Zane and his crew did a great job taking down a dying Adler in my back yard and grinding down the stump. They also trimmed my other trees especially away from my house and my neighbors house. What they did to my giant maple which looked like it wanted to absorb my yard and the neighbors yard was almost magical. This is the story of the tree that nearly crushed my neighbor's garage and how I came to appreciate dirty deeds done dirt cheap. On a windy Monday of this week I heard a knock, knock, knockin' on my front door. I come to find my neighbor bearing bad news. "We have a situation over here," he says. This is not something you want to hear in my neighborhood. Last time he told me this, there were 3 feral, just-born kittens on the little strip of land on the side of my garage but just inside my property line. So of course, my first response was "Oh shit, don't tell me we have more kittens!" "Oh no, this is different, come take a look." Donning my shoes, I followed him over to my same little strip of land, upon which stands a 100' tall maple that must be a good 30 years old. This tree provides a ton of shade for both of our garages and yards. It's split right down the middle, and half of it is about to fall on my neighbor's garage. Not good. I can hear the creaking as it's slowly inching it's way toward total destruction. Fuck. I immediately spearhead a quick, half-assed attempt at wrapping the trunk with webbing to hold it in place while we sort out the details for tree inspection and remedy. A call to the realtor wife produces an instant recommendation... Bridgetown Tree Service. "They'll be there in an hour!" About an hour rolls by, and up drive Alex and Zane in their old green truck. It's not pretty, but you can tell it gets the job done. A quick assessment and informed consultation settles us on the notion that the whole tree must go. While they could just remove the offending part, the remainder will rot and will have to go someday soon anyway. As Alex and Zane confer, my stomach starts to churn in anticipation of the astronomical quote I'm about to receive. Wait... what? What's this quote? Less than half of what I was expecting to have to pay (I admittedly have no clue what services of this nature should cost)? Awesome. Done. No second opinion necessary. Get to work boys! The two immediately begin removing the cracked/teetering portion of the tree. As with the nature of the situation (emergency call) there was no chipper on hand, so they had to stop once the tree was rendered safe, and come back with a chipper a few days later. Due to the last minute nature of the call, this doesn't phase me one bit. Returning exactly as scheduled a few days later with a loud, shuddering, smoke-belching chipper, the two proceed to dismantle and chip the branches, and pile us up a healthy dose of maple firewood. They even dumped a load of chips in each of our driveways on request (for mulch for our gardens). Awesome. We also revisit our decision to take the whole thing down... turns out it was a good one. As they surmised, there was a lot more rot in the tree, and it was going to come down some day anyway. Good call! Only a stump and two casualties remain. Part of my neighbor's gutter was taken out on day 1. Alex and Zane fixed it right up when they returned. My gutter was dented on day 2, and they bent it back into place, with an apology and offer to completely fix it if I wanted them to. I declined since it wasn't really much damage and it probably would have cost them their whole fee to replace it, but believe that they would have made it right had I requested. Shit happens, I know, and these two were removing a tree that was literally growing up against the side of my garage and only a few feet from my neighbor's (a tight spot, to say the least) with huge limbs. Given the space they had to work in, they did a good job. They cleaned up my neighbor's driveway of all the debris and cleaned my area as well. Aside from the minor casualties, Alex and Zane came through in spades right when we needed them to. They did it carefully and cautiously enough. They did a dirty deed, they did it for dirt cheap, and they didn't leave too much dirt behind (except what we requested they leave). I was teetering on 4-stars due to the casualties, but the honesty, reliability, speed of response, and reasonable pricing bumps it up. We had two dead trees and needed a quote. I sent out a lot of quote requests and got weird responses like "we don't grind stumps" or "all we do is grind stumps" or "we only do fruit trees" or "sir, why do you need a quote to remove dead trees, this is a Domino's Pizza" or other such responses which were not at all pro-active or helpful. Alex responded quickly and was able to provide a preliminary ball park figure based on the Google Maps Street View image of the trees. They came out and gave us a more accurate quote and were able to get us scheduled quickly. Even better... apparently they had some availability even earlier than that and emailed to ask if they could remove the trees that day, so of course we said yes and came home to the job well done. We had a surprisingly negative experience with this service. We paid over $1000 a year ago for removing and pruning trees below our neighbors' horizon to last 3 years. Bridgetown showed up when they said they would to take a look and give us a bid. then we hired them they showed up with the green truck and it's amazing how quickly the trees came down the roots were gone. My husband filmed what he could, by the time he realized what was happening they were almost entirely down. It might have taken a total of 2 hours start to finish, but more like 90 minutes. This year I bought my first house. And promptly lost my first tree. After looking around the yard I realized several other trees were looking lifeless, so i called Alex. He and Zane showed up within a half hour and gave me a very fair price to remove the downed tree