The employees follow you around like they're expecting you to steal everything in sight. Then they high pressure sale you like rug bazaar salesmen. And if they don't have what you're looking for they act disgusted that you don't buy their suggestion. This place has no idea what polite customer service is. They're bullies. One shopper accidentally knocked over and broke a jar of bitters that was perched precariously on a display next to the register. The manager or owner came over with a very threatening sort of Eastern European Bond thug enforcer attitude demanding "Who's gonna pay for dis? Huh?" Ugly. I just walked out. I walked in here and went to check out the bottles. I was awkwardly followed upstairs by an employee who literally shadowed me as I walked around looking at the bottles. When I finally asked if they had a particular bottle of whiskey, the guy didn't understand me and just pointed to a bottle of Bullet 10 year and said, "it's 10 years old"...it wasn't even at all what I asked for or wanted and thanks for the generic suggestion. I will never come back here; the employees are very rude, make you feel like you're being watched for shoplifting and clearly aren't knowledgeable about their supply or able to make good suggestions. read more

There are literally no people friendlier than George, Rosani Leo and Gudja they are so helpful and wonderful! George has the most interesting selection of wines and spirits around, genuinely unique stuff that other stores don't have as well as excellently priced bargains. I always find something fantastic here, the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming and they always have really neat tastings going on. I'd like to see some rare 22s @ room temp that I can't find anywhere else (which I didn't). Good selection, yeah for sure they have good beer here. It's a good location and they certainly have some quality products. However, this is pretty much a reiteration of the good beer selections one can find at every good beer shop anywhere. I like the selection of 6 packs, and if you are looking for something drinkable and cold you can certainly find it here. The wines are alright but nothing crazy. I think I was most excited about the fun yet quaint liquor area. Overall I don't think this will be my first stop for alcohol. However, I am excited about the prospects of a tasting room upstairs...now getting a license for that...good luck!!! read more

Batch 13 has a lot going for it: a prime location on the burgeoning 14th St. Corridor; a spacious, clean, well lit retail space; and an interesting selection of wines, spirits, and beer just waiting to be bought up by Washingtonians with discerning tastes and some money to throw around. So, why isn't Batch 13 my favorite package store in the District trumping Schneider's? To be sure, Batch 13 has a top-notch selection of small batch spirits that's pretty much second to none. If you're looking for that obscure whiskey or gin, this place likely has it. Its beer selection has a nice range of craft beers. Conversely, the wine selection is ho-hum. It's eclectic and has wines representing most of the major wine regions, but it's very small compared to Total Wines, Schneider's, and even Whole Foods. However, Batch 13 loses out on the most important factor when doing an apples to apples comparison with Schneider's...price. For some items it was the same. However, on this trip, the item I was specifically looking for was $4 cheaper at Schneider's. This wasn't intended to be an advertisement for Schneider's, but for Batch 13 to be the best it must beat the best...and in this case it just didn't. 3.5 stars. read more

Batch 13 is a solid upscale liquor (and wine/beer) store on 14th st. Great, very diverse selection of liquors. Don't know why everyone's so upset about being followed. They keep their "high end" stuff upstairs and it's easy to find yourself completely alone up there. I'm sure they have a theft problem, and I'm sure they're running on thin margins and can't afford to lose high-end inventory. I don't blame them for sending someone upstairs when customers are up there. (Though they should send someone who can help with selection, rather than just someone to keep an eye on you.) This review is for the liquor section only, which they have a great selection of high-end and really interesting bottles that you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. However, the prices are so high here that I find myself using Batch 13 as a last resort for a purchase, and usually only use it for gifts (buying unique bottles). I want to love this place. Fabulous selection of beers, small but interesting wine selection. Great mixers. I would call this place dichotomy 13. Someone has a fabulous taste and a keen sense of the beer market and LOVES beer. Yet, 3 salespeople tonight had no clue about the beer. We bought the Flying Dog/Brew Dog Arms Race and the No Fear Pumpkin and also the Devils Backbone. They won numerous medals at the GABF. None of the guys there knew about any of these beers. We would have bought a LOT more had anyone been interested in telling us anything about beer other than point to the signs that said what category of beer was in the fridge. I will come back to buy after doing my own research but not for guidance. Chevy Chase Liquors has a shotgun selection of beers and they know their stuff so they can help me find something new. read more

