This restaurant is super small, so I recommend making a reservation. Because it's so small inside, there was only one waitress. She was super nice! The menu is also small, and recently updated. There is an Asian influence that ends at the appetizers. We started with the wontons. These were a little underwhelming, but still good. We each got a pasta dish for dinner. Had a great dinner at SZND. First of all I think everyone working there was female and it was great vibe. We ordered the special small plate of the night which was octopus carpaccio and it was lovely. We also got the artichoke and crab small plate and it was truly one of the best vegetable forward dishes ever. Highly recommend this one. I had the halibut over a puttanesca style chunky sauce and it was delicious and huge and I could only eat half after the small plates. It was very good the next day as leftovers. Husband had the duck confit that came with roasted potatoes and a mushroom tapenade. The mushrooms stood out and were a great addition to crispy outside, creamy inside potatoes and perfectly cooked duck legs. Many of the mixed drinks come in highball glasses which was a very welcome surprise on a hot day. Every drink was well mixed and tasty. Short version: come for the friendly service, drinks, and apps. Avoid entrees, especially the Wagyu steak. Read on if you want details. We came for a group birthday dinner last Saturday night. I made reservations over a month in advance and made several changes throughout and they were super accommodating. A friend from out of town ordered balloons from Party City to be delivered and the restaurant was kind enough to tie them to martini glasses filled with marbles and it looked amazing. There were 10 of us so I'm going to focus on the dishes that the 6 of us had collectively on my end of the table since I never got a chance to really talk to the 4 people on the other end. For apps, we basically ordered one of each from the menu. Everything was good, but the wontons and pork belly were especially delicious and we ordered seconds and thirds of those. Our server forgot the yellowfin tuna but by the time we realized it our entrees were about to be served so we decided to just let it go. For entrees, one person ordered the airline chicken and enjoyed it. A couple of us ordered the seafood risotto - the portions were small, the risotto was overcooked (had the texture of rice pudding) and so were the seafood in it. Now, the biggest complaint of the night were all the people that ordered the Wagyu top sirloin entree, which was advertised as A5 Wagyu. Unfortunate for the restaurant, we were a group of international traveling foodies, including a retired professional chef from Toronto. Everyone unanimously agreed that there was no way that the steak was Wagyu whatsoever. I tried a piece of it and I chewed for almost a minute before I had to spit it back out (which I NEVER EVER do in restaurants, btw) because I couldn't break it down enough to swallow it. I'm going to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt that they were scammed by their meat vendor, although the chef really should have been able to tell the difference. Plus, all the sirloin entrees were barely eaten by the people who ordered them yet no one wanted boxes to-go and we made a comment to the server about how it was like chewing rubber but he obviously did not relay that message to the chef or management whatsoever. We didn't escalate as we didn't want to make a scene, but that was a total miss on the restaurant's part. A few other things to note: there was only one single unisex bathroom for the entire restaurant which is just not enough during peak time at full capacity where there could be 40-50 people including the patio dining area. I also didn't like how the front door stays open the entire time because the AC isn't strong enough and it starts to get hot inside, plus all the flies and bugs. The reason why I prefer dining indoors is for the comfort of a bug-free and stable temperature environment, and that totally took away a "fine-dining" experience. Our server was friendly and did his best to accommodate our large group, though the bar was a little slow. A couple of people waited so long for their drinks (at least 10 minutes) that they thought our server forgot to order them so they walked up to the bar to get drinks, only to have their previously ordered drinks delivered 5 minutes later. Obviously, the bar prioritizes patrons at the bar over the table orders? I'm not sure if that's common practice but I thought that was poorly executed. Got to try this lovely restaurant for dinner on a work trip. This place is so gorgeously decorated, it looks like a restaurant designed by Dior. Service was very friendly as well. The food here is so amazing, I was surprised my coworker and I were the only people there. They need much more love! The baked Brie was delicious and melty, spreads perfectly on the well toasted bread & the toppings complemented well in taste and texture. Great little spot, cute inside and intimate. Honestly this would have easily slid its way to a top restaurant in Buffalo for me except for a couple items. The Wontons were cold and a hard to eat (additionally it is not my personal preference to have a thicker aioli as the sauce for this). Second, my husband twice had to return his ribeye steak he received medium well when he ordered medium rare. The cut of meat being very thin and tough for a