Duck confit
Samantha C.

Had a great dinner at SZND. First of all I think everyone working there was female and it was great vibe. We ordered the special small plate of the night which was octopus carpaccio and it was lovely. We also got the artichoke and crab small plate and it was truly one of the best vegetable forward dishes ever. Highly recommend this one. I had the halibut over a puttanesca style chunky sauce and it was delicious and huge and I could only eat half after the small plates. It was very good the next day as leftovers. Husband had the duck confit that came with roasted potatoes and a mushroom tapenade. The mushrooms stood out and were a great addition to crispy outside, creamy inside potatoes and perfectly cooked duck legs. Many of the mixed drinks come in highball glasses which was a very welcome surprise on a hot day. Every drink was well mixed and tasty. The five and dime and the blackberry mint spritzer are great summer choices.

Short version: come for the friendly service, drinks, and apps. Avoid entrees, especially the Wagyu steak. Read on if you want details. We came for a group birthday dinner last Saturday night. I made reservations over a month in advance and made several changes throughout and they were super accommodating. A friend from out of town ordered balloons from Party City to be delivered and the restaurant was kind enough to tie them to martini glasses filled with marbles and it looked amazing. There were 10 of us so I'm going to focus on the dishes that the 6 of us had collectively on my end of the table since I never got a chance to really talk to the 4 people on the other end. For apps, we basically ordered one of each from the menu. Everything was good, but the wontons and pork belly were especially delicious and we ordered seconds and thirds of those. Our server forgot the yellowfin tuna but by the time we realized it our entrees were about to be served so we decided to just let it go. For entrees, one person ordered the airline chicken and enjoyed it. A couple of us ordered the seafood risotto - the portions were small, the risotto was overcooked (had the texture of rice pudding) and so were the seafood in it. Now, the biggest complaint of the night were all the people that ordered the Wagyu top sirloin entree, which was advertised as A5 Wagyu. Unfortunate for the restaurant, we were a group of international traveling foodies, including a retired professional chef from Toronto. Everyone unanimously agreed that there was no way that the steak was Wagyu whatsoever. I tried a piece of it and I chewed for almost a minute before I had to spit it back out (which I NEVER EVER do in restaurants, btw) because I couldn't break it down enough to swallow it. I'm going to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt that they were scammed by their meat vendor, although the chef really should have been able to tell the difference. Plus, all the sirloin entrees were barely eaten by the people who ordered them yet no one wanted boxes to-go and we made a comment to the server about how it was like chewing rubber but he obviously did not relay that message to the chef or management whatsoever. We didn't escalate as we didn't want to make a scene, but that was a total miss on the restaurant's part. A few other things to note: there was only one single unisex bathroom for the entire restaurant which is just not enough during peak time at full capacity where there could be 40-50 people including the patio dining area. I also didn't like how the front door stays open the entire time because the AC isn't strong enough and it starts to get hot inside, plus all the flies and bugs. The reason why I prefer dining indoors is for the comfort of a bug-free and stable temperature environment, and that totally took away a "fine-dining" experience. Our server was friendly and did his best to accommodate our large group, though the bar was a little slow. A couple of people waited so long for their drinks (at least 10 minutes) that they thought our server forgot to order them so they walked up to the bar to get drinks, only to have their previously ordered drinks delivered 5 minutes later. Obviously, the bar prioritizes patrons at the bar over the table orders? I'm not sure if that's common practice but I thought that was poorly executed. All in all, it was a wonderful night spend with friends, and we may return just for the apps! PS. it's pronounced "Seasoned".

Got to try this lovely restaurant for dinner on a work trip. This place is so gorgeously decorated, it looks like a restaurant designed by Dior. Service was very friendly as well. The food here is so amazing, I was surprised my coworker and I were the only people there. They need much more love! The baked Brie was delicious and melty, spreads perfectly on the well toasted bread & the toppings complemented well in taste and texture. The pasta is made fresh here and was so delicious to bite into , the scallops were just the gems on top. The pork belly was heavenly, I don't think I've ever had better!

Very chic place on Hertel, close to all the action. I loved the atmosphere with the fun pillows and comfy seats. My friend and I shared the Brie small plate and had a couple cocktails. Perfect spot for a chill Wednesday evening! The Brie was very delicious. I would've liked if it was a little more runny melted. I also did not thing the focaccia bread was necessary since it's wrapped in dough, we barely touched the bread. Five and dime was great. I thought the mule was a bit tarte for my taste. My friend enjoyed the mint drink but said it was a little bit on the sweeter side. Desserts were sooo good. Creme brûlée and chocolate mouse brownie. Highly recommend both.

Absolutely, one of the best restaurants in Western NY. If you haven't been to SZND yet. You truly are doing yourself a disservice. Andrew (owner) and staff, does a amazing job when it comes to service and food. The food is creative but yet, simple.

