I came here because I was in search for Georgian wine, and I read other reviews saying that the owners of this wine shop are Georgian. The inside is spacious, with two levels, and a good variety of wine as well as other types of alcohol. The woman working behind the counter was friendly and helpful, and directed me to where the Georgian wine was. I picked up a bottle of Amber wine for $25. I brought it to my friend's house for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it- a few people took pictures of the bottle so they could buy it. I thought $25 was reasonable considering the wine was from 2016, and tasted really good. This place will probably become my go-to wine store in DC from now on! read more

Well-stocked wine and liquor store in a surprisingly airy and refined space. A helpful staff member was available when I arrived and guided my selection thoughtfully. As full disclosure, I was on the hunt for Georgian wines and went to Batch 13 knowing it was Georgian-owned - so I had a feeling the staff would be able to help me. That said, the gentleman who helped me with my purchase was responsive and knowledgeable but not pushy; he had personal knowledge of the wines and wineries and patiently talked through several options to hone in on wines I would enjoy. I mentioned I had several blocks to walk so he considerately packed the bottles with cardboard dividers to prevent any damage. I had a lovely visit and will certainly return. I found the prices to be reasonable for the central location. I look forward to exploring more of the selection on my next visit! read more

Batch 13 has a large selection of many different types of liquor, and it actually has more of a selection than most places in DC. It's location makes it very convenient and I found the price points to be on par with and/or even cheaper than most places in DC that offer the same selection. Much of the alcohol offered here is pretty rare and is pretty difficult to find anywhere else. What really stood out for me was the fact that I had asked the owner if they carried a particular and rare alcohol, and though they didn't, they went through the trouble of putting in a special order just for me. This type of customer service is extremely valuable, and I actually couldn't believe they did that. Only a few days later, the owner called me and told me the stock was in. So many tastings, so little time! I don't know how often they roll out the samples the way they were when I stopped in during the holiday season, but there were five or six labels doing tastings, many of them with five or more goodies to try. And since I firmly believe spit buckets are for sissies, I was definitely aglow with the, uh, holiday spirit by the time I left. I also took some time to look around a bit before I got bleary-eyed (also during and after), so I can note that there's a hefty selection of craft beers, conveniently organized and labeled by brew type (pale ales, belgians, etc.), with many categories filling an entire freezer. I don't know shit about wine but there seemed to be a lot of it, and there were also tons of liquors that I didn't recognize in cool bottles and such, bitters, etc., so I'm thinking this'd be a great place to score an easy gift for your favorite classy drunkard. I called and asked them if they stocked Rhum (Agricola) Vieux or Cachaca and if there was an email address where I could send them some questions. We brought a bottle of a portuguese white wine (Anjos Vinho Verde) to a party last weekend, and it was gone within 5 minutes - and there were plenty of other options. It's that good - plus, at two bottles for $20, pretty reasonable, considering the quality one would get for comparable prices at Cork and/or Whole Foods. I've heard (through Justin C and UrbanDaddy - wait, I've never seen them both at the same time... coincidence?) that they'll soon be hosting rooftop tastings, which may be enough to push Batch 13 into the five-star realm. I'm not a big alcoholic guy, so take my advice for what it's worth, but they seemed to have a really good selection of wine and interesting beers. I went in to purchase some wine for a Thanksgiving dinner I'm attending. I asked the sales person for a couple of cheap bottles that might go well with turkey. He chose a couple, I took them and bought them. Do I know if they are really good for the price? Not really.....as I said I don't know diddly about wine, but he was nice, the place looked interesting, and they did their job, so for that I'm giving it 4 stars. It seems like just a few months ago I was answering a poll from my friend who writes for Borderstan about what businesses my neighborhood really needed. At the time my answer was a very quick and easy "craft beer store". There are liquor shops galore on the 14th St corridor, you practically have to close your eyes not to see one, but none of them really specialize in craft beer outside of a shelf or two. The guys over at Connecticut Avenue Wine & Spirits do a decent job, but that's in Dupont, and they're as guilty of price gouging as the Whole Foods here is most of the time. We needed something that echoed the great wine shops of the area such as Cork, and provided a retail outlet for all the amazing things that you can find at ChurchKey, just down the street. I remember spotting the promo stuff in the window for Batch 13 a while back and thinking "ah, yet another bar, that's cool, I guess", but low and behold it's answered my call for better beer and I am totally stoked for it. The fact that it lies just 2 blocks from my doorstep is a huge bonus for me, because carrying multiple cases of beer through the city can be quite laborious on a hot summer day. For now though I can only give these guys 4 stars, pending the completion of the rest of the store. The upper level is slated to be filled with single bottles (yes!), great for guys like me who hate to drink the same thing twice. Although it feels like lately my drinking doesn't quite keep up with my purchasing... Supposedly they're looking to carry upwards of 1,000 different unique labels, and after previewing the space yesterday I can say this should be no problem. Luckily DC can skirt around a lot of the blacklisted beers that VA and MD can't carry as well. There's even talk of rooftop tastings and events slated for next Spring, a ways off, but a promise of good times for sure. Matt, the manager, showed me the patio, surrounded by graffiti tagged walls and other "high" rise buildings, and it seems like a really cool spot to hang out. I am all about this place for the beer, but once they get their liquor license in they promise to carry a wide assortment of small batch spirits as well (along with lots of wine, which already lines the shelves). I have no doubt this will slowly evolve into a 5 star spot for me, after all, I pretty much got just what I asked for in Logan Circle. Now to begin lobbying for a movie theater... ----------------- Update: Having been back multiple times now since they opened I am happy to report that the liquor selection is top notch. They basically only carry small batch liquor, so none of that flavored Fruit Roll-up Vodka type stuff. This is where I bring my liquor snob friends when I want to impress them. The guy who was working was both nice and helpful, but this place is overpriced. Expect to pay roughly 20-25% more for your bottles here. As an example, Evan Williams Single Barrel 2004 bourbon has an MSRP of $26.99, and most places sell it for that price. Here, it's $8 more at $34.99. Every bottle I saw at Batch 13 was more expensive than I've seen at other places. So yeah, if you're in a bind and need some booze fast, this isn't a bad place. But just go in expecting to pay more that usual. read more