Ribeye. The waiter had stated it was prime but there's no way it appeared to be prime. Hopefully the difficulties with the steak are because they told us they recently switched to ribeye from a strip but regardless it for sure not worth $54. However, they were apologetic and did remove it from the bill because at that point we were just ready to leave. Onto the positive- the blackened artichokes were one of the best apps we've had in Buffalo and the peanut butter pie was to die for. I personally ordered the pork chop and it was huge and delicious with the potatoes and vegetable sides being divine. Very chic place on Hertel, close to all the action. I loved the atmosphere with the fun pillows and comfy seats. My friend and I shared the Brie small plate and had a couple cocktails. Perfect spot for a chill Wednesday evening! The Brie was very delicious. I would've liked if it was a little more runny melted. I also did not thing the focaccia bread was necessary since it's wrapped in dough, we barely touched the bread. Five and dime was great. I thought the mule was a bit tarte for my taste. Excellent! That one word sums up our dining experience at Sznd. What took us so long to come here? Everything from the atmosphere, service, and food exceeded my expectations. Beautiful decor and even super comfortable chairs. Our server Nicole was great. When deciding what wine to order she patiently explained a couple and then when I thought I knew what I wanted she brought me over a generous sample to try. I'm glad she did because I didn't like it as much as I thought I would and ended up with another kind. Lol nothing worst that trying to enjoy your meal with a wine you're not crazy about. Much appreciated. On to the food. I started with a Cajun shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were sautéed nicely and served over a delicious polenta. It was all seasoned with a perfect Cajun kick. My main meal was house made fettuccine and scallops. The fettuccine was cooked perfectly.. The parmesan cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and lemon white wine sauce tied all the flavors together. And the piece of garlic bread on top was great for soaking up all of that great sauce. The others at my table got prime rib, pork chops, and salmon. All seemed to enjoy their meals. A couple of desserts were ordered, creme brulee and sea salt carmel chocolate tart. Both looked delightful. The evening had a bumpy beginning. First we ran into unexpected traffic at one point, but they were cool about pushing our reservation back to 6:15, and also ready to seat us when we arrived at 6:05. They originally seated us by a heater on the patio, but were able to accommodate my husband's request to eat inside. I only wish he'd asked before I tripped into my chair squeezing past the heater on an uneven path with a slight slope. It's an awkward space. Things went smoothly from there. We shared the pork belly appetizer. It was tender with great flavor. My husband was a big fan of the BBQ pork chop and puts it at #2 in his favorite meals (my holiday prime rib is #1, just saying). He did wish the asparagus was seasoned and the potatoes had more flavor but the pork chop melted in his mouth. I had the scallops and fettuccini. The scallops were big and plump. The sauce was a little too salty, but the scallops made up for it. The wines are a generous pour. Service was excellent. We really liked the ambiance and use of space inside. I brought my aunt here to celebrate her 50th birthday. I am so glad I was able to treat her to a meal at SZND. We arrived about a half hour earlier than our reservations and asked if we would like to be seated. We chose a table indoors and soaked in the awesome ambiance. I really love the vibes of this place and it is like a NYC restaurant. When you walk in, it feels like you are instantly transported to the city. Also, the staff are ridiculously friendly. I ordered the campfire sling again for my drink, and it was incredibly. My aunt had the blackberry and mint spritzer. She commented that it was refreshing. For dinner, I went with the airline chicken. It was a toss up between that and the salmon, but I decided to go with the airline chicken because it came with jalapeno corn risotto, and that sounded delicious. And it was. I'm glad I made that choice. My aunt went with the veal and pepper ragu and enjoyed the homemade pasta. We had a great time. This is a place where you don't have to rush and dinner is paced well. Come one SZND..you blew our minds with our meals. We have been to Michelin stars and James Beard restaurants but damn was this food good. First off signature cocktails were very tasty - and set the tone for a good meal. My wife was not that hungry so she got some small plates. The ahi tuna was a very large portion and she was totally satisfied as a main dish. I had the artichoke with crab and shared it with her and it was very tasty. My main was the veal ragu over hand main fettuccine which was very good. I would have liked the option for a little more spice but that is personal preference. One of the worst meals in recent memory. I'm baffled by the experience we had vs the reviews from other Yelpers. The food ranged from inedible wontons that were initially sent out burnt , subsequently sent back and returned as a combination of burnt and not burnt ones, none of which were good to the main course which wasn't any better. My husband ordered the duck which was deep fried