I've been coming to this location since high school times and they have their own ring that's different from all the fancy donuts these days. Sometimes you just want a good o tradition donut with a normal sugar or chocolate glaze. No need to decorate, no need to add fancy ingredients, just a decent price donut that fills me up. My love affair with Apple Fritters started with Winchell's. I remember the first time my grandpa brought me one. I was like, "Whoa! What is this!" I had never seen or tasted anything like it before. Been here more than the other donut places. Winchell's has always been one of my favorites since I was a child. My dad would would take me to Downtown Los Angeles location to buy donuts, while he would also buy himself a cup of coffee. I think there was only one sized coffee back then that comes in a regular styrofoam cups. Gosh, it smelled wonderful! And that's probably why I'm currently addicted to coffee of all types. Now back to my review. This location in my opinion is probably the cleanest, never crowded (when I go), and they serve fresh donuts. The donuts here are usually made in the morning by 9am, per the lady working there. She also says if they run low, they'll bake some more donuts. Yay! That's probably why they're usually fresher than other locations I've been to. Good variety of donuts, twirls, donut holes, rolls, etc. I like the fact that Winchell's always give two extras when you purchase a dozen for $13.99. So basically, each donut is a buck. But too shabby! This Winchell's is located in the same plaza as Pavilions. But the main entrance is on Lake Ave., But there is also a back entrance if you park in the back sharing the parking lot with the super market. They charged me a dollar more than the menu price for an egg and cheese bowl, then said that it was tax (but tax was charged separately on the receipt), then pretended that the 5 on the sign was a 6, then refused to give me the dollar back or make up for it in any other way. I have visited this Winchell's located one block north of South Pasadena and only two blocks west of the world-renown California Institute of Technology. I always purchase something before sitting down to work on legal pleadings and study for the upcoming CA bar exam. The daytime staff are friendly but some of the nighttime staff is rude. They often ignore you when you're standing at the counter, even after you've called out, "Hello!" several times. And a couple of them are short in that passive-aggressive way that leaves room for "interpretation" should you call them out on it. Last night I was here working and studying. A lady who was standing outside went inside when I showed as well. She kept nodding off like she was on drugs. After a few minutes, a young man showed up, fumbled around with his phone for several minutes, then sat down at the lady's table. Something felt off about the whole situation. I could feel it. As I gathered my belongings and took off my headphones, the young man said to the lady loud enough for me to hear: "Is he the one you're talking about?" The lady nodded, "Yes." It was an obvious attempt to send me some kind of message (or perhaps make me a mark). I don't like feeling threatened while I'm studying at a donut shop located in our beautiful Pasadena, across the street from South Pasadena and only two blocks from Caltech. Otherwise, I would go study down by USC. I can't imagine too many neighbors would like it either. But at least this comment places Winchell's on notice about the questionable behavior I observed at its 24-hour Pasadena location. And next time I see either of them I'm calling the police. I want to know if it was their idea to intimidate me or if someone else put them up to it--like the staff. If you visit this location, be careful. They knowingly let sketchy people hang out here and some of the workers are rude to the point of hostility. I'm not talking about homeless people--I'm talking about SKETCHY PEOPLE. Watch your stuff. Winchell's is your local 24/7 donut shop. I appreciate the fact that they're open during the late hours as I sometimes find myself ordering a croissant from here during the wee hours of the morning. The service is great, the people working here have always been kind and hard at work. I love their jalapeño ham and cream cheese croissant the most here, this is what I usually get when I'n craving something savory for breakfast! The only thing I don't really enjoy was the donut holes. They tasted a bit old and weren't fresh. I see the bags of donut holes sitting in the front of the store every time I go and I'm not sure if they replace them every day or not. I would stay away from those. Winchell's is a 24 hour Southern California-originated donut chain. This particular location has been here for pretty much my entire time living here, which is a good 20-some years. I came here around 5 PM to pick up a dozen donuts for my family. It was actually fairly busy around this time and there was a small wait-time to get my donuts. Parking can be challenging. You can park at the nearby Pavilion's lot as there's lots of people coming and going, but the lot is kind of small for the amount of businesses here. There's not a lot of nearby street parking. There's not much to say about the donuts here, except that they're somehow still addicting to eat even though they're not spectacular. They're yeast donuts, so they're light and fluffy for the most part. They're actually not bad even though they're not always fresh, but I kind of expect that from a 24-hour location. The donuts keep well and last for at least a week. They have all sorts of donuts, such as maple bars, bear claws, sugar twists, and jelly-filled donuts. The jelly tastes extremely artificial (especially the lemon jelly), so I would stay away from those. The glazed donuts are pretty good; I like them the most out of all the donuts here. I know a lot of the reviews complain about the service, but my experience here was actually decent. It was understaffed, with only one employee, but she was very good at managing the line and handling my order. She was really nice and efficient, which is valuable when there was a line occurring. this particular location has very rude staff. I'm not sure if it's a family unit but they all have the same kind of why are you here attitude along with their unfriendliness, a lot of the women's staff are cold. not to mention I don't believe this place has good sanitary practices. Once I came through and there was a woman taking orders behind the register with an extremely long T-shirt on, and it made it appear like she didn't have on any pants. Completely inappropriate, and not in uniform. then recently they hired a lady who barely speaks English but I guess she didn't have proper training to learn the menu. I ordered a turkey breast sandwich on a croissant, and when I got the bag, she literally put mayo and