There was a day when Barrel House was the only real game on 14th for anyone interested in something other than Night Train and tall boys of Colt 45. Thank goodness those days are gone, and Batch 13 has really upped the ante. This Logan/U Street gem offers a wide selection of adult beverages spread over two stories, including a large number of artisinal spirits like DC's Ivy City Gin and Virginia Distillery's Port Finished Whiskey. The owner's are from Georgia (the republic of) and consequently have a decent selection of Georgian wines (mainly red) that stray beyond the sweet Saperavis and Rkatsitelis popular in the former Soviet Union. They also have a great selection of bitters, for those budding mixologists among you. Sure, prices are a little high, but you can't argue with the broad range of choices. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE Batch 13!!!! We always spend a good chunk of money when we go in here, and not because things are expensive, he actually has some good prices on items, such as DC Brau which we usually find for $14, but he has it for $10, but because we see so many things we want! They are, as far as we know, the only liquor place that sells the Corsair line around here. Corsair is a great distillery that makes outstanding stuff (check them out). Their Triple Smoke whiskey, and Red Absinthe are wonderful, and we are keeping an eye out for the seasonal Pumpkin. Batch also has all the local distillery's items, such as Catoctin Creek, Green Hat Gin and a couple other places in VA. So that makes us local supporters happy. They also have tastings on Fridays and Saturdays (I think it is those days) and they usually do tastings of liquor and wine, of which we have purchased several items. The guy that is usually there is named George....so we are partial to that name. They are also dog friendly, the owner will walk out from behind the counter and give your dog a treat. If you want something beyond Angostura or Peychaud's, Batch 13 has it. If you want some fancy bourbon or rye whiskey to go with your fancy bitters, you'll find it here, too. This will probably get some flack from the true whiskey connoisseurs, but I've never seen so many gorgeous letterpress labels on bottles in one place. When they opened I was suspicious but they have won me over. Great place to go when you need a gift. Upstairs they have a respectable selection of whiskeys from the Scottish Islands. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful but not intrusive and definitely not pretentious. This is my go-to liquor store for spirits, and appreciate that it is so conveniently located in my hood. I trust George for his encyclopedic knowledge of hard liquors, and he and his colleagues at Batch 13 have an astounding selection, including unusual distilleries and other producers. I trust his recommendations because I have been pleased and surprised every time. Their selection of bourbons, ryes, scotches, and gins is especially huge, but all liquors are represented very well. Looking for an unusual amaro or bitter? They'll have it or George will order whatever he doesn't have for you. Absolutely HUGE selection. Super friendly owner. Also the only place I know of in DC where you can get Georgian chacha (very wide selection of Georgian wines as well). One of the employees took me directly to the very specific item I was looking for straight away, and even recommended a slightly cheaper item for that particular liquor. I know most "adults" on yelp are terrified at the thought of actually treating employees/workers/managers/owners as regular people, so after talking with the owner for about five minutes, I discovered the negative reviews here are indeed quite absurd. Anyone familiar with Georgia (the country) will tell you that occasionally being shadowed in a store is just a normal experience (owner is Georgian). I didn't have that issue myself and didn't see anyone else there experiencing that either. But if they did, I would not have freaked out about it, written about the great selection and clean store, and then given it one star, like several others have done. If you're looking for a huge selection with normal prices (although what I found was much cheaper than I was expecting), then this is a great place to check out. You might even entertain the very scary(!!!!) thought of talking to the owner (gasp!) to discover for yourself how friendly he is. read more

