Fantastic crew of very efficient workers, and friendly. So happy with the pruning of this very out of control tree. Thank you so much!

A team of five from Honl tackled the trimming and pruning of a tall Tree of Heaven spreading too widely, with efficiency and care. Teamwork supported the amazing skills of a climbing specialist, enabling the surgical removal of limbs without damage to other plants or structure below. The tree was left healthy and still shapely, and the yard below left totally clean of debris. Communication was good from start to finish in this project, and the service provided for a very reasonable price. Five stars is not enough for the outstanding job done; definitely recommended. read more

I had two trees pruned, dead branches removed and both trees shortened by 5 feet. Work was done with two people and all the trimmings were picked up and put in a machine that ground them up and blew them into a truck. I would highly recommend them. read more

Part of a very old apple tree in my yard died recently, including a heavy branch hanging over the roof of my neighbors' garage. I got a referral to Honyl from Linda Rossi, an experienced Realtor in Portland, Oregon, who told me that she had successfully used Honl's services many times in her business. Chad Honl himself came out promptly to size the situation up. I found him professional, knowledgeable, and easy to deal with--and so I hired him on the spot. For me, competence is the most important consideration in taking down part or all of a tree. His crew came out a few days later with a wood chipper. They quickly cut back my tree and saved it, at least for a few more years. The 3 person crew was pleasant to deal with, worked quickly, and did a fast clean-up. After this excellent experience, I will be calling Honl Tree Care in the future if I need tree service. read more

Excellent communication. Clear advice and given the winter time weather that they had to work around a prompt and tidy outcome. Plus both very pleasant office staff and field personnel that helped navigate us through the City of Portland's damaged tree removal and replacement process. read more

They were on time, professional and trimmed tree perfectly. Cleaned up as he went. I wanted a "bonsai" like cut. I wasn't sure if my request was clear enough. But when I rounded the corner and saw my tree, it was perfect. I'm so happy. read more

Honl Tree Care has done several jobs for me, including pruning an Italian plum tree in my yard and on three street trees: a crab apple, a smoke tree, and a Japanese snowbell. In addition they removed an invasive wild cherry tree, a holly tree growing up through my azaleas, and oak trees growing up through my azaleas, courtesy of squirrels planting acorns that they get in a nearby park. Those " volunteer" trees in my azaleas had been impossible for me to even get to, much less remove, but Honl was successful and didn't even hurt my azaleas! They did a wonderful job pruning all the other trees, even taking care to remove a low-hanging yellow jacket nest in the crab apple that I hadn't even realized was there. When I had questions about the work done, the owner, Chad Honl, came out quickly to make sure my concerns were addressed. He and the arborists who did the work were all friendly, helpful, and competent. I think the price was fair, and I would definitely go to Honl Tree Care again when I need work done on my trees. read more

So impressed with the expert advice received and the care given, even when they were very busy due to the massive storm we had. I would wholeheartedly recommend this company to anyone! read more

In November I wrote a bad review for this company because they did not show up for an appointment. Since then, the HONL owner/manager called me, explained what had happened, and came out today to give me a quote. He also offered me a discount in compensation for the missed appointments. They even had an appointment open today, and as they were less expensive than another quote I had since received, I had them come out today. They showed up immediately and did a great job at a good price. I'm now happy and giving them 5 stars. They also gave me good advice on how to care for the tree during drought. Sorry but I can't figure out how to change my previous 1 star review. read more

Really recommend these people! They were easy to work and communicate with! Prompt, efficient and very friendly. We will certainly use them regularly for our tree maintenance and recommend them to our friends. read more

Excellent work on my front yard corkscrew willow tree. They have been my tree care company for years, trimming backyard trees, both deciduous and evergreen, as well as rhododendrons. The work is always great! read more

The team at Honl was kind and thorough from start to finish. The initial site visit was comprehensive and informative--even including feedback on newly planted saplings that weren't part of the quote--and the pruning of our 100 year old pear tree was handled thoughtfully, respectfully, and with great care. Great communication, negotiation, and clean up, and kindness about all our concerns and requests. read more

Honest people doing great work! Mark came out to give us an estimate to prune the fruit trees in our yard. We have already done some pruning but we weren't confident with our ability because we just started learning. So we wanted some professional help. We were very much ready to pay Honl to do the work, because our friends speak highly of them. However, instead of just taking our easy money, Mark recommended not doing any pruning for now and just see how well the trees fruit this season and make a decision based on more observation. He even gave us a few simple pruning tips so that we can keep pruning ourselves in the future. All of these were free. It's so refreshing to work with a business that truly puts customers' interests first. We will definitely seek them out again in the future. read more

We have found our forever tree company. We hired them to trim trees around our house on a hill. Chad is super knowledgeable. His team is competent and thoughtful. Our only complaint is that we couldn't pay them online. You gotta mail a check or call in your card. read more