turkey and a weird piece of cheese.none of that are the ingredients for that sandwich. This Winchell's location is located right next to Starbucks near a corner and shares the lot with Von's (where parking is free, there is also street parking right in front of Winchell's). I stopped by this location last Friday a little before 12:30 pm. I parked in the Von's parking lot and walked over. Because I won a free dozen donuts ($9.50 value) from the Holiday Fest the weekend before, I thought it would be nice to pick up some donuts for the people at my work (also I am not a big donut person, and especially my husband and I would not be able to eat 1 dozen). When I walked in (if you park at the Von's, you will enter through the back entrance), I headed towards the front of the store. I was immediately greeted by an employee behind the counter. I showed her my voucher for a dozen donuts. She asked me what I would like. Being that I do not eat donuts on a regular basis, I just asked for an assortment. She quickly boxed up an assortment (including some Christmas decorated donuts, I am such a sucker for stuff like that) and then was on my way out. Then I headed to work and dropped off the box. I did save 2 donuts though (one glazed that was decorated with red and green frosting for Christmas and one sugar donut) for my mom and my husband. Since no one at my home bothered to eat the donuts I brought home for them the day of, they all consumed it the next day (I also got a bite of each). And to my surprise, they both were not stale and tasted good (well like a standard donut). Although this place does not have fancy gourmet donuts, I thought the service was friendly. There were plenty of good ol' fashion donuts to choose from (Why does everything have to be so hipster and fancy? Why can't we just enjoy something as is?). Honestly I've never been the type to spend the time writing a review about, well.... pretty much anything; but this for some reason tonight I feel has warranted time and opinion. Since I was a young teen, I lived just down the street from this store. Before I could drive it was always somewhere I would walk to whenever I'd get that spontaneous craving for fried dough with various possible icings or none. Open 24/7 convenience became nostalgia. Winchell's always felt welcome. It was smack dab in the middle of between myself and my childhood friends. It was one of our spots. Back when there was outdoor booth seating, Winchell's was the spot where we all would meet up. Anytime of night or day, way back when, you could find us there. Either with a chess board, a set of poker chips with Magic The Gathering cards or just a pack of smokes and a conversation. Back then that was where we could be found. The Winchell's on South Lake Ave. The seats outside have now since long been gone. The way back friends moved and moved on. Some still here some been tooken, but that Winchell's on lake 24/7 still here and open. That's why it saddens me so to say the quality seems gone. I went there the past two nights. The first with my wife and the second alone. The first night it felt as if the person behind the counter resented our order. When I asked which doughnuts were most fresh I was told "none of them" discouraged I still purchased four doughnuts two sandwiches and left. Then tonight I placed my order which was almost identical to the night before but found the veggie bagel sandwich I brought home for my wife lacked the avacodo and then caused her to vomit profusely after consumption. She is very sensitive to bacteria. It baffles me though how that can be an issue when the ingredients where only vegetables. It's sad to see the quality slipping from the place I held in my memory so high. The stars I gave are solely nostalgic. T here's one guy who where's glasses and works there and frankly is the only employee that know will do a great job. I loved this place. She walked down to Winchell's (not this location) for coffee and donuts and bought a dozen to bring back with her for our afternoon snack coming from school. This location is a disappointment of what Winchell's used to be when I was a kid. I've come to this location a few times only to be disappointed. Donuts with no love are not donuts. They're fried dough! The donuts I've had here are fried bread with very little glazing. I recall donuts of the past were thick and fluffy squeezed in a bakers dozen with little space in between the top cover. These donuts are small, not fluffy, and very thin layer of glaze. I recall glaze whether chocolate, maple, or sugar to be nice and thick. Glaze should be painted on donuts in multiple passes. I'll pass from buying donuts from here. What a shame! The donuts are good. They're not anything to rave about but they satisfy your donut craving. Like any place, they're best when fresh. I think it's still a shop to buy yummy donuts. I do NOT recommend any of the iced coffees. I can't speak for the hot coffee because I don't usually drink hot coffee but the iced coffee wasn't good at all. I came here with my business partner on Monday January 11, 2016 for a late night (around 10:30pm) snack and coffee. The cafe looks small from the store front but when you go inside, it's long in length. Clean and organized atmosphere. The donut cases were full of donuts, friendly staff (male & female), limited seating and loud music that was playing a latino radio station. I ordered a chocolate glazed donut (bar chocolate iced) with an ice hazelnut coffee with cream and my business partner ordered a coconut white cake donut. The donuts were AWFUL! Even though the donut cases were full of delicious looking donuts, that's all they were - good looking donuts. Both yeast and cake donuts were absoultely stale, as though they're been sitting around for 8 hours untouched. They were still semi soft, stale, absolutely no flavor that we both ended up spitting them out and tossing them in the trash can. The hazaelnut ice coffee was mediocre, which I expected. It was no better than the coffee that I buy at a gas station or 7-11. They didn't add any sweetner so I ended up adding 3 sugar packets and it still tasted bland. A 16oz coffee for $2.49, it was okay. For the price that I paid, I can't complain. Cheap food at cheap prices = low quality at this place. Customer Serivce - the 2 staff that was there were friendly. My business partner and I stayed for an hour at one of their tables (which was dirty and I cleaned it myself). There were 3 customers total at the time when we were there and the entire time the female employee talked LOUDLY and non-stop! I have no idea why both of them were talking so loud but it was very annoying since their conversation was echoing in the cafe since it was quite. I don't expect for staff to stay quiet or not to interact with each other but she wouldn't shut up the entire time that we were there and not once did she lower her voice.