overcooked and served in a pool of what was supposed to be risotto but was actually a pile of rice and a mushroom soup type of mixture. My fish was a bit overcooked but the sauce had decent flavor as did the salad. This why I'm giving them 2 stars. The other issue as the lighting in the back where we were sat. There was an obnoxious recessed light shining in my husband's face to top it off in addition to the fact that I don't think there was any heat on in the place. It's been over a year and I'm still thinking of sznd - specifically the dessert pictured - and finally was able to come back in March! Unfortunately I'm no longer able to eat shellfish (which compromises a lot of the menu) but the cabernet I had was divine and the bolognese was probably some of the best I've ever had! Great unique restaurant tucked away down a side street on Hertel Avenue. Went mid week and popped into a table for myself and my husband. The staffing seems lean, just maybe the cooks in the back, a waitress, and someone working the bar. But even with a lean staff the service was friendly and the meal came out quick. OMG. I had been dying to try this restaurant and I was so excited to bring a friend here for his birthday. The older we get, the only real joy we get is from food (lol) and even more so if it's anew restaurant. One of the most impressive things about this particular restaurant was that I called on Sunday to make a reservation for Tuesday not realizing it was closed. Well, on Tuesday morning I got a call back and a voicemail from the restaurant requesting a return phone call to follow up with my initial call. I was completely blown away by this! I called back and got a reservation for the time frame I requested. Talk about impressive. I was so excited for that return call. I was going to call back anyway but that was super helpful and appreciated. The location is easy to find. Literally just off of Hertel Ave, which in my opinion makes it even better. It's close enough to the Shenanigans but not right in the midst of it. We walked in and fell in love immediately. The decor us wonderful!!! The colors are very calm and mellow with a chicness that's not too over done. Without even tasting the food, we immediately agreed that we'd be back. We were greeted immediately by a young lady named Jenna who offered us indoor or outdoor seating and we opted for outdoor. There's a cute little patio with about 6 tables and we were fortunate enough to get one. For a Tuesday night, it was quite busy. Once seated we were given time to review the menus. Within moments we knew exactly what we wanted. We opted for some cocktails and to start with two small plates, the blackened artichokes and wontons. For dinner my friend got the summer ravioli and I got the jambalaya. I wanted the cubano sandwich but they ran out (another reason to go back) so having researched the menu well in advance anyway, I went for plan b. Our drinks came first and while I can say mine was good, I can't remember the name of it to save my life. But we came for the food anyway, right? So the wontons and artichokes came out after a moderate wait time (this is a young restaurant and there isn't tons of staff which I knew going in). Oh, my was it worth the wait. The artichokes were amazing!! The spicy kick of flavor was so good. They were so tender that they just fell apart when you sliced into them. The wontons were small but mighty! Jam packed with flavor. They were not hot like I thought they would be but the chili aioli had enough kick to keep me interested. The kimchi was wonderful. A nice little crunch of flavor that was maybe better than the chicken!! Then came dinner. My jambalaya was slammin'! It had the heat that I wanted. And the flavor was so amazing. There were nice hearty pieces of shrimp and sausage in every bite, the rice was cooked to perfection and I was doing a happy dance by the end of the first bite. Cubano, who?? My friend loved his summer ravioli. It was light and tender with an avocado filling. I liked the ravioli more than the filling itself. It was made of roasted corn and squash and cauliflower. It was a very unique flavor that I really enjoyed. As did my friend because his plate was clean!! Overall I would of course go again. Seasoned has a few different meanings to it, to prepare Food with Skill, Technique & Precision, to enhance the flavor of a Dish so you'll be able to taste it more Clearly or to present in a Sophisticated Manner. Here they rearrange the word into SZND to make it sound cooler and for a way to draw in Customers. Technically speaking this place is not on Hertel like it says in the Address, its off the Intersection of Hertel and Norwalk right behind the Her Story Store. Park on the side, down the Street, one of Hertel's Sidewalks, heck even a few blocks away. We walk in and to see one of the Smallest Space I've ever seen, 12 Chairs at the Bar and 5 Small Tables on the other side with a white bench lined with Pillows for your Back to rest upon. If that wasn't enough, the Kitchen in the Back was even smaller, enough for about 3 People to move around in. The Owner Andrew told us sit down, he went over the Specials and gave us a few minutes to decide what we wanted to Order. This may surprise you but none of the Cocktails interested me at all, nor was I in the Mood for a Beer or Glass of Wine. So for the first time in a while I just had Water with my Meal. Aside from me, my Grandma, Rick and our guest Scott, we