Excellent work, competitive prices, highly knowledgeable and very competent. Chad and his team are a pleasure to work with. We will definitely continue to use them for all our tree-related work. read more

From start to finish this was a WONDERFUL experience. From my first email with Sierra, to getting someone to the house to give a quote, to scheduling a day's worth of pruning 3 fruit trees, a street tree and bamboo on our property, Honl was a dream. They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and were generally a joy to have around. So glad to have found them, as now I won't go anywhere else! read more

My wife and I purchased a house that has a HUGE western red cedar that had not been properly cared for for decades. We knew it needed immediate care, and we were afraid that it may have to come down. That possibility was terrifying due to the cost. We called Honl, and they got on it right away. They cleaned it up, really taking the time to evaluate its health and setting it up for success. The tree was healthy enough to be saved, but it was also right at the tipping point of being too far gone. In a year or two at most it would have been too misshapen and weak to survive on the long term. Thank God for you, Honl Tree Care. The other thing I appreciated about them was not only were the staff friendly, but they also didn't talk down to me as they explained stuff to me, a novice. Also, these people freakin' LOVE trees! You should have seen their faces light up when they saw my tree. You want your large trees to get butchered? Call a landscaper. Want your large trees to be healthy? Call real arborists. Call Honl! read more

Chad came to my house for free estimation on tree pruning. He was punctual and professional. Honest and kind, he did not upsell his services. He told me my yard did not need any major work and only recommended to have dead branches removed from couple big trees. I am waiting to see the final estimate. Writing this post because I was impressed with the first impression. Thank you read more

Best experience we've had with tree care services. We've used Honl Tree Care on at least six occasions. They helped us out when a wind storm blew down our hundred year old walnut, cutting the tree into manageable chunks that could be carried way then clearing up the debris. They came again to assess damage to other trees caused by that fallen walnut, pruning and saving what could be saved. Later we asked them to remove a huge cedar that was old and unstable. They spent several days consulting with us, "dusting the tree" (removing branches) and clearing a work area before beginning the dangerous task of bringing down that 80-foot beauty. And then later they planted two new five or six foot tall trees for us to replace the trees that had come down. We have also used them for basic tree maintenance in our front and back yards. Always they have been friendly, efficient, respectful, knowledgeable, courteous. Chad Honl, the owner and a true gentleman, sets the tone. The experience for us has always been enjoyable. We feel we have been well-informed and our needs and wishes respected. There have been several tree care service companies we have tried. Honl Tree Care is simply the best. read more

This is the best crew for cutting and managing trees and the most responsive office staff to communicate scheduling and follow up on the day of service. I highly recommend Honl for tree care- I have lots of trees, slopes along the road bed and years of stewarding this land. They care about the trees and are willing to take the time to educate and work with the homeowner. Thank you for doing a great job on the land as well as coordinating with PGE Foresters and doing the best and safe work possible. read more

Honl is professional, honest, reliable and charges reasonable amounts for removing and trimming trees. I've used them several times and have always been pleased with their work. read more

This is a reputable company--they arrived for quote as scheduled--the quote was reasonable--they set a date and then later in the week they had a cancelation so fit me in even earlier than planned--they did a great job--the neighbor was very pleased--they left the place immaculate--the tree is happy--much heavy weight removed--then I got the bill and it was $800.00 less than quoted--ya gotta love good people. They are my tree people for life!!!! read more

A few years ago, Honl did a great job pruning the huge sycamore tree in our backyard. So, when we need more extensive work on the same tree, we didn't hesitate to hire Honl. From start to finish, everyone on the job did exactly what we were hoping for. The tree was artfully pruned, with an eye toward future health. read more

Our beautiful Golden Chain (Laburnum) bit the dust and had to be removed. So sad! I called Chad from Honi Tree Care 503-200-0709. If anyone out there needs tree service, I highly recommend this company. I called them yesterday and Chad came out the same day to give an estimate. The tree was removed today. The crew was totally professional, great to work with and cleaned up their mess. I asked for a 10% discount for cash and they gave it to me. read more

Chad Honl and his team have helped us with do several tree projects. He removed a large, old, unhealthy tree from our small SE Portland lot. He planted 3 trees for us including a beautiful Sycamore. Plus, he pruned our large Western Cedar. Chad and his team did each project with care for our property and an obvious affection for the trees he planted and pruned. This is the crew to use to tree care in SE Portland! read more

