This may be the best Fish Fry in Western New York, and it comes from an old school dive bar in Kaisertown! Fish fries come over the plate with fries, potato salad, Mac salad, coleslaw and rye bread! Lately I've been getting the Cajun fish which comes with Spanish rice in addition to all those sides. It's a cash only establishment and during lent season, there is no takeout on Fridays or substitutions on fish fries. Also, the serving staff isn't super friendly but always efficient! And the decor can use some updating , parking can also be a challenge during peak hours! This is a cool neighborhood bar, known for having some good food. One of the foods they are known for is their beef on weck. I didn't have that. I did have some wings. I can see why they are NOT known for that. They weren't bad wings. They just aren't the wings people boast about when talking about Buffalo food. You can tell that they are an afterthought here. The bar was full of, what appeared to be regulars, who are much less concerned about making the new guy in the neighborhood bar feel welcomed than they are the game stats and shot counts. It was all good though. The bartender was attentive to that and worked his way past the wall of regulars to greet me and get my drink/food order. I ordered wings to go and a half of an assorted sub...(along with my double Ketels if you're looking for gift ideas). The bartender was also doing the table serving for me and the other table there. The sub was stuffed with this thick layer of meat as if I was getting the "Jake from State Farm" hookup. They make sure that a glutton like me has nothing bad to say about their sub. I had heard really good things about this place, but in my opinion it fell well short of deserving the hype. Caveat: I got takeout and it took me 30 minutes to get home in rush hour traffic, so I can't blame Wiechec's for the beer battered fish getting soggy. The fish itself actually tasted quite good. I only get a fish fry once a year and this one did hit the spot after such a long drought. The sides, on the other hand, ranged from basic to bad and none of the five were finished. Let me tell you, it is rare for my wife to throw away fries but more than half ended up in the trash. The loss of one star is ONLY because they are cash only (I rarely have cash, always use my card) and the parking can be tough, but other than that this is quite a hidden little jem. They have great food and good service. I got a beef on weck which was very well good. The meat was tender and the roll was soft and not overpowering which was good. It came just as the sandwich with a pickle but my husband was kind enough to share some fries. He got the fish fry and enjoyed it as well. It was a big piece of fish, beer-battered and fried to perfection. It comes with quite a bit of food including fries, cole slaw, mac salad, potato salad and bread. A pretty good value with all that food for about 12 bucks. If you're in the area definitely check this place out! The also have a killer seafood soup, unfortunately they didn't have it on Thursdays which is when we stopped by before the Sabres game, but if they have it, order it, you will thank me for it! read more

Well, I FINALLY made it to this fabled Kaisertown landmark. Classic "old Buffalo" corner tavern no-frills atmosphere. Challenging parking situation. Friends gave rave reviews to the beef on weck, piled high with tender meat. Other friend was impressed by her giant Greek chicken salad. I hadn't had a fish fry in forever, so I knew that's what I would be ordering before I even got here. The fish had everything you expect in a good fish fry - moist, flaky fish, crunchy beer batter - not too oily, not too thick. I could be wrong, but the side salads smacked of Miracle Whip. They were good enough, but I vastly prefer mayonnaise. The slice of pre-buttered rye bread took me back to my childhood, when on Friday nights at Grandma's house we would get takeout fish fries from the tavern next door, and there was that buttered slice of rye bread. If I remember correctly, the glass of wine was only $4. Four bucks for a glass of ANYTHING is a deal in my book. Our server was attentive and efficient. Oh, great. I have no idea how I've never reviewed this gem! No matter what you order you will probably have to much food. On my last visit I got an old stand by- the chicken noodle soup. I got a bowl because I was pretty hungry and it did not disappoint! They really fill that bowl up! I was nearly done before I realized I didn't get crackers, but I didn't NEED them. They usually do provide you with some. My boyfriend ordered a whole turkey sub and in his words it was "MEATY". I am so happy to be able eat indoors again. I work long hours and was so happy that we were able to grab a later dinner around 8 PM. That soup makes me happy just to think of it... Anyhow I've tried many menu items through the years and some highlights are any of the french fries (which you get a large serving of), the grilled cheese with bacon, BLT, Club Sandwich and chicken souvlaki pita. I've been here a handful of times and always have a great experience. It's that intimate, old school feeling of a family style place that really makes me happy. Brought my wife and our friend for their first time the other night. It was a Monday night and aside from a few people at the bar who were clearly regulars, it was pretty dead when we walked in. I ordered the au jus sandwich with a side of curly fries. My wife got chicken fingers and curly fries. And Anna ordered breaded wings and fries. I've only ever had their fish fry, which is as good as everyone says it is, and decided to branch out. The au jus sandwich was delicious. I have never had one before with cheese on it but now i can't imagine it without cheese. The beef was super tender and juicy and the bread was crazy fresh. I asked for some horseradish on the side as well. She brought it out with straight fries and apologized profusely, and immediately produced curly fries as well within 2 minutes. So I must've gotten a Beef on Weck on a bad day, I just was Wowed by how juicy and delicious the French dip was. It was thick with Beef and the caramelized onions were a great touch. I would easily put this as THE best French dip I've ever had. The Au Jus was great, but actually unneeded as this sandwich was SO juicy. Have been coming to Weichec's every couple months for lunch for probably 30 years. The interior and the menu pretty much stayed the same over the years (except obviously the prices, which are still extremely reasonable.) Their menu is extensive, as is their specials menu. It's an old standby that I'll patronize for years to come. I have never ordered anything that I hadn't been happy with. Favorites include Cajun chicken sandwich, turkey burger, chicken pita. You can even get a liverwurst sandwich! When available, the chicken parm is awesome. Everything is a huge portion. The cash only policy is a problem with some people, but I'm still a "carrier of cash". The parking lot is narrow and difficult to navigate, but street parking, and a school lot across the street in the evenings provide other options. You won't be sorry to give them a try. read more

