First, the fresh fruit section was small and the fruit was very expensive. So, I deducted a star. But, the store itself was pretty large. I did buy some strawberries and bananas. The surprises came in the ready to eat section. There was a ton of homemade soups, which looked delicious. I thought the prepared salads also looked really tasty. I ended up leaving with a Greek salad, which was fresh and delicious. Lots of feta cheese, lettuce, red peppers, olives and Greek dressing. Another, pleasant surprise was the bread section. There were a lot of freshly made breads. I bought a sourdough bread that was really good. It was hard to choose from the many different selections. The vegetable selections were plentiful and looked really nice. The service was excellent. I was checked out in a jiffy. My grocery helper was so nice and accommodating. The store was clean and well organized. I am sure the quality of food is higher, than a regular supermarket. I would probably return for the prepared foods and breads. But, the cost is pretty high. So, shop carefully.

The eggless egg salad wraps from the deli are also good. Other favorite products are the almond chocolate pudding and the Virginia honey roasted peanuts. I don't do my regular shopping here but love to stop in when I'm in the downtown Rockville area. There is a convenient parking lot and garage spaces dedicated to the store, always a plus. There is a small salad bar which looked well-maintained when I was last there (but did not try) and a coffee and juice bar (the latter I've only found so-so--my açaí bowl from a visit months ago wasn't good, but I've heard the chai is tasty). I think there are wine and cheese events also held at the coffee bar seating area. I love the small book section although I've not browsed there yet, The only thing I've found not consistently great is service at the cash register. Mostly the cashiers have been friendly but occasionally we'll get the few who don't seem to want to be there... Recommended for a visit at least once...!

What I mean to say is you can get a lot done within a short distance: kibble for your cat or dog, oil for your car, and a little something for yourself. I'd say 40% of the store is devoted to beer and wine. Seems like the wine enthusiasts love Rodman's, and they do wine tastings there on occasion. Wine isn't my thing though I'll pick one up if the bottle is pretty. The beer is...beer. Most of it not my style, usually the craft here and elsewhere has too much of an aftertaste. But I digress! What I come here for are the imported foods. Yes, some can be found elsewhere including Giant and Safeway but others are definitely foreign. Stuff from Europe, perhaps a little from Down Under (which bits I forget). There's a nice sampling of chocolate and non-alcoholic drinks, including 'Just ice Tea'. Just mentioning it because there's two or three places I can find it and herbal tea etc. can be a nice alternative to energy drinks. (Those pointing out that I could make my own tea are correct, and that it's cheaper, but beyond the basic put-teabags-in-bottle-and-let-it sit I just don't have the time.) Now on to cheeses: they have a good selection. I feel the price is right, but at the same time if you go to Aldi's (to the right, at the end of the sidewalk) you can find some comparable cheese for $2-$3 less. Don't know if it's worth the walk and waiting in line, though, when you have something here. There are sales here, of course, and if you go by sale alone you may make out like a bandit. Just don't go when you're on a diet or fasting. Too many temptations.

I introduced her to "Baci" Chocolate a candy from Italy, varieties of milk & dark chocolate stuffed w/hazelnuts also on sale. I enjoy them during the holidays. And purchased the milk chocolate version & a salty treat. Well she noticed the dark chocolate display was empty. She asked a store associate if more "Baci" dark chocolate was available? A young man checked inventory & found none. Then he checked some other display & found (2) bags-"Baci" dark chocolate candy. My friend was thrilled & appreciated his diligence. He learns everyone's name, expresses genuine interest in how they're doing, what they've been doing etc. He also accomodates beer/wine requests when possible, which is nice since Montgomery County is notorious for their control of brands on alcohol. The pricing here is pretty much on par with most stores in the county, but the service is why you'll keep coming back. If you live in the neighborhood, why not take a stroll over to the store or bring your dog inside even. Harry has acheived the goal of creating that 'family owned' neighborhood corner store feel.

While I saw some things like English teas, German cookies, and a few Greek items, it seemed like the majority of the offerings were from Eastern Europe. I think over half of the products had labels in Cyrillic alphabet with no translation on them in any fashion, so some things you just gotta know what it is or ask the staff. I saw a lot of things from Georgia and Ukraine, but I think I saw other products from that region (Russian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, etc.). The staff were very friendly, and cheerfully assisted me with some of the pastries we purchased. One had a nice balance of flaky pastry and fruit filling while the blintzes seemed a bit underwhelming. I also picked up a bottle of dessert wine and Children #1 and #2 picked out some candies that caught their eye. The inside is clean and somewhat small but easy to navigate. There is music playing (I don't know what language; I want to say Russian but in today's climate that could be a charged statement. Just want to say it positively adds to the vibe). Worth checking out, if you want to explore a product you might not otherwise be exposed to or if you want to find a specialty European item that you've been missing.