My favorite liquor store in DC! They have everything I need, and the owner and staff are so helpful. I was looking for a bottle of gin and the staff let me try 4 different kinds before I make a decision. They also have local distillery coming in for tasting and promo (that's how I found out about Restorative Republic). They have a great selection of beer and wine, and to my surprise, also have a nice selection of alcohol, particularly boutique or higher end varieties; for example, went looking for gin, and didn't find any Beefeater or Gordon's, but they had Hendricks, Bulldog, and a whole bunch of small batch and other high end varieties. I am a gin drinker and Batch 13 has one of the best gin selections that I've ever seen. Most places stock Bombay, Tanqueray and maybe Hendricks. Batch 13 sells many indie brands and the owner or manager always seems to be adding something new to the mix. They also sell some unique things like tonic syrups that you don't often find in a retail space. If you are a gin drinker, then this store should be your go-to spot to buy it. read more

Batch 13 has one of the absolute best gin selections of any liquor store in the region and, though I'm happy to be corrected, I bet their bourbon selection is definitely top 5. I don't doubt that others had bad customer service but that was not my experience and likewise I'm sure there are marked up bottles but the prices of the gin and bourbons and vermouths that I was looking at didn't seem out of line especially when you are talking about an independent store and craft liquors. This is a good place to go to find bottles you can't get anywhere else. The guys in the store are pretty helpful and are always giving out samples. They can also help you find just what you're looking for and are pretty knowledgable about most of the products. I go here mostly to find unusual liquors to serve to guests or give as gifts. Tons of bitters, vodka, whiskeys & ryes too. I went to a wine tasting there Saturday afternoon and tasted a NEW wine to the US. SEXY Wine. It is Portuguese and delicious. Not that'd you'd expect much but when the guy helping you is continuously following you staring not saying anything that can get low key creepy and just plain annoying! I was sold a bottle of Blackadder Peat Reek which is priced online (and can be bought online much to my dismay) at $70 avg for a 750 ml bottle for $130 at this store. Batch 13 - I went to this store to purchase champagne to celebrate an event. The clerk didn't speak didn't acknowledge our presence. I inquired about the champagne on sale. The sales person said "I don't drink" and offered no information. He seemed to be more attentive to his cell phone. It was the worst customer service experience. I found other stores to be more informative regarding Wine and Spirits. What a horrible clerk this is a reflection on the owner and management. I want to like this place because I live 1 block from the store, but every time I go I have a bad experience with a staff member and it's always the same staff member--(or this could be the owner). I'm not sure if its just me or other people have had rude encounters so I decided to look at the store's reviews after my experience today. I know my neighbors love the staff and find them helpful. After reading the reviews I do have to agree that if you walk upstairs expect to be followed. In fact followed within 4 foot of your personal space. Make it 2 foot if you have a bag on you. I usually stop in while I'm on other errands so I'm always carrying other bags. I have not seen any other negative reviews on rudeness so maybe this employee/(owner) doesn't like my look for whatever reason. For example today I went in to buy a bottle of mezcal for a Spring cocktail that has a mix of smokey and sweet. They had several displays in the front window of mezcal. One dark mezcal(very expensive) and the other light (less expensive). I've always been under the impression if you are making a mixed cocktail its acceptable to go with a less expensive product. I get to the check out and ask the employee what's the main difference in the two mezcals?--he answered "the price". I said yes I noticed that. I asked if one was smokier than the other? --he answered "its a mezcal they are all smokey". I again said yes I know this much, but I'm making a spring cocktail and I want to make sure the smokey flavor comes thru, will the lighter mezcal work well for this? he answered--" I don't know I'm not a bar tender". I repeatedly have this condescending interaction with this employee everytime I ask questions on products in this store. In fact today I questioned myself before walking into the store to make another purchase, feeling a little anxious about being treated rudely if I needed to ask a question on a product. I keep going back because its so convenient to my home, even though its overpriced because its on 14th street. But after today I've decided they will no longer get my business. It seems that I'm the only person writing a review that has this experience, and i"m not a typical review writer, but I thought I'd throw it out there in case there is another neighborhood member wondering if they are alone in how they are treated in this store. read more

The creepiest experience I've ever had in a retail store. The store was deserted except for the clerk at the counter. As my girlfriend and I, a very unthreatening middle aged couple, entered the store another man appearing to channel Peter Lorre entered from the other front door. He followed us as we climbed the stairs to the second floor to check out the scotch and bourbon selection. We made eye contact as he hovered closely around us, trying to guess if he was policing us for the store or planning to rob us, but he stared, never said a word the entire time we were there. Neither did the clerk behind the counter. The prices were high. I understand about DC rents, but Laphroaig 18 for $159.99, really? After about 10 minutes of this the overall creepiness got to us and we left. A hard sell approach would have been welcomed at this point. As we left, we saw our creepy companion join the clerk behind the counter and noticed a family resemblance. If they are so suspicious of their potential customers, they should not be in retail.