It's hard to finish it on your own. The fries that come with it are little to be desired, but when you're eating a lovely piece of haddock the size of your arm, who is paying attention to fries? But let's talk about the Beef on Weck. The place was packed when I went in, so I opted for take out. It was quite an experience hanging at the bar waiting for my food, but an amusing one nonetheless. The service was great. The beef on weck is one of the best around. It's huge! I did not anticipate such a large sandwich, and the pricing was reasonable considering how much food you're getting. The roast beef was tender and juicy. The roll wasn't too hard, and the au jus didn't make the sandwich soggy, which is all I can really say when it comes down to it. By far the BEST fish fry in Buffalo! My boyfriend and I came in on a Friday evening around 4:00. The line was out the door. The bar was empty so we decided to sit there instead. Which I'm glad we did. We ordered two fish fry, and in less than 7 minutes and two sips of beer our food was already out to us. We were in and out in 40 minutes. The fish was thick and crispy, and all the sides were perfectly made. Not drenched in mayo. The only complaint that I have is that although sitting at the bar was very quick and convenient, the bar itself was so sticky and felt like it hasn't been cleaned in awhile. Also, the man sitting next to me spilled his beer all over me and my purse. The bar tenders we're apologetic but It was an accident seeing how busy it was with take out orders. Got the fish fry today... meh. Since buffalo is all about fish frys is def day there better around. They do give you all 4 sides here but tbh the sides weren't really that good. It takes a lot for this girl to throw away frys but I did. The Mac salad, potato salad and coleslaw were all a bit too sweet too so we basically tossed those as well. I went for the seafood soup, and WOW, did it deliver. I'm not sure why it's not called gumbo here, it seemed to have the requisite okra, a nice amount of seafood, and the sausage giving it some heat. This was as good as my Mom's signature party gumbo when we lived in MS. We also got a huge grilled pastrami and Swiss on rye, and a bowl of pulled pork soup. Both which were excellent. I called ahead for take-out and everything was ready when I arrived including the coleslaw and thousand Island dressing I had requested for the sandwich. The restaurant is so South Buffalo it looks like a movie set, it seemed warm and friendly, and with a great selection of soups seems like a perfect winter option. I would and did recommend them for fish fries, seafood gumbo and many other Wiechec's staples but the last 2 times I ate there the food was absolutely horrible... as well as the prices being jacked up. Today, sadly, was the last straw. I'll never take friends and family there again and I won't be ordering out either. I paid $18 for broiled fish dinner and it was cold (I picked it up on time and live blocks away), it tasted foul, it was a tiny 5-6oz portion compared to what I remember being double that, the potato salad was sparse and also watery (a first time), the cold slaw tasted off, the macaroni salad was the only decent thing and the fries were ice cold. The best food and experiences come from dives. That's an opinionated statement but I like to think its scientifically proven. Parking is awkward. Single lane which only leaves you enough room to back out into the street, assuming someone isn't blocking you in. You might what to just park in the street. Walk in a very old school bar with a big Polish dude handing out cheap drinks. I can honestly say I haven't heard the F bomb dropped so many times while sitting down for dinner. People sitting at the bar were upset that Notre Dame wasn't playing well. A dad eating with his young kids was none too pleased about this. I say this because you really get a glimpse of a old school bar scene with a sit down restaurant in the back (plus it may not be the best place to bring kids when the bar goers are all liquored up). I don't think the place has been updated in 30 years. Hostess who was also our waitress was very nice. I ordered the seafood jambalaya to start. Why on Earth a place called Wichec's is serving southern style soup is beyond me but it was incredible. Perfect spice served up nice and hot. It certainly didn't skimp out on the sausage and seafood either. I ordered the beer battered chicken sandwich thanks to recommendations by fellow Yelpers. I didn't see it on the menu which was surprising but the waitress said they'll make it as long as they're serving fish. It was incredible. A HUGE piece of fried chicken on a fresh roll with all the toppings you'd need. I was glad I got it. My GF got the fish fry which came with enough sides to feed a family. I'm honestly interested in trying something else on the menu just to see if the serving is just as big. Some things you should know: - good luck with parking. Just keep circling the area until you find something. - typical wait time on a Friday is 30-90 minutes. The bar area is sizable, will be packed with people waiting for a table, but has affordable mixed drinks and beer. - wait staff is very friendly, but don't get mad if they don't check in on you. You'll have to waive someone down for a refill or a check. Honestly, it's not a bad place to take a date. It will show her that you like small town places off the beaten path.