split 5 Small Plates between 4 People. Scott getting their Poached Gulf Shrimp with Jasmine Rice in a Thai Curry and Coconut Broth. Cajun Rubbed blackened Artichokes with Crab Meat and Green Goddess dressing, Braised Chicken Wontons with Kimchi and Sambal Chili Aioli, Lentil Fritters with Watercress Puree, Sweet Yogurt Sauce, Sour Cherry Syrup and Papadum Tuile and Vietnamese style Calamari with Nuoc Cham Sauce, Lime, Crispy Wontons and a Seaweed Salad tossed in a Sesame Oil. The Shrimp was staying afloat on the mound of Rice, Sweet and Tender the Curry didn't have as much Heat and Scott wished there was more than 4 Shrimp. The Artichokes came charred (in a good way) packed with Cajun Heat topped with Sweet Crab and a Garlicky Green Dressing to dip in. Wontons were wrapped up like little Presents, open one up and you'll get Juicy Chicken then smear it across the Aioli to get that Heat you've been asking for. The Lentil Fritters looked like Giant Meatballs but weren't (obviously), nice to have a Vegetarian Dish with your Meal. Crisp on the outside but soft inside like a Falafel (technically they are), with 3 Different Sauces (Peppery, Sweet & Tart) to give more Flavor with each bite you take, the Tuile given added more Texture. The Calamari (fried in Tempura) while the Batter was Crispy the Squid was a bit Chewy, the Nuoc Cham Sauce packed big Umami Flavor, with some Bitter Greens but the big turn off of this Dish was the Seaweed Salad (still Slimy to me). For our Entrees: Grandma got herself a Hearty Plate of Braised Beef Short Rib Ragu over Black Pepper Fettucini with Red Wine Demi-Glace and Gremolata. Melt in your Mouth meat mixed with Mild Pasta along with subtle hit of Garlic & Herbs. Rick got a Double Boned Pork Chop topped with a Housemade BBQ Sauce with Bacon Crumble, Smashed Potatoes and Tri-Color Carrots. What better than being a served a Jurassic sized Pork Chop topped with more Pork, Crunch from the Potatoes and Sweet Rich Carrots. Scott ordered the Crab stuffed Sole Fish with a Lemon Beurre-Blanc, Spring Farro Salad and Pickled French Beans. You can never have too much Seafood, Fish stuffed with Crab with a light Citrus sauce, you would have Sole-d me on that and I wouldn't Crab about it. As for me I got Butter Poached Lobster Tail with Butternut Squash Risotto, Sweet Tomato Jam, Feta Cheese and a Curry Honey Glaze. Sweet Lobster perched on top of its own Tail with Richness from the Tomato, Smooth and Creamy Risotto, Feta was Mild and reminiscent of Buffalo Snow in the Wintertime. The Curry Honey glaze that was drizzled so generously around the Plate had a good Sweet-Heat thing going on. Even though the Lobster was the main Protein, I only had 5 Pieces (wish there was a few more). To finish off the Meal on a Sweet Note, I got a slice of Chocolate-Peanut Butter Pie. Think about eating a giant slice of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, it had that Sweet creamy rich Decadence happening with each Bite although I just left the sliced-up Strawberry on the side of my Plate alone. I was so excited to try SZND once I checked it out online and read some of the reviews. I am so glad we made it a stop on our Buffalo trip! If I could only recommend one restaurant in Buffalo it would be SZND!!! First of all, the restaurant decor and interior and simply lovely. We really loved the atmosphere! Waitstaff was limited and I have to give kudos to our amazing waitress who was also hosting and holding down most of the establishment (moderately busy on a Saturday at 7). There were no specials, so it is true that the menu may feel "limited" in comparison with the lengthy menus that some of us may be used to at other establishments. SZND really demonstrates that it's not quantity, it's quality that matters. My friend and I split the blackened artichokes and Cajun shrimp for dinner. Everything was plated exquisitely! Oh and for cocktails I had a Pinot noir while my friend enjoyed what she called an amazing gin and tonic. For mains I went with the linguine and scallops. This is hands down the cleanest restaurant I have ever been to. There wasn't even a cobweb on any of the lighting fixtures. Friendliness - the waiter / bar tender was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. He spoke with confidence. Atmosphere - I was on the fence here giving a point. It's very clean and pretty. There is a bar taking up half the restaurant and the patrons at the bar were very loud. There is not much to absorb the sound so it made it difficult to carry on a conversation. There is a tv at the bar and some music playing. The radiant heat was a bit overwhelming. Food - hubby and I both had the skirt steak. It was ok. It tasted good but it wasn't $40 good. There was 3 spears of asparagus and one very over cooked latke on the plate as well. There was very little food. I also had a pomegranate and orange drink. I can't wait to go back here. Honestly, I eat at this place once a week and never get tired of it. Loved the wine list--not huge but had wines you don't see other places and the two glasses we had were delish! We began with the crab artichoke. Hot damn--no way we got back and not get this. Heck I'd order it for dessert. Then we made the difficult decisions of what to order. I had the seafood rissoto. My wife had the seabass. We couldn't figure out who made the better decision. We ate our leftovers for breakfast and ooed and awwwed all over again. I am a rissotto snob and I don't