At this location Orange Grove in Pasadena, I had sent my husband to buy my favorite dessert donuts. If I would have gone with him I would never allowed him to pay $1.59 per donut. The real problem is that one donut was very hard like rock. The other two were soft. You would think that if you pay $1.59 they would be fresh at least. We usually buy donuts here once a month some in the past are very hard like a rock. Next, even though we transfer them to close container immediately they still get hard the next day. I didn't bother to call in and complain because it's not the first time we get old donuts. Parking is horrible there. I am surprised that their donuts are that expensive because parking there is a huge hassle. Too many other stores including a market it has to compete with for parking. I can't even tell you the level of sweet passion I've seen at 1 am from this jolly man who works here at night. I donut think I've ever seen such unbridled sheer baking bliss since the 90s. It was a treat to witness a man in this digital techno era enjoying the simple pleasures of baking with music . It inspired me to lose myself in baking and singing again watching this worker. He sings and bakes fresh donuts like no ones watching. They are so delicious! The fresh bagel sandies and iced coffee are a real treat too! Treat 'em right because this spot is a real hidden gem especially for late night treats. I wanted to give a Negative Star but that's not an option! My daughter and her two friends went to get a dozen donuts at 11:07 pm 7/14/19. All 12 donuts were hard as a rock and stale. Not one not two all twelve donuts! I called and spoke to the gentleman on duty he said he has to talk to his boss and hangs up on me. That being said, the fried dough at Winchells is outstanding. From the standard glazed fried dough to the complicatedly simple chocolate eclair, they are knocking frie dough out of the park. The coffee is "fine" and almost "really good" when paired with an eclair. They have bodacious bagel selections as well with decent breakfast bagel options if your thinking fried dough isn't what your feeling at the moment. Every time My friend & I go in they great us in Spanish and when we reply to them in English they roll there eyes. The doughnuts aren't that great. The cronut-like doughnut (forgot what they call theirs) was really hard and oily, you could tell it had been sitting there for a while. The custard-filled doughnut was better but the custard had a strange taste to it. Not in terms of freshness, just the flavor of it was different from most other places. Coffee was average. The product (donut) is good . No doubt. It's the hiring practices that I have a hard time with. It seems that whoever does the hiring at every Los Angeles location seems to hire only non-English speaking (or very little) LATINOS. Now does this mean that there is no other qualified nationality of people to make donuts in Los Angeles. These hiring practices are racist at best and need to be rectified. Each one that I go to has Latino television playing and the employees are communicating in Spanish. WHY??? This to me means that you only cater to Latinos. Is that correct?Another question is: How do they even get the job if they cannot speak or understand English? In all fairness; its not just Winchell's, its McDonald's, and every other fast food chain in Los Angeles. I love Winchell's, but this specific location is the absolute worst!! Honestly, I have NO idea how this location has as many stars as it does! I have come here a couple of times during the morning and it's absolutely horrible. There are plenty of parking spots, but none that you can use because people like to loiter. This specific time I came in, the line was long and when I was finally helped, my donuts were taken by someone because the staff doesn't hand them to you directly. And to top it off the staff member just smiled and gave me that look like "what am I supposed to do about it?" She didn't apologize or offer me new donuts. I felt like walking out, but the person who had taken them realized it wasn't theirs and returned them to me. I was fuming and I will be contacting the chain directly.