and all the other trees that would probably be going down and taking out my neighbor's house or fence. They showed up on time with a crew and a chipper and within an hour had removed 6 trees and trimmed back two trees from the house. I got three bids, and decided to go with Bridgetown because of their high Yelp reviews and I felt like they'd do a really good job. They did everything exactly how it was labeled on the bid sheet. Their prices seemed very reasonable, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for high quality tree trimming. These guys are GREAT! We got several other bids to remove 8 trees off our property that had started to block our, and the neighbors, views. Their bid was about half of what the other bids were and they did a fantastic job. We even had them take down two additional trees. They made a huge mess during the removal, but when they left they had cleaned up all the wood chips and even put the lawn furniture back. I was very impressed! I live in Aloha, right on the edge of their service area. Yes, getting in contact with them was a matter of leaving a message on their answering machine, and getting a call back, but they were quite prompt with that. They came out and surveyed the twelve 50'-60' cottonwoods that I had up in the back yard, and gave be a very reasonable bid for the service that I knew I could afford: felling the trees and stump removal. We ended up penciling in the time for them to do the work I had about a month in advance, since they were booked solid until them. They were efficient, courteous, and went above and beyond by cutting many of the heavier logs into sections, even though I hadn't paid for that. They also told me how I could handle the brush removal myself by renting a chipper from home depot. At my request, they left the fence just hanging in place so that I can get the machine in to chip the brush. The work was done with no missteps. I was very impressed about the control they were able show in pulling down the trees without touching the fence or the rest of my yard. Only a small shrub was partly damaged, and even that was only a few branches. read more

Alex showed up right on time, we walked the area and identified what needed to be done, and I got the quote that afternoon. They removed a couple of dead Alder trees, all the holly, AND removed and chipped a ton of downed limbs and debris that were left over from the recent wind storms. I accepted their proposal for the removing two trees and pruning another. We set a date and agreed they'd start the job and I would join to be present for the pruning. Instead I got a call saying they were at the house and I needed permits to cut the trees (great time to tell me). I returned to the house but they just left and didn't bother to return several calls. My review is way overdue... I had Bridgetown Tree Service take out a tree that was about to fall on a neighbor's fence in May 2013 and I thought they provided amazing service. After I tied off the tree to another big tree, seeing that it was leaning more and more over a course of a weekend, I made a bunch of calls asking for emergency quotes, late on a Saturday. Bridgetown got back to me within a few hours and offered to come out the next morning, which was Sunday. They arrived early and the estimate was so reasonable and the customer service so good that I just decided to hire them. Their affordability really does not reflect the service received. No other company called me until Monday. I did not have that much money at the time and was relieved at their quote for an emergency situation. The day the tree removal was supposed to happen I got stuck in traffic on my way home. I was a half hour late but the tree had already been chopped down and wood stacked neatly. I assume they were out extra early to get the job done since it was more than a 30 minute job. I just called Bridgetown again for another round of quotes on work, so I would say I highly recommend these guys! read more

I have an old house built in 1900, which means a never ending stream of home maintenance and repairs. You know how it is, sometimes when you least expect it, you need to fork over fat cash for a home maintenance expense. Like the time the 60 foot pear tree fell over and took out an entire stretch of my cedar privacy fence. $Cha-Ching! Or the shoddy electrical work that means half the lights in my house seem to be burned out at any given time, and how I learned that all the power in my basement goes out every time it rains due to a poorly mounted exterior outlet. $$Cha-Ching!! And let's not forget the hundred year old terra cotta sewer line that waited to disconnect itself from the city main line shortly after I moved into the house. $$$Cha-ching!! The house maintenance budget never quite covers all that needs done around here. And the yard? The yard is another story altogether. I can't keep up with it. But I love my house, it is old and peaceful and solid, and has taken good care of me since I moved in. I want to take care of it as best I can so maybe some day another generation will be able to enjoy it as much as I have. Which leads me to my latest investment in home maintenance. This spring, I could no longer ignore the fact that the laurel hedge that someone planted years ago next to my front porch was no longer really just a hedge. It had become a full-on tree. In fact, since moving in six years ago, the hedge has taken on the appearance of hugging the side of my house. It curves up and around my gutters, and wraps around the porch. Not just the porch, really--half of my house was obscured from view. And, since my neighbor's house is a mere ten feet from mine, half of HER house was also now obscured and being hugged protectively by the gargantuan green giant of a laurel. She didn't appreciate her house hugging experience as much as I did, and would make polite comments and suggestions from time to time about how something smaller