think even I made rissotto this good. The seafood was all cooked to perfection, not a second longer, not a second less could have improved it. The dessert was okay, good but not as good as the dinner. Holy moly everything on the menu is delicious. I can't say enough good things about the service and the decor in the restaurant is so carefully put together and it shows. It's a small place - inside it probably only sits around 30 people including the bar so it's best to make a reservation. I always start off with a spicy margarita and it's by far the best margarita I've had in buffalo. It's just the right amount sweet as it is tart and the jalapeños are always fresh and tasty. I've had almost everything on the menu and I've never once left disappointed with anything. My favorite appetizer is definitely the blackened artichokes. They come perfectly seasoned and charred topped with lump crab, arugula and some delicious creamy green dressing. The blackened cod, scallops with fettuccine or the sea bass are my go to entrees. The blackened cod is always cooked to perfection and comes in a miso broth with spinach and fried onions. The scallops and house made fettuccine is what I always recommend to my friends who have never been to sznd. I've had multiple friends reach out saying how much they dreamed of that pasta after having it - so you know it's good! I'm not a big desert fan but Andy, our server, always recommends the carrot cake when they have it and it's always fresh and delicious. I came here after several recommendations the week before the blizzard and completely forgot to add my review. Five stars. Tens across the board. First of all, it's so gorgeous inside. You instantly feel better being inside this restaurant because of the decor and vibe. I also love how cozy it is. Secondly, the service was top notch. I started with a Palomo cocktail and we got the baked Brie and focaccia to start. When I tell you it was incredible... we scraped the plate. That baked Brie + cranberries + honey and maple glaze? Fantastic! For entrees, I got the risotto and chicken, which I liked. The flavor of the risotto was unreal and the chicken breast was juicy. My only issue was that the chicken was under seasoned, but honestly, the risotto made up for it. My friend got the braised short rib ragu and it was perfection. And a huge portion. We came here for reservations we made. They couldn't find our reservations however they were able to seat and accommodate us which was great! The drinks and food that each of us got were really good and fresh - you can get a glimpse into the kitchen and see each dish is made to order. The inside is small, but decorated well. Had a little app/wine dinner here. We had a reservation for about 6:30pm. Despite a semi-full restaurant/ bar area, it was absolutely freezing at our table (which was pretty far inside the restaurant and not anywhere near the door). Kept my coat on the whole time which was a little awkward while eating dinner and having wine. After warming up a bit with dinner, I will say it was pretty good for the couple things we ordered. The blackened artichokes were great and were served with lump crab meat which was a welcome addition. We also had the Korean chicken wontons which were nicely crispy. Overall great atmosphere, food, drinks, and service. I just would prefer warmth and non-chattering teeth during my next visit. read more

What a nice spot. Not on Hertel Avenue, But on a side street. It was difficult to find. I had very high hopes when I walked in there with my son. It was on a weekday early. 5ish. It is a very contemporary, chic small restaurant. I could see people working in the kitchen. I asked the hostess/server if that was the owner in the kitchen, and she said yes. We chose to sit outside as it was a beautiful night. The menu was simple but very diversified. We ordered mussels which came in a really nice broth with some andouille sausage and some thick cut buttered toast. I would have to say that was my favorite dish of the evening. I also ordered the artichokes, which I liked, but I felt they were over cooked, and did not have a fresh appearance or taste. For entrées, I chose the pan roasted scallops with fettuccine Alfredo. My son had the butter poached lobster tail with a squash risotto. My scallops were good. I received three large scallops even though photos online showed four. I enjoyed it very much. My sons poached lobster tail did not appear fresh. It wasn't appetizing at all, and he did not like it. While very sweet,the squash risotto was was good. A large party was accumulating inside the restaurant, and I don't think that they were prepared to handle it. There was only two people in the front of the house. I didn't look at the bill when it was presented to me by my server, I just put my credit card down. I did look at it before I signed it and I noticed that both of our entrées were three dollars more than listed on the menu. I brought the check inside to the server, and she said she did not ring it up the other host/server did. He did not say a word to me, he just turned around and processed a credit, and a new charge that reflected the price on the menu. I did not like the way that that went down, as an explanation was necessary. I would like to go back, because this restaurant deserves another opportunity. I would like to see the quality improve next time. Both of our entrées were $36, and the appetizers were $14-$16 if I recall.
