood and I'll keep them dry to use for fire in the winter time. The tree was an invasive species, surrounded by built-into-the-ground wooden housing, about 6 stories tall and several limbs had fallen in storms-on the roof, on my fence, and hitting another tree splitting it in 3. There was a lot of work to do and many things could get damaged. I arrived home from work on Tuesday with about 7 guys in my yard, the tree gone, fast and accurate with no damage to any property. They came by the next day to grind the stump all the way down, and left a pile of mulch to spread along the yard. They quartered the wood chucks for me and left them off to the side like I asked. I would definitely use them again for any tree service I need in the Portland area. read more

I haven't given up on them yet but I have contacted another tree service just in case the frustration factor finally reaches a peak. The only reason I hang in there is that the rep I talked with seemed to really know trees and they have a good reputation. They're up to three stars now instead of one. I hope they can get to five. These guys are great. We had a LOT of work to do on our yard to reveal our views (we're selling our house). Terrific quality work; on time, on budget. Work crew was terrific with communication and clean up. We wanted to save some of the large dead branches to use as firewood and once they learned this they cut it up and stacked it for me. I'm really conflicted about giving Wind Thin a bad review - someone from that service came out a few years ago when I was worried about one of my trees, gave me great advice, and didn't charge me at all. So when the huge pine tree next to my house started looking sick, I remembered Wind Thin. JC was able to come out within a day and told me he believed the tree was dying; as I was anxious to explore any options to save it, he said he would have an arborist come to the house to look at the tree and see if there were any options to save it. He really talked this arborist up. I never heard from JC again - I texted him and left several messages at the office and nobody called to schedule an arborist to come to look at my sick tree. The best I got was someone calling, two days ago (and two weeks after JC was here), to let me know that JC would definitely call me the next day - but he didn't call. Given that weeks have passed now and the tree just looks sicker and sicker and if anything can be done to save it we may be losing a narrow window to do so, I have moved on to another tree service. It's pretty disappointing, as I expressed to JC how much this tree means to me - it's prominent on my property and really beautiful - and how I would really do anything to save it and he seem sympathetic. Very bad customer service, and very disappointed in a service I had been previously very enthusiastic about. I'm only giving them two stars because of the experience I had a few years ago... read more