might look nice in that spot. And, the laurel was now reaching up and into the overhead electrical lines. After paying a small fortune every year to have the "hedge" trimmed back and watching it go through a massive growth spurt immediately thereafter, I realized it was time to swallow my Portland tree-hugger-I-can't-cut-down-a-tree guilt complex, and face the facts. It was time to remove the laurel hedge/tree. But the budget was tight. I still have to pay to deal with the upside down electrical box on my fence that fills with water when it rains, and the burned out light fixtures. What to do? I could go straight to craigslist and hire the first cheap guy I can find. But I made that mistake already, twice. Learn from my mistakes. The last guys I hired to powerwash and repaint my white picket fence just totally ignored all the local vegetation, and went ahead and spray painted my neighbor's beloved Japanese maple tree white. Did they not know there are open spaces in between each picket?! (morons!) My neighbor wasn't too happy with me for that one. I was mortified. It wasn't like I could wash the paint off. And the real reason I have the electrical box hung upside down on my back fence is because of ANOTHER craigslist hire. The guy who replaced the fence that the fallen pear tree destroyed was to thank for the electrical situation. It was nice of him to reattach the electrical box, don't get me wrong. I guess he didn't know the plastic door is supposed to flip open from the bottom and not the top. So anyway, long story short--DON'T hire the cheapest guy you can find on craigslist. Hire someone who is licensed and bonded, and who has integrity, and has good references or reviews. Like these guys. Bridgetown tree service PROMPTLY answered my email and call to get an estimate to remove my laurel situation, gave me a more than fair price, showed up on time, respected my neighbor's Japanese maple tree (since I sort of threatened I might kill them if they so much as bent a twig on it), carefully removed the laurel trees and stumped them out, and cleaned up the whole mess. In and out in just a few hours. My whole house is brighter, although I will sort of miss the trees hugging my porch. I will plant some dwarf trees back in there, something my neighbor will also enjoy. We hired Bridgetown Tree Service to take down a dead street tree, a plum tree that was alive, but falling over in our back yard, and to trim up our cedar tree and another street tree. They did a GREAT job! Four guys showed up and in about an hour, it was all complete and cleaned up, and everything looked perfect. WORST COMPANY EVER! I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone! They failed to show up, failed to call, failed to uphold their end of the contract / bargain and left me in the lurch. I called Bridgetown based on their reviews found on Yelp. Alex promptly returned my call and came out to give me an estimate. I got a good impression of him and liked the estimate so I went ahead and hired them. Was told that they would be out on the 22 or 23rd but by the end of the day on the 23rd I hadn't seen hide nor hair of them. Called Alex and left a message asking when were they going to be out to take down the tree, he called back an hour later saying that they had gotten tied up on another job and couldn't come out till the 30th at 10am to do the job. At 10:50am on the 30th I called to let them know that I had a 20 minute appointment just down the street but to call with any questions. Alex called back 10 minutes later saying that they were on their way. I told him great, I'll be back in 15 minutes and again said to call if there were any questions. When I got back home it looked like they still hadn't shown up. Figured that since it was close to noon that they took a lunch break. Waited an hour and then my older daughter informs me that one guy had stopped by in a small truck, looked at the tree for a few minutes and then left. Didn't ring the doorbell or call me, he just left... 1:30 pm rolls around and still haven't hear from them so I call and leave a message. 4 pm I still haven't heard from anyone so I call and leave another message. At 7:30pm Alex sends me an email saying "I'm really sorry however we are not going to be able to honor our bid or do the job." WTF??? My neighbor had a small apple tree in their backyard that she needed to removed. She and Alex had a conversation on the 29th and he said he would stop by the next day to give her an estimate as they were scheduled to take out my tree just down the street but he blew her off too and never bothered to call her either. I spent 3 days rearranging my schedule so that I could work from home so that I could be there in case they had any problems or questions. I contracted with Bridgetown to take down my tree and not only did they fail to do that, they never even called to explain but instead waited till that evening to send me an email! When you take down a street tree you are given a 30 day permit, because of Bridgetown's delays and failure to show up for the job that I hired them for I now only had 7 days left on the permit to find another company. Luckily I found All Around Arbor, Mike came out that day as he was headed out of town for the holiday to give me a reasonable estimate (and estimated the neighbor's tree too!) and were able to squeeze us in the following week. They showed up on time, on the day they told me and had the tree felled and the debri cleaned up in 90 mutes. If you're looking for a professional and responsible tree company call anyone but these guys. read more

Alex did a great job cutting down the bushy, misplaced pine tree in front and the stump ground out for just $50, a pyramid oak tree limbed up, and a gangly overgrown magnolia pruned. I got three quotes from different businesses, and Alex gave a free quote (of course) and had the lowest estimate by far. The most expensive one was almost twice as much.