Disclaimer: I did not have the fortune of actually receiving their services. That being said - I contacted (who I think was) Chad just before the end of their business hours on a Saturday. I told him my parents had a tree leaning pretty heavily in their back yard and they were afraid of it falling close to either their house or deck. He was very cool to hear me out and ask for detailed pictures of the tree. I messaged the pictures to him and he was ready to get a team together either that night or in the morning, clear about it being an overtime situation for his crew, but more than happy to help should it be an emergency. After talking it over with my folks, they said that the thought it could wait till Monday morning. I made the appointment with (Chad) for first thing Monday morning and felt really good about my interaction with him and his willingness to help me out, now well after business hours. 20 minutes later I get a text from my parents that the tree had fallen!! Thankfully, it landed in another tree that kept it from hitting the deck. So after all of the gracious back and forth with Honl, I had to cancel the appointment. This review is a thank you, and acknowledgment to Honl for their being, quite literally, ready, willing and able to help us out in a crunch. read more

Did a lively job pruning back our cypress which had grown far larger than anticipated!

These guys removed a trunk off of a mature cherry tree that was leaning on our neighbor's garage. The work was contracted by my neighbor, but I had a fair amount of contact with the owner and his crew. It seems like arborists, like dentists and mechanics, are targets of my cynical attitude. I haven't met one yet who didn't advise me to take out more wood than I wanted. I'm sure it's a way to make money in a business that many don't really have a firm grasp of, but it always makes me wary. However.....this job went pretty well. They left a few longer sections that I hope to get sawn into lumber, the area was clean and the logs neatly stacked. The garage didn't have a huge, log-shaped hole in it when they were done, which is a plus in my book. I almost left off a star due to an overcharge on taking out a smaller branch on a nearby tree. While I felt initially the charge was really high, I talked to the owner and he agreed to reduce the price. He did emphasis that he pays his guys above scale wages and harps on safety, which costs more. His response was timely and courteous, so it worked out for both of us (hopefully) in the end. read more

A friend - professional botanist - recommended Chad Honl to me. He followed four previous bids, two of which were unbelievable (but I don't like to leave poor reviews on Yelp), and his was fairest overall - most comprehensive, less nickel and diming, most customer oriented. Chad's team did wonders in two hours, yet they left with one misunderstanding. When I contacted Chad about that, he was immediately accountable, offered to make amends, but I said that I wanted them to complete the job. They returned exactly when they were scheduled to do so. Chad and team treated my two giant cedars with great respect, and walked me through new territory for me. I recommend Honl Tree Care highly. read more

I found Honl Tree Care through a flier they dropped in my mailbox and their timing was good because I needed a large fig tree pruned back in my back yard. They were very prompt about returning my call and coming by to give me a quote. When Chad came by to do the actual pruning I found him to be very professional and personable. And he gave me a final charge that was less than the original quote. Overall I was completely happy with the professionalism and personal service and would recommend them to anyone. Chad is a top notch professional arborist as well as his crew. They performed the work in a timely manner and left my yard free of all debris. Also there chipper is amazing to watch. Thanks Chad and crew for all of your great work. I recommend all to Honal tree care. -Louis Lee read more

I'm currently renovating my house by southeast. I called Honl to help get an estimate for a trim on our tree in the front the house. They sent mark over to give an estimate, but instead he just helped trim the tree for free! He told us that a major trim was not necessary, and happily trimmed it without any cost. Mark is truly honest about what is needed for landscaping of tree designs, definitely call and make an appointment with him!! To the owner of Honl: thank you for sending mark over to help us, he was nice and was super helpful. I will definitely be coming back to Honl for my future houses, thanks to mark. read more

They were very organized. Communicated changes very thoroughly. The crew was very nice and didn't leave behind a huge mess (which I was completely expecting). Lastly, the invoicing processes was online and super easy to process. These guys have had to come back to my property 2 times on two different properties to fix their sub par work. The first time was a $2000 job and they sent a crew out to fix the problem admitting they didn't do the job right. So I gave them another shot at a different property and they did a good job. Two years later I called them to trim back an Asian pear tree that was overgrown and producing too much fruit and growing over three neighbors yards. I came home and it looked like they didn't do anything so asked them to send someone out again. The crew that came out simply cut the two largest limbs off the tree and called it good. This was the spring of 2020. I get upset with them every time I look at this tree and the mess they left behind. Overhanging limbs on their own with no thought to symmetry of the tree on two sides and two big gaping holes and an obvious hack job. I'm guessing this was a new employee. I paid them and let them know I was unhappy and said no need to contact me as I won't be using your servers anymore. My advice unless you're onsite to guide this team don't bother! read more

The upfront communication was great, and the work done on the trees was nice. However, they damaged several plants located by the trees while dragging branches. We called to let them know and all we got was "sorry about that". That was very disappointing, I would not hire them again. 8/20 Update: The company contacted me and offered to reimburse the plants that got damaged. While I found the first interaction disappointing, they really made up for it by following through and doing the right thing. read more
