He was still in the driveway sitting in his truck. He increased the bid by 1,000 dollars, sent it then left. What changed in those precious 10 feet?! I am more than happy to write a review for Rich's Tree Service. They were on time, the workers were very polite and friendly, they even chipped up limbs that I had previously piled in a burn pile. The work area was cleaner when they left then when they came. If the previous tree company would have done such a good job 2 years ago, I would not have had to do it over again. Another amazing job by Rich's Tree Service. Crew leader Jamie was an amazing chainsaw master up in the tangle of our 45-foot Honeylocust and Riley and Robert on his team did an excellent job down on the ground making sure that the landscape below was left in great shape and the debris was completely cleaned up and hauled away. Complicating the work was a raft of powerline just behind the tree and a steep set of steps down to the alley, where their chipper was located. The crew did a great job taking both the Honeylocust and a 35-foot magnolia down in just half a day, with great care taken to protect our back yard. They were here on time, worked face and SAFE and were a pleasure to work with. They even put up with a photo-bug taking a bunch of photos of them at work...! My next door neighbor had this tree service trim some of my Doug Fir limbs that were growing over the property line. He never discussed it with me and the tree company never talked to me. I was chilling on my patio when one of their workers comes into my yard over the fence without asking. Seems pretty unprofessional. Just knock on my door and ask for access to the gate. I've cut a lot of firewood and will probably cut more before I die. There is a big difference between some who cuts firewood and an arborist. Myself, I walk out into nature with a blood alcohol content comfortably over the legal driving limit, look at a dead tree, and fire up my trusty stihl (Husqvarna should have stuck to making sewing machines). Then not only in an incorrect but in a very unsafe manner, fell the tree, limb it, buck it, and split it. I realized the trees I must maintain were not "maintained," and chanticleer pear trees are terrible firewood. Plus, the city of Happy Valley goes super Karen when you go cutting trees down all willy-nilly without a permit or some bullshit our founding fathers would laugh at. I called Rich's tree service, and within 5 minutes, the quote dude gave me a great price to prune seven trees. I thought I would wake up to the sounds of a properly running stihl. Instead, the arborist was in the tree with a pruning knife working silently like some type of fucking wood ninja. Pruning trees is an art, and this guy could show Bob Ross a thing or 2. Unlike when I cut wood, there's a big mess, and thank god I'm usually in the middle of nowhere, so no one gives a fuck. These guys left the area better than they found it. Another once very good business swirls around the bowl..... I gather there is a new staff there now and perhaps new owners. Glen, their estimator who was really great retired. The new guy seems ok but his quote was 2X the next highest quote I received. started out as 3X higher! The office staff is something else and not in a good way. Disinterested and unaccommodating would aptly describe my experience with them. "That's not the way we usually do things" and "that's not our usual practice" seems to be their standard refrain now. It was hugely difficult to get them to grasp that I am hearing disabled and don't have a phone and can't use a phone. The office people seem to be fixated on needing to have all communications happen using 100 year old telephone technology. So much for adhering to federal ADA legislation at this business. I hope they remember their treatment of others when they are no longer children and have their own old age health issues. By the time I finally got them to come out and give me a quote I was already pretty much fed up with them. Definitely not the superior business that they used to be. I requested (and was denied) e-mail access to the owner so we could chat al little about all of this but the sky-high quote ultimately made the need for that conversation moot. Found what looks like a superior arbor management company thanks to Yelp at half the price Rich's quoted. Sorry to have to amend my previous review but this business has gone seriously down hill since I last engaged them. read more

If you need service outside of East Portland, best hire someone else. They'll bid a job, schedule it and then cancel over and over because of one reason or another. I'm sure if you're a corporate account, they probably take care of you. But a homeowner that just needs limbs trimmed gets treated like garbage. I got several quotes for a very large tree in my backyard that had substantial ice storm damage from the last few years. Rick's was the best price of anyone and the arbor who gave the initial estimate was very knowledgeable. The crew who came out did exactly what they were hired to do, but we're not very careful with the branches they were cutting. One very large branch hit my fence and broke a light on a post (I'm luckily it didn't take out more). Another branch took out my internet line and pulled it from the pole. I feel like this was quite avoidable. I guess I'm lucky they didn't take out my power line too. Basically the very thing I was trying to avoid this winter happened. It took over 24 hours to get a new internet line run -- which impacted my ability to work for the rest of that day and all is the next. I had to be the one to tell their office about the broken light and internet, and luckily the light was cheap and it came off my bill. But they didn't provide any compensation for my inconvenience over the internet outage. Basically this was the most money I've ever paid to inconvenience myself. Maybe this was a risk I should have expected, but I'll go with another company next time. They did do a good job with my trees and cleaned up the debris. read more