Roasted Chicken

I decided to go for a quiet dinner by myself here and after leaving, I've never been more pleased with my choice. Beautiful dining room with such welcoming staff. Jenna was a terrific server and the food was absolutely delicious. Their Sznd Salad was my absolute favorite, and the fondue for dessert was so much fun! Would absolutely go again!!!

Excellent! That one word sums up our dining experience at Sznd. What took us so long to come here? Everything from the atmosphere, service, and food exceeded my expectations. Beautiful decor and even super comfortable chairs. Our server Nicole was great. When deciding what wine to order she patiently explained a couple and then when I thought I knew what I wanted she brought me over a generous sample to try. I'm glad she did because I didn't like it as much as I thought I would and ended up with another kind. Lol nothing worst that trying to enjoy your meal with a wine you're not crazy about. Much appreciated. On to the food. I started with a Cajun shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were sautéed nicely and served over a delicious polenta. It was all seasoned with a perfect Cajun kick. My main meal was house made fettuccine and scallops. The fettuccine was cooked perfectly.. The parmesan cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and lemon white wine sauce tied all the flavors together. And the piece of garlic bread on top was great for soaking up all of that great sauce. The others at my table got prime rib, pork chops, and salmon. All seemed to enjoy their meals. A couple of desserts were ordered, creme brulee and sea salt carmel chocolate tart. Both looked delightful. Great service continued through the meal with water being refilled and enough checks seeing if we needed anything without hovering. Also very friendly. Can't wait to go back! 2021-125

The evening had a bumpy beginning. First we ran into unexpected traffic at one point, but they were cool about pushing our reservation back to 6:15, and also ready to seat us when we arrived at 6:05. They originally seated us by a heater on the patio, but were able to accommodate my husband's request to eat inside. I only wish he'd asked before I tripped into my chair squeezing past the heater on an uneven path with a slight slope. It's an awkward space. Things went smoothly from there. We shared the pork belly appetizer. It was tender with great flavor. My husband was a big fan of the BBQ pork chop and puts it at #2 in his favorite meals (my holiday prime rib is #1, just saying). He did wish the asparagus was seasoned and the potatoes had more flavor but the pork chop melted in his mouth. I had the scallops and fettuccini. The scallops were big and plump. The sauce was a little too salty, but the scallops made up for it. The wines are a generous pour. Service was excellent. We really liked the ambiance and use of space inside. Definitely request inside when you make a reservation.

I brought my aunt here to celebrate her 50th birthday. I am so glad I was able to treat her to a meal at SZND. We arrived about a half hour earlier than our reservations and asked if we would like to be seated. We chose a table indoors and soaked in the awesome ambiance. I really love the vibes of this place and it is like a NYC restaurant. When you walk in, it feels like you are instantly transported to the city. Also, the staff are ridiculously friendly. I ordered the campfire sling again for my drink, and it was incredibly. My aunt had the blackberry and mint spritzer. She commented that it was refreshing. For dinner, I went with the airline chicken. It was a toss up between that and the salmon, but I decided to go with the airline chicken because it came with jalapeno corn risotto, and that sounded delicious. And it was. I'm glad I made that choice. My aunt went with the veal and pepper ragu and enjoyed the homemade pasta. We had a great time. This is a place where you don't have to rush and dinner is paced well. I definitely recommend coming here with people you can have a wonderful conversation with and enjoy spending time together.

Come one SZND..you blew our minds with our meals. We have been to Michelin stars and James Beard restaurants but damn was this food good. First off signature cocktails were very tasty - and set the tone for a good meal. My wife was not that hungry so she got some small plates. The ahi tuna was a very large portion and she was totally satisfied as a main dish. I had the artichoke with crab and shared it with her and it was very tasty. My main was the veal ragu over hand main fettuccine which was very good. I would have liked the option for a little more spice but that is personal preference. Did I mention the great service and the fact that the bill was super affordable??!?!? If you are in Buffalo and want a good meal skip Elmwood and drive to Hertel and park infront of SZND.

Neapolitan dessert - SO GREAT! Not a great picture because I just wanted to eat it!
Allison B.

It's been over a year and I'm still thinking of sznd - specifically the dessert pictured - and finally was able to come back in March! Unfortunately I'm no longer able to eat shellfish (which compromises a lot of the menu) but the cabernet I had was divine and the bolognese was probably some of the best I've ever had! Fresh pasta, great sauce, meaty - perfectly balanced. Pricy but worth it every single time! Felt perfectly safe, even in the small space, comfortable room between tables for an awesome experience. Thank you!!

