This place overcharges. For the beer I bought, Martin's wanted to charge 42% more than the place down the street charges. The liquor prices seem inflated by about the same amount. There are stores nearby that won't play you for a sucker. read more

I've tried to patronize this business three times now and each time the experience has not been all that pleasant. The first time, I had recently moved here and locked myself out of my apartment. My neighbor managed to jimmy the lock (noted!) and get me inside. To thank him, I went to Martin's to purchase a "themed" bottle of something. The owner (I believe) was kinda sorta nice in helping me find a bottle of 19 Crimes wine (funny, right?) It was months later when I realized that Martin's charged double what other liquor stores charge for the same bottle. To be fair, this store is surrounded by hotels with tourists and businesspeople who believe that DC is overpriced on everything. That's just good business. But a discount for locals would go far in endearing Martin's to the community. Second time, I needed a bottle of wine quickly. I had been walking my dog and while she was waiting for me outside, she pooped on the sidewalk. Because it was the second time on the walk, I didn't have another bag, so I went back into the store and asked the owner for something to clean it up. (I'm a good citizen!) He pulled out a bag and demanded a nickel before he'd give it to me. Really? Third time, I needed something specific: whipped cream vodka. I had first gone to the liquor store on Florida half a block from Martin's. They didn't have it. So before I walked a block in the other direction on Florida, I stopped at Martin's. (Are you paying attention? This is important. There are THREE liquor stores within two blocks of each other on Florida Avenue.) A youngish guy (not the owner) told me they didn't have what I was looking for. I asked him if could tell me where the next closest liquor store was. He said "no". I stared at him dumbfounded to which he replied, "I only shop here, I don't know where there's another liquor store." I call BS. In any case, three strikes you're out for me. read more

Located in the same strip mall as the new Post Office, Martin's is famous for its wine selection and its giant mannequin of a police officer reaching for his gun. "We ID," says the mannequin. Not only do they ID, but they overcharge you as well, pricing their 6 packs of Busch Light at $4.99. (Red Hook is a decent $7.99). My guess is that this place caters to a more well-to-do clientele than I associate with. I only know one kind of wine, and that is Charles Shaw. You get it for 2.99 at Trader Joe's and it tastes the same to me as anything you can find at Martin's. Last week I found a different liquor store, on my way home from work, and I haven't been back to Martin's since. read more

Small, hole in the wall shop. Staff is excellent and really helpful but the space feels really crowded. I also saw that some of the more specialized liquor is behind the counter i.e. kalua, pama, etc. Even though it's small it was sort of difficult to navigate since it was do packed with options. Prices also seemed pretty high but I guess you can expect that for a liquor store next to large hotels. If you're looking for wine and basic beer and liquor selections this is your place. read more

Martin's has a fun old neighborhood store vibe: I love the handwritten descriptions on the wine shelves--they remind me of a bookstore & help me look WAY more sophisticated at dinner parties. Was sold a $40 bottle of tequila for $80 by the owner/manager who claimed he 'only works here and doesn't set the prices'. Poor selection to begin with, and even worse costumer service. Recommend you go elsewhere unless you don't mind payin double. read more

I came into Martin's looking for a nice bottle of scotch for a gift, something in the $60.00 neighborhood and aged 12 years or more. I did some investigating on the interwebs, but the thing is, I don't drink scotch. When I walked in, Martin just told me to let me know if I needed anything. He let me poke around for a bit. I frowned when I didn't see what I was looking for and then saw nicer bottles close to the register. Like Chloe said, I told Martin I was looking for a bottle of scotch that costs around $60.00. He pointed me to a 15 year scotch for $60.99 that according to him was very smooth. Perfect. It's looking pretty sweet in the gift basket I just arranged. While I was ringing up, I noticed cute tchotchkes on the shelves behind the register, like hearts and a little "LOVE" paperweight. I also noticed several HRC stickers on the fridges, which always makes me smile. I'll have to update when I buy something I actually drink. But, yes, I definitely get the feeling this is the place where I could say, "Hey Martin, I'm looking for a drinkable $10 bottle of wine," and just make that my weekly wine venture. I'm going to have to disagree on the characterization of this store's location as a "strip mall." It just happens to be next to a post office, and probably the nicest one I've used in the District, and right next to the Washington Hilton, no less. read more

Martin is a great guy. But he's pretty merciless on prices. Beer, liquor. Even sugar water! Example: simple syrup (sugar water) price at Martin's- $13.95. Down the street at Universal- $5.95! Rip off. Stay away. I gave them a lot of business during the quarantine, but no more. I started to notice that my bill was getting higher and higher. I didn't really mind because I wanted to support a local business. Then it got to a point where items were 50-100% higher than what they cost elsewhere. What finally did it was the last two times I didn't ask for the receipts, and what showed up on my credit card statement was higher than what I paid at the store. read more

I absolutely love Martin's--no matter what I need, Martin is there to help me out. I cook often and with liquors that I'm not familiar with. Martin always gives me tips on how to cook with what I'm buying, never steers me towards unnecessarily expensive choices, and always asks how it turned out. I recently had to purchase a bottle of scotch (like another review below) and know nothing about scotches. Martin gave me tips and tasting notes and helped me pick out the right gift for the right price. It's the attitude that makes this place totally worth it. I used to frequent Martin's quite often when I lived over there. I must say I always had a pleasant experience. As another reviewer said, this is not a place for cheap stuff....but I wouldn't say it is overly expensive. They have a small collection and a lot of it does lean on the higher price range. I, personally, think that a $10 can be just as decent if not better than a $30 bottle. The thing about Martin's is if you say "hey, I'm looking for a nice bottle of red for under $15" then Martin, the very friendly owner, will point a couple of great bottles out to you, and you will not be disapointed. This is the first place where I had "La Tango" Malbec from Argentina...yum yum yum....and I think its $11...plus...the label is a hologram of two people tango dancing....you can't beat it...Thanks Martin! read more

I've been shopping at Martin's for years. There is no one more knowledgeable about wines. The other stores in the area don't have a clue about the difference between a nice wine from Napa or a nice French wine. They just live in the store with their families and keep long hours. I don't understand John B.'s comments. If you are hooked on '3 Buck Chuck' then maybe you shouldn't be critiquing a quality establishment such as Martin's. Martin will always go out of his way to point you in the right direction for what you want and not what he wants to sell. BIG DIFFERENCE. If you want a Malbac for $13 dollars, no problem. If you need a Cab for $25, no problem. Just engage Martin in what you are looking for and he will have it on the shelf. He has never steered my wrong and his wine parings to my meal preparations have been spot on. Go see Martin and let him guide you in your selections and you will then be hooked as am I. read more

It is a snowy, icy day, when all I really want to do is curl up in front of my fireplace with a glass of nice full bodied red wine. And I knew I could count on Martin to be open, most important since I do not want to go on a walk for fun, and as friendly and helpful as usual.