They have an enormous selection, so if you're looking for a hard-to-find bottle or just want a change of pace from your favorites Batch 13 is a good bet. The service is hit or miss. My experience for the most part is that they ignore you and may respond inexplicably to your questions. You may get a blank stare or a simple finger pointed to the upper floor. However, I have at times received some recommendations (to high end products) that were very good. They'll definitely help you find a top shelf product. And yes, they shadow you in the store, especially if you go upstairs. I'm a white guy and they keep an eye on me. Doesn't really bother me all that much I guess. Some of those bottles cost hundreds of dollars; it makes sense they would want to keep an eye on you. If you want commonly available bottle from a friendly retailer it doesn't make sense to come here. But if you're looking for something special it's worth it. read more

Don't go to this place they are extremely rude! I came to this place looking for a unique Rum because I'm building my bar at home. I came in and the clerk didn't speak or address my presence in the store. I asked where is his rum. He points by thw door and tells me the "affordable" Rum is over there in a very short a comdescending tone. I responded I didn't tell you my price point so can you just tell me where the rum is. He proceeds to turn and continuing talking to his friend in social conversation. Why would he not ask do I have a particular brand I'm looking for or what is my price point but just to point me to the affordable liquor by the door like I wasn't welcomed in his establishment was rude and quite honestly seemed like it was based on stereotypes. Based on the booze alone, this place would be four stars. If you have an odd spirit you're looking for, then this is your place in the District. I'm a bit of a booze geek, and even I was impressed. Cocchi Americano, Luxardo Amaretto, Taylors Falernum, Zucca, Bittermens Bitters, FRICKIN' Zucca! Their bourbon selection may be the best in the region and the beer selection is also very good. Also, it's so nice to see a place that doesn't have a wall of vodka, all of which tastes virtually the same but markets itself through celeb endorsement and fancy packaging. Ugh, stupid, stupid, vodka. That said, Scotch selection is a bit weak and the prices on everything are a bit high, though that's not unusual for DC. What really ticks me off though is that the two times I've been there, the staff has been really unfriendly. The first time I told the guy I was just walking back from lunch and stopped in to see the place because I hadn't been in before. I told him he had great selection and he just shrugged. I smiled and told him I lived a few blocks over and I'd have to make a place in my monthly booze budget just for his store and he just stared at me, not even cracking a smile, before going back to looking at his smart phone. Look, I know it wasn't a piece of comic gold, but I basically just told him he had a great store, I live in the neighborhood, and I was looking forward to becoming a regular customer: how about at least saying thanks and we hope we can help you find whatever you need, or something like that? I work in MoCo, where the folks who run the County stores just seem like hateful people, but the selection is good and the booze is dirt cheap. I'm used to unfriendly employees at a county store and put up with it for the price. However, if you're going to open a high-end booze store in the middle of a neighborhood in DC, you might want to consider being a bit more friendly to the folks who come into your store. Oh, and the second time I had a hard time even finding someone who worked there. Walking out with a bottle of booze would not have been hard. My other beef is that a lot of stuff has no price tag. I know a bottle of Zucca is not going to be a couple of bucks, okay, so how about letting me know what the damage is before I bring it to the register? Otherwise, I'll just swing by Ace Beverages up near AU or order from BevMo, DrinkUpNY, or some other site where I know the price and tend to get a decent deal, even when shipping and handling come into play. Very poor customer service despite a nice collection of spirits. We tried several things at the tastings tonight and were told that they were 10 percent off today. We mentioned that we were going to grab a bite and a movie and would return before they closed to buy a bottle of FEW rye and a ginger liqueur. Both salesmen doing the tastings stressed that the sale was only for today. We repeated that we would be back just before closing. When we returned just before closing the store staff member refused to give us the discount because he said it was applicable only durjng the tasting period. We told him that no one told us that and that we were very clear that we would be back late for the bottles. He kept repeating that it was only for the tasting period. I will probably never buy anything there again if they can not treat their customers better. It was their mistake and they refused to make good on it. read more