They do have a bar setup, but didn't appear it's used for alcohol. I was greeted as soon as I opened the door and was walking through. Being my first time, I did order a few didn't dishes, sides and desserts to try. There was NOT a bad dish. All the food was amazing. Great portions, tasty flavors and everything truly was cooked to perfection. I have given up talking about prices because let's be honest where can you go for cheap anymore. BUT I have to mention I got the Kinsley street fried chicken dinner, it comes with four prices chicken (half chicken, breast, leg, wing, and thigh) and two sides for 22.99, I felt this was actually a great price point and so worth it. Our next dish was the JP fish sandwhich and fries, again, the sandwhich was huge, the fish was seasoned and cooked to perfection! Fries were yummy. Next up was the TPs hot honey chicken sandwhich. Now I am over the hot honey chicken sandwhich as it's been done to death, but I still always feel the need to try eveyones hahaha, and glad I did another grand slam sandwhich! For the sides, I tried the Mac and cheese, pinto beans, collard greens and coleslaw. If you follow my reviews I am a Mac and cheese snob, don't think I order many that I liked, well thank you Heavens because the Mac and cheese was DELICIOUS!!! The Coleslaw was also top notch. I don't eat collard greens or pinto beans but my family told me they were good. They did not have desserts on the menu but I seen some on the counter, sooooo I order a slice of caramel cake, slice of sour cream cake and peach cobbler. Fat kid heaven they all were so good. Literally the best caramel cake since my mother in law! I felt like I just ate at my husband's family reunion. I had to go in and order, then I left ran to dash and came back in about 25 mins and my food was ready when I got back. So service was pretty fast. My only thing wish you could order on line first, parking is not the best in that area. Also Google has address as 1641 Hertel but it actually is 1633, not a big deal because same area but just a heads up.

This tends to be a challenge on Saturdays but Heaven's Countertop, one of Buffalo's newest soul food restaurant was up for challenge. Now when I say new, I mean new as only been open for just a month today. They took over the space occupied by the soul food restaurant Je ne se qui after the owners retired. They offer both breakfast 4 days as week followed by dinner after they take a short break. But on Sundays they offer a brunch buffet for $ 30 from 1-3 followed by dinner from 3-6. As stated previously I came in on Saturday for breakfast. We got their a lil before 12 which is right before they take a break for dinner but they still accommodated us. We had 6 adults and 2 toddlers. Our waitress was the owners mom who was nice but little bit forgetful. Since we came closer to the end of breakfast they were out of some items. I got the smash up $24 for pancakes, haddock tid bits, fried chicken, eggs, grits and potatoes. Even though there was no grits or potatoes this was still a hefty meal. Everything seasoned perfectly!! They did mix up a few meals. The owner came out introduced herself and apologized for the inconvenience as well as took 10% off our meal. Which was a nice gesture. I'll definitely be back for Sunday brunch and I have to try their dinner as well because I heard their smothered pork chops are amazing. Also, their bathroom is spacious enough to change a diaper comfortably and is wheelchair accessible. It also is stocked with feminine products !! One draw back is no alcohol...so no brunch mimosas So if you are looking to try a new soul food restaurant please check them out!! Keep in mind they are new and still working kinks out.

The complementary bread was delicious, and weirdly so was the butter. I liked that it had salt on it. Oysters 10/10 From Maine, and they were huge! Burrata Salad 10/10 The burrata was so fresh and good! The earthy arugula paired nicely with it. And the balsamic was the perfect extra touch- unless it was the mustard dressing but i don't think it was. And I did like the hazelnuts, even though I didn't think I was going to. They were toasted a little bit. Continental 10/10 Veal was super thin and breaded. The breading was slightly soggy because of all the sauce on it but it was not bad though. The shrimps were a decent size and cooked perfectly. The pasta was great and you could tell it was homemade. The sauce was a really good scampi sauce. Slightly thicker than a traditional scampi, and I loved the amount of garlic and the garlic flavor of it. The broccolini was ok. The stems were a little bit hard, but the tops were good, and good in the sauce too. Seared Duck Breast 10/10 Duck was cooked perfectly. It had crispy skin on one side, and was a good temperature between medium and med rare. The flavor was also very good, and it was seasoned perfectly too. Celeriac purée was very earthy. The black currant red wine reduction was good, it had this very distinct flavor I can't place exactly. The spiced carrots were amazing. Banoffee Pie 10/10 This was a layered pie, and it was a huge slice! Plenty to share between two. It was chocolate shavings on top of a thick layer of whipped cream, a thick layer of banana cream pie, and a thick layer of homemade toffee, then the graham cracker crust. The banana cream pie had fresh bananas, and the toffee was thick and so flavorful. Everything paired together amazing and it was to die for. There was some extra toffee, chocolate, and I think a little honey on the plate for garnish as well as some dollops of custard, which was also really good. I could eat this whole thing every day.
