But despite reaching out to him for his opinion via phone with text / photo several times and leaving a message at his office afterwards because of no reply - months ago, I never got a call or text back. UPDATE, 1/28/2020 Capping off our experience with Tillis from last September (see below), we learned today that they failed to remove the below-the-ground bit of the stump they removed. We found out when a guy from Friends of Trees came by to dig the hole for our replacement tree, and discovered he couldn't do so... because of all the roots left in place. In other words, Tillis removed just enough of our stump to slice open our irrigation tubes--but no more. Awesome. =============================================== ORIGINAL REVIEW, 9/20/2019: We had a dead tree to remove, so I emailed Tillis. Eventually I met one of the owners. He was very nice. That's the good news. The bad news: Just about everything that followed, culminating in two irrigation tubes being severed and an awful phone call as I tried to resolve the issue. Here's a brief timeline... May 24: I email Tillis for an estimate. I include photos of the tree and a Google map of our property with a red X showing where the tree is. They say they'll check it out. On the day of their visit, Tillis cannot find our house. Eventually we realize someone at their office left a digit off our address. June 1: Tillis emails me a proposal. The total for removing tree and stump (and getting city permits) is $695. At the top of the document are the words, "PROPOSAL: Please sign and return to the office." I print, sign, and mail it to their office. June 27: I email Tillis to ask if they got the proposal I sent. No, they say, and btw, "We do not require a signed copy of the quote, I can go ahead and just schedule the work." Oh. OK? We schedule the work for August 15. In a short email to confirm, I write, "Can you tell us when we can expect you? We do have a sprinkler system in that area, with tubing running near the tree you'll be removing." They say they'll arrive between 12 and 2:00 to remove the tree. Probably they "will come another day for the grinding (of the stump)." August 15: A crew arrives, removes the tree, and leaves without a word. They leave a significant mess. We hear nothing else from Tillis. August 23: A crew shows up without notice, while I'm out of town. They remove the stump and leave. August 24: Early in the morning, neighbors tell my wife that water is gushing from the ground where our tree used to be. She turns our irrigation system off. Two tubes are cut clean through. ~ August 29: I leave a voicemail with Tillis, explaining what's happened. They email asking for photos of the damage. I send them. September 3: I've heard nothing, so I email again. I'm told the owner will call. He does, and I explain what's happened, including the fact that I had explicitly mentioned our sprinkler system when scheduling this work. He replies that their contract says they're not responsible. I repeat that I explicitly mentioned our sprinkler system in writing. He replies that he doesn't "have X-ray vision" and can't see where irrigation systems are. I repeat, yet again, that I EXPLICITLY MENTIONED OUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN WRITING, for this very reason--so that Tillis workers could ask for my help in avoiding it. When it becomes clear that Tillis has no interest in acknowledging fault or in paying to repair their damage, I lose patience and say that I'm sorry we ever used them. At this point, the owner mumbles, in a blend of annoyance and defeat, "I'll fix the tubes." I thank him, we hang up, and I immediately arrange to have someone else come to make the repair, because at this point I don't want these guys on our property again. All in all, sloppy work and a needlessly unpleasant experience. read more

Now my jungle has been thoughtfully and artistically tamed and my 180 degree view of downtown Portland, four mountains, and two rivers has been restored. These guys are the best! I found them because they were in my neighborhood doing another job and there was a sign out near the site, and I just so happened to be in need of tree removal and stump grinding, as well as a little work raising the crown on another tree. I got in touch with them, and they responded very quickly. Dustin came out and gave me an estimate in one day, which I think was fantastic. They were the first company I called, and after the estimate, I needed to get in touch with a few more companies to compare. Well, I certainly realized quickly that their efficiency in dealing with me and my estimate needs was unmatched by anyone else. I waited for one company to respond, when they did, it took more than a week to get an estimate back. Another company never responded, and I had one more company I touched base with that I just didn't want to work with. I knew when Dustin left from giving me the estimate that I wanted him to be the one to do the job, but I needed to do the homework for my husband's sake (you know how they can be hahaha). At the end of it all, they showed up early-ish, and got done in less time than they quoted, and they were flexible with me, because at some point, my husband took over communication temporarily and he decided to get only part of the job done. When they arrived, I ended up asking them to just do the original job we had discussed and they did so graciously. I am very happy, and I highly recommend Tillis! I had Tillis Tree trim some branches and also prune a fur tree last summer. The owner did a very good job but trampled two Hosta plants that were under the pine. When I commented on it he never apologized but offered a lame excuse. A simple apology would've been appreciated. Not impressed. Won't be using them going forward. read more

Plan ahead- these guys are booked out 4-6 weeks! Glad I took notice of them down the road trimming up a few trees. I prefer favoring smaller businesses :-) Dustin met with me and went over what was to be removed and or cut back, even had the bid complete before he left! Trim day came and all were here- like an orchestra ....up the tree- to the chipper and all 3 worked seamlessly! I appreciate how tough it can be calling out what branch, how far back to trim. etc..I worried too much ( but I always do! ) I will call them back in a few years!