We had a two-story leaner, so we contacted RTS and knew they were working through a backlog. The onsite inspection, estimate and scheduling were very prompt and reasonable, especially given the workload demands. Rich's Tree Service is a great business. I called them for a bid and they literally showed up the next day with a bid that was very reasonable for the amount of work required. I had about ten 25ft high hemlock's topped and thinned, and 3 100ft plus high oak trees they removed dead heads from, thinned and raised the canopy on 8 other trees. They did it all in 1 day and left the place looking great. The crew was super communicative, friendly and regularly checked with me to see that I was happy with the work as they went along. Rich came out the day after I called to request an estimate, and he won me over on his first visit. He was extremely personable and thorough as he educated me on the needs of my trees and made his recommendations for their care. I had a few other companies bid for the job but they didn't give me the same confident feeling. The office staff are friendly, responsive and professional from scheduling through their follow-up call. Even the crew who come out are always a pleasure to work with, and they definitely know their trade as skilled arborists. And while I am a stickler for details, I am always impressed and pleased with the end results. They each take great pride in their work and it shows. One of the first projects that I hired Rich's for, was to remove and grind the stumps of a few problematic trees. They did all this while I was at work which speaks to my confidence in them. And except for the trees being gone, there was no sign that anyone had been there. Their cleanup is always impeccable. I also have two beautiful cherry trees (affectionately named Ethel and Myrtle) that were probably planted in 1951 when my home was built. They are wonderful examples of their species and they put on quite a show every spring. Neighbors stop and take in their splendor while kids beam with delight as the pink petals gently fall and drift like snow. I called and one of their estimators, Luke Miller came out immediately and gave me a bid for trimming fir trees which overhang my home which are my neighbors' trees. The bid seemed high and likely it was but the workmanship by the men made me accept it. The men who came out were on time, started on the work at the time agreed to and finished when they estimated they would. They also did a couple of "Extra" things which made the job look and will be better than expected for a long time. They may not be the cheapest, but their work is the best. I purchased a house that was built in 1995 and it had beautiful landscaping, but had some much needed maintenance. I contacted Rich's Tree Service and Alex responded and came to the house to take a look at what I was needing done. I had a dead rhododendron that needed to be cut down, some trees that needed thinning and pruning, and two hedges that needed topping off and cleaned up. This was my first hire of a professional tree service so shame on me. But I feel like this was classic bait and switch. The person who comes over and you talk with does not come over to the job site. So pay real attention to what they write on the bid We talked about " trimming and topping" my trees ...that was written as " crown the tree " so the workers were going to only top the tree. After my having to convince them The workers helped by calling the estimator and getting his approval so most of the work was done. But honestly they knew there was more I expected to be done as it was a 3 tree job but after the lead on the site told me "they couldn't do more because they had other places to go" I threw in the towel. Next time I'm using a small business At least they care. Oh and by the way. The never did follow up to see if I was happy with the job. Imagine that. read more

Wow! These guys were amazing! I called and received an estimate a few weeks before they scheduled the tree removal. Their office called my and kept me up to date on the scheduled day. They gave me a estimated time of day they would be there. The crew came in, after an already long day and attacked my apple tree. The removed it in about two hours. Ive used this company for years (like 20 years) but have decided to move on. Rich is greedy and thinks very highly of himself. He used to be fine and do a good job. He had his estimator come out, Glenn, who was very nice and bid the job, he called Rich to see when they could get the job done. (tornado damage) and Rich raised the price $500 from his own estimators bid, on the phone, without seeing the jobsite! From $3000 to $3500. What ? I did not go with him to say the least because it was sleazy of him to do that. I am recommending Herfords Tree Care 503 630-2155 because of their honesty, timeliness and fair pricing. I had a 55 year old Douglas fir that had split and was dangerously close to the house and tough to get to. The crew was really careful in planning to take it out, and Rich even came out to provide guidance. Short notice in a Saturday, but we don't always get to decide when the big storm is going to leave a mark. They were pros. Efficient and effective in a tough situation. You should have seen it! We contracted with RTS to take out four trees: 2 dying Red Alders (one ancient), an Eastern Cottonwood (that was healthy, but as arborists know, not for long), and a double trunk Hemlock that was dying. This team was professional, creative in problem solving, and thorough. It was impressive watching Josh handle a chain saw at the top of our trees, topple 6' sections so they would land flat, and strategize for the best cuts. Lucas was thorough in his clean-up and chipping work (even though he didn't feel great today). And Ben was a genius with the bobcat in pulling the ancient Red Alder down, feeding the chipper with a dozen branches at once, and hauling the 2 trunk pieces up the hill to our woodpile area.
